  • This film covers the history of Merchant Navy class 35005 Canadian Pacific, flagship of the Watercress Line's steam locomotive fleet.
CanPac is currently undergoing a full overhaul at Eastleigh and Ropley. Although we are being awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, we still need to raise a further (approx.) £200,000. Please go to www.watercressline.co.uk/canpac/donate to support our project to return CanPac to working order.
Many thanks to Nic Greene ( / @geralldus ) for producing this video.

Thanks for this. I think the re-built Merchant Navies are the most beautiful locos Britain has built.

In the early 1960's as a snotty nose 14 year old spotter I was often at Brookwood station watching the Merchant Navies hauling express services at over 100 MPH. No speed limit at Brookwood then.

The Atlantic Coast Express goes from Waterloo to Exeter and Bideford and 35005 did not reach 105.88mph it was her sister no 35003 Royal Mail where as Clan Line reached 104mph if you want to know more about Canadian Pacific talk to her old driver who is at the Bluebell Railway Clive Groome he knows her very well

35005 did reach 105mph on May 14th 1965 at Winchester Junction - I was the fireman! And Gordon Hooper was the driver also on the footplate was the late Brian Smith a technical inspector from Brighton Works and in the train recording were Don and Bryan Been and Terry Jackson, amongst a select band.

The 'Atlantic Coast Express' to Southampton Docks???????????? Are you sure?

As others have said the Atlantic Coast Express was for Exeter for portions forward, note the disc code on the smoke box, center top & bottom are Waterloo - Salisbury - Exeter, those trains bound to & from Southampton - Bournemouth - Weymouth had disc code of middle right and bottom left-hand lamp irons as seen head on. Please correct this error.
