Pizza is delivered to the Marines of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion as they prepare for the imminent invasion of Iraq. This moment, drawn from Evan Wright's firsthand accounts in his book, highlights the bizarre and often absurd aspects of military life. Amidst the seriousness and tension of their impending mission, the delivery of something as mundane as pizza serves to humanize the soldiers, illustrating their craving for normalcy and simple comforts.
This scene underscores the surreal juxtaposition of civilian conveniences with the harsh realities of war, providing a brief, almost comical respite in the midst of their rigorous preparations.

The commander is a great example of why you NEED to give a warning order right after receiving the mission as part of the troop leading procedures. It gives your subordinates maximum time to do their own planning, and helps prevent you being a garbage leader. 1/3 of planning time is for you, 2/3s of it are for your people. Don’t sit on important information that your formation needs for survival and mission success. Another side effect is that your people will hear about whatever info you’re not disseminating in a timely manner from their sister units anyways, as also seen here. This makes the smoke pit rumor mill go crazy, and heavily undermines trust and confidence in your ability to command compared to the other company/battery/troop commanders.

To be fair. They are delivering it to an active warzone, with an enemy that likes to make IED ambushes. It's expensive because they might not be able to make it back from the delivery ALIVE! Let alone on time.
Plus they likely had to send a plane with materials, and people who know how to make pizza, half way across the world, make the pizza in the closest NATO protected country, and then drive it though the middle east, to an active FOB.
Would you deliver some $240 pizzas if it meant you will have to drive it to an FOB through Iraq, and back? Most would say "that is not enough". But apparently not pizza hut... Guess they found the statistic of "more likely to get shot in Chicago then Iraq" and took it a bit too literally.

While all units are already prepping for the imminent invasion, his own unit has absolutely no clue what is going on and why the surge in activities. They only realize something is up due to an unusual mass delivery of pizza to the camp. Who knows what could have happened if there was nothing to indicate something big happening.
Hence when he told that the WARNOs have been issued, one commented that it was "nice of him to mention it". He was expected to come up with his own mission order and disseminate it to his unit ASAP as soon as the warno was issued. Not wait for his subordinates to question if a mission was up.

I served in Desert Storm. I still remember the bump in the excitement and tension level on the night the air war started and the last 48 hours before we crossed the Burms. Some of the rumors that fly around are wild , think about them today and they are funny AF.
We got cheeseburgers , onion rings and hot dogs before G Day.

Now that’s a leader there perfectly calm as everyone else is frantically preparing for war. He’s so calm under all the pressure that he’ll alert his troops the following day he’s not going to allow a 48hr warning to stop his pizza time. More leaders should take on this calm battle posture. Encino man will go down in almost as if in mythos like Hercules or even the great Achilles.

My former coworker was fresh out of high school in podunk small town USA, wanted a cruisy life, so he joined the marines during a decade of relative peacetime, so he can become an electrician. He was in basic training when they all met for..i guess noonday reveille or whatever they all do at that time as a camp or camp portion. Someone asked them all to pay clear attention to the next words out his mouth..very non descriptly he just said "we are now at war!" And then everyone was dismissed to do whatever theyre scheduled to do next typically. He didnt get any real details except through gossip and eventual communication with the outside. Just in the moment he mentally groaned "oh for fucks sake!" Wondering who the hell we could possibly be at war with and what happened. Mostly just frustrated his awesome plan really backfired. Instead of ease, he got shipped to Kuwait in i guess fall or spring of '01-'02

I think I must be getting old because LT Fick looks so young in this scene. (Yes, I know it's an actor obviously.) I didn't get over until 2007 but I remember parts of the invasion so clearly from when I was on AD. Most of us thought it would be over in a month or two like the Gulf War and we wouldn't get to go. Joke was on us!
