Up to this point we always thought the Predators were solitary hunters but this scene introduced us to a whole TRIBE of them! Predator 2 really did add to the lore of the predator. Earlier in the movie the predator wont kill the boy in the cemetery because his gun was a toy. A non-combatant. In this scene, the elder predator rewards Harrigan with a trophy. He won the hunt of sorts. While the Predator keeps skulls as trophies he gives him an old musket as his reward. Also, nice touch that elder predator turns around, at first, to walk away but decides to give him said musket trophy. Good writing.

For the people who came here after prey, the comics explain where the pistol came from. “Landing on a small island, Raphael was forced to deal with his mutinous crew after a dispute regarding stolen treasure. Whilst defending himself from his men, the Elder Predator, Greyback emerged and joined the slaughter. Initially attacking Raphael, the latter briefly joined forces with the creature to dispatch the attackers back-to-back.
With the crew dead, Adolini prepared to face off against Greyback, before a straggler shot him in the back. Mortally wounded, he gifted the Yautja with his personal flintlock pistol before dying. Greyback proceeded to bury Adoloni out of respect before leaving Earth.”

A dying pirate was the one who gave him the gun. The predator and the pirate were going to fight but the pirate was shot in the back by a coward and mortally wounded. Predators take opportunities to fight individuals they deem worthy in fair and honorable combat very seriously. As you can imagine this pissed the predator off immensely because it had been denied fair and honorable combat, so the coward was very quickly killed. The pirate and predator had developed respect for one another, so before he died the pirate presented his personal pistol to the predator and said only one line that the predator repeats here - "Take it."

Like in the Samurai culture, it is considered the ultimate defeat of an opponent (and slap in the face) to be defeated not only by a lesser opponent, but by your OWN weapon. If you could not hold on to your weapon, you were not worthy of living. Same for the Predator, Harrigan beat the city hunter with his OWN weapon. That to the elder was worthy of respect and a token of that respect was his prized flintlock pistol. He didn't live 300 years or more and through endless hunts to be a cheat and certainly not obviously his clan's leader as the other Predators moved towards him in a respectful manner with a slight nod of permission to leave his presence.

@@deathstrike did you ever hear the story of how he got that flintlock pistol? He was on a hunt on Earth, and came across the man who he was there to hunt in the first place: a pirate captain, a fierce warrior who nobody in their right mind crossed. The two were getting ready to enter hand to hand combat, when they were ambushed on all sides by a large mercenary party, there to claim the bounty on the pirate captain. It became clear very quickly the two had to work together to defeat this threat, or both of them would die. So the Predator chief and pirate captain fought side-by-side to defeat the mercenaries. When it was all said and done, the two prepared once again to enter one on one combat. Before this could happen, one of The mercenaries raised up from the ground and shot the pirate through the back. The predator quickly killed this mercenary, but the wound was fatal to the pirate. The dying pirate looked at the Predator, took his prized pistol & tossed it to the Predator. "Take it" he says in a raspy voice, then dies.

Key point for the Predator timelines. This was the first time that a Yautja had been defeated by a human in direct hand-to-hand combat. Also, the first time one had been tracked back to his ship by a human hunter. This is directly after a Yautja had been forced to suicide after being bested in a fight (Predator 1). While humans had been known as challenging prey in the past due to our cunning, we had unfortunately been degrading in quality as prey. Those two hunts propelled humanity back to the top of the soft meat prey category.

I think Greyback gave Harrigan the pistol bc he reminded him of Raphael Adolini. If you notice he was going to leave but takes a moment to turn around and stare Harrigan in the face, just before he reaches for Raphael’s pistol and hands it to him. He probably saw a resemblance and held respect for a past warrior to a current warrior who managed to defeat his own kind. If Raphael were to have fought Greyback I think Raphael would’ve won, but Greyback will never know the outcome bc he was robbed of his challenge. Giving Harrigan the pistol was him letting go of the past while simultaneously showing great honor to Harrigan

I love that any of them could kill him whenever they like, but they just ignore him and let him live. It is one of the few times when ignoring someone is as sign of respect. They obviously recognize that Harrigan is a warrior and a worthy warrior according to their code. Their elder deals with him by tossing him an antique (which is obviously fairly valuable) as a sign of grudging respect.

The city hunter was watching harrigan ever since the first city battle at the beginning of the film. It watched him kill 5 humans with his shotty and probably figured..."yeah i'm going to do some recon on this human. It's good." And so the city hunter does recon on harrigan throughout the film. Such a fantastic film.

Billy in the first Predator may have been a descendant of Naru or someone in her tribe and more than likely had an idea of what was hunting them. At least it in my headcanon anyways. Maybe she gave the Yautja clan the gun to avoid any bloodshed and they gave her a gift in return.

It's 2022 august and still this scene gives me goosebumps. Predator 1, Predator 2 and Prey are the true cannon. This movie up to this point deserves ovation.
These where the golden days where story telling was way up there. The franchise needs a new crew of writers and scenes on the aliens universe. It's a great franchise with a good future if it lands on the hands of good directors and writers. We have the tech to do anything we want but stories requires THINKING.
Outstanding movie as usual. This never gets old. I hope there is a remastering and revision of this movie with current special effects.

No. The writing was terrible for Predator 2. I still like the movie, dont get me wrong. But it has awful writing, the plot doesn't make sense, the acting is atrocious, tons of cheesy one-liners, pointless gratuitous nudity (not that I mind, but it's still a common tactic used to help shield a crappy storyline), etc. The costume, makeup, & special effects tho are incredible. Still an underrated classic 90s B-rate sci-fi action flick, imo. Most sci-fi action movies in the 80s & 90s were like this. Nostalgia is a hellava drug. Everything that came from your childhood is always gonna seem better, bc a child has no responsibilities, & sees the world through rose tinted glasses, so everything period seems better when you're a child, it creates unfair biases. If this movie came out today the same ppl praising it, would hate it.

Iconic ending! While Predator (1987) has gone on to be recognized as a straight up classic and is definitely the better movie, I’d argue that Predator 2 was a good sequel that was groundbreaking in its own way. 👍
I know that Danny Glover’s character DOES show up again in a Predator short story collection, but it would’ve been great to see him on the big screen again. Mike Harrigan was awesome!
