right? I don't see any use to pay in games unless you want to support the game. However, It gets tiring when the game is just, full on pay to win. If I enjoy it though, I play it regardless :)
I agree, I actually get turned off from games that are over crowded with whales, there are aspects of games I enjoy where you can get items from watching ads. Over the years its only gotten harder to be a free to play player!
Yeah skill matters the most. THE BEST FEELING is that when the enemy says your noob then, the tryharding kicks in and you destroy them and make then eat their words and laugh in chat
Mod enjoyer & only whale a game that I want to support here. I'd rather to cheat than to pay a game that I don't wish to pay tbh. Coz there are a lot of ways to gain an item without paying and without banned. Which is some mods that you can do it easy & low profile. Still the highest spending I've ever done is at genshin tho, by 3000$ (but it's all a good pay for me, considering that genshin saved my life for sucidie attempt) P.s: blame kokomi for my 3000$ spending 🤣
this is why i think paid games are generally better than f2p games, you're just going to buy it once and then play for pure enjoyment, while the f2p ones are mostly just cash grabbing games where it's almost predatory.
What sucks though is that paid games have started adding pay features. I remember the first ones (for me) being in like CoD black ops 3 where they started adding new weapons in loot boxes. That sucked.
@@farrelramandha7949 Yet still the majority of the assassin's creed odyssey franchise does not have microtransactions If I were to give examples I'd generally lean towards the non-AAA games. While a decent number of modern paid AAA games have microtransactions, however having microtransactions on a paid non-AAA game is almost unheard of. Also, just so this is clear in case this were to come up as well, mobile games work a little differently when compared to the rest of the game industry.
Step 1: Become a content creator. Step 2: Stream your gambling habit online. Step 3: Expense your loot boxes purchases as Business expenses. Step 4: Profit. That's how you do it kids. Gamble with tax-payer's money.
This is 100% true! If you have ever played mmorpg in SEA or ASIA server you'll get it. Some might say whales spend 1-3k USD in the game but I can assure you (also met some) real whales spend a MINIMUM of $10,000. They play the game for roughly 3-5 months, get tired of it then play another new mobile mmorpg then whale again.
lol theres now a similar mmorpg game that make you crypto money and gamble in the game. Such game is progressing, now your not only addicted pplaying it and whaling it, you might end up as a investor or a gambler maybe both
@@juliane5632 Some of those games are free to play but also play to earn (MIR4). The one that you are probably talking about is Axie Infinity and that is not just a game but is an NFT with some gaming aspects to it. The main thing on axie is earning, not the gameplay.
You literally don't have to pay on these types of games. Just have patience. Most of them are just either, hard to obtain (Paying makes it easier) or it's just a skin (Literally a virtual cosmetic). Paying once in a while is fine but don't let people get addicted
in maplestory its kinda you have to in later parts unless its reboot and even then if you dont ever get a event that gives you a free pet in reboot progressing is a chore especially for all collecting quest where you have to physicaly pick like 200 of 1 thing of the ground filled with stuff.
Cosmetics is like half of the reason why most of us play the game. I've played all the games in this video a lot and paid for cosmetics etc for years it's a huge deal lol These games make most of their money from cosmetics for a reason
@@twisterrrrr Cap xD, Depends on what game or what's your interest. Skins don't get me hooked on a game. The game does it. Skins are just some additional features 😩
@@kuromaki6226 There are also games like Genshin Impact and Cookie Run where you rely on getting certain characters with in-game/actually buyable currencies to make your team more powerful? It's easier to enjoy the game with better characters + yes skins/appearance help to if you make them pretty ofc everyone wants them.. quite the rabbit hole tbh
@@froggy6078 Games like genshin making teams more powerful, However those aren't really required as it's a PvE and you don't need that strong of a character to win the game. It's not that hard really unless you don't have that patience Note : I played gacha games for 6 years by now from old line rangers, Honkai day 1, genshin day 1 as well all for free xD
I play genshin and other gacha games. And yes we do gamble in this game like in genshin where we have 50/50. but honestly gacha games has taught me another thing as an F2p budgeting and saving.
Yea don't whale on gacha games it ain't worth it. Also those people at Mihoyo earned enough in the first 2 weeks to recoup development expenses so be f2p all you want.
I balance between f2p & paying accounts so here's my tips: 1. Count how much of the premium currency you need to spend to get the character you want 2. Convert the premium currency into real money, you will be surprised how much is spent to get just that reward you desire at full cost 3. Check if the real money is above your budget, more often then not some of these rewards will return at a later date so you could skip it for now & save up for when it comes back 4. If the cost cannot be defined as a certain number then my advice is to try the 3rd market, a fixed price is always better than recklessly spending
This tbh. I've been playing gacha for years now and i never spent more than 100$ in a game, just need some self control or be broke like me XD. Unless you're the collector type then you can't get every sh*t without spending a dime
That's why I'm f2p in Genshin, I have most of the event 5 stars since I've started playing in may (I don't have Klee or Ayaka) but I save and it works. No need to waste money.
same, classic, whatever little trinkets they give every month is saved , whatever items that could only be bought with premium currency is for simpletons true gamers play on hard mode, no iap, just grind
Yeah and also learning how to enjoy the game the f2p way. Games like genshin has so much lore and things you can do without the best characters or weapons. You can spend a good deal on it and have a lot of fun without speeding through it.
I know right.. this video is too bias without in-depth research on each game.. Genshin although is gachs base but the content is absolutely beautiful and stunning.. plus they give player guaranteed pulled after a certain amount of pull being made.. hence there is a cap to the amount the player is spending for a certain character.. I could have easily get the character that I want for free but just to support the developer hard works.. I would spend $5 on their Welkins once in awhile..
Behind those games exist employees who work hard to bring us quality entertainment. It's just gacha games have different business model than conventional games. Genshin is the most lenient gacha games and it still has guarantee over payment, unlike other gacha which are totally random.

