yea many in comments seem to conflate that the article is talking about kids and not adults. at first i fell into the trap too. it's funny how some parents dont check their bank statements. then again, £20 max (according to the article) a week isn't that much really.
Well I agree with the adult rating. Such things are stated in the ERSB rating system. Now you have to draw the line and define what exactly constitutes as gambling to give it that Adult rating. Keep in mind this wouldn't get rid of the other microtransactions that fall out of the gambling category that could be bought so another problem might persist.
What we need to do is to just straight up ban this shit and implement hefty fines if they don't comply. The more countries do this the more they'll get the message that inserting manipulative and exploitative monetisation schemes into people's entertainment is unacceptable greed.
I can believe it I struggled with micro transactions a lot kept getting fomo when there was a special item in the shop I just avoid games that push that now and my financial situation has improved massively
Same here but not just financially though, my mental health also improved. Some of these games just force you to play for the free paid-currency in hopes of spending lesser. The exploit of our fomo mentality actually puts us in a constant state of stress. Now, I am phobic to games like these. After all, I play games to relief stress.
GTA SA is safer than FIFA UT. And a FAR better game overall! At least GTA SA has no predatory microtransactions, no real paid gambling and you actually pay for a full and very well made game instead of a copy and paste game with just a different number

What happened to earning the loot you get through challenges and new game plus? Beating certain bosses or under certain criteria like beat the game in under this amount of time, beat the game without saving, beat the game on this difficulty, do this difficult task and get rewarded for your efforts. Not a glorified slot machine for a chance to get a thing you will forget about tmmr. Comparatively, the latter half has no story for your efforts. You spin the wheel until you get a thing you may or may not want, and sometimes pay money for the chance. When the prior gives you a grueling challenge to overcome that’ll have it’s hardships that remain in the player’s head and give a good personal experience to tell others. That item becomes infinitely better as it becomes a memento of that challenge you strategized and went through to overcome. The worth to me isn’t the cost in real money, but the effort taken to overcome a challenge or mission to gain that item. Sure that short high is rewarding but fleeting. Do yourself a favor and choose games more worth your time and money.
@Strawberry Kiys I disagree all the triple A+ titles these days practice these predatory practices, to the degree of EA? Def not, but lets not forget them offering ore-order exclusives, multiple versions of the game at different price points, DLC, and all have a cash store where at MININUM they sell skins/tokens/energy and usually in a lootbox.

You know what else is taking a back seat? The still-ongoing fact of Steam being a known health hazard for coming up to 14 months now, with close to 7 months of that time having been spent with the problem being actively made worse by the company having taken steps to prevent the use of the only safe workaround that was available. Still waiting on coverage of that one, btw.
the easiest way to track spending is to see the tactic for what it is and not spend. like the old saying "the house always wins" (casinos). well you can win, by not walking into one.
if its free to walk in paying nothing for freebies... how can they stay in business? because the odds favor the house in such a dramatic effect they can afford to. no, u get those after spent x amount of money and they want to keep u right where u are. the $ paying for freebies was fleeced from the flock.
@@tonyb7615 i guess it depends on the casino you go to. Of course you'd have to spend a bit before your eligible for those kind of rewards. As long as you don't over spend then it should be fine when if you lose because you could eat least get something to eat and drink
Never forget years 2012-2018 when loot boxes were completely out of control. They seem to be mostly on their way out now (at least in forms that can be purchased for real money) and I could not be happier.
This issue is quite simple: "Do not spend your money on something that you can't afford AND make sure to buy things which only costs a mere fraction of what you earn or save money for it." It applies to all and not just with gaming.
A person should know something is very wrong when they start telling huge lies to their friends to obtain money under false pretenses. I read a fiction story once where a man told his friend that he needed 15,000 to prevent his house from going into foreclosure. The truth was he was facing threats of bodily harm from the collections department of the local casino.
In Big W Stores in Australia, there are My Ultimate Team pockets hanging from every game shelf with $15 Playstation and Xbox top up cards. The stores can not remove them cause they are paid to advertise them.
