@@GreatDaneCare I don't have one... don't want one...watched the entire video and enjoyed it.👍 And I feel much better prepared for the Dane I have no intention of getting😄
When mine was a pup we taught him to shake. As he grew big if he wanted to be the center of attention he would attempt to show his shake trick. He wound up punching people in the groin.
I much rather have them punch you in the groin (they don't mean to do it and mean to hurt you) than them jumping on you and knocking you down, which can lead to people getting hurt.
I had a black Great Dane, Damon, years ago. Used to take him to a small, unlit park behind my apt every night. One night, after he'd taken care of business, I headed back up some steps out of the park. Suddenly a man's voice asked me if my dog was friendly. It really startled me because I hadn't heard any sound of someone approaching...but I tried to remain calm and told him my dog was very gentle. (I was young, that wasn't my brightest move) I tried without success to see where this man was standing, but it was just too dark. As I continued slowly up the steps, Damon, pushed ahead of me and began a very low, rumbling growl. I'd never heard him growl, EVER. And that really set off my nerves. As I neared the top of the steps I could see a man in a dark track suit but still couldn't see his face. He was just standing at the top of the steps, as if waiting. I stopped as Damon continued to growl and remain in front of me. He suddenly bared his teeth at the guy and growled even more menacingly. The guy didn't say a word, but finally backed off and walked away into the night. I knew my dog had protected me from whatever very bad energy the guy had been giving off. But I had no idea my gentle giant would be protective of me, or that he could even get those slobbery jowls up far enough to bare his teeth...but I was so grateful for his protection that night.
Danes are extremely protective of their families. When I was a baby our Dane would always position himself between me and visitors he didn’t know well.
What a good dog! My dane absolutely loved everyone, and was very well socialized, but he did this once on a walk. I was walking in a wooded area with a twisted winding path. He stopped dead in his tracks, the hair on his neck stood straight up and he started to growl. We couldn’t see past the curve but he didn’t like whatever he was sensing. I thought I was about to come face to face with a wild animal. Pretty soon two young men came into view and I told them very loudly that they better make a wide path around us because if he went for them I couldn’t hold him, they listened. He was used to older teenage boys of all sorts coming to our house but he did NOT like these two. Always trust when a dog doesn’t like someone!
The Dane I had was very laid back, but very protective if I was really menaced, or he picked up on my anxiety. He would NEVER start a fight, but would always be prepared to finish one.
I had a 175 lb Blue...he was awesome! He would always lean on me when i was standing in one place. No matter where i went in the house, he was my shadow. He had to be touching me at all times...whether it was leaning, laying his head across my feet, or sitting on me, literally! They have no clue how big they are.
I always thought of the leaning as a hug without arms. I'll never forget watching The Walking Dead with Dozers head in my lap and the way he would hide it behind a pillow when it got scary.
Up until now I really thought my wife had the worst smelling farts in the world. I have since apologized because our Dane has the worst room clearing gasses ever.
My black female Great Dane actually learned to say "Hello." So she'd run up to people going "HERROO! HEROOO!" And then she'd wonder why they were running away like that, when she was trying to be so friendly.
@@rickpklassen It was! We began to notice their legs were a little gangly and their paws were a very big for their size but it didn't hit us until we walked into the vet and the tech said, "oh look at the danes". We originally wrote it off, until the vet came in and said "oh wow look at the danes" as well. We just started laughing 😂😂😂 Wouldn't trade them for the world though 🐶❤🐶💙
Im a tarantula owner and strangely I feel that. My first spooder (T vagans) was teeny tiny when I got her and got to be the largest spider Ive ever seen in like two molts. The realization "she will be much larger than that" was kind of a shock tbh
The bathroom watching is protecting you when your in a vulnerable state. That is why some dogs insist on maintaining eye contact when defecating - they want you to be on the lookout for danger
Cats also like to be with you while you're in there conducting business. Closing the door just creates meowing and pawing under the door to get in there with you.
Had a friend who had one since it was a puppy. 1. They don't realize how big they are. 2. When they pass gas, expect them to look at you with disgust as if you dealt it. 3. They gallop like horses. 4. I miss that crazy dog 😭
I was at a dog park. A Great Dane started Scooting back until his butt was on the bench, this displace another women and I. Once the Great Dane had his butt on the bench he looked like he was sitting on a throne. The Great Dane was between us. The lady and I looked at each other and laughed. I asked if he was hers, she thought he was mine and we laughter more. This Great Dane got a lot of pets from us that day.
My doberman did that. She would never sit like a regular dog. She would either lay down on the floor or sit on the couch like a person. Not sure how she learned that because I didnt teach her
I've had Great Danes for 45 years. You're right, can't help falling in love with these gentle giants. One thing you didn't mention is their adoration for children. My children grew up with them, they were playmates, best friends, and avid protectors. My daughter cut her teeth on my Dutchess ears, lol. My nephew had leukemia he passed at 4 yrs old. Duchess would not let him slide! Now I have Bentley that's the same age as my grand daughter, 2 yrs old. He's been with her their whole lives. He's her partner in crime, his mouth is her toy box. He's her pillow. He sits under her high chair and keeps the floor clean. I'm so blessed to have them both here with me.
I rescued Danes for about 30 years. It's very important to properly socialize them. You don't want a dog that size out of control. But I found that they were both easy to socialize and easy to train. I would add # 14 which is they are very approval seeking. They want to please you.
Thank you buster!! Our Dane was a rescue. We got him when he was a year and a half old. BEST dog in the world. If not for the rescues we'd have missed out on our lovely boy.
One thing I learned was to keep a duvet cover or blanket with me. If I have friends over and we sit outside my Lodewyk tends to 'wander around' which not everyone appreciates because of their side. He just doesn't know where to lie down. The moment I put that blanket down he straight away calms down and he stops pasing
@Thorgrim Grudgebearer I have an old english mastiff.... almost like living with a cat.... you have a better chance of calling a cat over than the OEM lol!!!
My heart broke into pieces the day we lost our Great Dane. It took me 5 years before I was ready for another one because I couldn’t imagine hurting like that again. They are the most loving dogs and you can’t help but love them in return. My last Dane exhibited every trait mentioned here. I have a brand new puppy and already so vocal and won’t let you out of his sight! Looking forward to many wonderful years with him ❤️
Great to hear you have a new pup,we are getting one end of january. We lost our amazing LOLA 2 years ago aged 11 and a half.Truly life changing animals🙂
My Buddy was 9.5 when he died earlier this year. I miss him SO much. We have 2 other dogs, boxer mixes, and they’re good dogs, but just not the same. Watching this video was bittersweet. I think I’m going to try and find one to rescue in January or February of next year. If I can’t find a rescue I’ll probably purchase one. Have never done that in my life but I will for a dane.
❤ oh my - her fear (back away - quickly) from the plastic grocery bag being blown down “her” 😳 She’s 10 years old now, and, as you said, her back leg and hip are starting to give her trouble 😢 BUT when she wants up to a piece of furniture she used to hop on … one of us is there lifting her small but heavy butt - now, I think she kind of waits for our “service” ❤️🤔
Every Dane I've ever had was obsessed with being tucked in for bed 😂😂 they wouldn't leave us alone until someone put a blanket on them for bed time lol
YES!!! Mine has her very own modified blanket that she must be tucked in with and her favorite chipmunk squeak toy. They are toddlers that never grow up.