Lol, I used to hoard games from steam sales because it's cheap and not even play it. Now I only buy game on sale if I plan to play it immediately, save me heaps of money.
Steam sales is fine, bought SP games like horizon zero dawn and you gain all access up to 100 hours of game time. Gacha on the another hand is just garbage.
man...back during my time, the gacha I play is really physical gacha.... puting 50cent into the gacha machine to obtain a capsule transformer toy..... the rare drop of these toys was a stealth bomber transformer.... I always burn my 50cent savings to obtain that toy......(which I never got...my friend got it instead =( ..) Also those 20cent card dispenser..... Ultraman cards, dragonball cards lmao.... time sure have change so drastically...
that's the real gacha, you pay for what you get. basically the reward has same value, just seems different for every person self preference. While these days "gacha" which is actually loot box gamble named as gacha, you are NOT paying for what you get, your money can be wasted for some cheap garbage or a slim chance to get a jackpot, that's basically gambling.
Omg! You reminded me of picking all the rare cards and brag infront of my friends about how lucky i was to have them. Now im looking back... I guess children need more attention and care.
Genshin is one of the more forgiving ones since there is a pity system, there is an increased chance to get a 5 star character after the 75th wish and a guaranteed chance at the 90th. This means there's a maximum you can spend before getting what you want.
@@natan380 In fact, most games with the gacha mechanic don't have one. FGO and Cookie Run Kingdom are popular examples. A lot of the well known gacha games have one, but most of the ones that aren't known as gacha games but still contain the gacha/lootbox mechanic don't.
A lot of gacha games do have a pity system due to Japanese law now Genshin isn't too forgiving because its currency is so expensive. On average, each 5* costs a few hundred dollars. You can be f2p to an extent, but there is a limited amount of primogems as dailies and spiral abyss do not give enough to sustain wishing on new characters.
well, gambling is powered by the 7 deadly sins.. 1st pride: bragging skins, costumes, damage and how strong you are. 2nd greed: you want it, you get it, coz you can. 3rd lust: almost same as greed you feel good at having skins or collecting or the characters 4th envy: you're longing for what others have 5th gluttony: you just feed into your addiction 6th wrath: getting angry for not dealing enough damage or not good enough on game 7th sloth: bored farming material or grinding for sets in game this is why i see many people falling for it. there's to many reason to trigger gambling addiction.
lol i quit this game, because it suck up my valuable time i tried to grind as hard as i can but it seems like the game just want money i'm a competitive gamer(E-sport), paying to win is not for me

