The Decepticons decide to steal the key to the Plasma Energy Chamber, the forge where the original Autobots were created millions of years ago. The Autobots regain the key, but a volt of Plasma Energy strikes their ship, sending them millions of miles into space. They crash land on a planet called Nebulos, where some transformations are about to take place, which will result in uniting the Autobots with a band of Nebulan rebels to become a new breed of Transformer known as the Headmasters.

RIP to the writer of this episode, David Wise, who died last year due to lung cancer. He wrote some of the most popular episodes including War Dawn and The Key to Vector Sigma.
Yup...I miss him a lot.
He also wrote a couple of controversial ones. Some would say that "Kremzeek" and "Day of the Machines" was not exactly his best work. Condolences to David Wise's family.

Oh yeah. It shows how much Spike has grown given his long involvement with the Autobots along with his dad, Carly, and Daniel.
Non-intervention, in cases like this, is complicity, so Spike definitely made the right choice.
After 3 seasons of voicing Autobots, Peter Cullen lends his voice to no less than 3 Decepticons in this mini series.

While their time on screen may have been brief I find that most of the new Decepticons in this shortened season to be some of coolest.
Never liked the Gorilla or Bat..but the rest, yeah, they looked great.

@@prfctcellrulz JG1 is a joke. After Magnus and Galvatron get killed off, it gets a LOT worse than Season 3 G1. Such that in the last couple of episodes it was hard to tell where it ultimately ended up.
At least with the Rebirth we have a satisfactory conclusion, even though as TF fans it may not necessarily be the one that we wanted at the time.

@@swordkingx4874 You must have never read the comic book. It started the G1 show and lasted several years after it was cancelled. They always had a feature robot at the back of the book, and often the spot that said first appearance was: "Right here". But at least this is better than season 3 that basically took all the cool deceps and even autos and made them dumb shit. Like Rodimus, sweeps, Galvatron and Cyclonus.

That was a temporary truce plus months passed since the return of optimus prime and rebirth
Galvatron has to deal with the loss of the last war as shown in the 1986 movie..and the overall autobot dominance of space. Prior to that, autobots were the underdogs running away from Megatron as guerilla fighters. So I can understand him losing his shit and being angry all the time like a mob boss who is getting his corners taken by rival gangs haha
-Season 1: autobots are the rebel alliance having to run all the time and their home planet of Cybertron is dominated by the bad guys. Autobots are constantly on the defensive for most of the time while the decepticons are raiding earth for energon to stockpile in hopes of killing off the autobots once and for all.
-post movie: autobots are happy and now control cybertron, earth and also have humans traveling in space as patrols as support crew. Overall the decepticons are the underdogs trying to claw back some of the power they once had. The leader is more powerful than megatron but competing with other evil aliens in the galaxy for dominance. His decepticons are not as feared as they were in season 1 as humans are "more futuristic" now. (the military must have progressed a lot since the 1980s tech they had in season 1) Even Astrotrain comments that decepticons were not so starving for energon and fighting amoungst themselves "in the days of megatron". He can see they are now the ones having to struggle to survive and it makes perfect sense because after a war the losing side is much poorer now and in the real world the winning side usually expects the loser to even pay reparations for the damage caused by the war. (eg germany after WW2) Obviously that didn't happen and decepticons are free to roam around like bandits but the effect is the same since they have no outside support as quintessons are just there to exploit them for their own agenda. Whereas the autobots have the humans and other peaceful aliens who attended the galactic olympics. (having friends = more resources plus being good guys they are not going to backstab you)

@@donmccullen1973 yes but by the Return of Optimus Prime and certainly that last scene he was pretty much sane again, even bantering with his old foe as they searched for the ore Prime needed.
Crazy Galvatron was fun for a while (eg : webworld) but I always missed Megatron during S3 except for that above episode. As a Star Trek fan too you'd think I'd prefer Leonard Nimoy's interpretation of the character in the movie, but Frank Welker was the man for Megatron - before and after his run in with Unicron - which is also why it was great to have him back in Transformers Prime.

