The best Jack Nicholson scenes consist of Jack being being salty about being denied service. The Last Detail (denied beer), Five Easy Pieces (denied an omelet and toast), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (denied TV time).
I was in the Navy during this period and spent time at sea, in transit, on shore patrol, in shipyards, in sailor dives, etc. This movie captures the essence of the life at that time to a "T". Though the premise is sad, the first time I saw this movie I was rolling on the floor from the antics of the sailors portrayed and how close to home it was to me. I was aboard a ship with a 250 man crew of the most varied guys you could ever meet. I swear there were more than a few who were pretty much the real life equivalents of the sailors portrayed in this movie. They could have been given the parts and never had to "act".
@@Davethreshold Oh, it was my pleasure, I enjoyed it. But I experienced nothing like your brother probably dealt with on those things in Vietnam. Scary stuff! God bless him!
I watched this movie with my shipmates while stationed in Londonderry Naval Communication station in 1974. We had a blast!!!Still one of my favorite flicks of all time!!!
I was an extra in The Last Detail. My bit was filmed in a coffee house named Grumbles in downtown Toronto. It was in the movie just before they go to the party with Carol Kane. They shot the Toronto bits in December 1973. Good fun, never been in a movie before. Jack Nicholson is fairly short.
@@mattsmith7244 77 to 81, we had guys like that. I went to Captain's Mast in boot because of a guy just like that. We had a little scuffle with some civilians at Rosey O Grady's in Orlando. It was great. 🤣
I remember I first saw this movie in 1974. I was only 19 years old and I cut out of class from college to see it at the matinee. At the time I had never heard of Jack Nicholson before and never saw any of his movies, I'm not really sure why I went this time. At any rate I was blown away by this movie and his performance, up until then I had never experienced a movie like this or been entertained by a movie in such a transformative way, it completely changed the way I looked at movies and how they could effect you. Plus when I saw this movie right behind me was a row of 3 or 4 middle aged guys that I assumed had been in the military service and they were laughing so hard that it made the experience that much better.
USN 71-75... This is the old fucking Navy... I love it.. Before they started to breast feed these computer geeks in today's USN.. Except the Navy SEALS.... God bless our American Spartans!!
Lmao, go fuck yourself dude. Do you have any idea what kind of threat Cyber crimes and attacks bring to our nation? THAT is why the smart branches "breast feed the computer geeks".
proud to say i am a signalman even though i got out in 1990. loved the old days when you could still get away with some crazy shit. best movie of jacks career.
+William Wilson I have been looking to buy this book, finally found it on Amazon. Bought the book and the movie tonight. I have the movie on VHS (LMAO) but wouldn't you know it the VCR doesn't work anymore.
on a ship there's always some random ass vhs tape stashed somewhere, we watched this shit quite a few times, this was about 15 years ago, funny how the older military films seem to nail it better than the new ones
"I'm going to KICK YOUR ASS AROUND THE BLOCK FOR DRILL". This was the Navy I enlisted into at the time. I'm an old retired MCPO now. The Petty Officer's we worked for were just like this. Yet, they always looked after us..... especially on liberty.
saw this on vhs on my ship...damn...20 years back almost, one of the few tapes we had, was strange watching it, but it's a damn good movie, the atmosphere is extremely USN, cold, shitty, miserable but you just make it work and get a few memories out of the ordeal, also check out a film called The Final Countdown, they captured the USN like no other
This scene took place inside the Spadina Hotel bar in Toronto. Loved that bar, it looked identical to the movie until it became a backpacker's hostel in 1995. Building's now for sale if anyone wants to buy it: www.bisnow.com/commercial-real-estate/toronto/1808-new-life-for-spadina-hotel/
In opening act young private walks around looking for Buddusky and Mulhouse. Who is he? Why can't I find his name amongst the cast credits anywhere? Even if he was uncredited he still has to listed on IMDb as uncredited as long as he spoke in the movie, which he did. So where's his name somewhere? Anyone know who it was?
Ahem....They start in Norfolk "Virginia" (not W. Vir.) and are headed to Portsmouth Naval Prison in "Maine" (not Mass.,) on the grounds of the Portsmouth Naval Yards just north of Portsmouth New Hampshire; (that is a bit confusing)...geography lessons anyone? Sheesh....still it's a great movie even if viewers are not trying to get lost during the 5 days they have to deliver their unfortunate prisoner to the clink = "8 yrs in the DD"...as a curious incidental, Gilda Radner makes her minor film debut in this one, though you have to be keen to spot her....
*My opinion* Jack's 5 best scenes, in order: #1 talking to an imaginary bartender named Loyd, #2 I AM THE MUTHERF*CKER SHORE PATROL, MUTHERF*CKER!!!! #3 You want me to hold the chicken... I want you to hold it between your knees... #4 HEEERES JOHNNY!! #5 CALLING A IMAGINARY WORLD SERIES WITH SANDY KOFAX PITCHING. THEY'RE ALL SOLID JACK THRU AND THRU
@southdakotaslim I love films from the 1970's. Before all this bullshit big budget special effects nonsense took over. I love these films that were pure character studies.
The best Jack Nicholson scenes consist of Jack being being salty about being denied service. The Last Detail (denied beer), Five Easy Pieces (denied an omelet and toast), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (denied TV time).
You could stretch the concept with The Shining (denied peace and quiet) and Batman (just denied, in general).
Soooo true.
its been true for a long time: The Navy is the best thing that ever happenec to me.
He also doesn't like lawyers talking over him.
He was also denied a beer in Going South.
This movie needs to be seen by more people. One of the definitive New Hollywood films.
I feel like it's often overlooked. I think this could be his best role or at the very least top 3.
one of best films ever made
The Last Detail shows how great actors can take a little movie and make it really interesting to watch.
i agree with you from 2021

Probably my favorite Jack Nicholson movie. That’s great!

@@greasyflight6609 Some shot in TO and some in the US. The opening Naval Base scenes were filmed at CFB Borden north of Toronto.

Part of why I long for a time machine because this pussified zero tolerance society is bullshit.
One of his best roles...glad they changed the ending from the book.

Except the title doesn't make as much sense without the novel's ending.
One of the greatest and most quotable scenes of all time.
I guess you really had to have lived during that era to appreciate how realistic this scene was. Nicholson nailed it.

"Whoa there sunshine..." lmao. This is such a great film and has one of the most realistic drunk scenes in the history of film. Just brilliant.

Throw Cinderella liberty in there as well as as a great US Navy movies well from that timeframe.
Both based on worthwhile books written by ex-USN Daryl Ponicsan.
Oh god this kill sme every time!! Never gets old & thank you for posting THIS one scene,,,,although the entire film is brilliant
I've ridden in the back of a shore patrol van back in the 90's. The Navy isn't as wild as it once was. Perhaps a good thing.
Takes me back to the day!!
My favorite scene (cracks me up, every "FUCKIN' time!)...

"But I don't feel like one right now!" LMAO... I wouldn't either in that situation. Maybe afterward though ;)

i don't care what anyone says, this is Jack's greatest performance. Cuckoo's nest was sort of a little brother to this performance.
Do not forget George Hanson.
