Watched this on a local (Philippine) free TV channel back in the mid-1990s. After weeks of adjusting (even enduring) Optimus Prime-less Season 3 episodes and countless replays, this episode was finally shown! Then countless replays set in again until Part 2 was played. It wasn't easy back then. The commercials made it even an episode longer, thus challenging the attention span.
I knew this two parter existed, but didn't see it for years. I just always missed it and I could never find the tape of it. Funny enough, I saw both Dark Awakening, which brought back Prime as a zombie and had an alternate ending that teased this episode, and Rebirth, which had Prime back as leader before I ever saw this. I was well into my teens when I FINALLY got a VHS of this thing. It was worth the wait to finally see Prime's great return. Its just weird that I searched high and low for so long to get this episode and now here it is on RUclips for free for everyone to see and posted by Hasbro. Unreal, lol.
Seeing how Wreck-Gar maintained his "talk TV" personality after getting infected, it makes me wish the other Autobots who were infected get a little more screen time. Like with Blurr, hearing him talking about more or less killing anyone faster than anybody, and then able to infect several bots at once due to his fast speed, would be very interesting to see happen.
This story has enough potential to be a feature length film, the possibilities are endless. I love it but tbh two 20 minute episodes doesn’t do justice to the idea of a hate plague spreading across the universe

I remember back in very late 86 coming home from school and putting on my TV to watch the season 3 episode for that day. The Transformers series was on Monday-Friday, for season 3 and season 2. I think Season 1 started off on Sunday mornings only back in 84. Anyway to make my point, I remember putting on the TV to watch the Season 3 episode for that day. Think it was either "Dark Awakening" or "Ghost in the Machine". Not to certain, were talking 35 years ago. But what I do remember was during the second set of ads on this season 3 episode which I was watching, came a little "teaser trailer" featuring Optimus Prime, saying "Heroes Never Die. I Optimus Prime can never be conquered!". I remember screaming "Fuck Yeah" the first time I saw that teaser trailer.
The Best displays of leadership seen by Rodimus can be found in this episode. Ironic as he was passing the baton back to Optimus, it's like the thought of not being leader anymore gives him a second wind.
I thought exactly the same too so it's nice to find some like minds. The more Covid eeks out its horrid narrative the more I wonder just when will Prime turn up?
If you haven't heard Marv Wolfman before, he wrote this two-part season 3 finale, he also wrote the DC crossover comic Crisis On Infinite Earths, he later appear as guest cameo in the Arrowverse crossover TV series of the same title.
“Now sky lynx where are prowl ironhide and all the other deactivated autobots bodies? This quintesson can repair them and we can tackle this issue together” Sky lynx: “erm prime you incinerated all there bodies in a sun a little while back” Prime: “shit!!”

