I've just got back from the CT scan, the other side of the jaw is there!!! I'm going to try and remove it now, stay tuned 😀 Check out my patreon channel for more adventures and behind the scenes! www.patreon.com/mamlambo
@MamlamboFossils awesome connection. Not many institutions do community outreach with such pricey machinery so good on them. The citizen science bump has to be crazy.
So glad you found that fossil when you did. I don't think it would have lasted out in the tide break much longer in that soft mud. Can't wait for the next video now that the CT scan has been done. Very excited for sure! Stay safe.
Great find, and great timing too because it wouldn't have survived for very much longer. It must be nice to do a relatively quiet extraction without all the dust and rock chips. I look forward to seeing what the scan reveals and the finished skull.
Oh boy! Anxiously awaiting scan results! Man. You really lucked out! To find a specimen of that calibre, in tact, in soft mud! It was meant to be! We are all as excited as you! Good Luck! 👍🇺🇸
May have missed it being live but hey, it is still the number one video when I update RUclips, so I will see that as a sign. Also Morne, would you say working with a fossil in soft matrix is easier then in more solid matrix? I love the videos so much honestly, they are always incredible! I hope the skull will survive the flip!
Nice find! What is the approximate age of the sediment that you found the specimen in and are you going to jacket the exposed bone side before flipping?
I wonder if you could use a temporary, dissolvable glue to create a lattice on the visible face so you can work it on the other side. In 3D printing, i sometimes make super thin (vase mode) features on purpose, and use ear cleaning sticks and glue to support them because it allows me to do a strong shape in a fraction of the time it would take to make it with internal structure.
Thank you so much for the heads up!!! You are a gentleman sir! 😂😂When I saw the two jaws I thought Barracuda and then you put that up!! Is this your easiest clean up? Have a great weekend.👍👍😉
Can't wait to see how this turns out. With such a soft matrix, do you have to completely remove the fossil or is there any way to stabilize the matrix?
Hey Mamlambo What are you using in that squirty bottle to dissolve the matrix? We have similar sorta matrix in Taranaki and I sometimes have trouble getting all the sandy mudstone .
Wonderful specimen, what a great find. Can't wait to see it when it's done and you can identify what fish it actually is. It's huge, whatever it is. Now, let's talk about the music. I'm not sure how I felt about it in this setting. That's definitely a power tool type of music & it seems to me that if you're doing straight hand tool work the music should be a bit more, I don't know......plunky I guess. Like heavy rain on good, thick sheet metal accompanied by some sort of a woodwind. Definitely not the steel drum casino heist dance mix.
Great channel. One question, am new to fossils and fossil hunting. I watched a video where you took 5mths to reveal a penguin skeleton on a huge pebble. It was completely encased in hard rock. How has this fossil skull found itself to be situated in soft mud? Is this where it was fossilized? Or was it at some point encased in some other hard rock? Thanks. to anyone who can answer this.

WOW, what a find!.
How do you get so much stuff ct scanned... speaking as a researcher that stuff is expensive asf?
@adameliezer4723 it's part of their community outreach and they work with Canterbury Museum who let me tag along 😀

I have a combination of wow, lots of oooooo's and fossil envy 😊.... you must be absolutely over the moon with that find, can't wait for the reveal ❤

I couldn't believe it when it came out so good!
What a find, wow! Congratulations!
I was amazed by the size. Thanks for sharing you fine touch that recovers the past. 😊❤
Sir this is going to be awesome looking I can't wait to see it finished thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
What an amazing find man, those teeth are beautiful
Great find. I look forward to seeing it cleaned.
I love your choices of music.
I bloody love this channel !
🦕🦖🦀🦞🦐
Yay!!! Thanks!!!
Same, I bloody actually love it too!
Can’t wait to see it!
Great find!!
Awesome! Yeah Barracuda is the direction my brain went before you said it. Look forward to seeing more!
I think Mamlambo meant Barracouta, which is a species extant in NZ and other countries. Barracuda are a different species, that prefer warmer waters.
@@Entoloma1 yeah you're right - bad habit. I don't think I know anyone that fishes in NZ that uses the correct name...

Amazing work ❤❤❤
Can't wait to see the scan!!!
Absolutely awesome fossil! and what a dream come true with that soft matrix.
Whaaaahhh !
I hope it will stick together !
It did!!!
@@MamlamboFossils Yoohoooohhh !
Thank you brother for the information ❤
wow what a find!!
Woooo great piece man, he who seeks finds!, that one has a soft womb be careful with him hehe. Great channel of yours, greetings from Spain
What a great find!
Awesome find!
Wow how exciting 😊 can't wait for update x
That's so cool! What a lucky find!

I've been trying exactly that!!! Thin sheets of 3d print which I melt with a hot air gun and then b72 over the top
Exciting!
Thank you so much for the heads up!!! You are a gentleman sir! 😂😂When I saw the two jaws I thought Barracuda and then you put that up!! Is this your easiest clean up? Have a great weekend.👍👍😉
It's sooo easy but way more fragile!
Wow what an exciting find. Looking forward to the update. How old approximately is the shale it was found in.
This is so cool!
That's a lotta jaw, fantastic find sir
Pure awesomeness
Very cool find
well done you,,, it would have been gone with the next tide... cant wait to see it, oxoxoxoxo🐨🐨🦘🦘
How exciting!
What a find! V Cool
Complimenti per il tuo nuovo ritrovamento e grazie per il video... alla prossima
Amazing find! Any idea of how old it is?
Super interesting as always. How would you go about consolidating something like that considering the softness of the matrix?
B72 and lots of it!!! I'm drying a small section then adding b72
Can't wait to see how this turns out. With such a soft matrix, do you have to completely remove the fossil or is there any way to stabilize the matrix?
Would matrix that soft come off with a firm bristle toothbrush, possibly, with less chance of chipping!
I'm not touching the bone and it seems to be coming away nicely, good suggestion though!
So far, so good
Hey Mamlambo
What are you using in that squirty bottle to dissolve the matrix?
We have similar sorta matrix in Taranaki and I sometimes have trouble getting all the sandy mudstone .
That was just water, it washed away the mud. This was a super soft matrix
Fascinating!
Almost looks like you could just wash it clean!
Wow, what a find! So do you know if this would be a Pleistocene or Holocene fossil? Can't wait to see the next installment.
Pleistocene or Pliocene I would say
Could you use something like a water pik to remove all of that since it’s so soft? Or would it mess things up?
It could work but it's not difficult to remove atm

Is the mineralization of the bone the same as when fossils are formed within stone? How soft are the fossils compared to the mud?
Hi Mr MamlamboFossils, I am passing through Pegasus in the next few days and wondered if your showroom would be open?
Amazing
Have you ever found a fossil that you had to wrap with plaster bandages to transport?
I didn't find one but helped out with the dig, it was a moa

Awesome. Officially jealous.
How will you secure it since it’s in mud?
Is there such thing as a ocean pike?
Very wonderful good luck
Nice😮
Does it have any skin patterns ?
Maybe you should go back to the beach where you found this and dig around and see if the body is near.
Nice find! I too am wondering about its age.
I'd estimate between 2 and 6 million
@@MamlamboFossils very cool 😎
Every update, a new adrenaline rush.
I hope the flip works out 🤣
do you have any idea how old it is ?
It's quite young, Pleistocene or Pliocene
How much would you estimate it's worth?
It doesn't have a monetary value
How is the bone aspect?did he start a fossilized process,or its more like a brown stain modern fish bones?
These are fossil bones
❤
very cool ,lucky you, but becarefull it may bite . I wonder if it has a dental plan :) you all have a good day
🤣