I did this once, but its because the dude is 26 or something while I was 15. I realised that the relationship is not right, im underage and hes like, just one year off from being literally ten years older than me. Since he bought me a lot of stuffs and most of them cant be traded back because its bound to the player, I offered to stop playing and gave my account to him. Years later I logged in again as an adult and I find out he didnt take my account. 🤷 Edit : No, this is not romantic. I was too childish back then, I was being toxic to him, and I was so ashamed, coupled with me feeling very wrong about our age difference, I ended it all.
For my opinion, i called this "The Dark Ages of Gaming". Why, cause games this present doesn't see you based on your skills and ability on playing the games, but instead, see you on how much money that you spend, which they called "dedication", and divide the Players on two sides, F2P and P2W, which for me, games now are not as challenging as before and for me, it easy to get bored.
The first time i spent money on a game (like an extra item, not like a game itself) I was like 18 and it was one of those rythm games and my favorite song was behind a paywall so for the first time i asked my parents for their card and payed them in cash, like a month later the app straight up disappeared from app store forever and I'm still bitter about it
The best kind of feeling is when you are a f2p player and you get the skins that you want, with all the fragments/tickets you saved up and just brag to your friends
I have played countless Gachas, haven’t spent a single cent and am still able to compete with paying players. It’s all luck, you spending money and you not spending doesn’t make a difference Also, gacha rates have not been touched. Some games have just outright bad rates to the point where it’s almost impossible to pull them.
I completely agree with you. I been playing honkai since 2019(account created in 2018) and I'm doing well competitively. u can literally be completely free to play and still able to hit top ranks
@@blankshorto true, just study more on the game mechanism, usually, even low-rank unit can score reasonably well, maybe it can‘t one-shot but it sure does the job. Unless the game is all about the stat and stat are related to premium currency only, then run as far as you can.
Compared to games like Love Live and Bandori, I’d say that Genshin has the best gacha rates I have ever seen, especially the Pity system, in Love Live and Bandori you only get a limited step-up before the character gets added to long list of characters in the standard gacha rates which decreases your chances of getting your favorite card, in Genshin you get guarantees
@@DEEZ_N4T I seen better rates in other games tbh, I myself play honkai and honestly the rates there are better than genshin. there isn't a 50/50 for characters so the rate up character is always guaranteed. but yea genshin definitely has better rates than other games like u said, adding on fgo which I heard there isn't a guarantee system
6:25 For adults who play gacha games- Genshin Impact offers primos through in-game events to do wishes for characters. You just need to save it all up and not get tempted to collect every darn character since you get guaranteed character at 180 wishes. So plan ahead! Especially since they offer character re-runs every few months. And you don’t even need these characters to clear all the in game content. It’s called having the patience to resist temptation and not fall into traps lol bruh. This guy has absolutely no self-control, I guess. Also, surprised how they didn’t cover gacha games with worse rates like Dragon Raja.
exactly, you put it really well. genshin is definitely not as bad as gacha games because there is a guarantee (the pity system) and you can be f2p and have a few 5 stars if you do the events and save primos for the banners you want. they also don't do gacha for separate parts in a set like some other games (meaning you would have to roll for multiple things to collect the full set). might be because that kind of gacha is illegal in japan and genshin is quite big in japan. plus genshin is genuinely just a good game, you can definitely enjoy all the content with just the starter team/free to play characters. they give all the great content (graphics, story, etc) for free already
Genshin even offered us a 5 dollar monthly subscription, a bargain that won't even hurt people's finance so that we won't overspend. It's not the game most of the time, it's also the person's discipline.
yes exactly! it still baffles me how a high quality game like genshin is totally free and also incredibly f2p friendly. obviously you can't be f2p and expect to get every character but that's not even necessary, it's just hilarious how people seriously complain about genshin giving them a gambling addiction. just say you have no self-control at this point!

This is something non gamers can never be related. The feeling of getting something cool and flashy is totally satisfying. Especially in RPG game. And before you noticed, you ended up spending almost 1000$.
Those with not enough self-control while having a stable income should NOT come anywhere near these games! If you can restrain yourself, here's a free game. If you can't, here's a game that just dangles carrot sticks in front of you. Honestly, it's tough to find a middle ground even if you have the self-control 'cause in the end... You are paying them with your own time. Be it through grinding, daily logins, event participation, etc. If it ever feels like you are just checking in, step back and ask yourself if you are even playing the game anymore.
This is a good issue to touch on. The fact that they brought in National Council on Problem Gambling is an eye opener. I like as well what the counselor said: Parents shouldn't say "Stop this!" etc. Understanding the game that the kids are involved in, understand the reasons would help more.
Weird to see so many naive people in this comment section. Its a societal issue, they even say in this youtube video how it leads to gambling addiction. If you cant understand addiction and how it affects the brain, you're also part of the problem! Wild so many people are quick to defend these game companies that look at you no more than a $. Many game developers leave the industry over time due to the corruption and how money hungry these companies are! Literally look at the turn over rate for companies like EA, Blizzard, Riot Games etc. Sticking up for a game isnt defending the employees, its defending an industry that makes billions off of children, people with addiction, and so much more!!
9:41 She's right. Imagine getting your parents into Genshin and they get addicted to the gatcha as well so you be like : Understandable , have a day nice 🙃

