All quick clarification. Yes, I am aware that they used a puppet in Alien 3. I believe that was only for the theatrical cut and there are some additional CGI scenes in the assembly. I’m not 100% on this, but it definitely looks like bad CGI in a few of the shots. Again, I could be wrong. Thank you all for watching. You are totally awesome.

The only CG shot I recall in the theatrical cut was the cracking of the alien's dome when it was being doused after leaping from the molten lead. I liked that effect, though.

    • @Paul_1971
      @Paul_1971 29 дней назад

@@georgeheilman885 I thought that too, but this is what I found out a little earlier - here's a good vid I found about where the CGI was used sparingly: ruclips.net/video/1kmjUPEd1wg/видео.htmlsi=yxOOngYBQ5cvZc0h
      Also found this on Google:
The 1992 film Alien 3 uses computer-generated imagery (CGI) in a few shots, including:
Alien head: The alien's head cracks after sprinklers cause thermal shock, which is a fully computer-generated image. The head was modeled because it's roughly the shape of an oblong football, and the shot is from above to show the crack.
Shadows: The shadows cast by the rod puppet alien are mostly CGI, with some help from rotoscoping.
Debris: Airborne debris in outdoor scenes is also CGI.
Lead: The globs of lead falling off the rod puppet are rendered in CGI.

Great Ranking Lee, my new updated ranking is (from best to worst)
    1. Aliens
    2. Alien
    3. Alien 3
(For me this is a perfect trilogy. I agree with the CGI being awful in 3 and it my only criticism of the movie. To me they just dont look finished. So not even bad. Just like they ran out of time. Would be better taking all those full shot scenes out)
    4. Romulus
    5. Prometheus
    6. AVP 2! I still don’t get the whole being too dark thing haha. I’ve never had any issues seeing most of the film. There is one or 2 smalls scenes I can’t see. But I say I see 95% of it. I do find it underrated. It’s basically a slasher with aliens and predators
    7. Resurrection
    8. AVP
    9. Covenant.
I’m planning on a rewatch of Romulus as some of the hype lowered my enjoyment slightly. But I really liked it overall.

In the process of watching AvP and AvP2, and also saw Alien Romulus today.
Is Romulus a perfect movie? No. But it's no where near as bad as some people make it out to be.
Enjoyed it and fits in to the Alien franchise well. I also like some of the back story about WY that they explored.
Aliens Special Edition was what got me in to the franchise and it will always hold a special place for me, so it wi always be my number 1. I also really love Alien 3 and can easily rewatch both those movies.
I look forward to rewatching Romulus and the prequels.

Interesting positions. I do wonder if and how this may change over time, but it's early days.
Just came back from a second Romulus viewing tonight, this time in IMAX, where it looked visually fantastic (apart from one aspect), and I had greater appreciation for the clues and references.
I still consider it an upper-middle entry though, and would like to share my ranking as below, with the first two films being interchangeable with mood:
    1. Aliens (special edition preferred)
    2. Alien (theatrical preferred)
    3. Prometheus
    4. Covenant
    5. Romulus
    6. Alien 3 (assembly cut preferred)
    7. Resurrection (theatrical preferred)
Both AVP films are also interchangeable at the bottom of the barrel, with the theatrical versions going AVP then AVP:R, and vice versa for the unrated versions.

i personally think ridley scott need settle movie ‘aliens’ queen as cannon or not. i know he doesn’t like the idea of queen, so the whole prometheus and after are all trying to move away from queen. or maybe his next movie will finally reach to the evolution of queen, since right now he is keep making all the movies set before movie ‘aliens’. or maybe he is gonna branch out to new territory and move away from movie ‘aliens’ and make new stories that doesn’t involve movie ‘aliens’, and keep the concept of queen away. i guess ending up with two version that one version mutated or evolve to have queen and end with alien 4, and one without the queen and who knows how many. lol
anyway him not settling the matter kinda hinders the movie story imo.

People always complain about the dumb characters in Prometheus and Covenant (specifically Prometheus) but i think that's the point. Humans think they're so special when in reality the things that created us are ashamed of us. The scientists in Prometheus aren't necessarily the cream of the crop, they're just the only ones crazy enough to volunteer for the mission. They have such an inflated view of themselves and it bites them in the ass.

When you said I miss seeing Sigourney Weaver, it really hit home. That is what is missing and part of the problem with the slew of Alien films since she left. Even in Alien Romulus, it needed her to elevate the film and give it more depth and heart. Alien movies struggle to be top tier without Ripley involved.

Newt doesn't seem to have aged at all, so you sort of assume it's not long.

Totally agree with the ranking of Alien and Aliens. Those movies are just pure cinematic perfection. There is a large chasm between these two and everything after. I agree that Romulus should get the number 3 spot which unfortunately isn't saying much. Yes, it's a fun well-made movie, but it is nowhere near the level of the first two. Prometheus had so much potential at being a great film but the execution fell way flat.

One thing I noticed: some of the same reviewers that don't like Romulus dislike it for not "doing anything new", so to speak, but are the same reviewers who trashed Covenant and Prometheus, because they missed the "grittiness" or something about the originals. WIth franchises, that is always a problem. They complain about something not being similar enough to the originals, while they complaining that other entries are not trying to do something new.

