- In this video I go through the process of replacing a rusted out power steering return line on a Toyota Camry. I originally had order a replacement through Napa but when I received it, it was the wrong one! So we made our own. -Enjoy!

Summery: brake line, bender, little tweak and twist. Love how you even take the time to make sure parts aren't rubbing against the frame. It does make a difference and a big reason I watch your vids is your attention to detail.
He kind of motivates me to do a better job on stuff that I'm working on around the house. Even if no one's ever going to see it or care. He is so meticulous about his work. I wish you was in my area I definitely would be taking my car to him. It's hard to find a mechanic as confident as Eric is and as honest.
I saw someone on one of your last videos make a comment about your SMA trademarked "If I can do it you can do it" line. Well, I just wanted to say that I remember hearing it for the first time in your brake hardware video (that was the first video of yours I ever watched) and it pushed me to finally do work for others. Now I make a decent bit of cash on the side to help pay my kids' college (and improve my tool arsenal) and haven't had any complaints about my work as I try to do it "just as Eric O. would do it." I get help from Ivan, Danner, Keith and other pros too, of course. Between all you guys you have done a lot for me and my knowledge level. It was noticed no matter how busy you are, when Vinny makes his rounds and stops by to say hi to you you always talk to him you never brush him off and say hey I got stuff to do man. At least not in the videos. That's incredibly kind of you. Vinny comes across as kind of a good old boy I did a service for his country as just a little lonely. I was doing copper, brass and steel pipe flaring back in the 70's. Mostly for high vacuum pump backing and cooling lines. There is something satisfying about doing it by hand with a tool like that!
Your videos are great. I moved out of the capitol district almost 20 years ago and I absolutely don't miss living in the rust belt. I used to dread doing the simplest maintenance on my old rusty POS used cars. It's great that you can show people there's hope for theirs.
I was cutting out a bad piece of line and replacing it with a rubber tube on my 07 Pontiac G6. Had to remove some of those clamps to give myself more maneuverability. Mine was so rusted and hard to reach I couldn't figure it out. This was the only video I could fins that included the removal and installation of that clamp. So THANK YOU! 11:25

It's your attention to detail (and your pointing out little but important details like "make sure critical fluid lines aren't rubbing on anything") that helped me to think of and produce custom anti-rub insulation which I installed on the lines passing between the condenser / radiator and the A/T on my Honda Pilot when I put in the aftermarket A/T fluid cooler. Thanks, dude!
Your instructional video on the Camry's PS return line did the job. I replaced the one on my son's '05 Lexus es330 without a problem. Thanks.
This video repair was extremely helpful to me (2002 Camry). Mine corroded and leaked at the bottom of that tubing "U" where it heads back up the reservoir. Seeing the exact path and how you get access to it is great stuff. Thanks.

in case anyone is wondering the part for this on my 2009 camry is "REIN PSH0423" got it from rockauto for $45. my power steering return line rusted through in that same spot that curves up toward front of vehicle. Bought to do the job this weekend. Nice video though - wow that flare kit is expensive though! ha

Thanks Eric O. Excellent job. I use electrical tape and tape the two together atnpoints in bends as a tracers. It helps when they go up in the bend. Pain but does works.

That flare tool will give you perfect flare of various kinds every time. Just watch for second hand websites for those. I got mine for $165 right before I had to replace all the rotted out brake lines on a 97' Geo Prizm last Winter. What a life saver. I have the cheaper kinds that are hard to use and I had to keep cutting off the bad flare.
Lol i do these lines all time. But i work at toyota dealer so i have the advantage of having them in stock. Yours came out pretty legit. Good job!
Really informative channel, even though I am in the UK and virtually everything you work on is not sold here. The methods of working are still useful and your style is fun.
I just fabricated a set of cupro-nickel trans cooler lines for a 05 Rendezvous today because one was stupid money and the other one wasn't available. I too have the Mastercool flare set with the extra GM trans line fitting bits. That set is worth every dime.
For hose bumps I'll put the normal flare bits on and give it 3 1/2 pumps from contact.