I think it's more that Rodimus is prone to making hotheaded decisions but because he is the leader Ultra Magnus has to listen even when he knows it's a bad idea. @@Z_The_ Carnage in C Minor. on top of having a TON of animation and scale errors, it also has some pretty darned annoying "alien" voices. In my opinion it's the worst episode of the entire series.
(19:13) 'The main memory bug' - That was the crucial difference between this episode and 'Dark Awakening'. Without that piece of curcitry, Optimus would merely be a (programmed) robotic zombie! The quintessons removed (and probably wrecked) the original one in that episode, so how they managed to create a like-for-like new one from scratch is even more remarkable (actually if you observe closely in the Rebirth, the section above his forehead is fully gray instead of partially blue, so perhaps it is not exactly the same as the original memory bug, but close enough).
For years I thoughts humans here were the real villains…. However I finally understand, the father was infected with the hate-spores from the beginning.
9:10 "Why do I keep seeing you in my dreams, Optimus... are you telling me I'm not the leader you were? (sigh) I already know that Optimus... I always have." He struggles with that for the whole season, THEN overcomes it by the end, only to have the GOAT sign a contract extension and be like "OUT OF THE WAY, HOT ROD!" Next thing you know he's back at the statue like Coy and Vance Duke talking about "where was I... oh yeah, f--- this Optimus, ya'll should've picked Twin Twist..."
They retroactively said that one was a rebuilt body I think, dark awakening was the real body and that was destroyed. Quintessons had the ability to rebuild entire transectors. All they needed to do with that body was make it fully functional and reupload his memory circuits and he’s back to life
I know it's been around 30 years since this was first aired... and a lot of people didn't get the memo... The show was a 30 minute toy commercial. If you look at the channel name... they drop clues... maybe pick it up? It's NOT Shakespeare. People didn't make this show for the sake of story continuity. Enjoy it for what it is... nostalgia.
@@BornInPhillyPA Actually that is wrong because in the original script his body was supposed to be damaged like it was in Dark Awakening and he was to be fixed up by the scientists in order to weaponise him wit the spores but it was removed due to time restrictions
So this was pretty much a zombie apocalypse episode, for robots! The Smurfs had a similar episode with "The Purple Smurf". Kind of fascinating, since both predated not only the mid 2000s zombie craze, but the entire "rapid infection" zombie trope. Most zombie movies up until that point where about the aftermath, with no rapid infection playing a part. The only movie to really feature that by this point was Return of the Living Dead in 1985, one year before season 3 aired.
15:09 ha! i love the bits they do god i love when back in the day you could get away with almost anything just like with the He's dead Jim Star Trek reference. and its frightening that even when Optimus is nonfunctioning that arm still knocked Sky Lynix a couple feet backwards. shows how powerful he is.
This season states Optimus was built by the Quintessons but it’s also implied that it was Alpha Trion who created him. So the Quintessons programmed Alpha Trion to do it? Ultimately in G1 they were all reliant on a Quintesson made supercomputer to achieve consciousness before some continuities invented Cold Construction.
It wasn't until season three that the Transformers became aware of who built them. The Quintessons built Orion Pax, who Alpha Trion rebuilt into Optimus Prime in season 2's "War Dawn."
i look at it this way in a way they did create prime well orion pax alpha trion i think just rebuilt orion paxes frame into optimus prime however i could be totaly wrong.
so wait, the Quintessons built the ancestors to the Autobots and Decepticons, so who made Vector Sigma ??? because Vector Sigma said "before Cybertron was, I was"
Season 3 intro music 🔥 As a child renting this from blockbuster and seeing optimus prime return after being traumatised from his death in the film was enlightening.
10:10 You don't realize as a kid, but as an adult it become blatantly obvious that this is essentially a Transformers toy commercial within an episode.
When this episode was new the original Trek reruns were still in the hot Monday-Friday "after the news but before prime time" zone, plus the Trek movies were on that "Spock's dead, now he's back" vibe...!
19:57 they have cut out part of the episode. I remember that when Optimus was on the chair they tried to reactivate him but it fail and almost blew him up. Then they fixed the issue and then it goes to the scene where the Quintession says “once again we are ready, but if this does not work then Optimus Prime will never live again.” If someone has a old VHS recording they will probably find the lost scene.
I keep seeing comments about how some people had to wait a week for the conclusion, but when it originally aired it was still a Monday-Friday run and Part 2 aired the next day. They must have edited that moment out later.
This comment got me Gogglin'!! No luck so far, but very interested. I always wondered why the Quintesson said "once again we are ready..." when it was seemingly only his first try!
Dr. Morgan and Gregory should be put in prison for the rest of their lives for all those killed across the cosmos because of the Hate Plague they released.
I always believed that the Quintesson did a "Rhinox" from Beast Wars.He basically accessed the Matrix and brought Optimus's spark back like how Rhinox retrieved Optimus Primal's.

The commercials made it even an episode longer, thus challenging the attention span.
one of the best Rodimus roll calls are in this episode.
Actually Ultra Magnus did the roll call.
@@MLK-KAEFENTERPRISES i stand corrected
I like how this episode and the following one use music from Transformers: The Movie.
it's just the score by vince de whatever carried over from the movie.. all of season 3 has the same composer as the movie

the song you are referring to was "The Touch by Stan Bush"

Man that Hate Plague brought out the worst in Ultra Magnus.

And brought out the funny in Wreck-Garr! What he said after becoming infected was comedy gold!

Nobody is their usual self while under its influence.
It’s always the humans that make things worse! So glad I’m part machine…
Some really great leadership from Rodimus in this way. The strike team assemble team was bad ass.
20:15 - 20:17 and the great leader rises once again to lead the Autobots
20:26 Optimus Prime is back and better than ever
@6:32 I love how Swindle is hanging out at the Hospital w the Protectabots, apparently very concerned about Jessica Morgan. He's a softy at heart
Isn't it obvious, they pay him. 🤣
He felt bad about what they did so he came back to apologize. Lol
He's there for the collections agency.
They bought scrap metal from him.
Who else to run the insurance plan/scam extortion scheme?
Still gets chocked up seeing prime stand up and talk
One of the best episodes of G1. “Hands down.”
At 6:31 we can see Swindle casually waiting for Jessica with the Protector Bots 🤣
Supposed to be streetwise
Knowing him, he probably was there to sell some organs
"They have all gone mad, this is no place for me" Galvatron the most sane robot ever.
Noticed too That Wreck-Gar was doing Ricky From I love Lucy?
If Blurr got infected, the episode would end near instantly.
10:10 rodimus isn't messing around when it comes to what is essentially a funeral service
Animator #1: “Hmmmmm, how do we make the human villain really obvious for the kids?”
Animator #2: “we could give him a face scar and a devious smirk”

Welcome back Optimus Prime!
Best Season finale
He gets killed three episodes later.
Nice touch how the room was bathed in light when Optimus returned to life.
Nice to see almost every combiner in this episode.
I do enjoy this episode I am glad that hasbro decide to bring Optimus back
This episode was co-written by legendary comics writer Marv Wolfman, co-creator of Blade, Nova, Cyborg, and Deathstroke, among dozens of other characters.
He was overrated
The Autobots should've celebrated Jessica. After all, she saved Optimus's life and therefore helped save ALL the Autobots!

