Finding a large fossil skull with teeth

  • I happened across this skull late in the afternoon and knew I had to come back and rescue it when I had the proper tools. It's roughly 4 million years old and would have been a very large animal. The retrieval took about 2 hours in freezing rain but it is well worth it!

      My brother climbing K2 in the 80s forgot they had set up a camera ,lent from the BBC as part of a film competition , to record a long shot. Fortunately or not the weather turned bad forcing them back, so they had an excuse.

    Hey there, I worked with the University of Otago paleo team that extracted the large fossil shark you showed in one of your recent videos (which is quite a story in itself). I found your channel recently and have enjoyed the videos. Anyhow, I just wanted to suggest that for these softish rocks, and even up to medium hard rocks like limestone, you could consider investing in a rock saw - basically a chainsaw with a rock cutting blade on it. That would allow you to cut a double outline of cuts around the block and then you can chisel those sections out super fast. It would speed your extraction process up hugely because you’d only have to hand-dig the pedestal undercut and then pop the block off like you did here. You can see some footage of the saws we used like this in the videos of the Moa footprints being extracted from the Kyeburn River bed down south (which I wasn’t involved with). I hope that’s helpful!

      I thought it's illegal in NZ to use power tools when fossicking?

    • @nzmaximus
      @nzmaximus 18 дней назад

      @@inyenzi6378 I know this would apply to precious metals (and also permitted fossicking areas for those), but I'm not aware of any legislation around fossil collecting and power tools. As part of the university team, we used chainsaws (with rock blades), pneumatic tools run from an air compressor, and petrol-driven jack hammers to collect, and over the course of nearly a decade, I can't recall any discussion about any special permission being required for that. Private landowners permission was always required, and in rare instances where specimens were being collected from DOC land, permission from DOC (which usually limited the quantity of collection by weight). If there is any legislation around this, I would be very interested to see it.
      We did talk about fossils being protected from export under the Protected Objects Act or Antiquities Act, and also the potential for the government to acquire fossils of national interest from private collections under those acts.
      Additionally, the use of a chainsaw would generally do less damage to the neighbouring rock than a geology hammer, and also means the risk of damaging the fossil being collected is reduced.