Yup! Both of our Danes have to be tucked in at night. One wanted everything except her nose covered. Quincy here likes the covers piled around her but not all the way on. Then she tucks her nose in them.
My merle colored rosie girl did not want to go outside to do her business when it was raining. I would grab my umbrella and have to basically push her out the front door of my house!
Probably the American bred was . Being an 53 yr old American myself, I'm constantly saddened how many chitty breeders we have . Much in part due to the AKC who always puts size and coat before anything else . They used to "hate" working dog people like me , but now they infiltrated the working dog competition arena to get their complete "show line" dogs titled in Protection sports like Schutzhund. I've seen and trained around these dogs who shouldn't ever been trained Protection work let alone pass and get a title . Like so many things in America, if you got the money , you'll get your title , temperament be damned . It's so bad now I see Labrador's that are easily mistaken for Mastiff's bc they are so yuge , even worse I've seen Labs who don't like water. Total mess man
I've only owned small dogs, but my experience with a Great Dane was when one came visiting to our rural home. The 4 foot fence that works fine for my dogs was no barrier at all to our visitor. He hopped right over it and sweetly greeted us and just ignored my dogs who were beside themselves and barking their heads off. He had such a kindly nature. We knew he wasn't a stray because he was clean and well fed; later we learned where he lived and that he had escaped from home for a bit. I've never forgotten how sweet he was.
I’ve never loved anything like I love my Great Dane :). I cry looking at him sometimes just because of how much I adore him. He’s turned 7 this March 18th and he’s still healthy as the horse people mistake him for! He has every single trait mentioned. He farts every time he stretches, LOUDLY. He talks constantly and makes so many funny sounds, including a great Chewbacca impression. He’s not really afraid of anything, but he hates a lot of movement. We have pull-up bars and he’ll yell and nibble at whoever is on them. He also likes to gently grab hands in his mouth to play tug of war, and takes up the whole queen sized bed! I can’t imagine my life without him.
@@MrTr3sL3wis More like 7-9 years average life span. This might ease your "prebroke heart" . . . a few months back we had to put down our twelve and a half year old Dane, we tried to break my sister's Dane record of 13.2 years old!
We had a wonderful Great Dane who lived 12 years. He weighed 180#’s when he was two years old and the rest of his life. Don’t assume the short life span is a rule. Enjoy!
I married into the great dane (well actually Daniff) life. Logan is quite a bit bigger than his regular dane friends due to his English mastiff side. But what really bonded me even closer to Logan was his ability to tell I was pregnant 2 weeks before I knew. All of a sudden he would lay either on top of me or at my side at all times and follow me everywhere. He continually pushes his face into my belly and sniffs incessantly. He's a good dog. I still can't get over how he new 2 weeks before an early pregnancy test. Crazy!
@@GreatDaneCare Dogs can smell it, and not just Danes. So can I, sometimes. Standing in the hallways of Battalion HQ when at Fort Bragg, a group of men were in conference with a female Captain. The men were all doing "Deep Voice" and posturing, so my suspicions were already raised. After the impromptu conference, the men all departed their merry ways, and the Captain asked me, "Specialist Time Surfer, what is up with all these men going Cave Man?" "I have a suspicion, Ma'am, permission to approach?" "Granted, she says, looking at me funny. I step forward and sniff the nape of her neck. I step back, smile, and say, "Congratulations, Captain, you're pregnant." She's Immediately, "Please don't tease me, we've been trying for years." "Sick Call is still open, Ma'am, I suggest a Serum hCG test." Guess who got Surf and Turf at the Officer's Club that night, compliments of Captain and Major Expectant Parents? Just the other day I walked into my Chiropractor's office, stood there and took a deep breath, and asked, "OK, who's pregnant?" And the young lady sitting at the desk raised her hand. I said, something isn't right. May I smell you?" "Umm, OK. I guess." "Nope, you aren't the only one here." Doctor walks out, stands next to me, and calls her next patient. I look at her and say, "You're it." She says, "I'm what?" and the room erupts in laughter.
Our Great Dane was taught, by my wife, to give us her paw. Not a problem until our Dane decided that's what she will do to get anything she wants. She now walks around the house slapping whatever she wants, and the more you tell her no the faster it turns from a "slap" into a right hook from Mike Tyson. It's absolutely adorable.

im a 5'6" dog trainer and have been training a Dane for a few years now. I still believe that this breed is one of the smartest and most determined I have experienced :)
Yes.... curiosity. They like to get to the bottom of any issue that grabs their interest. Not great problem solvers and can get frustrated. Dane owners become to realize this and compensate. This and so much more.
Good to know. We're about to get a pup, after having a French Mastiff for 9 years who was MUCH smarter than we, or anyone else would have ever guessed. We literally *expected* a "doofus" dog, and she turned out to be sweet, sensitive, easily trained, and respectful dog. We had considered a Dane back when we choose her instead, so here we are again. :)
My family had a great Dane named shilo, he passed away a day ago. Literally the most fun a cool dog we ever had. He didn't like loud sounds. He would sit on our laps. He will be missed by us.
My niece had a great dane too, his name was ace, he literally would walk over back up and put his butt right in my lap. So I'm sitting on the rocking chair this big giant of a dog walks up backs up and just plops down in my lap and I'm like oh my God you're too heavy for this. Lol. Also we took my youngest niece down to see the dogs that my oldest niece had and so she's just standing there all of a sudden Ace comes with lumbering out and he's just as gentle giant, but she just sees this big dog running toward her and she went oh jesus! Took off running right around behind my dad. It was hilarious. Unfortunately Ace came up missing and we don't quite know where he is now but I miss him a lot. He was a big gentle giant.
Mine would wake herself up when she farted and look at me as if to say "was that me or you?". Other dogs shrink in size once you own a Dane. Trying to bath mine was a challenge, yet when I was in the bath, like clockwork 8 mins into a relaxing soak, she would open the door and jump in the bath with me. To say a Dane becomes your best friend doesn't come close to scratching the surface of your bond with them. I'm embarrassed to say, I've lost family members and the pain of losing them was nothing compared to losing my Dane. If you treat them as they should be treated, a Dane is so much more than a dog. Mine was my soul mate, a gift from God, 10 years after losing her, the pain is still there and I miss her so much.
@@taliehughes4341 Thank you for your kind words. Although it hurts, I know I'll see my baby again. I've only ever had 1 lucid dream, that was the night I lost my Elsa. We were in our local park, she was in the distance, saw me and came running. I realized she was gone and took control of the dream, we spent the whole time just sat together, enjoying each other's company.
@@mias7411 Don't be sorry, how we deal with pain and loss, helps shape and define a person. We choose whether we close down and isolate ourselves, or open our hearts and minds. When I took my Elsa on, she was left on a back garden to die, she was close to death from starvation and had been beaten so badly. From the day I took her, she was loved and cared for, she went from a broken soul to beautiful majestic angel. I wouldn't trade our time together for anything. I'm now at a point where I think I'm ready to take on another abandoned Dane.