amazing that i just had my power steering SUPPLY LINE hose blow on me last week. Sadly, it's the kinda hose that is part metal, then goes into a rubberized compression fitting. My cars are so old that it's hard to find replacement ANYTHING for them but luckily my mechanic(which is an authorized Napa Car Care Center) was able to source the part. I was scared that they didn't make it anymore and i'm not sure if he's competent enough to be able to make that hose himself. Luckily i always have Eric O to help me if i can't get the service i need locally! Awesome video.
If you can't find the hose you need from a local parts store. Take it to a place that makes hoses. Most likely they will be able to recreate the hose you're looking for.
Thank you. I have noticed that Advanced Auto is now putting posters in their windows at their locations talking about how they can make custom hoses. I'm not sure if we have any specialty hose making shops around me but i appreciate you responding to help me out.

Removed a radiator from my 82 f 150. Well one of the trans cooling line twisted off. Took radiator to garage to have a leak fixed. Told guy what happened. He said flare the good remaining ends of lines use two hose clamps on both ends just use rubber fuel line in between. Worked great.
If he really used fuel line I will tell you right now it will blow. Have him replace it with tranny cooler hose.
a good tip i use my vise to hold one end of my pipe bender and bend pipes that way.

Once again, a great video, Eric. I've found that a short piece of vacuum hose works well to hold the old broken line together for pattern purposes.

Eric would probably love working on Texas cars. He should move down here and open up a shop. Most of the "mechanics" where I live can't diagnose even simple car problems.

A B.F.H.

And yes, oil the pee out of your vehicle's undercarriage every fall!
I put a barb when I make lines too. I use the double flare. I make contact and go 4 pumps with the tool and it makes a next to perfect hose end. I have the fsmi kit. It used barb less dies so everything is smooth. I get to make up lines for the civics at least once a week. I like using the nicopp as well. Your line came out great. Client will never know....

Takes me back to my days of replacing rusted out fuel and brake lines on 180" stretched Town Car limos. I still have nightmares about it.
That air compressor is loud! Haha! If yours ever "gives up the ghost", you may want to consider a Kaeser screw compressor. They are quiet and almost maintenance free.
Another tip: If you only have the basic manual double flare tool, you can just do the first part of the flaring process on the end of the line (without the 2nd part that folds the line back) and it will make a decent bubble type end that will hold the hose on as well. Nice job sir
Can this be done with a 1993 Honda accord power steering line that bolts into a gear box. It seems what he is doing here is just putting a flare on the end. Those lines don't bolt in, they connect through hoses. Mine is got to bolt into the gearbox and go back into the speed sensor. There is no part replacement. Can this be done?

Found this very useful. I will be doing similar thing here shortly on my yukon xl. I put some new fog light bulbs in the other day & i saw fluid on the skid plate. Turns out the steering gear box or one of the lines are seeping. So i may just be doing this over thanksgiving weekend to fix my baby.👍👍👍👍🇺🇸 thanks bro.

This reminds me of a job I did on a crusty 08 Trailblazer here in Michigan. No lift, all on my back. PS rack connection was the biggest PIA. Talk about PS line twister.

just had to replace rusted to shit high pressure & return ps lines on my 05 Pacifica in 92 degree Boston area heat, used duralast from autozone. cheap copycat parts. wicked fun. had to modify slightly to fit, lol. yours is as good as theirs anyway, and cheaper too probably even with materials & labor. another great job & video Eric.
My dad gave me his high dollar metal pipe benders for my HVAC/refrigeration work. They work so much better than the cheap, plastic pipe benders.
I have the master cool one, you do sometimes need 3 hands to make lines on the car. It would be great if they made the dies that go around the line magnetic, that would make life much easier.