A lot of those gamers are pretty young and I actually played all the games this video listed lol. They remind me when i was their age. My first memorable game was the arcade Street fighters 2 when I was 12 and I always need them quarters. Once I've learned the glitch with Guile invisible throw, I was unstoppable. I later moved onto the console gaming, pc gaming and now mobile gaming. PC gaming was the most memorable for me because I get to play my first 32 multiple players match call Team Fortess at a computer lab with the fastest connection. I think email and the world wide web was fairy new. Fast forward.. I'm on a quest to see how far I can push without spending a dime on mobile games. I'm like: "why spend the money knowing you'll quit one day and you can never take anything with you but regrets"? I know every games have an expire date and all end up getting repetitive doing the same daily quest everyday. The game developers already has your money and they'll always be laughing all the way to the bank. My way of supporting the dev is playing their game. That's the greatest honor imo. And finally, mobile games are vast and I believe nobody should stay with one game. I dare to say the same for marriage hence people had to cheat/divorced their spouse. / random 2 cents.
it's not a growing problem, the problem is already here for at least a decade... it started "small" and met negative response (paid small dlc) and then somehow people started accepting it and allowing more and more... Season passes came and people got conditioned to that as well... It came to a point where you get a stripped game and need to buy double base price for the game as intended with zero day dlc's and other "cut" ingame content... and it goes further and further... lootboxes and play-to-gamble... Need for speed was a very bad example with their car upgrade-cards for example. I'm glad the backlash was big enough that they will put that plan into a fridge for at least one and a half more years before trying to condition again :')

This video is hugely underrated. One of the players in the game I play (Hero Wars) spent $8000 in 5 minutes in loot boxes (while all teammates got 1/10 of what he got which was how I knew the amount he spent). Perhaps he is from a very wealthy family that do not really care about the money he spent, but it could be a deadly incentive for some people tried to compete with him (which not from wealthy family) This "Loot box" tactic is a "grey area" in online gaming that no many people want to talk about. Because for gamers, you got to taste of thrill of gambling with the game you are playing; For game developers, you could extract "unlimited" amount of money from the gamers. Seems like a "win-win" situation which really is NOT. The game developers just took advantage of benefiting from players with one the deadly human nature/sin that called "greed".
Many people don't talk about it because they know better. They can just find a game worth their time and salt, and just play that instead of being forced to spend on that game.
Very wealthy family teach the value of money... I am from one. If I spent unnecessary money i would have to work under my dad for minimum wage until I can pay it off while also contributing to rent and the electrical bill (30% and 8% of my wage would go to it) while at the same time being lectured why i just wasted the money. A lot of rich people in my age group (20 - 30) don't spend money unless they make money. Those who spend their rich parents money with no caution don't last very long in the family.
@@DjayTriple8 Very nice point. :) In addition, I think there could also be a possibility that the person I mentioned actually knows how to build wealth, but just decided to use a "tiny amount" (to most people are a lot of money) for "fun" (leisure activity). I love how one of them did used the term euphoria as this holds the easiest yet best definition of most players spending on loot boxes. That euphoric feeling you get is really relaxing and fulfilling, but not in a long term sense.

Jokes aside: why is this news make it like it's such a big deal? Not all people spend money on games and those games are still playable even if you don't spend anything in it. It's just an over exaggerating to say that lootboxes is a dangerous. Most people who play games are already work to get money anyway
The game developers need to be held accountable. They are creating a virtual casino and specifically targetting those with potential gambling addictions to spend way above their capabilities. Its basically a casino on your phone without the regulations surrounding it to protect these people with gambling addiction. This applies specifically to the 0.1%, but it is this 0.1% that the developers are actually targetting. And this is dangerous, especially on minors. As a long time gamer, the rise of mobile games and lootboxes disgust me, especially with the tactics that are implemented.
I think they over exaggerate it to prove a point like how smoke weed, cigarettes, and drugs. I think this one is to cater to children since most adults already know how to budget. kids however is a different story
It's sad to see comments like this. When lootboxes were just becoming a thing, all there was was outrage and disgust about it. Now there's plenty of people saying "They're not that bad". It's confirmation that the standard has been successfully changed, people are now accepting what was previously unacceptable and these companies will continue to exploit that as much as they can. They rely on your exact mentality of acceptance to continually push the envelope to make previously unacceptable practices acceptable and have no regard for how said practices effect the end user, as long as it rakes in more cash.
it's gambling, pure and simple. I'm a gamer and i don't mind, but this scrutiny was LONG over due in Singapore, with many countries already looking at this legislatively 2 years ago.