One day my wife looked at him and said I Love You. He answered back and repeated my wife. Since then we can tell what mood he,s in when he answers. Sometimes real low ,other times real distinctly. Other times just half the words. It,s really hilarious. Doc, is eight years old now and the years flew by fast. He,s doing great and still a lot of fun along with a chocolate lab that,s the same age. Great Danes have a shorter life span and I dread when that day comes. He,s knows my soul . We,'ve had dogs all our 45 years of marriage. Every dog we had was great and loved. We,re up in age now so no more dogs or cats. Only because we wouldn't want to die and leave our pets behind. The worst thing that we hate the most in life ,is to have to put a pet down. It takes a very long time getting over it. Dogs are sinless. They go right to the Rainbow Bridge. When I pass away, I will want to go to the Bridge to see all my dogs & cats we,'ve had. I'll see my family & in-laws later on Lol. When I'm on the other side and searching , there better be and Rainbow Bridge there with all my pet's waiting for me , or I'm gonna kick somebody,s ass. 😊
I think one of the things we didn't realize before owning Danes was how goofy and silly they are. Sometimes it's very hard to take them seriously when they're afraid of their reflection or twisting themselves into pretzels. They always keep us laughing. They're the best.
They are hilarious. He makes us laugh daily. He is so goofy. We are always like ok so he is either really, really smart or really, really dumb. It is kind of hard to figure out which.
I was never warned about a dane walking up, backing up and sitting on ur knee like a child. The first time my boy did it, I laughed so hard I had an asthma attack. Then there's our talking, who can growl the loudest and longest, my baby is a rescue so he does have some special needs, but it's just part of life now and I'd never think about giving him up
5 danes later...i couldn't agree with you more about falling in love with the breed and wanting more and more. They are addictive. All dogs are special and wonderful but something about these guys is next level. Thanks for sharing that list. It's all true
My Aussie is the one of the nest thing that happened to our family! He is an awesome dog. We are very happy we saved him, And so is he, he shows it every five mins.
I miss my Buddy Boy. He was solid black with a white patch on his chest and back paw. He passed away years ago and was buried in his collar. I still have his leash hanging up in my closet, and when my mom tried to use it on our new dog, I yelled at her I was so upset. I miss you so much Buddy Boy, hell I'm crying writing this. I would tuck him into bed and slept beside him every night I loved him so much. RIP Buddy
Excellent video. One thing that surprised me in owning a Dane besides people's reactions to them, was the reaction from other dogs. Wherever we go, my Dane is constantly getting barked at. Sometimes in an aggressive way but, usually just excitement. Seeing a Great Dane is like seeing a unicorn, you don't see them very often.
I walked a friends Irish wolfhound and met a great dane, how rare is that? They played like they've never played before, probably cause they didn't have to hold back, hound looked like a homeless great dane 😂
I have had four Danes; they absolutely are the best breed. It is heartbreaking how many are abused, neglected and abandoned due to misinformation about the breed i.e. traits, personality etc. This is a great informative video about Danes.
@@sanfransiscokitty2471 It was the same for me. I didnt get a dog till the last year of middle school. She was a Maltese. She actually recently passed away. Now my dad has two other Maltese and I've got a Dane.
This was spot on. I currently have my third great Dane who is seven months old. A couple things that were missing was the Dane lean. They love to lean up against you. Another thing is the huge paws- They are so klutzy they try to affectionately touch you and basically knock you out. They are the sweetest most loving dog, and we always get comments on our danes when we take them out
We thought of a few other things: 1. Laundry sniffer. Never seen a dog breed happier tossing a basket of dirty laundry. 2. Creepy eyes. Droopy and open eyes while sleeping. Sometimes with tip of tongue out. 3. Butt up: sitting on step or couch with butt, and front feet on the floor or two steps down, but she still appears to be sitting straight up. Its hilarious. Dane owners since 2010.
The contorsion they perform when sleeping on their back so they look very broken. When mine gets hyper inside on a rainy day she literally goes full speed through the house while wall running. She isn't very good at suddenly changing direction though.
I lost my great dane, Cheese, a week ago and watching this video it has helped me so much! I miss my big baby so much! He was such an lovable dog and protective! By far the best dog I have ever had and this is the only dog I want again. Thank you so much!
The floppy ears are the best. My dane got named Gracie because of her ears. They were so long that as a puppy she would step on her ears and then go head over tail. It was so funny.
Yeah the tail for sure. Mine was a Dane mastiff mix so he had the Dane length with the thicker mastiff tail. Broke a window one time with it doing zoomie spins 🤦♂️
My friend had a Dane and you had to be careful and pay attention if you put your drink or anything on the coffee table. That tail would sweep it clean.
Our Dane would wrap her tail around her leg whenever she walked by children or babies. The rest of us got whipped, but she was so careful of little ones.
I had a great Dane as a teenager. When we got a kitten he mothered it constantly. My funny story though there are many is running a bath, switching off the taps and going to my room for my towels and PJs and returning the to see him in the bath, casually lay on his side trying to cram as much of himself in the water but there was a large enough part of his ribcage still above water and the cat was curled up there chilling like it was an ocean island. Obviously he wanted a bubble bath instead of his usual shower and looked at me unapologetically. How can you get even slightly mad at that?
The slobber! It looked like he had shoelaces hanging out of his mouth. I miss my Vader. He only made it to 7yrs. But he was so funny. He would sit on the sofa like a person. He also hated when things were out of place. like if there is a head of lettuce on my counter, it wasn't supposed to be there and he would growl at it. or a branch would fall on our shed in the backyard and he would growl at it with that deep bear sounding growl lol
Michelle Miller I didn’t realize they were droolers. It’s nice to hear that not all of them are. We had a mastiff, I was hoping for that same sweet personality without all of the drool, lol.
Mine also hates things out of place, once when she was little she found a dog poop in the grass (no no at my house) and barked so ferociously I thought we were under attack! Did the same to a bottle of laundry detergent on the kitchen counter! I have taught her not to sound the alarm now but she will still stare and huff till I put the offending object away! I don't know what I'm going to do without her, but I do cherish every second I get with her ❤️❤️❤️
One of the things that i was unprepared for was when he hit that puppy growth time when i would come home from work & he was noticeably larger than when i left 8 hours prior! As a 175lb adult, he loved small dogs...the smaller, the better. I was talking with a neighbor one afternoon, he had a very small, very old Yorkie. As we were talking away, i happened to look down and he had picked up the Yorkie in his mouth! I quickly realized he wasn’t trying to eat it...he was simply helping it onto a higher curb. Anytime someone had a very small dog in the big dog park area, it was a matter of time before Greyson was carrying the small dog around. Talk about some freaked out owners!
@@Nirrrina I grew up with a wonderful brindle Dane. We always had cats and sometimes new kittens. Our Jackie loved the babies and would “steal” one from time to time so she could bathe it. We would rescue the kitten so it wouldn’t drown! True gentle giant.
We also had a Great Dane, his name was Leo. He was the smartest and craziest dog I have ever seen :D He had the whole layout of my city in his head, but would never understand that he should not to take my slippers and chew them. Unfortunately he died from a heart attack when he was only 8 months old, but I will never forget him. My bestest boy ❤️
I’ve always wanted a Dane ever since I met a deaf Dane named Milo, I lived with Milo and his owner for 1 yr and during that time Milo and I got really close so close that he alerted me to lay down when I was going into a seizure. I miss him so much, wish I never moved out of state.