These episodes hit differently after 2020. "The only way to stop such madness is with wisdom."
I love season 3 but nothing compares to season 1 bc of the feeling of first seeing Transformers. Childhood memories
Ultramagnus call's Rodimus a punk whoa was great Optimus came back to life. And that Star Trek reference perfect.
Ultra Magnus also called Rodimus a "puny wimp" truer words were never spoken....I always thought Rodimus was a wimp.
@@Wolffen51 Well Rodimus is a teenager even though the Matrix of leader makes him taller and stronger. But he still so young think about it you suddenly become the new leader of a whole team and you're trying to make your old mentor who was a legend proud wouldn't you be a bit nervous.
One question in what part of this episode was there a Star Trek reference.
@@nicholasmorsovillo2752 You didn't notice the he's dead Jim?
@@nicholasmorsovillo2752 when Rodimus brings Prime's body back to base, Wreckgar uses about 3 Star Trek references in a row. ''I'm a Doctor, not a forklift'', ''The engines, they cannot take the strain'' (in Scottish accent) and ''He's dead Jim''..The scene starts at 14:55
I still can not believe how long this series has lasted since I was kid in the 1970s.
OMG! I remember that line, too! It was epic 35 years ago and is still epic today!
At the time, this eleven year old girl was in awe! Speechless! :)
6:33 Even Swindle wants to know if she’s alright.
"Every Combaticon has a soft side..." (cues 80's power ballad)
He is trying to sell the hospital new equipment
It was streetwise
@@chrisedwards3214 well yeah. But if you look at 6:33 there is an animation error, Swindle is with the Autobots.
One of the funniest animation errors imo
The Best displays of leadership seen by Rodimus can be found in this episode. Ironic as he was passing the baton back to Optimus, it's like the thought of not being leader anymore gives him a second wind.
when the covid pandemic broke out i automatically thought about this episode.
If only the Matrix could help us now.
Sure did get people fighting now didn't it, lol.
Yes in more ways than you think... Because of the pandemic I'm right back here watching this episode.
So did I!
I thought exactly the same too so it's nice to find some like minds. The more Covid eeks out its horrid narrative the more I wonder just when will Prime turn up?
Poor Optimus, even in death he still can't rest in peace.
If you haven't heard Marv Wolfman before, he wrote this two-part season 3 finale, he also wrote the DC crossover comic Crisis On Infinite Earths, he later appear as guest cameo in the Arrowverse crossover TV series of the same title.
Sky-Lynx: It's true! Our leader is back!
Optimus Prime: Yes Sky-Lynx! And this time, no Force in the universe can stop me!
Greatest line in cartoon history
“Now sky lynx where are prowl ironhide and all the other deactivated autobots bodies? This quintesson can repair them and we can tackle this issue together”
Sky lynx: “erm prime you incinerated all there bodies in a sun a little while back”
Prime: “shit!!”
Unless he's in the Japanese Continuity. Because 4 episodes later bye bye Optimus Prime.
@@Webbman76 That's funny in the Japanese continuity they show Prime being OP, yet they show him offline afterwards.
Wreck-Gar's scene was damn funny. So many references from TV land.
I remember when this episode first aired and I got home from school to watch it on tape (my mom graciously taped it for me as it aired during school hours in the morning) and my mind was happily blown that not only was Prime back but we GOT TO SEE MEGATRON! Wish we had a few more flashbacks in these two episodes to see some more old faces.
That exoskeleton is like leg brace for Jessica, Dr. Morgan should thank the Protectobots to have her walk
Unfortunately, I think Dr. Morgan was more blinded by the fact that robots like the Autobots had any role in their lives, and sees their existence as a threat to everything.
@@Agent_1701-D only because the Decepticons were only stealing the metal that Morgan and Jeffrey made. And Jeffery felt his face was scared by an old battle between Optimus and Megatron
They have those exoskeleton braces for real now. It's incredible!!
@@elliotttafel578 Also, I'm thinking to myself "man, this dude is complaining about a damn scar on his face when he should be thankful he's still alive." If Jessica wasn't hurt in the accident, which in itself WAS an accident as well, the hate spores they found could have destroyed everyone, and all over a scar on Jeffrey's face. Just wow.
If I have to be totally honest, I think that exoskeleton on her legs looks like she’s wearing sexy underwear over her clothing or something. Still, that scientist should be grateful to the Autobots for saving Jessica life. If he weren’t blinded by jealousy and vengeance, then……..
This intro was also epic, loved the darkness
I was a happy kid in the 80s when they brought optimus back to life
Computron think too much 😂😂😂😂😂 Love it!!!
Love the scaling. The guy walks in to the room and the door is normal size to him which would mean all the items in the room would be scaled for his size but are also still scaled for megaton and Optimus
Ultra Magnus: "Where's that punk Rodimus Prime? I WANT HIM!!" Hmm.. has Magnus had a secret grudge against Rodimus this whole time for taking the matrix from him? 🤔
I think it's more that Rodimus is prone to making hotheaded decisions but because he is the leader Ultra Magnus has to listen even when he knows it's a bad idea. The plague basically makes everyone unhinged psychos, so after falling into a trap cause of him Ultra Magnus's hate boner is purely focused on Rodimus,
@Shak I don't think I'd want to see Ultra Magnus's "hate boner" 😂
love how bruticus was barely taller then the rest of the Decepticons in this

