Great job! i use a dremel for my flags and i found that using the 105 bit to outline the stars first makes them crisp. i will definitely try a chisel on my next one. It looks great!!!
Very nice job. I felt obligated to let you know after seeing the size of the cobwebs on your bandsaw that you most likely have a spider in your shop the size of a small dog.
7:00 dang that's a lot of taping. Could have clamped the stripes together instead of gluing them to smooth out the wavy portion. Then unclamp them to painted/burned each stripe separately. Clued or screwed the stripes together and then paint the stars on it.
I did this project around a year or so ago but if I were to take a guess most likely somewhere around 10-15 hrs of work including carving the stars on an uneven surface was a challenge.
The reason for the belt sander was to get as close to the marked lines as possible because the grinder is only used to hit the high uneven spots of the project.
Hey Great job!! Looks Awesome ! The template is confusing to me. Having numbers on the right and the left. Can you explain in detail how you lay the template down on each board to get the correct outline? Thanks !
Of course! You actually do not need to mark both sides of the template, only one is needed. Once you have your template cutt out and ready just measure over 3/4” and mark it 1-13. So you should have a total of 13 lines each one spaced out 3/4”. The first stripe should be marked at the edge of the template, second at the first line, third piece at the second line and so on. So once you have all the pieces traced out they are slightly staggered to give you the wavy look to the flag and you will need to grind down the remainder of the wood to make it flow nicely.
One last question... instead of making 2 exact same templates couldn’t you of just traced and then slid the template over to where the line ended and continued tracing?
Mark Dusterhus yes you could easily do that as well, I suppose at the time I was building this I just wanted to have a continuous template to go off of considering I made mine larger than the original maker. Glad I could help!
ruclips.net/video/L10h_c4LKvI/видео.html this is where he got the idea from, he explains every step and has a template that you can download from instuctables
If there is any way I can buy one from you for my home please let me know. Every since I joined the the army, I have been extremely picky on the flag I want to displayed in my home. Ur flag would look incredible hanging in my home. Its unique. Please let me know. Thanks
one tip i would say is because your going for that subdued look. burn the whole flag and then charcol the strip[s you want black it will look alot better.
@@bensworkshop4195 I wonder if masking then spraying a fire retardant spray for white stripes would achieve same goal? See "No-Burn Original Fire Retardant 32fl" - $18.51 on Amazon.
Nice, but if your gonna use the other guys idea why not also use the turbo planer to knock down the waves, and be done in twenty minutes. Also why go out side the lines on the band saw? you should be able to use the other half to make another flag.
baddawg3 I try to use equipment that most people already have in their arsenal and don’t have to go out and buy a $150 piece of equipment they will only use once. In this case most people will only build this flag once so a $10 disc sander will suffice over the turbo planer. But you are right, the turbo is much faster!
@@dakotamax2 ruclips.net/video/L10h_c4LKvI/видео.html this is where he got the idea. I've made about 20 of these flags and believe me turbo plane is the best. www.arbortechtools.com/us/turbo-plane/
I saw one recently, entire flag surface is burned first then sanded lightly, thin coat of red paint added for stripes, star field is edge-masked then laid out with adhesive backed stars, blue background is over-sprayed then adhesive stars are removed. Not the same level of craftsmanship shown here but less labor.
I always like to hear the new and different ways people build flags like these, Thank you! But yes, the way I did it in this video includes a bit more time such as carving the stars but the reason I do it is because people like you and I appreciate the time put in. Thanks again Dakota!
Schon Mack it took me about 45 minutes or so to cutt all the stripes on the band saw. The first one is the learning curve and after that it’s smooth sailing.
I have to build a project for my nieces class auction in Feb 2020 and I love this! I have never built anything before so I’m a little nervous. Would you be available for questions?
Benjamin Lawlor I’m getting ready to start building, but I have a question about the union area. My nieces school wants to know if I can put their emblem instead of the union? Is that possible? I have a pen that burns writings etc into wood. Any suggestions on how to get the emblem template on the wood so I don’t make it look like a 2 year olds drawing?? Thank you 😊
Steve Miller I had to lengthen the stencil due to the length I made the flag. The wave of the stencil I printed I used as is and transferred it to plywood first.
Benjamin Lawlor did you just duplicate the first template ? And use both templates when you traced out your stripes....I believe the original plans call for 31.5 length stripes and you did yours at 37
Mark Dusterhus yes I did duplicate the first stencil and just match it up to the butt of the first stencil. If the stencil doesn’t fit perfectly in the flow of the first stencil, overlap them to the point of which they match up and cutt the second stencil to match up to the end of the first stencil. I’m sure there may be other ways to do so but that is how I did mine. Thanks!
A planer isn’t needed and neither is a jointer. A jointer will just make the joints flat after cutting them on the table saw but with glue and tight clamping you will have no issues. Jointer is just a plus if you have it.
If I were to paint the flag first and then glue the pieces up, I would be grinding all of the paint off the flag when I go to smooth out all the overlapped edges the flag has.
Well if you read the description I clearly stated that I got this project from Fishers Shop but I do apologize for not remembering his name off hand when making this video and doing a continuous voice over.
So basically, you just watched a video from the Fisher’s Shop channel and then copied Drew Fisher’s entire process without giving him any of the credit?
If you watched the entire video you would hear me give credit to Fishers shop and care to just look in the description where I link his video actually.