Just treat it as an expensive lesson and move on. Usually such things need to be experienced by oneself, it's very hard to educate those that have not found themselves in that situation. Better to learn now than later.
Who are you kidding. Its implemented to maximize profit, and the companies love people without self-control.... As long as it is a topic of debate.....it means profit for them. So they will stall the debate to infinity if they can.
Sad part is that 10 to 20 year later the server goes out all your investment goes down the drain. Lol this why I going back to console and retro games playstyle. 20 year later my save files are still there. "Fun fact" old gams just work when you pop it in and no need to pay to get whatever your looking for.
Loot boxes is a gambling mechanism, regardless of any fancy explanations from game developers. Worst culprits are mobile games. This should be regulated if not totally banned
Trust me bruv Genshin aint anywhere near the worst out there. You got the pity system and a bunch of free primos, if you want a character if you just save for a few patches you can guarantee them. pvp gachas, FGO, e7, summoners war are all far worse. The only thing about Genshin that I'd say was bottom of the barrel scumfuckery was the weapon banner. They're finally tweaking it (though its still pretty much a scam to anyone outside of giga whales)
bruh genshin impact is a free game that is totally playable without spending any money on it. you get to enjoy amazing graphics and animation, a very intriguing story line, cool combat etc. for free. the games also rewards you with primos and you can get quite a lot of 5* if you just save a little bit, and it's not even necessary to have 5* characters to enjoy the game. if you squander your whole patrimony on it, it's you who have a gambling addiction not the game being blood sucking lmao
I used to be like Jen with Maplestory. But over time, the hard realization is that the happiness is short lived. With free to play they promote more spending than buying a game. I was lucky to get out of that vicious cycle of spending and to free myself from the mentality of free to play. I rather buy a full game. The only time I buy DLC is if I absolutely adore the game. I played thousand of hours on Fire Emblem Three Houses and got the DLC because of my enjoyment. I never buy DLC if it is not worth it aka Pokemon Sword and Shield. I think the only free game I played is Scrabble because no need to spend on that.
I can relate to this so much, during COVID I started playing a free mobile game and before I knew it I got so deep I had to pay just to be able to even compete. There was no winning it was always on and worst of all you could make a mistake and lose everything while you were offline. Accounts could be sold for the price of a small car. I tried to be f2p but couldn’t do anything at a certain point until I paid for in game resources. Eventually after so many friends quit I started playing wow classic and with a regular subscription fee found I saved so much money in the long run. I still have friends that play that mobile game and wind up buying accounts for thousands of dollars only to sink more money on them just to play.
I'm going through the same thing with a mobile game called Identity V- the skins in this game can go up to 300 USD if you do max pulls. I have sadly spent that amount because the game says it's "limited", which they are so you're more likely to be one of the few that have it. It makes me ashamed really....also ashamed to have spent so much on a mobile game. I think in total, I've spent 1k in over 1.5 years.
As a long-time gamer, I don't spend on gacha or loot items ingame using real money. I think the narrative needs to be a bit more balanced and we should not convolute gaming addiction and gambling addiction as they are two separate problems. Re: gambling, you can also argue that loot box addiction only affects the people who already have a propensity or the personality to gamble. Often the top 10-20% of hardcore spenders make up the bulk of a F2P or gacha game's revenue while everyone else plays little to no money. Not everyone is equally affected. The fact is we do not have data to prove games turn non-gamblers into gamblers. Only that it encourages gamblers to start gambling earlier. Educating young people EARLY about the temptations and dangers of "games of chance" so they are aware of their own vulnerabilities, instead of trying to over-regulate or embark on an impossible task to "block off all dangers" is key. If the root causes are not addressed, they may avoid loot boxes at 15 but still move on to 4D, Toto and casinos at 21.
The in game purchase i understand but the third party website is a bit over for me bc i only whale on genshin $200 at most for a character i want ; - ;
The most invest I ever had with a game was COC and i have never even spend any money before quiting it, nowdays my fav games are chess after watching queens gambit😂 which literally cost 0$ to play
As for me, I feel more satisfied when I got the item/character that I want without spend anything in the game. It also will be less painful if I lost 50/50 in the rate up.
I used to remember Maplestory Cosmetic was really dumb, you get to keep your accessory until 3 months later and lose it. Plus those who are meta type of people will always lose more money than gaining money.
I totally understand this, I don't play those games in this video but other mmorpg and some fashion game, I spent so much that I'm afraid to look at the purchase history, I try to limit it now but once in a while I just can't help it
i was never allowed any sort of bank account until recently so I was always a free 2 play player, and until now I still stand by the fact that you DONT need to pay games to get good stuff. Sure you can pay games to support them if you have the money for it, but if its just to try your chances to get some rare skin or cool aesthetic, especially with gacha systems, you can do it without paying, it just takes longer. so I would say paying for gachas aint exactly worth it.
yep this. i learned this the hard way cuz i spent $2,000 when i was young, because i didn’t know i was actually spending real money on a gacha game. now as i grow up it’s actually not bad being an f2p, it’s better for me at least to work for something i really wanna get instead of blowing my dad’s credit card the second time ;-;
In my day, you see more than two birds on a wire, and the whole school start betting in which one flies off first. Those were the days when Singapore had overhead powerlines and telephone wires. We even bet on the exact time the teacher will enter the class by betting on the closest five second blocks. We even bet on the number of times the teacher says particular words in a period. Boy, did we have fun gambling.
It feels good to watch even handed coverage on this topic. There was representation from the users, councilors, and developer, and it wasn't used as a hit piece to condemn any one party for the problem.
Great video CNA, now make a video on how this same thing happens in the stock market and the economy (you won't because an ultracapitalist society doesn't work without the irrational optimism of gamblers)
It comes down self refrain really. It is really hard to control the urge to gacha but it’s doable. Budgeting and saving is the key. Genshin is the first and only gacha game i played. I kept playing because i do like the gameplay (grinding and basic hack n slash) not really that much for the gacha. But i do spent around 65$ (2x welkin, 3x bp, and the first three cheapest crystal packs once) in the span of 6 months for ‘investment’, getting characters that i like in visual and playstyle + weapons. Because i know that i’ll keep playing genshin for a long time. But after my last crystal purchase, i won’t spend anymore because i already have the stuff i need to enjoy the game. For future characters that i want, i won’t spend any money and just pull using the free wishes. And if i don’t get them I’ll just let it slide. It’s just a game.
“Young young time dun understand value of money” no it was more of an addiction for me and overtime I personally realised that the game isn’t that good it’s just temporary add ons
Well as a Genshin Impact Player, I've already spent $6000 on the game ever since they open it Globaly but I still not forget to support my kids and have bonding with my wife but yeah, I'm a hard core gamer, I usually play Genshin while working in my office, my Wife dont know this yet cuz she'll kill me if she knew 😂, she's a practical person and I lover her side of that who is always Family first..
That's not addiction so its ok. As long as u arent forgoing your basic necessities and responsibilities, whatever u spend on is up to u. This video is trying to send a message talking about addiction where you spend all your life savings

