It doesn't take strength or length of fingers. You tap the drum with your finger tips. Where you tap and how fast/hard you flick your fingertips controlling the sound. You will need to experiment until the sound comes well. It's not an instant success, you need to spend the time to get to know your instrument. You can also use felt or rubber tipped mallets to play, just ensure the taps are not too hard so you don't knock the drum out of tune.
