Cosmic Rust | Transformers: Generation 1 | Season 2 | E44 | Hasbro Pulse
When Megatron becomes infected with a plague that threatens to wipe out entire races of robots, he decides to kidnap Perceptor and force him to cure him of his infection. But of course, even if Perceptor gives him the cure for this plague, Megatron has no intention of maintaining his part of the bargain. When Megatron is cured, he uses the same plague as a weapon against Perceptor and the other Autobots. But will the Autobots be able to get the antidote for the infection before it's too late?

When Starscream says “unfortunately the operation is successful” that is easily the funniest line of the entire series perhaps. Lol
Surprised he didn't try to take over
@@chrisedwards3214 If he did, it would be in the name of his job. His duty IS to take over when the need arises, and in this situation that need could have arisen.
@@j.l.thurman2725 ]p poll
Yeah! I was genuinely surprised myself!
Epic 😂
I like how Starscream figured out the communicator right away. It’s sometimes easy to forget that he was a scientist before the war.
Like he sometime concerns of something
it's easy to forget he's smarter than he's usually portrayed.
While it's true he was a scientist at one point in the distant past, one need only look at human academics to see that most of them have none of the strategic thinking and common sense required to actually lead others. Starscream is vain and simple minded and most leaders would have made an example of him much sooner. Hard to believe it took so long before Galvatron finally killed him.
@@SanjaySingh-oh7hv
A vain and simple mind, killed by an even bigger "vain and simple" mind that later became an unbalanced & disturbed mind?
But, Starscream is the worst?
@@derekbates4316 Why don't you re-watch the original 3-part Transformers pilot episodes? You'll see that Starscream actually helped re-activate the Autobots unintentionally when he fired his weapon at the crash site. And he later causes delays by wasting some of the energon cubes to "test" them, causing additional delay. And even when they are aboard the space cruiser on their way back to Cybertron, he again challenges Megatron who spared him once before, and created the distraction that Mirage needed to wreck the controls and cause the ship to crash. And that's just the first three episodes.
Megatron as portrayed in Generation 1 is a strategic and capable, even if he is a conqueror by nature. He was what some would call "lawful evil" but when he became Galvatron, he was more unstable and dangerous, to be sure, but also more entertaining. I especially liked the Web World episode. But he is still a strong and powerful commander who can get followers.
So yeah, watch them again. Starscream is all about vanity and foolishness, despite being a scientist by training.
Optimus: The Matter duplicator doesn't work, it never worked!
Perceptor kicks machine
Wheeljack: It works!
Even advanced Cybertronian technology can need percussive repair...
I fixed a broken Zoids motor that way. Granted I was more gentle but a few squeezes to the motor casing DID get it working.
And that it is common in Indian House holds!
LOL
Optimus thought the matter duplicator was a complete failure and a lost cause until Perceptor and Wheeljack finally makes it works. They probably should finally make it earlier before Preceptor invented corrostop (aka the only known cure of Cosmic Rust), so they can duplicated the secret catalyst to make more corrostop and also Blaster and Cosmos wouldn't have to go to that failed space trip to find more.
I got a calculator working again with a smack
1:39 “This is a prehistoric communication device you uneducated dolt!’” 5:28 “Perhaps you were made of shoddy materials Megatron.” Starscream was savage on Megatron in this episode!😂😂😂😂

Love how Starscream was showing concern for Astrotrain while Megatron is too busy being concerned for himself despite Astrotrain having worse injuries.
Quite unusual considering Megatron is supposed to be the "all for decepticons" while Starscream is the egotistical one. Probably a switch in the script or something.
@clownplayer7265 I mean Starscream is shown to have concern for his Decepticons several times throughout the series. He cared for Skyfire, he repairs skywarp and blitzwing after they dog fought the Aerialbots in War Dawn, and he was checking on Bruticus after getting suckered punched by Menasor. I think if you weren't getting in the way of his survival or usurpation attempts on Megatron, he goes to help repair fellow cons.
@@Darthzilla99
Mm, true. He also helps fellow seekers in repairs.
I guess it depends whenever and wherever Starscream thinks you are not a hindrance to his schemes.
considering that Astrotrain got blasted by that exploding asteroid, he should have rusted out first...
@@OlJackBurton The astroid got just through him, while Megatron still had one for a while, i suspect that made the virus to spread on him faster.
The banter between Starscream and Megatron is legendary. Starscream was the only one to talk smack back to Megatron!
And he always lived after it too.