I’d like to add what I affectionately call “the Great Dane lean”. Every Dane I’ve owned or been around leans their body into you while standing. Whether it’s when you walk in the door from work, or just standing/sitting near them. They lean on you. If you try to push them away, they lean even more. It’s to the point I have to warn my friends not to get sandwiched between my two Danes, otherwise they’ll get crushed 😂
Ok, you need to add my favorite thing about Great Danes: they have a VOCABULARY! I will never forget the day I discovered this and proved it to my kids. They learn by repetition, so anything you say with consistent repetition whenever you are doing something, THEY WILL LEARN WHAT IT MEANS AND NEVER FORGET IT. Just a few examples of things that they will learn to find, go to or get into are: Truck Car Home Cabin Ride horses? (howl if they can't go) Goats Racoon Turkey Go for a walk? Let's go! Let's run! Slow down (first mile or so...ha) Horse trailer Wanna go swim? River (same effect as swim) Dance? --just the gesture of a left hand out as in doing a 2-step after 5 mins of training and Caesar would rise up to put a paw in your hand and the other on your shoulder...to the great surprise of guests who were inadvertently speaking with animated hand gestures, only to suddenly be looking upward into the eyes of of a 200lb house dog who is happy to accept their obvious offer to two-step! On the dark side...NEVER leave a perfectly set table with a beautifully smoked 25lb Thanksgiving turkey OR Prime Rib unattended! Similarly, don't be surprised (or fooled) by a Dane who appears to be sleeping soundly, to the point of even refusing to open his eyes when spoken to while on his proprietary dog bed BESIDE the couch he knows not to sit on, when he can hear you coming and the couch is CURIOUSLY WARM on a cold day!!! Big rascal. I am motivated to live a good life for many reasons...one of which is to see Caesar and Dutchess again! ❤️
There are phrases they understand completely too. I can ask my dane to go get her harness and leash and she will bring it. Or when walking, I ask are you all done? When she is pulling and I won't take another step until she gets it together. They really are clever and so intelligent. OMG, so funny you mentioned that my dane absolutely loves to dance.
We brought our 6mo and 4yo danes to Mardi Gras this year. We didn’t make it 5’ without being stopped each time. They had a blast being the center of attention.
This made me laugh and cry at the same time. Both of my Great Danes are gone now, but my harlequin, Patton, was a talker. My Barney was a comfort dog, who worked at our local cancer center. He made lots of folks smile, when they really wanted to cry. If I were younger I’d have another 1 or 2. Sadly, I can’t handle them anymore. Great Danes are really the best! ♥️
One of my favorite things about my Dane Iris, is when I’m sitting at the table ( we have a high table and chairs) is that when I’m at the table. My computer or something she will just come over and rest her head on my legs and just give me the most loving look ever. She’s my first Dane and I love her so so so much.
Crazy Dane lady here :) very relatable I have a 5 year old boy and had to keep one of his sons after breeding him Something I found out about Danes is how they are more human like than you think..I call them my broke roommates always have something to say and always late on rent
This is so true! I always say mine is more like having a wife than a dog, always telling me what's what and expects me to do whatever she wants RIGHT when she wants it! She's the biggest love bug in the world though, you can't even hold it against her ❤️
I think the "following into bathroom" thing is for protection. An animal is most vulnerable when "nature calls," so they stand guard of their humans. I heard cats do this as well
Back in the 1960’s, my Father, who was an electrician, was called out about some downed lines in a back yard. He proceeded to jump over the fence. He said he looked up, and saw a Great Dane charging at him. He said his leap back over the fence, would have made him a contender for the Olympics!!
I recently got a Great Dane puppy before Thanksgiving, and she’s just the sweetest little thing. She’s very intelligent, playful, and cuddly. She’s very social with people and other dogs, and she’s barely afraid of anything. I’m glad to find this video to help me understand some tips about Great Danes for my little Marley. ^^
Love this! A great list that helps define WHY we Great Dane owners are so crazy in love with our dogs! Regarding their enjoyment of drinking water, I've never had a dog who loved drinking water more from a gallon milk container! All activity stops and her attention is suddenly hyper-focused on 'The Jug' of water! Another common thing new owners become aware of is the LEANING! Danes LOVE to lean on people and if one is standing & not prepared, you'll be knocked off balance!
@@GreatDaneCare We leave the jug intact so its portable. She'll lick the top until we remove the cap and start pouring. Then she'll polish off 1/2 the content!
My Dane loved his toys, but he was terrified of them being in the toy box. My Dane was also scared of any cord or string on the floor - no fence needed for him - just put down a phone cord & he wouldn't cross it. My Dane also had no clue that he had hind legs. I lived on the ground floor of an apartment building & took him through the patio door on walks every day, but without fail, he would jump over the door frame with his front legs & SMACK his hind legs against it! Then, he'd look behind him as if he was horrified to realize that he's a DOG...with 4 legs!!!
My girl is very good with visual barriers. It doesn't matter if she can walk right over it, she instantly connects the barriers as do not cross. It could literally be a strip of cardboard 6 inches tall 😁
Owned a Great Dane Mantle (female) for the last 8 years….. if you have a generalized Anxiety Disorder or PTSD, one of the greatest animals I have owned for help through some of my disorder issues. My dane (Molly) has actually split her tail smacking it against the wall when she was a pup…. The other issue is kids around my pool. If we allow her outside, she does everything in her power to keep the kids out of the pool. It drives her crazy to have kids playing in the pool. She has worn the pads off her feet chasing and playing with the kids when in the pool … great video, I am hopefully adding my newest Blue Dane tomorrow…. I can’t wait, they are amazing family dogs.
That my friend is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL Dane! And you forgot the biggest most adorable puppy thing with Danes, their skin and coat are sooooo floppy ITS AMAZING!
I got my first Dane in 1984. 39 years ago. I’m on my 5th and 6th now. Once you love a Dane, you just can’t stop. One does better with a playmate. One by itself gets bored with nobody to play with. My male is 36” tall at the withers. He’s 2.5 yrs old. My female is 32” at the withers and she’s not even two years old so she’s still growing. The thing is, they don’t look big to me. When I’m out with my male, people start saying, “Look at that big dog.” I start looking around too, I want to see the big dog, not realizing it’s my dog. He looks even bigger because I’m only 5’0” and weigh 110. Danes are the best. I’ve loved and lost several. I get about 12 years out of one.
Hi! I am considering getting my first Dane, just went and visited with the litter today and fell in love with a little mantle boy! I have been dreaming of owning one since I was a kid. I was wondering, can you offer any advice for longer lives? To hear the average age for your babies has been 12 years is encouraging! I’m so excited, I think it’s worth the love regardless of how long I will have them, but just wondering if you have any tips.
That’s a good number. My last one lived 13 years. I was afraid to get one because everyone talked about their longevity being like 6 to 8 years. My Big girl passed in 2020 and I’m still heartbroken. I love the breed and will probably get another soon.
I LOVE danes, I've had them basically my whole life & I can't imagine life without one. Some things my danes have done in the past are: 1. A leaf fell in front of them & they freaked out. 2. When a new person came into the house one of my danes, I had 3 at the time, jumped up, put his paws around her shoulders, & actually started dancing with her. 3. One of my danes loved ice more than anything in the world, so whenever I went to the fridge to get water she went up & begged me for a piece of ice, that is until she learned how the ice dispenser worked, then she just did it herself... 4. I had just moved to a new house with 2 danes at the time & they were both very thirsty so I just turned on the kitchen faucet for them to drink out of. 5. I was dog-sitting for a friend's dane & she forgot to tell me that her dane was afraid of going down stairs. So I took her upstairs that night to let her sleep in bed with me & my dane that night only to wake up & find that she WILL NOT go down the stairs. So I had to carry a 160lbs great dane down a set of stairs, keep in mind that I only weighed 120lbs at the time. 6. I think one of the funniest moments of having a dane was when I was a teenager & my dane was sniffing his butt on my bed one night, when all of a sudden he farts & scares himself half to death! It was like he didn't realize what had just happened, I just started laughing like vrazy after that.
