Owning a Dalmatian?? | What you need to know!

  • Owning a Dalmatian is fun and exciting but not easy. I made this video to help anyone who really wants to own a Dalmatian get a clue on what it will be like and how your life may change or may not change. First off, Dalmatians have an exuberant amount of ENERGY. They need to be walked for 30 minutes twice a day or go on one long 45 minute run. Second, they need to eat a special diet because they make urinary crystals called Urate crystals. And lastly, Dalmatians have a genetic issue of deafness. This means before you get your Dalmatian make sure the breeder has tested their hearing to make sure they are not fully deaf or if they are unilaterally deaf. I hope this information helps you in deciding whether you still want a Dalmatian or not. In my experience with owning Blue and Violet, I feel they are just like owning a hyper Labrador retriever. Blue and Violet are both so sweet, loving and kind dogs and I would recommend getting a Dalmatian if you want one! ~ Dr. Lindsay Butzer

My wife said only when I was out of the house (no front yard at all), Guy, our third Dally barked to warn of people walking nearby, like in 'protection mode', but only when she was by herself!
And my 4th and current, I had to train him to bark on command (handsignals), so later he'd let us know when the postman would come, 'cause he would often leave the front gate open afterwards.

Don't worry about what other people say of them, focus on yours and training them as you want them to act. Some people say that they are not good with kids, they adjust to them if you have them in the family. Our first Dalmatian was jealous of my older brother when he was born (she liked being the 'only child'), but once he was eating solid food and throwing it to her from his high chair, decided that hanging around with kids wouldn't be so bad, (another source of food). Just make sure to give the Dalmatian some attention so it doesn't feel pushed to the side.
They are very loyal and will put themselves in danger to protect their family. You give them lots of love, and they will give you lots of love right back.
Burn off their extra energy by playing with them. Play wrestle, throw a ball, run with them in the yard, do what your dog likes to do. Have fun with them as they love to exercise and play hard.
Dalmatians are very intelligent and will try to trick you. They learn your habits and try to take advantage of them, mostly to con you into giving them more food. They can be stubborn sometimes, you have to be more stubborn than them to keep them in line. You set the limits and they will follow them. However, being so smart, they can learn anything that you want to train them to do.
They are fun and entertaining. They can be real clowns and make you laugh.
Here's a short video of when I trained/taught my Dalmatian to eat corn off the cob and leave the cob:

I grew up with Dalmatians. Amazing breed. Some people said they were super hard to train. That wasn’t my experience - they just need consistency and a strong Alpha. If they sense they can walk all over you, they will. They can also be stubborn and they get bored easily, so you need to mix up your training methods.

Thank you for bringing up the issue of stones. Not a lot of potential or new owners are aware of this issue so will plan on keeping them on a regular diet, then have problems and very expensive treatment to follow. For anyone interested, the specialized diet is more expensive but in the long run will save you money from vet bills and your dog a lot of unnecessary pain.

  • @amyadams2995
    @amyadams2995 2 года назад +6

Another good thing to help prevent stones, a reverse osmosis water filtration system to weed out the minerals. A prescription diet is also very important, as she has said. My Dal has had bladder surgery, so we have been extremely careful. Fun fact- human and Dalmatians urinary systems are so alike, that urologists study only Dalmatians as far as canines.

She is extremely smart and learned in no time at all and better behaved than many other dogs around. Her goal is to please and is definitely a “Velcro dog” but that’s not a bad thing, I always know exactly where she is! Shedding is something to be aware of but they are extremely clean and never have that “doggy” smell. She is also very protective but I believe she has been mistreated in her past, sorry that people don’t learn about animals instead of using sticks and spray water bottles, she will never need to worry about that life again. ,

Don't mind that negative comment. I have a Dalmatian (from a breeder) too! Unfortunately I got him at 16 weeks, because of laws here in Europe. So I totally missed his important learning curve and the breeders didn't teach him any basics. Nonetheless he is so sweet, funny, energetic and extremely smart. I'm spending quite some time on him to teach everything he missed but it's all worth it! Congratulations and have a great Christmas! You're going to loveeee it!

I took my car into be cleaned and it took the guy two hours extra to vacuum my car out. He asked me what kind of dog I had and said that he had never seen anything like it before in his life :) Oh and don't ever plan on wearing black again. I was aware of the Uric Acid Crystal problem before I got a Dalmatian, luckily there is a healthy breeding program trying to introduce the healthy Low Uric Acid gene into the pedigree population that do not suffer from these type of stones. Look into LUA Dalmatians as they are now bred around the world. My boy has qualified and attended Crufts twice now. There are many well bred pedigree Dalmatians now, some with Champion titles in various countries. LUA = low Uric acid, HUA = high Uric acid dalmatian

Every dog needs to have training and needs to be ran at least 5 days a week(Especially big ones like German Shephards). It's really messed up that lazy people get dogs and they sit at home dying of heat all day >.> or outside in a cage. Don't get a dog if you don't have the time or patience just get a cat.