There's literally a culture here of putting money on fifa that starts from an early age. Sadly is prompted by how the game mechanics work and you're kinda "forced" to in order to stay competitive online. I've seen people mentally conditioned to spend, not even being fully aware of what they're doing
I'm surprised people even spend, considering how boring the game is. Do the people who play this game are aware of how bad the reviews are for this game? I don't even understand why they buy it in the first place. Seriously, who advertises this shit to them?
@@unlimited8410 From what I've seen, children/teens actually like those sports games (NBA 2K, FIFA, NHL, etc). Also, they buy the games because they sometimes are invested in the actual sports and want to have the newest team or player switch or whatever. On top of that, some adults buy those games because they simply aren't informed about such issues or don't actually have intent on buying loot boxes or whatever. That's from my observation though.
I don't say this often, but myself I'm an addict at spending money on games with loot boxes, microtransaction or 'Grind-Fest' games. I decided to pull out the amount I have spent in War Thunder. War Thunder is a war game about tanks, aircraft and Ships from 1914 to 2020 with thousands of vehicles. Premiums or unlockables from playing. Every updates, which are about 2 months away from each others, bringing top tier vehicles that are more and more powerful, So every update you got to rush to unlock these new vehicles to have a fighting chance. *Or buy research points* . They sometime release incredibly overpowerful machine and sometime can take 3 updates (or more in certain case) to finally be fixed Or powercreeped by more powerful machine. Alot of players like myself who Loves historical vehicles will sometime be hyped on getting new vehicles they have known for years, And these can lead to impulsive buying. I have played this game since 2012, So I have bought many, many vehicles and premium times to keep myself on the top of the scoreboard. Mind you this number is from the official website, They have a purchase history and I checked, did the math. The game is on steam too and you can purchase stuff on there too and I did, But I can't be bothered to check on steam how much I have spent there, Don't need to since it's already a freaking huge number. *4685.90 USD* Jesus Christ. Games shouldn't be allowed to have microtransaction at all, Especially games that you purchase at full price, It's really dangerous. P.S, Before anyone ask, No, I'm not in any financial problems. I have a house that I can afford, Food (Too much actually) and afford to help others in need with my current work. I just wanted to say that because modern video games are dangerous when the CEOs of games company finds ways to exploit players.
My personal experience working at a casino tells me they are spending more than they think. I would talk with guests at the front desk ( I was an agent ) and they would tell me what they think they spent, after they left the casino hosts would often chime in explaining to me and other employees at the desk when no guests were around, anywhere from 2x to 5x more were spent than what the guest thought.
"This is a welcome step towards the right direction..." I disagree. The Fifa playtime feature is at best a glance towards the right direction. And that's all EA will do until the law otherwise compels them
As much as I want this shit to be more regulated, having a mature rating, adult rating, or "loot box" disclaimer isn't gonna do shit to sales. It could be mitigated a bit by store workers, but I'm sure places like Gamestop will send out notices discouraging employees from mentioning it because it'll hurt sales. Kids still get GTA, kids still get CoD, etc.
I was always aware of lootboxes and a lot of companies crappy business practices, but it still surprised the hell out of me when my friend told me how he spent 1k dollars on a mobile game when we were talking on my podcast. It's insane how something could take control over your mind and your wallet
I consider myself lucky that my 12-year-old nephew realizes what a scam MTX are, even in games that have MTX but no loot boxes like Fortnite. Meanwhile, my 12-year-old kid cousin agrees that _loot boxes_ are a scam (he recognizes that paying for a random _chance_ of getting what you want is a ripoff), but he keeps asking family members for MTX for games. (He's not allowed to spend his own money on MTX, so thank goodness his parents recognize that threat.)
One person went into debt another went into crime. So in other words loot boxes are literally as addicting as narcotics to some people, which means they need to be treated as such, or in other words either regulated or made illegal.
These are tactics actually taught in marketing courses of the top business schools. Goes way beyond loot boxes in video games. Companies strive to get people ("consumers") heavily addicted to their products and spending more and more than base price by default.
Gamers and game developers have a common enemy in this case, it's the management and higher ups that try to squeeze everything from us with as minimal effort as possible.