P.s: blame kokomi for my 3000$ spending 🤣
this is why i think paid games are generally better than f2p games, you're just going to buy it once and then play for pure enjoyment, while the f2p ones are mostly just cash grabbing games where it's almost predatory.
What sucks though is that paid games have started adding pay features. I remember the first ones (for me) being in like CoD black ops 3 where they started adding new weapons in loot boxes. That sucked.
Most paid games also have microtransactions though, especially if it's an online game

Yea don't whale on gacha games it ain't worth it. Also those people at Mihoyo earned enough in the first 2 weeks to recoup development expenses so be f2p all you want.
I balance between f2p & paying accounts so here's my tips:
1. Count how much of the premium currency you need to spend to get the character you want
2. Convert the premium currency into real money, you will be surprised how much is spent to get just that reward you desire at full cost
3. Check if the real money is above your budget, more often then not some of these rewards will return at a later date so you could skip it for now & save up for when it comes back

Bruh that dude could've gotten ganyu for free if he saved.
I know right.. this video is too bias without in-depth research on each game.. that's the real gacha, you pay for what you get. basically the reward has same value, just seems different for every person self preference.
Unless you want constellation 6, then you are forced to pay up to 2000 USD.
Agree, im a high enough Genshin player to say free play is completely possible.
I can't really think of a gacha game that doesn't have some sort of pity system
@@natan380 In fact, most games with the gacha mechanic don't have one. FGO and Cookie Run Kingdom are popular examples. A lot of the well known gacha games have one, but most of the ones that aren't known as gacha games but still contain the gacha/lootbox mechanic don't.
A lot of gacha games do have a pity system due to Japanese law now
Genshin isn't too forgiving because its currency is so expensive.
3rd lust: almost same as greed you feel good at having skins or collecting or the characters
4th envy: you're longing for what others have
5th gluttony: you just feed into your addiction
6th wrath: getting angry for not dealing enough damage or not good enough on game
7th sloth: bored farming material or grinding for sets in game
this is why i see many people falling for it. there's to many reason to trigger gambling addiction.

Also, gacha rates have not been touched.
Yep, f2p just need to micro manage their resources to keep up with spenders, plan which unit to pull, save up resources as much as possible etc.
Also, surprised how they didn’t cover gacha games with worse rates like Dragon Raja.
exactly, you put it really well. genshin is definitely not as bad as gacha games because there is a guarantee (the pity system) and you can be f2p and have a few 5 stars if you do the events and save primos for the banners you want. they also don't do gacha for separate parts in a set like some other games (meaning you would have to roll for multiple things to collect the full set). might be because that kind of gacha is illegal in japan and genshin is quite big in japan.
plus genshin is genuinely just a good game, you can definitely enjoy all the content with just the starter team/free to play characters. they give all the great content (graphics, story, etc) for free already
agreed, but the problem is the people.....most of them have no self-control and blame on the system....
Genshin even offered us a 5 dollar monthly subscription, a bargain that won't even hurt people's finance so that we won't overspend. It's not the game most of the time, it's also the person's discipline.
yes exactly! it still baffles me how a high quality game like genshin is totally free and also incredibly f2p friendly. obviously you can't be f2p and expect to get every character but that's not even necessary, it's just hilarious how people seriously complain about genshin giving them a gambling addiction. just say you have no self-control at this point!
if they had any self control they wouldn't be on the show lol

Loot boxes are a form of gambling... and especially worse for people without adequate self-control or have that gambling streak in them...