Best part of the episode is seeing Snapdragon and Apeface for the first time. Two of the best and criminally underused characters and toys in TF. I mean, c'mon, he's a Decepticon named after a flower! That's awesome!
Totally with you on Snapdragon, thought he was kick-ass since his G1 box art, he's new figure from ER is cool too.
@@butterflykatana I like it. It kinda looks like a SR-71 blackbird. Too bad the cartoon ended. At this time I think the kids who grew up watching the transformers while in elementary school were in highschool by that time and probably outgrew playing with toys at this point which usually means you got to reboot the cartoon again for the next kids. That's probably why the story had to end to wrap things up. If nobody is buying the toys the animation has no funding. Toy sales keep cartoons alive. Thundercats reboot in 2011 is proof of this. Got cancelled prematurely. It would have lived if the toys were marketed heavily and there were kids buying the merch. So far hasbro is doing is great job with the Siege, earthrise, Kingdom toys quality by exploiting our nostaglia for the original 80s and 90s G1 era toon. It seems to work because adult have more disposable income and miss the 1980s cheese.

Snapdragon was in the original G1 comic book. Apeface makes me think of that hideous Beast Wars.
You're speaking my language! Many stellar cycles ago my brother and I got Apeface (me) and Snapdragon (him) for Christmas. Since then I was attached to that pair. I even kept mine in decent condition for all these years and payed about $35 getting a replacement gun and shield for him on eBay.
2:07 - Gotta give Freeway props for trying to tell Snapdragon to back off, before he got punted into a wall HARD. It also was funny when Freeway said "Well, since ya put it that way--!" in a bit of an embarrassed tone.
And there we have it. The final storyarc of the american G1 cartoon. After that, Takara steps in.
One thing i instantly got is these major Space Odyssey of Arthur Clark vibes through the entire 3 parter.
Actually, I'd say the other way around. Takara before this series. If it were after, there would be a problem in the timeline to explain how Daniel's injury/paralysis "goes away" in the Japanese Headmasters series, let alone Optimus Prime again.

I never said the injuries ''went away''. I said that due to advanced cybertronian tech, Daniel managed to recover.
@@athlonen Takara actually ignored rebirth (season 4) entirely, so Optimus returns at the end of season 3, then it's straight into their own continuity, Daniel has no injuries to explain away, as they happened in season 4

It really wasn't though.
The Japanese version falls under "so bad it's good", mostly because of the unintentionally comical English dubbing. This 3-parter on the other hand was just dreadful.

I finally sat down and watched all 3 episodes. I don't mind this introduction of Headmasters and Targetmasters. I also thought the combination of Daniel and Arcee, and Spike and Cerebros was well done.

It was initially planned for five parts. Unfortunately, they were told to restrict it and could not do the five parter. Hence, the words of one of the guy who contributed, the balonium factor was put in to finish it up.

@@donmccullen1973 The Japanese Transformers: Headmasters ignores Rebirth and is the closest thing to a sequel. Then Tranformers: Super-god Masterforce, Victory, and finally Zone.

Transformers victory is on here but the sound quality is really something. Headmasters keeps popping up and then disappearing.
I didn't see this until years after G1 had ended because I lived out of the US from 1986-1990. During that time I became fully invested in the Marvel comic version of Transformers, and let me say, seeing Zarak as a goofy green alien in the cartoon was...something.
It was cool seeing zarak being taken over by scorpions personality in the comics when you make a deal with the devil
This season is so underrated and unfairly criticised by the fan base imo..l love it, it's full of action right from the start..Prime is back kicking ass, Vector Sigma and Alpha Trion are back in the action, Hotrod is back being great as Hotrod. The animation is fine for the most part, (except for the scale of Cybertron) it's like a blend of season 2&3 animation.
I'm really glad it was only a 3 parter and wasn't dragged out like the borefest of Five Faces of Darkness but l wish there had been a full season after this to flesh out all the new characters. I was sad to learn these were the last episodes but if it had to end, re establishing the Golden age of Cybertron was the perfect way to do it as that was the whole purpose of the series from the beginning. Also having Spike be the one responsible for revitalising the planet was ingenious as it brought the show full circle.
You could say Vector Sigma was involved in the events going right back to the very first episode, pulling the strings right from the start. Firstly by arranging for them to leave Cybertron in search of energy, to crash land on Earth, to be in stasis for four million years, then to meet Spike who would one day use the power of Earth's Sun to revitalise Cybertron. Also Spike becoming part of the most powerful Autobot ever to exist was very fitting and satisfying. But that's just my take on it all.
Just like you said the three episodes of the rebirth was the best to me Optimus prime with back that the sigma was back prime kicking ass and taking names now that’s what’s up the intro oh my goodness I could go on and on about how awesome the intro is or was the head masters The target masters Man I’m so glad Hasbro Are finally releasing the transformers on RUclips