Comparing Hades or similar indie titles to AAA titles released every year, dropped by biggest devs in game industry (EA, Ubi, Activision...) doesn't make much sense. It's like comparing Grand Theft Auto to Retro City Rampage 486 etc...
@@override7486 So Yongyea's argument is these publishers insist on clinging to loot boxes to continue making money. Despite all of the backlash, the actual court activity they are facing, they refuse to have their loot boxes classified as gambling. And my point is copies sold can be enough. Or maybe no more duplicates. Something to change up what they currently have. Whatever money they are getting from this revenue is being undermined by the lawsuits.
I had this problem, simple fix: Write a note in your phone. Every time you get a paycheck, determine how much you’re going to spend and save and in the top box, put that number in a table. Two columns: label row 1: “Wallet” and in the second column write the amount of money you have to spend that isn’t in cash. Label row 2: “Weekly Starting” and after you add your new paycheck, to the wallet section, copy wallet to this row’s empty column. This way you know how much you’ve used this pay cycle. I also add an “amount added” row so I can further track how much I’m spending.
it's good I only played the old school games like ds and gba back when games were more creative and full experiences. if I can get a cheaper console game or what have you for 20$ I will always choose that over a virtual item that won't be worth it. 4:21 that's impossible that's what half these games are about
The game companies probably won't regulate themselves, I think one venue of onvestigation would be to call on the licensees: the NBA, FIFA, NFL etc, and to pester them with loot box questions in interviews, including the players, managers, club execs.
There's also the issue now that some games are released without microtransactions only for them to be added later as a way of artifically boosting critic scores, just look at the XP boost packs in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. So buying physical copy of a game for a child because it says on the case there are no lootboxes becomes meaningless if they're free to just put them in later.
As a parent and a gamer this trend of microtransactions is more than disturbing. I really think that the government needs to step in and regulate these predatory companies. They prey on the weak and underaged for their profits. Why cannot games just go back to the old model of £40-60 and that's it. A good game in the box and no added extras.
It technically will be a loot box, you stick your hand in and pull out whatever crusty mess is in there. Is it 3 week old chicken breast? Is it a fresh hot wing? Or is it scalding hot oil and chicken juice coating your fingers? Pay just 4.99 to find out.
My nephew stole money from family members in his home for gaming, even stole from his younger sister. Had his xbox taken away from him and took sometime before he got it back, even gaming on his phone is restricted.
Hate to be that guy, but unless they controlled for outside factors, it's far more likely that that's due to student debt than anything else. On that note, education could use some socialization. (And that being said, Lootboxing is still some BS, but let's not throw statistics out the window just to prove that.) EDIT: Also 611 is WAY too small a sample size to externally apply conclusions in this case.
I play FUT 21 myself and honestly the worst part (and the most retarded part) is that the shit you can buy with money (packs) have a fucking high chance to not even net you ONE good card. You can literally spend up to 30,- an even 60,- or more on invisible shit and nothing nice gets pulled. No high stat player or in form player. Nothing. You're literally throwing away money. This is something that has boggled my mind so long regarding FUT. There are literally tons of great players in the game and even more if you count inform cards. EA is so terrified you might get even ONE good card from spending all that cash that they made their premium card packs hold
it's what Jim Sterling and other's said for years now... most AAA-Games ( for a while now ) are not designed for the current and last generation of gamers but to growth the next gen into addicted spender.
Hate or love him What he say is still true "most AAA-Games ( for a while now ) are not designed for the current and last generation of gamers but to growth the next gen into addicted spender."

What happened to earning the loot you get through challenges and new game plus? Not a glorified slot machine for a chance to get a thing you will forget about tmmr.
Comparatively, the latter half has no story for your efforts. You spin the wheel until you get a thing you may or may not want, and sometimes pay money for the chance. When the prior gives you a grueling challenge to overcome that’ll have it’s hardships that remain in the player’s head and give a good personal experience to tell others. I had this problem, simple fix:
Write a note in your phone.
Or just do monthly cards that's what I do.
it's good I only played the old school games like ds and gba back when games were more creative and full experiences. if I can get a cheaper console game or what have you for 20$ I will always choose that over a virtual item that won't be worth it.