We adopted a dog with someone swearing to us that he was a pitbull lab mix but alas the dna test concluded that he is mostly great dane so we were very unprepared but these videos are great and are helping very much. All these things we have found are so true. Thank you from us and young Tobey
My Great Dane, Atticus, he let's me pee alone. However, he won't let me dry my hair alone. If I'm drying my hair, he has to have his fur blown dry too. He nudges me over and over, until I turn the blow-dryer on him. 😂😂😂 Everything else was spot on. The fart thing... My Dane eats tree bark. Grossest farts ever!!🤢🤮Totally trained my dog to go to the pen when he has stinky farts. Kinda shamed him into it by saying, "Oh my gosh! Did you fart? Gross!" If he did it, he'll run into the pen. It's hilarious.🤣🤣🤣
The 5 Danes I've had over the past 25 years.... But believe it or not I have a cat that weighs 11 pounds and let's out farts that almost make my wife barf!!! It's unreal!🤣🤣😭
@Tamara O. , come on, dear. He knows Mama loves him. I just told you: he eats tree bark, and that's why his farts are unbearably foul! He's not supposed to eat tree bark, and he knows it. Why shouldn't he be shamed for that ungodly smell? If my farts were as bad as his, I would deserve to be shamed, and I'd isolate myself. If you had a Dane, you'd know they're lap dogs. So half the time he farts, he's farting in my fricken mouth! A human adult would never do that to another human. Just saying. Dogs need boundaries. Atticus understands his stinky farts aren't welcome in Mama's lap.😝
Nikkisheers ...or in mama’s mouth! Lol! My Dane, Major’s flatulence were very audible. Sometimes soft and windy like a lower key on a pan-flute BUT OTHER TIMES loud as a foghorn!
Had one,he was a rescue pup of about two years, the only thing that would put me off getting another is they are soo short-lived. Mine lived for 10 years, which is a very old age for a Dane or any of the giant breeds.6to8 is average. As my vet described them as being like a Cadillac with a little Fiat engine for a heart.Just one to keep in mind too ,if you get one of these Apollos of the dog world.
I was standing at a dog park talking when I felt two paws on my back. When I turned my head to try to see, I received a lick from a Great Dane puppy. As I was removing the slobber I was laughing so hard. Love Great Danes.
Thank you so much for this video. The anniversary of my great dane's death is around the corner and this video made me so happy, reflecting on what it was like. He was my world and it tore my heart apart not seeing him there everyday. This video gave me a laugh. He would always talk back to my mom and they would have conversations back and forth. He was also always afraid of our little bunny too. And for the slobber, we used a towel and called it his, "jowl towel". The only breed I would ever want to own. Truly special. I hope you see this :)
We are getting ours February 12th.. I’m so excited! When I was a kid we had a neighbor who had 5 Danes. I always went over to play with them. I actually ended up knocking on doors in the neighborhood asking for donations for the local Dane rescue too. I’ve been dreaming for one, clearly 😂
Fantastic and so true! I’ve had Danes for decades and will never be without one. My current boy squeaks when he yawns. Our couch, bed and car is based on the Dane and we took the door off the downstairs bathroom and put up a bead curtain to stop hinges being popped. They have so much personality and with proper training are amazing family members! Thank you for sharing this, so many people only focus on size and there is so much more to these beauties.
Tip from someone with an English Mastiff service dog (very similar gut system in the breeds): Pumpkin! Pureed pumpkin **Not pumpkin PIE mix, just plain pumpkin** mixed into meals is amazing for the gas. You don't need a whole lot, either. I used about 2 Tbsps per meal for my 220 Lb working boy. Of course check with your vet first, but I had fantastic luck with it.
7:26 We have a large auto-water dish but my dane Lurch has decided that the bath tub is easier, maybe because it sits higher, so especially when we go to bed he'll go stand by the tub until I turn on the faucet and he'll just drink for like 3-5 minutes straight.
Mine stands in front of the sink and waits "for it to turn on", I'll notice I haven't seen her in ten minutes and come around the corner and she's just waiting on that damn sink! For all her smarts, she doesn't know tell me she wants water, she tells the sink!! 🤣🤣🤣
I too am a lifelong Dane lover and pack leader. I've grown up with them since an infant. I have been lucky enough to be sister to 7 different danes over the years, and now have 1 of my own. They truly are a unique breed and I wish more people would do their research before getting one. Thank you for sharing this info on your page. We are currently trying to rescue a few that have gone to bad people. Keep spreading that knowledge!
I had a boxer that lived to be 13. When he died I thought of getting another one but didn't because I felt like I was just trying to replace him. Then I saw a Dane on the dog whisperer and have wanted one ever since. This video may have made up my mind. That's a beautiful dog you've got.
I just recently got a great dane (puppy), and I never knew he (comet) could like not only playing in deep snow, but also burying both himself and his toys in the snow. I find that rather funny!
#2 absolutely true. As comfortable as they may be, whenever thier human stands up, they followed dutifully and then assumed another position of comfort. Every time. I never felt lonely.
@@GreatDaneCare my first dog was a great dane/labrador retriever mix... his tail was 2x the power and 3x the thickness. I have heard stories from 20 years ago(I am 14 and he died when I was an infant) that my cousin has told me about
@@lesleamaxwell1705 exept when they bite. My saint bernard great dane mix will bite anyone new he meets even if they are toddlers. He never leaves bad marks and He thinks he is protecting us, but its still bad. Even then, after showing his dominance, he is sweet to the new people. The great dane in my last reply went down fighting our aggressive dog who started the fight. They are sweet and think they are small, but they are huge and can really hurt someone.
When I was a kid through teenager we raised Danes. Being an only child they were almost like my siblings. I taught one to play hide and seek. Another was my sprinting buddy during my track days. I loved being greeted in the morning with joyous woo woos. When I was in college my favorite Dane Domino passed and I mourned him like a person. They are incredible.
I have a Great Dane mix and he's the sweetest boy. A lot of these mannerisms are 100% accurate, even for a mix. I would definitely consider getting another in the future. Great breed!
I'm glad I found this channel. I've been gifted a Harlequin Great Dane *currently 2mo old* and we're naming her Tasha. This channel is going to go a long way in helping me understand the breed as I'm used to SMALL dogs.
Your dog is beautiful! The richness of her coat is absolutely stunning. I've never seen that color before. We don't own a Great Dane but I love watching them. We follow a couple of Great Dane families on Facebook and RUclips. That's how I happened upon your YT channel.
Someone dumped a Dane while we were living in the boonies at the time. Found out he did NOT like men, likely because he had been abused or seen others abused by the previous male owner. My hubs earned his trust, but Duke (our 4 y/o named him) freely gave it to me & our 2 kids. He was the BEST dog we've ever owned. He was a fierce protector of our kids, but so goofy too. We taught him how to "speak" & "use an inside voice" for treats, which was hilarious. He was terrified of kittens! We lost him 2 yrs ago, & still feel his loss deeply. Our next dog will be another Dane, as we've already talked about it.