Now alpha trion was planning on restoring Cybertron. To the golden age from the start
A3 goes into the future meets rodimus and seed the future then goes back to his time leads the rebellion defeats the quints then start to planning on the future of Cybertron
He saw Orion pax was from the prime lineage so he rebuilt him into Optimus and later before he merged with.vector sigma he told prime I created you
Alpha trion didn't die which shocked prime at first alpha trion spoke through vector sigma and was never shut down
Ironically Megatron didn't think to destroy vector sigma when he conquered cybertron
The greatest heartbreak of my 80's childhood was G1 ending on a Rebirth cliffhanger & cancelled.
I feel ya on that yo. Luckily Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out right after Transformers ended.
I would redo these three episodes, but without the organic
aspect and replace them as mini-cons that left Cybertron to create
their own colony (like in the Japanese version) , but are also in
a civil war like the Auto-Bots and Decepticons.
But Spike STILL creates Fort-Max.
I"m just happy that everyone can now see why this genre has lasted for soo long and can be shared with everyone!
Saddest part is that i'm usally the only one that likes the Mini-Cons/Micromasters since i'm mostly a sucker for mini Transformer toys to collect.
Had this on vhs. Feel truely blessed to have watched this when I was a kid. This set the bar to what would come

God I miss this era we had the best cartoons .
I remember my dad buying this for me on VHS from a secondhand store that used to have a mini video library of different genres and every week in the children's section was Transformers tapes, i found a copy of The Rebirth which had a cool pic of Fortress Maximus on the cover and it blew me away to see all of these unusual Autobbots and Decepticons appearing out of nowhere every second. Even though, i always consider the Return Of Optimus Prime to be the true series finale of the show, The Rebirth still to this day remains an important part of my childhood.

Don't ask me to hate Season 4. Yes, AKOM did 100% of the animation here, but aside from some silly mistakes in the first few minutes, they actually did a good job this time around. There's lots of wonderfully fluid animation here. Add in bits of intrigue and some great lines of dialog, and this trilogy of episodes turned out a lot better than it had any right to be.
It's in-house this time: for the first time ever, the animators are listed in the credits, and longtime AKOM head staffer Jae Ho Hong is involved. AKOM outsourced mostly to Sam Young in season 3, so they receive blame mostly as the production company.

This three-parter is okay but I always preferred the Japanese Headmaster concept of smaller robots connecting to larger robot bodies.

Man when I first saw Cerebros in this episode and the way he talks reminds me a bit of both First Aide and the Technobots as First Aide was a pacifist who hates fighting and the Technobots talk in technobabble.

The amount of creativity in these final episodes only shown we were robbed of what could have been a fantastic season. The new characters were great, the new Transformer Nebulon dynamic would have really shaken things up instead it went to Takara where they sucked all their individuality out and cancelled characters like Sky Lynx.
Sky Lynx wasn't even in Headmasters but I agree with the rest👌

We never got to see the final battle between Optimus Prime and Galvatron aka Megatron in season 4. I felt it was a miss opportunity.
You mean Optimus Prime and the return of Megatron that Megatron is not being Galvatron Megatron is being Megatron at the same time Megatron gets back to his old body for the final battle.

It's great they got Optimus Prime back in charge, but Goldbug would still take some getting used to. This was originally going to be a 5 -part mini- series, but thanks to some deep budget cutbacks, it was reduced to 3.
Sometimes I think in a alternative universe, Counterpunch and Punch would be a split personality disorder.