I'm surprised Megs didn't shoot him in the back of the head when Starscream said that.
I remember once Dragstrip told Soundwave to tell Megatron to blow it out his exhaust.
The dialogue script for "Cosmic Rust" included additional information on the timing of the colony's founding. Two cut lines between Megatron and Starscream regarding an ancient Autobot inscription reveal the following:
"It says that the Thirteenth Legion of Autobots arrived here the first millennium after the creation of the Autobot Matrix."
"Which would make it about five hundred thousand years before we left for Earth."
Thirteenth Leigon?
@@Z0nor Yeah, I think the scriptwriters wanted to draw similarities between roman's 13th legion army that myteriously vanished from history

there is a thirteenth legion line they say it when teletraan is explaining the plague
Such a shame, too! It would have been the first mention of the Matrix in the series.

Same here. But it freaked me a bit. Owned it on VHS tape I got for my 8th birthday.
You know this is going to be a good episode when it starts out with easily the four most entertaining Decepticons.
"That's a nasty tear in your shoulder, Megatron."
"Brilliant observation, Starscream."
I can't help but find that line amusing. 😆😆
"Okay, people! This is a mutiny! No, no, a highjack! I mean, WE'RE TAKING OVER THIS BOAT!"

His lines in “the burden hardest to bear” were also hilarious
7:31 Breakdown: Okay people this is a mutiny. No no a hijack. I mean we're taking over this boat! Snap to it everybody and into the captain's cabin!😆
He's gotta work on his lines.
Didn’t he mean a hostage or a hold up 😂😂😂
This intro actually tells the story of the first season, the second season and the Movie. Autobots (Symbol) travels through space. The Decepticons follow and collide. They hit a volcano. Dinobots are created. Than we get into the second season. Triple changers arrive on the scene, followed by Omega Supreme who fights with Astrotrain, than we see the insecticons live and finally, Optimus and Megatron fight to the end. Kind of a neat recap and a intro.
Went over my head..I never saw it that way. Cool.
The insecticons show up in Season one.
I can’t believe I never realised that! That was a nice touch from Marvel and Sunbow!
"Unfortunately, the operation was successful"

I love this episode because even if perceptor is infected with the cosmic rust Optimus is still willing to save him even if it means him also getting the cosmic rust itself.
This episode stuck out in my mind more than any other. It kinda reminds me of the GI Joe episode where snakes eyes locks himself in with the radiation thing to save the other people, in one of the MASS device episodes.
Breakdown nervously taking over the boat made this episode for me
The Stunticons are rude just like the rest of the Decepticons.
Whoa seeing megatron's hand fall off like that reminds me of bootleg toys I bought. hahah

19:02 Megatron be like: " *Rust* in peace, Prime!"
Fact: Though the title disease is more akin to Bubonic Plague or Smallpox, Paul Davids was inspired to write this episode from the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
That intro is a masterpiece of animation!
G1 and prime have amazing intros
Except the bit where Prime and Megatron fall into some dimensional portal. Looks like they were killed in a virtual simulator.
@@UToobUsername01 LOL!
I love the full transformations in barely a heartbeat
They saved all the animation errors for the show.
In hindsight, some of the stuff they were doing in Season 2, by setting stories in space and showing more Cybertronian looking Transformers, was setting the stage for what we’d see in the movie and season 3
The cosmic rust seems to have permanently altered Megatron's circuits to be even more sadistic than he was previously. He had a superweapon capable of destroying the Autobots outright yet he only uses it as central heating in order to destroy them slowly.
This made me realize starscream is not only the scientist but also the medic for the team…so why does megatron get rid of him so many times
In War Dawn Starscream also acts as Medic to Skywarp when his wing was "busted."
Ummm......maybe because Starscream was trying to overthrow Megatron every chance he got.
Soundwave could make a good librarian.
Megatron gets hit by a meteor fragment and Starscream doesn't give his standard "Megatron has fallen...!" speach? Bizarre.
He just tried a bunch of major coups a few eps before. I guess he was chilled out for a bit lol
“If Cybertron be your home... far away, never Rome... if you hear this message listen in fear... just like us you to will rust... all shal be turned, to dust”
That’s sinister.
Pretty dark for Transformers. Yet, of course, leave it to Megatron to not heed the warning that almost killed him.

