    I have a 5 by 8 foot homemade insulated trailer that I pull behind my Jeep. I live in northern Minnesota where it does get a little chilly. I took it out about two weeks ago when it got down to 20 below zero fahrenheit. I heated the unit with my 2000 watt generator and an electric heater inside that Drew about 1200 watts. It worked wonderful and consumed about 2 gallons of gasoline in the generator in a 24-hour. I kept the temperature at about 68 to 72 degrees. The beauty of electric heat is that it is totally safe. Running the generator also served to cook my meals on my electric skillet. Thanks for the great review and I love your humor!

    Good!! I'm really glad you reviewed that ceramic heater. I have a similar one. Got it at a yard sale for $5.00 and it is a super dandy heater but I wasn't sure it would do the job in a small camper with those kinds of temps. Now I know. Nice. Thanks.

    Just so you know, the Pelonis disc furnace...I picked up a couple of them a few years back now, at Walmart...they were super cheap there...I think we gave, at that time, around $20 for each one. I'm sorry now that I didn't save them...but, we were using them when our regular wall heaters went out, in our home...we were in the process of changing out our heating source completely, but didn't get it finished by the time the cold hit...so, we used these...they keep a small space pretty warm...but, if you are in a larger RV, you will need a couple of them...at least one on both ends of your RV. I really enjoyed your video on this subject...you did a really good job!! BTW, I know some people that actually have purchased dehumidifiers, for their RV's just for this reason. A teardrop is pretty small already, so it might not be a great idea for the room it may take up. Take care and thanks so much for putting this video up for everyone to get a better idea how to stay warm in the winter in their RV's...😊

    Pelonis heaters Hands down are the best you can buy.
    The reason i know this i grew up very poor and lived in a drafty home. Nothing worked better to heat my room then that heater right there. Enjoy they last forever just one tip clean the filter regularly and take a flashlight in the front once a year while using air to blow out the debris the filter didn't catch or the efficiency drops tremendously.😊 hope that helps someone in their purchase.

    Good review. I concur. My next incarnation of heat will be the diesel parking heater. I've used every method you described and my favorite is the ceramic IF you have electricity.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  5 лет назад +2

      There is lots of buzz on the diesel heaters. In my case I did not want
      to introduce another fuel since I have propane. But for me the real show
      stopper was the electrical consumption of the glow plug. ruclips.net/video/OjvcBiBAqMQ/видео.html

    Great info. I haven't bought anything yet, but I am planning on needing heat. I have thought that using a small quiet generator and electric heat might be the way to go but I haven't found this much real world testing into how that might work. I had hoped the smaller heater would work, now I know better. Thank you for doing the experiment and sharing the results.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  3 года назад +1

      Thanks William. I would the standard tools for this problem. Measure the interior size. Calculate the square feet. You can look up how many BTUs it takes to heat that space. Then use an on line calculator to convert the BTUs to watts. That will put you in the ball park. I provisioned for the lowest outside temps I expect to encounter. -20F I am glad I did.I was on grid when I did this test. Off grid I use propane. Good Luck I hope to do more deep freeze camping this winter. Thank You for watching. Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweemsvideos

I've been using Walmart heaters. Thing is, I seam to get duds. I have replaced heaters about every 2 months. Go inexpensive but not cheap would be my advice.

    Since you camp a lot in the winter, then I would recommend getting the Exped Mega Mat Duo 10 or 15. So comfy, adjustable, lightweight compared to heavy foam, insulated with R 9.5 value. It warms up from your body heat and reflects it back to you. Such a great mattress for cold weather camping! Also I use a wonderful electric blanket with Safe & Warm technology which is awesome and makes sleeping in super cold weather very comfortable. We used the exped, electric throw blanket and small heater in a 1987 Coleman tent trailer and slept comfortably all night. That’s saying a lot since we didn’t have a curtain to divide the tent trailer to just warm the sleeping area. The Exped would be mold resistant and easy to clean.

    Dear Cosmo, that little white thing for 20$ is not all useless one! It have a great and efficient way of use: get with it under the blanket or in the sleeping bag and switch it on there! Within one minute you will feel as warm as in a sauna! One minute is almost enough, then switch off. If need be one can switch on for several more times if necessary in the night time. And even 10 times a night won't run down your battery.