My non-favorite is the high pressure hose on a Acura TL. It runs above the rear engine subframe, with three unreachable 10mm bolts. I tried ratchets, wrenches with swinging ratchet ends, a custom heated and bent 1/4 inch extension rod, all no go. Finally had to just break the old one out of there and zip-tie the new one on. Not fun times. Also, melting ice and snow falling on my head. Now I know lowering the back subframe is not a big deal at all, I should have done that!
Hey Eric O, you should keep some of those Edelmann or Gates steering rack fittings on hand. Only a few bucks a piece. They're basically a short barbed tube with the proper tube nut connection.

Wow! I wish I would have seen this before I did the lazy way to replace my power steering return line in my 95 Thunderbird. I Just used a ton of hose... I hate working on that car, maybe one day I go back over it and put the right line in.

nice bends... I have that robin air bender for like 25 years, the plier benders work well on 3/16

I thought I heard an air raid siren? Back home in Nova Scotia, we had them for the volunteer fire departments, in the era before pagers and cell phones. Even today, they still blow at noon.

I enjoyed it. I'm working on the fuel lines for the 55 Chevy truck and never considered having a flare. It is a low pressure line but hey, if I can do a professional job, I'll consider it. I don't have a flaring tool but I'll check it out, thanks.
Use your standard bubble flair kit and put a bulged end on it or use a brass ferrule out of a compression fitting and solder it on the end of the line ;)

Just a quick tip I have had to do hundreds of these, use a piece of string to messure uour pipe length, saves fighting a large roll
Bending pipe is a skill unto itself. I've done just a few bends on a pipe used for electrical runs and they get interesting. Have never done any for vehicle maint. Just takes practice, practice, practice.

I had to laugh when you said the video might not be worth recording. To the contrary, learning how you put in that detent at the end was something many of us have never seen before. Not having the tool, I wonder if I could just put a double brake line flare at the very end to accomplish the same task of preventing the rubber connecting hose from coming off. Not ideal but a work around....

Ive soldered a brass olive over power steering pipe from my plumbing kit,works well and a way of getting round not having a flaring tool.

Tweak and twist ... just like the people I used to see outside the Checker Auto Parts in Phoenix 20 years ago.😁 They'd always start washing your windshield, hoping for a few bucks in return ... to go score some tweak. 😬
I use that NiCopp line on everything. Love the stuff. The small, brake line sizes bend with just your fingertips. So easy to work with. Turns green, but never rots out! My 940 came from the factory with that stuff for brake lines. OE lines, driven in New England for 25 winters, sat 2 years parked on dirt, and they're STILL all good! 😎
I bought that same Mastercool set off eBay for real cheap (comparatively speaking - think it was $400 instead of $500) ... but it arrived with NO labels anywhere on the case, or the tool. HMMM .. straight from the mainland I suspect. 🤨 Ad said it was genuine Mastercool, too. Buyer beware ...

I've probably bent 100 miles of brake, fuel, tranny, and p/s lines over the years, but I still enjoy watching someone else do it. Everyone has their own way of doing it which is great to store away in the memory banks. I've always eyeballed them, but marking them is a MUCH better way of going about it. Gonna try that on the next one - they'll probably come out 100x better! I still think I'm 18 regarding my eyesight, lol - nowhere near that anymore! I'm lucky I can drive without glasses. Just barely! Anyway, great vid - love 'em all! 👍👍

Yeah, good point! In OH back in July I saw a pickup rolling down 76, just before the 77 interchange, with the bed sides flapping like wings, LOL!! Could see right through it to the other side. 😂

I am a recent newbie to your vids but this one reminds me of a Sunday job i did for a friend whose steering let go and he needed the car for a work trip next day so i cobbled up a pipe from copper heating pipe and plumbing fittings to get him out of trouble. Told him to replace with the proper stuff asap but he drove it for 6 months and then sold the car on. When i told him he should have replaced it as it would fracture he said.. if it ain't broke don't fix it. Sometimes your friends are not who you think they are. I am surprised at how rusty the undersides are on a lot of your vids. My local council use salt on the roads here in England but your roads must be toxic by winters end. Do motorcyclists suffer from blood poisoning if they go for a long slide along the road if they come off?