My friend has a four year old dane that developed "wobblers" he was dragging both back legs, seven weeks ago he went to the "supervet" to have his whole neck fused with plates that stopped the spinal cord being pinched, this was not a cheap operation,it cost £20,000,her insurance did not cover it,the only other thing she could have done is for him to be put to sleep. He is doing a lot better now,no more dragging his back legs,he is getting used to the fact that he can no longer move his neck to look around, but they just take things for what they are.Five more weeks before he is allowed to go for a walk,he is doing his best to get out so he is missing his walks.
They must be rich t be able to afford that kind of money, that kind of surgery isn't always successful and allot of th time they end up getting put down anyways.
@@raellskys4083 He has responded really well,he is getting stir crazy wanting to get out the door to go for a walk outside.he goes for his eight week scan on wednesday, four more weeks after that he will be allowed to start walking.everything is much better. No she is not rich, she is retired, this was money she had saved, the only other thing to do was this or put to sleep.
I lost two Danes to wobblers, they got when they were around 7 yrs old, vet said they were getting to old to do the operation safety, it was a gamble...it's horrible to watch your best friends deteriorate right in front of your eyes.
@@matthewroach3195 His started when he was two, noticed in the way he was walking, they decided not to do anything other than pain meds as he was very young. He went back when he was three for a scan to see how much worse it had got and they were pleased that it had stayed more or less the same, when he got to four it then started to get worse, dragging his back paws, wearing his toenails down so there was no nails left.He went for a scan yesterday, they are pleased with his neck but his heart is beating a bit fast, they are going to see him at the heart doctor on monday,it could have been the long operation time for it beating fast,we shall see monday
@@cheryldavison9759 very sorry to hear that... I know where you are at and what you are going through...no matter what happens, don't beat yourself up...you did everything you could. Hopefully he will be ok. Hardest part about having big dogs
I rescued my great Dane/mastiff at 15 most old...I am 64...he was being mistreated so I stepped in. I absolutely love him. He is not aggressive at all however adjusting to his strength and energy has been an interesting journey. Great job on your channel! The info you post is very helpful....peace from Kansas
My family doesn’t allow the big dogs on the couch or beds but all of our Great Danes would back up and sit on the couch. Front legs on floor backside firmly seated on the couch cushions. All of the 6 Great Danes my family had lived with did this. Another thing vets recommend to place their bowls up on a riser to make it easier for them to eat and drink. And it’s true they are infinitely patient with babies and young children
I used to have a great Dane black lab mix and he loved to sit on the couch and when we told him to get down he would just put his front legs down on the ground it's just something that you have to see to believe
Deff agree...one Danes always turns into another! And they really are just the sweetest and most full of personality breeds out there! I can’t imagine ever living my life without them now!💕💕
Do I have a Great Dane? No Did I just watch this whole video? Yes
Fantastic! But..did you like it? :)
I have 2 jackrussels lol never owned a big dog ever
Me too. I've never had one, but I've always loved 'em! So much character!
LynDen Barbo me too. Want one so much. But I couldn’t bear the short life span.
Haha I’ve seen groin and face shots when ppl bend down to shake their hand. No need to bend down to shake a Dane’s hand ppl! 🤣
6eneric User 😂
Love it! They are so funny!
I know this pain
I had a blue Merle Great Dane Samson
The Dane I had was very laid back, but very protective if I was really menaced, or he picked up on my anxiety. He would NEVER start a fight, but would always be prepared to finish one.
Dogs can actually sense bad people its so cool!
They are Leaners, about push you over leaning against you, and they don't seem to realize they are not really lap dogs
I had a 175 lb Blue...he was awesome! He would always lean on me when i was standing in one place. No matter where i went in the house, he was my shadow. He had to be touching me at all times...whether it was leaning, laying his head across my feet, or sitting on me, literally! They have no clue how big they are.
Jon Slagter all dogs can be lap dogs if you’re brave enough
Mine thought he was a fully fledged lapdog. 169 pounds on my lap was funny and crushing lol
LOL I was about to post this too
I always thought of the leaning as a hug without arms. I'll never forget watching The Walking Dead with Dozers head in my lap and the way he would hide it behind a pillow when it got scary.
“Great Danes fart a lot” sounds like he’s the perfect fit for my family
Up until now I really thought my wife had the worst smelling farts in the world. I have since apologized because our Dane has the worst room clearing gasses ever.
Everytime our great dane girl sits down, she farts. Every time. XD
@@seiyofiraraven2841 lmao. I’m sorry to hear that and very glad ours doesn’t do that.
Haha
Well they named her "Gass"
My black female Great Dane actually learned to say "Hello."
So she'd run up to people going "HERROO! HEROOO!"
And then she'd wonder why they were running away like that, when she was trying to be so friendly.
Literally dying reading this comment 🤣😂
DId you teach her?? Can i learn how to teach my boy??
This is probably why a Dane was selected to be scooby do
Liar
I’m crying this is so funny 😹
No one even told me they were Danes. I was told they were labradors when we got them as puppies... Boy was that a surprise 😂😂😂
that's amazing oh gosh I can't imagine the shock
@@rickpklassen It was! We began to notice their legs were a little gangly and their paws were a very big for their size but it didn't hit us until we walked into the vet and the tech said, "oh look at the danes". We originally wrote it off, until the vet came in and said "oh wow look at the danes" as well. We just started laughing 😂😂😂 Wouldn't trade them for the world though 🐶❤🐶💙
omg that is too funny😂😂
Deborah Feathers lol
Im a tarantula owner and strangely I feel that. My first spooder (T vagans) was teeny tiny when I got her and got to be the largest spider Ive ever seen in like two molts. The realization "she will be much larger than that" was kind of a shock tbh
The bathroom watching is protecting you when your in a vulnerable state. That is why some dogs insist on maintaining eye contact when defecating - they want you to be on the lookout for danger
LeopoldStotch I also thought it’s perfect level for to steal some pets while you’re sitting down to pee lol
this made me laugh its like the dog telepathically saying "watch my back dude"
Cats also like to be with you while you're in there conducting business. Closing the door just creates meowing and pawing under the door to get in there with you.
dogbarbill Thats definitely my cat.
True....
Had a friend who had one since it was a puppy.
1. They don't realize how big they are.
2. When they pass gas, expect them to look at you with disgust as if you dealt it.
3. They gallop like horses.
4. I miss that crazy dog 😭
Look up a camel running. 🐫That's more accurate
@@reina8301 Not in my personal experience but okay 😂

Seeing them through adolescence is a rewarding experience for all.
Not sure how she learned that because I didnt teach her
CeCe B: excellent story. Thanks for sharing - I am still laughing as I picture this in my head!
I was crouched down putting logs I. The wood stove and my Great Dane 6 month old pup backed up and sat down on my back
That's common with Danes. People shouldn't own danes if they don't have land/property
CeCe B this is literally the best thing that could’ve happened to me
I've had Great Danes for 45 years.
They do love the little ones!
So very true. Mine would keep her body between the railing of the stairs and the body of an active 3 yr old. They are so very attentive to children
Yes they do.
Jip, you have to go with, otherwise they won't go
Him: Great Danes love their humans and follow them everywhere, including the bathroom.
Me: so you essentially own a huge cat?
They do sleep a lot too 😲
M. S. True so true all my 5 cats need me to pet there he’s while I pee lol
I live with a cat and an OEM.... the OEM acts more like a cat than a dog.... the cat will come when called, not the OEM
Yes.
@Thorgrim Grudgebearer I have an old english mastiff.... almost like living with a cat.... you have a better chance of calling a cat over than the OEM lol!!!