Me playing this because I was curious then I like abyss mage for joke and waiting cocogoat to rerun because I have enough pity: sed 😥
I'm a mobile game developer myself. Yea, can't deny this is an easy money industry.
Money Laundry
Finally, we have a media company willing to do a report on this growing problem that no one wants to talk about
it's not a growing problem, the problem is already here for at least a decade... it started "small" and met negative response (paid small dlc) and then somehow people started accepting it and allowing more and more...
@@Raan03 The problem is still growing though, Genshin Impact's success has lead to avenues of more bigger AAA companies to recently reforming their marketing strategies with even more "live service" digital gambling formats
If the government doesn't ban this, at least makes it extremely regulated that it's cut the microtransaction values at fixed prices and extremely cheap or giving pity rate of it's gambling system to the point that it's just giving fixed prices
@@ohamatchhams the industry has been moving towards live service long before genshin.... Anyways I don't see why people single gaming out. What about these young people who spend thousands on newest iphones or uni students that buy luxury designer clothing and bags. We live in a capitalized world, there are draws for us to spend money everywhere you look. People will need to learn to manage their own resources regardless.
@@Zvroth did you just compared getting an actual physical stuff like Iphone or University fees to gambling for digital in-game items that worth practically nothing even when you sell your account.
@@kiattim2100 first of all when you buy the newest iPhone, you buying into the brand value and marketing, I.e. A lot of non-tangible value too. The fact is most people don't actually need the newest iPhone in their life at all. Also you might be surprised how well some of these digital goods hold in value. Couple years ago I sold all my dota2 items and got like $5000 in my steam account, more than I paid them for. Last but not least, you do realize that money and the whole economy is just a non-tangible human construct right. The money in your bank account could also very well depreciate in value, which is why people invest in properties gold etc. The fact is we live in a capitalized world and there are traps everywhere we go, everywhere we look. It's a little stupid to single out people who spend money on games when every one of us falls into the trap in some degrees. It's just that long standing industries and corporations have better control over our govt and our legislation so their interests are well protected and are no longer questioned by public.
I know a guy spent close to $100,000 bucks on Eve Online, 2 weeks later a hacker got his account and is now enjoying the $100k game account, he's loving it I hear LOL!
to be fair for games like genshin its perfectly doable to finish endgame as an f2p
Yeah it is. Perfectly f2p friendly although resource does get a bit scarce in late game. Spending is just additional stuff cos some ppl are impatient (it takes what, a year for a char to rerun)
@@kittenmimi5326 childe.

It used to be so simple and straight forward with plenty of variety, no such crap as lootboxes or timegating nagging screens nonsense, content is filled to the brim with yearly expansions aka 'dlc' with actual content and best of all you pay ONE time only ONE time to experience everything the game has to offer

Sadly f2p most likely couldnt fight the bosses they would like to fight. However one way the government can help to combat loot box gambling is to force game dev to release probability distribution of loot box. This may deter players from attempting to open loot box
Nope. That doesn't help at all. Maplestory just released the odds of tiering up your gear via Cubing. Maplers are still throwing their money despite knowing how pathetically low the percentage are.
@@NupplesRampage well since u play maplestory, u should know about the compensation event that was given by kms. It was required by law in korea to disclose any event that involves odds in game. So kms did a check and realise they fked up. Should there be no government intervention, people would have just happily cube/tier/roll inner ability for an expectation that would never occur. And also in gms marvel machine, they release the odds of getting bod etc. What abt maplesea? They did nt release anything as u can see in current gacha. At the first few gacha, people realise it is a scam cuz of the number of garbage that is in the gachapon. By releasing all the information, players are then able to make an informed information. Now of course there are whales out that and they have more than enough money to throw. But releasing information do help people who are emptying their pocket to play the game.
@@kaizen7195 I think the other guy means they should do more. Maybe like max lootboxes to receive an exact item. i.e. open 50 boxes, and you will definitely receive skin X if you didn't already. Kind of what Ubisoft has done with alpha packs in R6 siege.
Isn't this what the CN govt did, and also forced guarantee pity to be a thing there
Why don’t they just add a pity system. All the gachas I play have a pity system be in be bad or good
This video is hugely underrated.
Which could misleading people who still in the "rat race" to imitate the "spending" without consideration of the other perspectives (as you mentioned) and suffer the consequnces.
The worst part is... when the services close then your 'investments' are gone
I love how one of them did used the term euphoria as this holds the easiest yet best definition of most players spending on loot boxes. That euphoric feeling you get is really relaxing and fulfilling, but not in a long term sense.