Awesome piece but you had me at "If it doesn't, you messed up." 🤣
Absolutely magnificent!
There I was ready to make my own burnt, FLAT flag. This is just too cool. Nice job.
Dude that looks amazing. Great job. You're very lucky to have a dad like that that has all those tools!
Yes he is 👍🏻
Very nice job. I felt obligated to let you know after seeing the size of the cobwebs on your bandsaw that you most likely have a spider in your shop the size of a small dog.
This project was done in a large barn shop so there is most likely a couple very large spiders waiting in the shadows lol
You are amazing! Great job and tutorial!

Just need all of that equipment and you are good to go 👌
I’m also talking about a router, joiner etc.. get a clue you dipshit
Amazing - Thank You
Looks awesome man. Great job
Great work ! Awesome results.
Looks good. Definitely a lot of work but well worth it. 👍

From start to finish, how many hours did this take you? TIA

Ok so where is the template
Beautiful work man. Well done.
What's the point of the belt sander when you just turn around and use the grinder on it 5:14?
The reason for the belt sander was to get as close to the marked lines as possible because the grinder is only used to hit the high uneven spots of the project.
Excellent work manship, it must have taken you quite a while to chisel out 50 stars . You have patience.
Beautiful!

How do I send a picture of my finished product to you?
Appreciate it. I just gotta say- you need to protect your face holes man. I know it’s annoying, but it will catch up to you and it can’t be undone.
I have just recently invested in some respirators, I appreciate the concern and the comment. Thank you!

You have actual dimensions for that stencil so I can make one ? It won’t print out
Great job, how do you print out the stencil? Do you have to enlarge it any or just print it as is

Looks awesome! How long does it take to do each flag start to finish?
This flag took approximately 5-6 hours to make but it’s atleast a 2 day project to let the glue and paint dry between working.
What can you use if you don’t have a planer and jointer?
A planer isn’t needed and neither is a jointer. A jointer will just make the joints flat after cutting them on the table saw but with glue and tight clamping you will have no issues. Jointer is just a plus if you have it.
Save yourself the hassle. Burn the whole flag and just lightly sand away the "white stripes" then just painters tape it to pain it.
How would you sand just the white stripes?
Jacob Stanton foam block sand paper. Sometimes I don’t even lightly sand it. I’ll just stain the stripes black After it’s all burnt.
need to raise your bench up save your back from a old fart! great job
What was the final dimensions of this flag? Need to make a large one to go over a sofa.
13 X 1.5 = 19.5 tall (minus planing the roundness off the 2 X 4)
37 inch wide.
What do you use to hang the flag
d rings
Crazy but serious questions 🙃 can you make me one? I'm in love❣️
Why not paint before assembling?
If I were to paint the flag first and then glue the pieces up, I would be grinding all of the paint off the flag when I go to smooth out all the overlapped edges the flag has.
make a wooden tank