This baby has one of the most fabulous coats I've ever seen! Like silk, satin and velvet all in one!
Yes! Her coat is stunning!
My first thought as well. Even the colour is unique. Wow.
Yessir silky and beautiful as well as the wiemeranrr
Yes gorgeous 😍
What do you feed your Dane? Her coat is beautiful! We have a gray Dane who looks so dull and sad. Help!
Deanna. Thankyou for sharing your story.
So glad you have a new puppy to love and cherish😊
My Buddy was 9.5 when he died earlier this year. I miss him SO much. We have 2 other dogs, boxer mixes, and they’re good dogs, but just not the same. Watching this video was bittersweet. I think I’m going to try and find one to rescue in January or February of next year. If I can’t find a rescue I’ll probably purchase one. Have never done that in my life but I will for a dane.
❤ oh my - her fear (back away - quickly) from the plastic grocery bag being blown down “her” 😳
She’s 10 years old now, and, as you said, her back leg and hip are starting to give her trouble 😢
BUT when she wants up to a piece of furniture she used to hop on … one of us is there lifting her small but heavy butt - now, I think she kind of waits for our “service” ❤️🤔
Real stuff. Losing your companion feels like losing a actual sibling or something similar 💔
Mine is like this! He’s only 2 months old but still he has his own special sleeping blanket
In their head they are your owners.
Mine too
The peeing in the rain is so accurate! The first year of having our Duke, my boyfriend had to go outside with him holding an umbrella!
Mine too!
My Great Dane’s name is Duke too
I love your picture, love them to bits.❤
Or if it is super cold, or snowing, or really any weather event other than clear warm but not hot weather they won’t even consider going out
My merle colored rosie girl did not want to go outside to do her business when it was raining. I would grab my umbrella and have to basically push her out the front door of my house!
So from the sounds of it, Scooby's being afraid of everything fits with the breed. Cool!
The more I spend time with my Dane the more Scooby Doo makes soooo much sense lol, Scooby is my favorite cartoon too 😂
😂😂😂
Total mess man
And his Clinginess to Shaggy as well
I've only owned small dogs, but my experience with a Great Dane was when one came visiting to our rural home.
Yeah, my Dane and her brother (who my brother has) and other Danes I dog sit will not jump a fence. They won't even step over a pile of clothes.
The Chewy sounds are hilarious!
"He farts every time he stretches"😂😂😂 lmao
Im glad to hear he's 7, I am about to get a 5 week old in April and once my wife said 4-6 years my heart prebroke
Crazy!
They just know!!
After the impromptu conference, the men all departed their merry ways, and the Captain asked me, "Specialist Time Surfer, what is up with all these men going Cave Man?"
"I have a suspicion, Ma'am, permission to approach?"
"Granted, she says, looking at me funny.
I step forward and sniff the nape of her neck. I step back, smile, and say, "Congratulations, Captain, you're pregnant."
She's Immediately, "Please don't tease me, we've been trying for years."
"Sick Call is still open, Ma'am, I suggest a Serum hCG test."
Guess who got Surf and Turf at the Officer's Club that night, compliments of Captain and Major Expectant Parents?
Just the other day I walked into my Chiropractor's office, stood there and took a deep breath, and asked, "OK, who's pregnant?"
And the young lady sitting at the desk raised her hand. I said, something isn't right. May I smell you?"
"Umm, OK. I guess."
"Nope, you aren't the only one here."
Doctor walks out, stands next to me, and calls her next patient.
I look at her and say, "You're it."
She says, "I'm what?" and the room erupts in laughter.
Bob Wilson Jr. 😂😂😂
Bob Wilson Jr. I don't teach my Great Danes to shake hands because they are so big. I'm afraid I'd get slapped by mistake. (Lol)

im a 5'6" dog trainer and have been training a Dane for a few years now.
You forgot to mention they're leaners! I find myself standing braced for the lean. I try to remember to warn folks who aren't familiar with them.
I’m 5’11” and not a dog trainer.
My family had a great Dane named shilo, he passed away a day ago. Literally the most fun a cool dog we ever had. He didn't like loud sounds. He would sit on our laps. He will be missed by us.
RIP Shilo
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss. Pets are family. something only pet owners know.
Mine was my soul mate, a gift from God, 10 years after losing her, the pain is still there and I miss her so much.
david wells what a great memory to keep, the dog jumping in the bath.
The way you describe your soul mate bought a tear to my eye
@@taliehughes4341 Thank you for your kind words. Although it hurts, I know I'll see my baby again. I've only ever had 1 lucid dream, that was the night I lost my Elsa. We were in our local park, she was in the distance, saw me and came running. I realized she was gone and took control of the dream, we spent the whole time just sat together, enjoying each other's company.
david wells I’m so sorry 😓
@@mias7411 Don't be sorry, how we deal with pain and loss, helps shape and define a person. We choose whether we close down and isolate ourselves, or open our hearts and minds. When I took my Elsa on, she was left on a back garden to die, she was close to death from starvation and had been beaten so badly. From the day I took her, she was loved and cared for, she went from a broken soul to beautiful majestic angel. I wouldn't trade our time together for anything. I'm now at a point where I think I'm ready to take on another abandoned Dane.
david wells amen to the first part 🙌🏻🙏🏻
When I pass away,
I will want to go to the Bridge to see all my dogs & cats we,'ve had.
I’m gonna get a Great Dane as a graduation gift to myself when I finish nursing school 💜
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it!!

Wherever we go, my Dane is constantly getting barked at. Sometimes in an aggressive way but, usually just excitement. Seeing a Great Dane

This was spot on. I currently have my third great Dane who is seven months old. A couple things that were missing was the Dane lean. They love to lean up against you. Another thing is the huge paws- They are so klutzy they try to affectionately touch you and basically knock you out. They are the sweetest most loving dog, and we always get comments on our danes when we take them out
Yes the lean !! Lol love it ! ❤
We thought of a few other things:
Yes! The sitting is so funny! ♡
Omg mine is a blue Great Dane so when he is outside he pauses and just stares literally he looks like a statue

I always love hearing all the things about other people's Danes. Make me happy to see we all experience the same thing
I love this breed and I'm glad to see you kept her ears natural
Gotta love the soft floppy ears!
The floppy ears are the best. My dane got named Gracie because of her ears. They were so long that as a puppy she would step on her ears and then go head over tail. It was so funny.
Soft, floppy ears are the best!
My vet advocates ear cropping for infection prevention. I've had both and I think the vet is right.
Yeah the tail for sure. Mine was a Dane mastiff mix so he had the Dane length with the thicker mastiff tail. Broke a window one time with it doing zoomie spins 🤦♂️
That’s some serious power!
My friend had a Dane and you had to be careful and pay attention if you put your drink or anything on the coffee table. That tail would sweep it clean.
@@coyoteken1000 oh yeah the tail sweep deadly to any glass or crockery
Our Dane would wrap her tail around her leg whenever she walked by children or babies. The rest of us got whipped, but she was so careful of little ones.
@@coyoteken1000 lmao that is too funny. I can picture white carpet and a Dane knocking down glasses of coffee and OJ
😂😂i can imagine this well
I have had Great Dane mothers of Kittens.
And Cat mothers of Great Dane Puppies.
It's all about whether you're "Family" or not.