      @@CosmoWeems that's almost an idea for a video: checking out the pieces of advice from feedback!
      The way I suggest is a good one to heat up when you got cold, perhaps after a walk, especially if a rain hit suddenly or something like that. A car heater will take 10 minutes to heat up the engine, that you gas heater will have some time to heat up the cabin too, but that little 20$ beast under the blanket will start heating in three seconds. That's worth an experiment!

    1500 watts is about 5500 BTU's and is said to heat up to 150 square feet. I have a 1500 watt heater I use to heat a 20 foot travel trailer, about 160 sq feet comfortable down to 9* but runs most of the night when that cold. My electric I calculate to be about the same cost as propane, but with out going to fill tanks. I have a buddy heater also I use for some extra heat if watching TV or eating in the living room end of the trailer. Good info. Nice little trailer. I subscribed. Thank you

    Many of those ceramic heaters use a component called a PTC heater in them. The neat thing about a PTC heater is it will only rise to it's design temperature. They make 12 volt 60 degree Celsius chips that are about an inch by an inch in a half size. I have been interested in putting some eighth inch aluminum plate under the mattress and attaching PTC chips to it. Think about using an electric blanket when you have access to electric. It will also heat up your mattress in no time too. You may already have one at home and they fold up and are easy to pack away. You could use your existing on-board propane heater to take the "nip" off the inside cabin air and then either turn it off or set it very low and then enjoy dialing in your desired warmth on the electric blanket.

    1500 watts is the max that is allowed to be used with a standard 15 amp breaker, hence why so many space heaters you see are rated "1500 watts" and regardless of the physical size of the unit, the wattage rating is the only thing that matters. They type of heater is largely irrelevant in terms of heat production as converting electricity to heat is pretty much the only thing that you can do that's 100% efficient, (line loss, fan blowing air... it all dissipates to heat eventually... ;)
    Having said that, you may want to experiment with an oil filled type. It will heat the space slower, since the oil in the heater needs to come to temperature first and there is no fan to circulate air about the cabin but they're also the safest type of electric heat source since they don't have any crazy hot surfaces that could start fires if someone accidentally knocked it over.

    "If there were two of us in here......", made me think about the advantage of having another warm human body in that small an environment. Cost wise. Definitely some pros and cons. However, my experience suggests that once you throw in the cost of dinners, transportation, and especially, attorney fees when the heat dies down, it would probably be, financially at least, not a wise thing to do.
    Totally agree with electric heat being the best if power is available. Many, many devices available and probably impossible to beat in terms of cost and convenience.
    Imagine what it would be like to have technology advanced to the point where that kind of energy could be stored after being collected by a solar panel or some as yet undiscovered/developed energy source to allow boon-docking with electric heat. We probably have the knowledge if some great mind or minds would simply go, "OK. Time to do it.". I mean if we can go to the moon or think about going to mars we can certainly find a way to heat a teardrop or Scamp without hauling large quantities of fuel.

    It took 90 minutes to heat that tiny trailer? I think you need to check your insulation to be sure your trailer is insulated.

      Ya to get the mattress and wall all warmed up tool that long. It was 10 degrees when I got in there. Only the ceasing is insulated Walls are plywood covered with aluminum. floor is not insulated. I can not think of a single teardrop that is fully insulated. Thanks You! =Cosmo Check my other

      @@CosmoWeems Wow.. you'd think the factory would fully insulate them. But I enjoyed your video. Cheers.
      I recently purchased a 7x12 (plus a 2' v-nose) cargo trailer. I'm converting it into a camper to take the kids camping. I'm tired of tent camping. lol. I needed a cargo trailer.. and didn't want both a trailer and a camper.. so I figured I could convert it in a way that I can use it for both purposes. I finished insulating the walls last weekend. I'm moving to the ceiling this coming weekend.

      Cosmo Weems I still tent camp as well. Mostly when I’m on motorcycle trips. But lugging around a ton of tent gear, cots, food, drunk, etc etc.. with a full family.. is getting old. The camper is gonna be a welcome addition to family fun.

    Hello, I am dealing with putting heating on my teardrop and I would like to know your opinion about the called “diesel parking heater “ like this images.app.goo.gl/98T121hURR1qcrGHA. Is it the same that in your video you said that you don’t like? I Argentina there are not many options and this type looks a good choice. Thank you very much

    Your not very good with your heater in the usa come to europe where fuel electricity is expensive you will find very efficiant small heaters. 5000 btu is normally the lower range.