Megatron: "Starscream! Keep your grubby fingers off that! It could be a booby trap!"
Starscream: "What trap? This is a prehistoric communication device, you UNEDUCATED DOLT!"

it's a reference to that caste system Cybertron followed before the war
Megatron was sparked as a energon miner turned gladiator, and as such, he wasn't allowed to get an education of any thing other than mining and fighting
Starscream, on the other hand, was sparked as a seeker, and as such, he was allowed to attend science academy and learn important knowledge
I mean it's.... Kinda touching? Megatron basically told him to be careful or he could get hurt, right? Lol
In the comic books, we had the Scraplets. In the animated series, we had Cosmic Rust. The transformers just can't catch a break. :-)
We still have Cosmic Rust nowadays. Even variations of it like Red Rust from IDW or the Plague of Rust from Cyberverse.
Also, the Scraplets first appeared in an issue of the G1 Marvel comic from 1987, they were also a G1 thing. It was just the Aligned shows that basically popularized it.
@@tannerprice2018 and don't forget they hit on the Rust in the original comics too. I had one where Prime was a victim of it.

The thing that made scraplets just that bit more sinister was that they had a degree of intelligence - basically a disease with a sense of intent.

Gotta love how it even has a fun Combiner vs. Combiner fight.
That is the reason why Megatron kept Starscream despite knowing the latter
numerous attempts to usurp his leadership. Starscream used to be a scientist and explorer and his scientific knowledge is still indispensable to the Decepticons’ cause which even surpassed even his leader or Soundwave. And Starscream once again proved to Megatron, even calling his leader an “uneducated dolt”.
"I'm going to record the warning before we perish."
"Are you going to make it rhyme?"
"Of course I am! How are they supposed to take it seriously if it doesn't rhyme?"
To be fair the message gave me chills, it’s amazing how rhyming can both be comedic and chilling
I love relationships between humans and Transformers to have a friendship in need.
2:42 Starscream: How cute, A lightning bug.
Astrotrain: If that's a lightning bug, I sure to meet up with a dragonfly.
I like optimus ' speech of determination. " we must go or lose Perceptor forever. Megatron will have us on his terms and on his turf! Autobots transform and roll out!! "
Yes
Which made him a great leader.
When Megatron's hand hit the floor like a piece of rubber I said oh they messed up. Then I rationalized that it's a side effect of the disease: deteriorating metal into rubber. ANYTHING to believe this is real. ahahahhaa

Perceptor indeed deserves a National Scientific Achievement Award for his invention, corrostop, which it's not just removed and prevented corrosion and rust of any form, but it's the only known cure for the dreaded Cosmic Rust. Too bad that he and Wheejack didn't finally made the matter duplicator works a lot sooner, so they can duplicated Ingredient X, so they can make more corrostop to immediately cured all of the Autobots from Cosmic Rust and also used it on all of the other monuments in the world.
That's interesting while astrotrain is temporarily decommissioned they have blitzwing as their transport.
Edit: speaking of astrotrain I'm a bit surprised astrotrain didn't catch the plague
He must've offscreen.
Also why is Astrotrain's voice so weird?
I never noticed how mature the language can be in these cartoons sometimes. I'm not sure an 8 year old today would understand when Astrotrain says "the omens are ill"... whereas I remember imitating this language sometimes when I was a kid.
I’ve said many times that the transformers was the first cartoon aimed at such a young audience to use such an advanced vocabulary. Even from the very first episode, listen to soundwaves very first lines. No way anyone under 16 (and probably older!) would know what he meant. I think that was also part of the appeal, watching it made you want to be smarter and understand those words.
When I first saw this episode and heard of the Cosmic Rust one thing I had always wondered about after learning of the Quintessons being responsible for creating the Transformers is if they were the ones who created the cosmic Rust as we've seen in this episode it is the only cosmic organic substance capable of destroying the Transformers both Autobot and Decepticon as Megatron was the first to be infected by it from that asteroid fragment that punched through AstroTrain's hull near his main thrusters.