We have had 6 Dalmatians and I have one that is deaf. He is not scared or skittish. Most of the time you can’t even tell he is deaf. I don’t think I would start out with the breed with a deaf one but I would get on other deaf one because he is the sweetest. Dalmatians are also very expensive to own. With their special diet, we have 2 on meds to prevent stones and just had a very expensive bladder surgery on our 1 year old male. But with all of that I could never see myself not having Dalmatians in our home! They are the sweetest most intelligent dogs I know!

I have owned Dalmatians for over 50 years, some of what you say is basic generalizations. Dals can be active, but well bred Dals after they get through their puppy stages when trained to be calm dogs, can be just that. They are more active before 2 years of age and yes, some are wild busy, but most are not. Stones and feeding. The issue is Purines in the protein in their diet. Good brands of chicken, turkey, salmon based diets especially ones with eggs as a protein booster are good diets. You do NOT need to fee high priced - high end diets to have a healthy Dal. Always remember that dilution is the solution. Which means, fresh water at all times and access to urinate often. Dals should never hold their urine during the day for more than 4 hours or at night for 8 hours. Deafness, again responsible breeders only breed BAER hearing tested dogs and have their puppies tested after 6 weeks of age for true results. After 50+ years I know Dals are the best breed!! They have so much to offer and are loyal to a fault! Some of their breed specific issues are really small compared to other breeds with much worse, life threatening health issues. Best advice is to find a breeder who does all health testing, who shows their dogs to compare them to the best and whos dogs are part of their family. May the best Spot enrich your life!!!

Why would a Dal be put on a "liver diet" if the urate stones are from the kidney? Dalmatians can have Copper Storage Disease and would need a low copper diet.
Question Dr. Lindsay: Why would a Dal not producing crystals or stones need a urinary diet when a low purine diet would do? Not all Dalmatians are stone formers, but they are fed a low purine diet in order to prevent stones. You could make recommendations on those since so many foods now have peas, liver, yeast, certain fish, etc. We cover their food in water and I recommend feeding at least twice a day. Sometimes a watery meal helps as well, especially during less hot months or for less active dogs, getting them to drink say a half cup extra using mashed scrabbled eggs, yogurt mixed in, or one spoonful of a cream of chicken soup.
You see stones in the urine when you walk a dog? You can't see little stones or sediment when a dog urinates on a walk. It needs to be screened. Urate stones show up on ultrasound as well.
I recommend going to the Dalmatian Club of America for resources and also the Facebook page, " Dalmatian Urinary Obstruction Resource," and look under "Files." Watch for post by Carroll Weiss, expert. I also recommend Dalmatian Copper Storage Disease Interest Group if there is concern regarding this.
    Daisy is too fat.
The sire and dam of the litter should be BAER tested and posted on OFA along with their hips, and thyroid or eyes, among other tests. I would request proof of a CHIC on the breeding pair if born in the USA. Just get the full registered name of the parents and type this in on the OFA . org website where it says " Look Up OFA Health Tested Dogs." The Dalmatian Club of America is still looking for gene markers on the Copper Storage Disease and Early Renal Onset Disease.
Deaf Dalmatians do not necessary have any more behavioral problems than any other dogs. They do not get scared. Scared of what? Just have a touch signal to awaken any deaf dog. Any person sleeping might jump if shaken awake suddenly. They are not hard to train if communication is there. In fact, it is an advantage to have a deaf dog in agility because they are less distracted. The top agility dog in Canada years ago was a Dalmatian named Holly. How about referring anyone with any deaf dog ( Dalmatians are by far not the only ones) to a group that assists like Deaf Dogs Rock or Deaf Dog Training. I recommend a vibration collar, smelly treats at the ready, and keep a few flashlights handy. I trained a deaf puppy 13 signals before she went to her owner.
Energy is high to average, and they do need a job to do. They were bred to go with horses; therefore, they are an ENDURANCE dog, not a hyper energetic dog. However, having a yard and playmates help a lot. Throwing a toy or ball helps. Some people are not able to do walks or run but good yard time, dog day care, or another dog to play with can be adequate. My Labradors had the same energy as my Dals.. My Dals relax and are calm. If the Dal is "hyper" I would blame genetics as they are a endurance breed and not a crazy bouncing off the wall energizer bunny after having adequate exercise. I would suggest a different bloodline.
I cannot recommend this video. I suggest talking to a DCA breeder, trainer, exhibitor, gathering more facts, having more resources, and offering referrals to expert information.