The Targetmasters get more screen time in the title sequence than they do in the whole story

Ya know when I first saw this episode it reminded me of the season 2 episode 'City of Steel' where after the Constructicon Hook disassembled Optimus and through half of the episode Optimus was a talking disembodied head who could control his scattered body parts whether they were his legs,his right arm or an Alligatacon that was his whole torso and left arm it was like Optimus had become the very first Humanoid/Beast Headmaster Transformer as he was able to control or summon his body parts with a signal from his brain and as a disembodied head he was able to still talk all anyone had to do was take hold of his vocalizer wires.
(2:20) In Season 3 the Technobots were suppose to be the Autbots most advanced combiner. Yet in Season 4 they seem completely amateur, being easily overpowered by the new Decepticons. Actually this was true about a lot of the Combiners - in one season they were powerful, the next season they were completely useless - the Constructicons in particular from Seasons 2 -> 3.
Guess Glavatron decided to go back to how things were, before the movie, now that Optimus Prime is back.

Once again, no explanation of where half the characters suddenly appeared from. I think the producers underestimated the intelligence of children and just how much origin stories like "SOS Dinobots", "The Key to Vector Sigma", "Starscream's Brigade" etc were appreciated!
Well in this case you could say they were always on Cybertron. It's not like season 2 where they just inexplicably appear with Optimus' group on Earth
According to the Secret Files of Teletraan 2, a number of Autobots escaped off world during the war. Seemingly implying where all these new characters came from.
Cosmic Rust/Fight or Flee for example established there were other Autobot colonies. In addition to the Junkions.

Yeah but origin stories often conflict each other further down the line. Heavy Metal War, The Secret of Omega Supreme and The Five Faces of Darkness Ep4 all offer differing views of where the Constructicons came from. By saying they 'just appeared' allows people to make up whatever they want without worrying about future writers ballsing it up
Definitely trying a new gimmick to sell some new toys with the headmasters! 🤣
They had to put over those gimmicks in an attempt to stay relevant. In the end, it was the CHARACTERS that brought the money, not the gimmicks.

Nothing like the 80s. Good era to be a kid with these types of cartoon to see and enjoy. It was very entertaining to spend time. Wish they could create cartoon for the children to see like the ones the had in the 80s.
Always wondered if there would ever be a proper planned ending for G1 if they had continued with S4, instead of the Japanese taking the reigns.
I think this is as close an ending as we'd get.
I alway considered return of optimus prime to be a great finaly. Optimus is back, galvatron is cured of his insanity and the future is open but looking good.
I also think the return of Optimus Prime was the perfect ending. However I would have loved to see what the plans from the writers were projecting forward. The US explanations for the evolutions of the Transformers brand my not have been perfect, but it laid the framework for the its success more then the Japanese version.
So about the proper ending I think they should in prison the decepticon and the Decepticons will be in jail.
Japan didn't take the reigns after this. Takara split with Hasbro during shortly before this series started. In the Japanese series, they had killed off OP again, and Hasbro couldn't do that because of the backlash from the Movie, Dark Awakening, and the Return of Optimus Prime. So Hasbro was stuck and basically went it alone from this series going forward, which rather tanked.

These episode’s color palette always looked darker and not humid than the others, I don’t know if that was intentional or just how the transfer has suffered over the years

This is when I stop watching Transformers around season 4 couldn't get home on time after school. It comes on at 4:00pm right after Thundercat's on channel 11 Eastcoast zone.
I forgot to mention the Decepticon Horrorcons: Apeface and Snapdragon, the latter one which famously mauled Daniel Witwicky in that scene!

According to the writer the Late David Wise he was contracted to write a 5 part opener to Season 4. However early on it was decided to make those 5 episodes ALL of Season 4 meaning Wise would have to include the ENTIRE 1987 toyline in the the saga. After he did that they cut it back FURTHER to just 3 episodes and he would still need to include the entire toyline in it.... No wonder its so messy

Great episode but was expecting to see more from sixshot (not just a few seconds showing all his transformations). On the japanese Headmasters episode is one of the main characters and we have the opportunity to see more transformations from him combing his gun/beast mode o gun/spaceship mode