Just like drugs.
I am very happy to see a video on this serious issue.

I think this one is to cater to children since most adults already know how to budget.
kids however is a different story
mmmm i smell an addict
They should have pick up on this when EA Star Wars Battlefront 2 was in the media...
@@Anon-cv7ru Exactly, and that game had Belgium banning lootboxes in 2019. Same year, a bill to ban lootboxes was tabled at the US senate (no progress).

"A way to show off"
Genshin impact player: "i'm gonna pretend i didn't see that one"
when I was a hardcore genshin player, i always buy the monthly pass and battle pass but after experiencing burn out, i become a casual player and stopped spending money in the game. maybe the key to not spending money is to not have too much attachment to the game
$10k on gacha... meanwhile I'm sad when I see my investments losing several hundred.
Different bro. Gacha u know the money for sure gone. Investment u hope to increase
Just treat it as an expensive lesson and move on. Usually such things need to be experienced by oneself, it's very hard to educate those that have not found themselves in that situation. Better to learn now than later.
The Loot box is the scourge of modern gaming
When i saw 'gamblers' and 'lootbox' on the title i was sure genshin is gonna be in here. And i wasn't wrong
You have to mention stamina based games also. Where they make you wait hours to progress any further or pay for more stamina.
funny how genshin is both. gacha and resin. truly fucked up system for a game that is so good otherwise.
@@reflectlight1368 to be fair you can use fragile resin and transient resin from the sirenatea pot

x50-100 pulls for guaranteed SSR unit seems fair until u realised developers are releasing new characters on weekly/bi-weekly basis :(
Who are you kidding. Its implemented to maximize profit, and the companies love people without self-control....
As long as it is a topic of debate.....it means profit for them. So they will stall the debate to infinity if they can.
Exactly.
Of course genshin impact on top of the list 😂
Most blood sucking game..
Never believe in Chinese games but I still play genshin tho..
Boy, you haven't played FGO. That thing got no pity system at all. Good fking luck with that.
They're finally tweaking it (though its still pretty much a scam to anyone outside of giga whales)
bruh genshin impact is a free game that is totally playable without spending any money on it. you get to enjoy amazing graphics and animation, a very intriguing story line, cool combat etc. for free. the games also rewards you with primos and you can get quite a lot of 5* if you just save a little bit, and it's not even necessary to have 5* characters to enjoy the game. if you squander your whole patrimony on it, it's you who have a gambling addiction not the game being blood sucking lmao
meh, Genshin isn't that bad, they're pretty generous with the BP, spiral abyss and commissions as a F2P
Fgo : am I joke to you
I used to be like Jen with Maplestory.
This is why I'm F2P in genshin.
I used to be but the welkin temptation is too strong. Still crystals are so expensive so i would not spend on that...
You still spend money on internet, food, and alot of time
@@valasador9439 so food is unnecessary now
MAPLESTORY ❤️ my entire childhood. That game is older than WoW.
The in game purchase i understand but the third party website is a bit over for me bc i only whale on genshin $200 at most for a character i want ; - ;
so many children proud of their f2p play, i also still remember when i was 12 y/o having all the time in the world to grind on games
Well grinding for a month to only c1 qiqi is still pain but yeah at least its free...
I used to remember Maplestory Cosmetic was really dumb, you get to keep your accessory until 3 months later and lose it. Plus those who are meta type of people will always lose more money than gaining money.
It's even worse now...but i still love that game
I totally understand this, I don't play those games in this video but other mmorpg and some fashion game, I spent so much that I'm afraid to look at the purchase history, I try to limit it now but once in a while I just can't help it
i was never allowed any sort of bank account until recently so I was always a free 2 play player, and until now I still stand by the fact that you DONT need to pay games to get good stuff. Sure you can pay games to support them if you have the money for it, but if its just to try your chances to get some rare skin or cool aesthetic, especially with gacha systems, you can do it without paying, it just takes longer. so I would say paying for gachas aint exactly worth it.
yep this. i learned this the hard way cuz i spent $2,000 when i was young, because i didn’t know i was actually spending real money on a gacha game. now as i grow up it’s actually not bad being an f2p, it’s better for me at least to work for something i really wanna get instead of blowing my dad’s credit card the second time ;-;
In my day, you see more than two birds on a wire, and the whole school start betting in which one flies off first.
What bothers me is that these companies and games could suddenly end. Everything that was invested would be lost.
Everyone is a f2p, free to play --> force to pay
Genshin is worth my money, gimme them husbandos and waifus
More like force to play
You're not forced to do anything. Those games are just like TCGs, lotteries or sports bets.
With 6000$ you could play dozens of games.
I live in Belgium, no loot boxes banned here, can still go crazy in hearthstone (1600 euro account already...)