The slobber! It looked like he had shoelaces hanging out of his mouth. I miss my Vader. He only made it to 7yrs. But he was so funny. He would sit on the sofa like a person. He also hated when things were out of place. like if there is a head of lettuce on my counter, it wasn't supposed to be there and he would growl at it. or a branch would fall on our shed in the backyard and he would growl at it with that deep bear sounding growl lol
mine has zero slobber, and rarely farts either.. must be shes a prima donna diva of danes lol
Michelle Miller I didn’t realize they were droolers. It’s nice to hear that not all of them are. We had a mastiff, I was hoping for that same sweet personality without all of the drool, lol.
RIP, Vader, you sound like you were a very good boy. (cat mama, pit mix auntie)
What a smart dog. Very helpful too.
@@Nirrrina I grew up with a wonderful brindle Dane. We always had cats and sometimes new kittens. Our Jackie loved the babies and would “steal” one from time to time so she could bathe it. We would rescue the kitten so it wouldn’t drown! True gentle giant.

No
Ok, you need to add my favorite thing about Great Danes: they have a VOCABULARY! I will never forget the day I discovered this and proved it to my kids. They learn by repetition, so anything you say with consistent repetition whenever you are doing something, THEY WILL LEARN WHAT IT MEANS AND NEVER FORGET IT. Just a few examples of things that they will learn to find, go to or get into are:
Truck
Car
Home
Cabin
Ride horses? (howl if they can't go)
Goats
Racoon
Turkey
Go for a walk?
Let's go!
Let's run!
Slow down (first mile or so...ha)
Horse trailer
Wanna go swim?
River (same effect as swim)
Dance?
I firmly believe Danes are more people than dog. I could put any food anywhere and my Danes wouldn't take it without permission.
I’ve lost multiple slabs of ribs, and 2 hams to my Danes 🤦🏾♀️
You have to add "Paprika" to the list: our Nomade knew the cat's name.
My 2 year old will not swim he can not stand to be in water above his ankles loves water unless he's in it.
We brought our 6mo and 4yo danes to Mardi Gras this year. We didn’t make it 5’ without being stopped each time. They had a blast being the center of attention.
They must’ve been in heaven!
That’s their way of saying “hi human, time for a break to come play with me” ☺️
Crazy Dane lady here :) very relatable I have a 5 year old boy and had to keep one of his sons after breeding him
Something I found out about Danes is how they are more human like than you think..I call them my broke roommates always have something to say and always late on rent
lol late / never
Lol :D. "Broke roommates" is so true, it hurts.
I heard cats do this as well
Wow, I didn't know that's what my cat was doing. That is so cool.
With great games I don't think it is for protection. Mine was scared of his own shadow and still followed me everywhere
She is laying there through the whole video so we'll. She's is beautiful!
Back in the 1960’s, my Father, who was an electrician, was called out about some downed lines in a back yard. He proceeded to jump over the fence. He said he looked up, and saw a Great Dane charging at him. He said his leap back over the fence, would have made him a contender for the Olympics!!
i would break the fence if i saw a great dane rushing me
I recently got a Great Dane puppy before Thanksgiving, and she’s just the sweetest little thing.
That’s so funny. Do you cut the top off but leave the handle so it’s easier to hold then?
@@GreatDaneCare We leave the jug intact so its portable. She'll lick the top until we remove the cap and start pouring. Then she'll polish off 1/2 the content!
Ahhh ok 👌
My Dane loved his toys, but he was terrified of them being in the toy box. My Dane was also scared of any cord or string on the floor - no fence needed for him - just put down a phone cord & he wouldn't cross it. My Dane also had no clue that he had hind legs. I lived on the ground floor of an apartment building & took him through the patio door on walks every day, but without fail, he would jump over the door frame with his front legs & SMACK his hind legs against it! Then, he'd look behind him as if he was horrified to realize that he's a DOG...with 4 legs!!!
Awww he sounds like he was an awesome pet💜💜💜
@@shareejl1 He was a love!
Yes our Great Dane would not step over charging cords.

My Great Dane St. Bernard mix lived 13 years, so lucky to have had him that long. Miss you Bruno.
How they run when they get zoomies! Our dane is so wonky when he runs and its hilarious.
I LOVE danes, I've had them basically my whole life & I can't imagine life without one.
Some things my danes have done in the past are:
My Dane thinks ice cubes are a special treat, lol
We adopted a dog with someone swearing to us that he was a pitbull lab mix but alas the dna test concluded that he is mostly great dane so we were very unprepared but these videos are great and are helping very much. All these things we have found are so true. Thank you from us and young Tobey
Same! I was told my rescue girl is Catahoula leopard but dna test said Daniff. Learning as much as I can and found myself here!

My grate dane is terrified of balloons, every time she sees one she barks at it. 🤣🤦🏼♀️
Nicole Rosendo oh my gosh, mine too!!!
My Great Dane hates small dogs one time I brought home a balloon dog and she barked and it popped
My Great Dane, Atticus, he let's me pee alone. However, he won't let me dry my hair alone. If I'm drying my hair, he has to have his fur blown dry too. He nudges me over and over, until I turn the blow-dryer on him. 😂😂😂
Everything else was spot on.
@@matthewroach3195 , Dying!🤣🤣🤣🤣💀👻🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Tamara O. , come on, dear.
@Tamara O. You need help.
You are so welcome and thank you for the heart warming comment!
Their size is the most obvious quality but it’s their personality that wins over our hearts ☺️
Yup, I’ve used puréed pumpkin with good success before as well
Plain yogurt also. I use Mountain Dairy which was recommended to me years ago when I got my first Dane.
Thanks for sharing and the kind words Mallory!
A Dane's tail is like a rubber hose filled with wet cement❣️ I so miss having a Dane around.
Minus those tail wacks!
@@GreatDaneCare my first dog was a great dane/labrador retriever mix... his tail was 2x the power and 3x the thickness. I have heard stories from 20 years ago(I am 14 and he died when I was an infant) that my cousin has told me about
Leslea Maxwell that is the perfect description for their tail!
@@michaelmiklacic9155 I learned to walk holding on to a Dane, absolutely the best dog for kids!
I just got my seventh Dane. It IS an addiction. I’ve had Danes for twenty three years and they truly are special. ❤
I feel ya'
I have a Great Dane mix and he's the sweetest boy. A lot of these mannerisms are 100% accurate, even for a mix. I would definitely consider getting another in the future. Great breed!
I'm glad I found this channel. I've been gifted a Harlequin Great Dane *currently 2mo old* and we're naming her Tasha. This channel is going to go a long way in helping me understand the breed as I'm used to SMALL dogs.
This is my Dream dog. I can’t wait to get one my self. I’m already in love with it.
They are truly great loving dogs. Our Charlie is just a goofy nut but we love him so much.
Your dog is beautiful! The richness of her coat is absolutely stunning. I've never seen that color before. We don't own a Great Dane but I love watching them. We follow a couple of Great Dane families on Facebook and RUclips. That's how I happened upon your YT channel.
Watching this , just warmed my heart immensely. Jasmine does all these things. Talks in many tones and follows me to bathroom all the time
Someone dumped a Dane while we were living in the boonies at the time.
@Bad Kitty Thank you, & I agree. Duke changed our lives, & was everything we didn't know we needed. 😘😘❤️❤️
The info you post is very helpful....peace from Kansas
lol My Great Dane's happy tail could clear a coffee table or leave a welt on you. I miss that guy every day.
Or break a nose!
I can’t imagine ever living my life without them now!💕💕
We're definitely on the same page here haha
