Actually most H.K. people understand Mandarin and they can speak it quite well with or even without accent. But people who H.K. people who were born and raised there are proud of being Cantonese speakers (comparing themselves to those people who move to H.K. from Mainland China) They would prefer you speak to them in English other than Mandarin if you don't know any Cantonese ;)
Cantonese and English are both very welcomed 🤘. As a local, I am very proud of my Cantonese. Mandarin is not our mother tougue and are mainly spoken by new immigrants.
I am from HK. Local school did not teach Mandarin before 1997, they can understand Mandarin but cannot speak well, people who born after 2000s have mandarin class since their primary school, normally they can listen and speak Mandarin well.

For American travelers, the advance airport baggage checkin in Central does not work for flights to the US. Alas, the luggage must be carried/dragged to the airport. This restriction is not a big deal unless you to check out from the hotel but have a night flight.
Taking the airport express (train) from airport to downtown actually isn't a good idea. It's pricey, boring, and probably won't take you directly to where you want to go. (Chances are, your hotel won't be located close to Tsing Yi, Kowloon or HK stations, which are not popular tourist districts) In fact, HK boasts a really good airbus service and network. By taking a bus, you save up to 60% (compare a $100 train ticket with a $40 bus fare from airport to Central) and it can probably take you directly to the doorstep of your hotel! Plus, you'll get to see the amazing views of the city and the magnificent Tsing Ma Bridge along the way (do remember to ride it on the upper deck), which is priceless!
Hong Kong translate into "Fragrant Port". When I vacationed there, the tour guide said it got its name because it was famous for selling fragrancies/perfumes at one point in time. (I have not verified that info independently.)

Then most of Asia is a no go zone.. I'm not a fan of humidity either
My tip is not to take MTR to city from airport, take a bus or taxi. MTR wastes lots of time. Trust me , I live in HK.