Ok coming from an Alien Diehard (my all time favorite franchise bar none) it's really difficult to rank them.
Like you've said about Halloween Lee my top 2 favorites and bottom 2 never change but everything else constantly moves. Iove all but the AVP's. And right now I don't think i can accurately place Romulus until after a few views but I'll try.
    THIS IS NOT 100% DEFINITIVE
1:Aliens. This is my all time favorite movie. This movie got me obsessed with the franchise when I was a little kid, probably 3 or 4 years old so about 30 years ago. Still my favorite today. Top notch perfection across the board
2:Alien. My second favorite and still in my top 3 all time favorite movies, sci fi, horror or otherwise.
3: Alien 3 The Assembly cut. Takes a muddled mess that was the theatrical release and makes it a near perfect violent horror masterpiece. My only gripe to this day remains on how the eggs wound up on the Sulaco.
4: Prometheus. This blew my mind in a way few other movies did In the past decade. I've watched it at least a dozen times
5: Alien Resurrection. I'm aware how people feel about this entry...and I don't F'ing care lmao. I was 7 years old when it came out and it was my first Alien movie I got to see in theaters. My dad took my brother and I. I have a lot of nostalgia attached to it. And it's just fun. The cast is great. A lot of the characters are great and it's ridiculously gory. I even like the Newborn. It's kinda weird but it won't hesitate to kill you 😂.
6/7:Alien Covenant and Alien Romulus tie.
I really need to sit on Romulus a bit. There's a lot of things I really liked about it, Rain, Andy, all the practical effects, the setting, the score, the cinematography, the offspring. And there were a lot of things I didn't like about it. The rest of the characters, the callback dialog, the cgi Ian Holm, an all too familiar ending that's already been done twice, a lack of proper build up for the final encounter kinda echoing a similar issue with Covenant. I still really enjoyed it. Loved little nods to games like Alien Isolation and comics like Aliens Defiance. Most people will miss these. Hearing XX121 Xenomorph for the first time In a movie was also great.
Now Covenant. I was really disappointed in my first theatrical viewing. After multiple views I've grown to love it. At one point it was in my top 3, every movie has been at some point. Resurrection was my third for a long time and so was Prometheus. As of now Covenant hovers around the back end. The reasons are the weaker cast of characters. So many of them but I only really care for Walter, David, Daniels, and Tennessee. The rest are disposable. I love the neomorphs and their grotesque births. The big issue are the xenomorph themselves. They feel forced In. Especially the second one on the ship. Ridley at the time was really disinterested in the Alien, he said "The beast is cooked" and it kinda shows. The xenomorph really needed maybe another half to breath. For a movie that was really patient for two thirds of it becomes pretty eager to end when the title creature shows up. That being said I still love it. Have the steelbook for a reason.
Also David didn't create them. He only imitated. Don't take Ridleys word for it lol. The evidence that David didn't create them is so stacked against the idea he did.
8:AVP Requiem. This is a guilty pleasure of mine. Almost a so bad it's good. It's objectively a bad movie. But it's also a dumb fun slasher lol. I wish Jason X was this amusing. Good gore thanks to being a hard R rated movie and more AVP action than the first one. It also oddly takes a lot from Resident Evil Apocalypse which is weird. The ending nuke scene is identical
9:AVP. Look it's just bad. I was 14 when I saw it opening weekend. It was my summer event movie while everyone was hyped for Spiderman 2 (they were the smart ones)
I even read the damn novelization before I saw. I loved it when I saw it in theaters, come on I was 14 cut me some slack lol. Every viewing since I've really disliked it. Half of it is boring and when you finally get to the action it just sucks. I've watched it maybe 5 times in 20 years. I've watched Covenant more than that in just 7 years. It could be rated R and it still would suck.
So that was longer than intended lol. I'll definitely change my mind at some point but right now this is just how I feel. If you read this whole damn thing then I'm sorry and thank you lmao

I agree with you on Alien 3 easily being the best after the first 2 movies. People say they want something different; Alien 3 had balls and didn't do the typical happy Hollywood ending. I would change somethings. I would kill Newt off about 40 minutes in the movie to take all hope and innocence away. I would keep Hicks alive. It would've been different if the male character lived, and the female characters died. My ending would be Ripley defeated the evil by dying and Hicks is left alone as a broken man.

    • @kyleeanderson161
      @kyleeanderson161 28 дней назад +1

@Mickey-1994 That's not entirely different from Vincent Ward's draft. His version had Ripley walking into a burning wheat field as a character named Johns watched, the character that would become Clemens.
And the game Aliens Colonial Marines had a scenario where Hicks watched as Ripley falls...but let's not talk about that 😅

My franchise ranking (least to best):
    9) Alien3
    8) Alien vs Predator: Requiem
    7) Alien: Covenant
    6) Alien vs Predator
    5) Alien: Romulus
    4) Alien: Resurrection
    3) Prometheus
    2) Alien
    1) Aliens
While I can admit that Alien3 is a decent stand-alone movie, I will never forgive how it ruined the natural progression of the 1st 2 movies (and killing off main characters off screen in the opening credits). It is still the most disappointing sequel I've ever seen (with a very depressing theater experience for me)!
They doubled-down with smart people making incredibly stupid decisions in Covenant and I absolutely hated what they did with David! Not to mention committing the cardinal sin AGAIN of killing the main character from the previous movie off-screen and not really paying off the ending of Prometheus.
Romulus is right smack-dab in the middle for me. While I enjoyed the movie overall, I also felt underwhelmed by it and the call-backs were hit & miss. It might get better on rewatch...
I just have dumb fun with AvP and Resurrection (especially Resurrection).
While I love Alien for its introduction to the necronom xenomorph among other things, Aliens is just one of my all-time favorite movies and one the best theater experiences I've ever had!

Pretty solid ranking except I’d switch Covenant and Resurrection controversially. And I’ll back you up on the hot take, as much as I love the Queen, the OG worker is much more frightening and iconic to me.