(19:13) 'The main memory bug' - That was the crucial difference between this episode and 'Dark Awakening'. Without that piece of curcitry, Optimus would merely be a (programmed) robotic zombie! The quintessons removed (and probably wrecked) the original one in that episode, so how they managed to create a like-for-like new one from scratch is even more remarkable (actually if you observe closely in the Rebirth, the section above his forehead is fully gray instead of partially blue, so perhaps it is not exactly the same as the original memory bug, but close enough).
8:50 this line here, I wish I had the strength to tell that to my family a decade ago
I know it's not my business but I hope you are feeling okay and I'm sorry if you are going through a tough time.
For years I thoughts humans here were the real villains….
However I finally understand, the father was infected with the hate-spores from the beginning.
Only gradually
I remember seeing Dead Ass Optimus on Tv after school.
It was badass.
20:13 Ladies and gentlemen
Optimus Prime is back from the dead!
Funny how Optimus Prime's body was in worse shape in a previous episode: Dark Awakening. For goodness sake, no continuity at all!
Different animation companies is probably one of reasons why.
He’s back he is BACK!!! Optimus Prime is back that the end of this episode, when we need him the most, it’s not transformers without Optimus Prime😊😊😊
The biggest moment in Transformers tv history!!!
15:09 ha! i love the bits they do god i love when back in the day you could get away with almost anything just like with the He's dead Jim Star Trek reference. and its frightening that even when Optimus is nonfunctioning that arm still knocked Sky Lynix a couple feet backwards. shows how powerful he is.
Rodimus always got the short end of the stick.
Yep.🥺Poor Rodimus.🥺
This season states Optimus was built by the Quintessons but it’s also implied that it was Alpha Trion who created him. So the Quintessons programmed Alpha Trion to do it? Ultimately in G1 they were all reliant on a Quintesson made supercomputer to achieve consciousness before some continuities invented Cold Construction.
It wasn't until season three that the Transformers became aware of who built them. The Quintessons built Orion Pax, who Alpha Trion rebuilt into Optimus Prime in season 2's "War Dawn."
i look at it this way in a way they did create prime well orion pax alpha trion i think just rebuilt orion paxes frame into optimus prime however i could be totaly wrong.
so wait, the Quintessons built the ancestors to the Autobots and Decepticons, so who made Vector Sigma ??? because Vector Sigma said "before Cybertron was, I was"
@@Wolffen51 The Quintessons did. He was built first and then they built Cybertron around him.

As a child renting this from blockbuster and seeing optimus prime return after being traumatised from his death in the film was enlightening.

15:00Wreck Gar watching a lot of classic Star Trek.
As he stated in The 1986 movie, he talks TV.
He knows the old Legend of Zelda Cartoon too^^
When this episode was new the original Trek reruns were still in the hot Monday-Friday "after the news but before prime time" zone, plus the Trek movies were on that "Spock's dead, now he's back" vibe...!
Think he was watching the episode when spock goes nuts?
19:57 they have cut out part of the episode. I remember that when Optimus was on the chair they tried to reactivate him but it fail and almost blew him up. Then they fixed the issue and then it goes to the scene where the Quintession says “once again we are ready, but if this does not work then Optimus Prime will never live again.”
If someone has a old VHS recording they will probably find the lost scene.
I remember reading that scene in the script for the episode but not ever seeing it actually in the episode.
@@tdtellem I definitely seen it. Hundreds of times when I was a kid. It exists.
