- The Doge transmission in 1998 is known for the governor pressure switch and solenoid failures causing alot of owners to be duped into a new transmission. Heres the how-to save alot of money for the do-it-yourselfer.
Thanks for posting this video! I replaced the governor pressure solenoid and sensor in my 1999 Ram 1500 and it solved my problem. It cost me ~$150 for the solenoid, sensor, gasket, filter and fluid. A LOT cheaper than a rebuilt transmission!
000
Damn why was it so hard to find a video of someone explaining this so well !
Thank you !
Love to see people taking care of their Dodge Rams awesome.
We on the brink of giving up on our american made junk pos truck!!!
Believe me!!!
Thank you so much. 96 Dodge 2500 ram. Trans 47re. Works great now! My trans didn’t want to shift so I rebuilt it, still didn’t shift, replaced those part and works just fine. Your a life savor.
I have a1998 Dodge Durango with the same exact build and color as your truck....same front end... same body other than your bed... because mine is an SUV. I am having the save problems with mine...and I knew that I was in the right direction with the solinoids. It's the save transmission and same problem...it was nice how you clearly and elaborately got to the point in under 5 mins! Excellent video! Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to video this fix. My truck was up shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and replacing the solenoid and sensor solved this problem. I would not have thought to do this if not for your video.
Thank you so much for showing this video. I was having the same problem with my 2001 and almost got rid of it because I thought the transmission was shot. I tried this out and it worked! Thank you again.
Check the cable that runs from the throttle body to the trans. to ensure its not sticking. It's the detent cable, responsible for downshift, the tighter the cable the quicker the downshift on acceleration.
Wow, my son just replaced his transmission a couple of months ago because it was doing the exact same thing! We replaced it with a salvage yard transmission for $600. I wish we would have come across your video sooner,,,,By the way great video I'm sure you save people plenty of cash with it. Thanks
well found both the sensors new on ebay for $105 shipped the cheapest I found the one solenoid was 98 so a deal once they come in ill give ya an update will change filter ..pan was full of nasty ... was pretty scared to do this til I seen this video thanks for your help !
Thanks for the video. Very very helpful. I replaced the solenoids, installed a drain plug in the pan, and adjusted one of my sloppy bands as you instructed. Tranny shifts perfectly now. Thanks man!
This was a good video to show these solenoids. I realize it's old, but there is a mod you can do to allow for better flow to the first solenoid you removed. You open up the channel around the screens with a 3/4" drill bit. As it's designed, the fluid can only get to a small section and if one of those screens gets partially clogged, it will diminish fluid flow. I read about it on the dodgetalk forums.
Not a good idea to get people to drill on their valve body , best to stick to simple repairs .
Or just change fluid and filter more often preventive maintenance goes along way
Hay man thank you for your video your southern accent was comforting. Did you switch out the filter while you were under there?@@2012nugget
@@badger_actual8249 Indeed I did.
I just did this to my 99 Dodge 1500 and it absolutely runs perfect now!!! Thanks!!
Thank you so very much . You gave me the confidence to tackle this job. Not to hard just messy. My Dodge Ram is shifting again. Thanks Dale
That's cool you showed about taking out the slack. Mine has more on one side than the other.about 1/8 slack will do .thanks.brake it down my friend... thanks again.. transmission can be a real pain.and I shut my mouth and open my ears never to old to learn ..... Billy
you know, I love your vids and the way you explain the process for a job. Please, keep them loading onto youtube!
My truck would have high rpms a lot through every shift. I did this procedure and improved the truck greatly. For $200 dollars total saved me from dropping the transmission for $1500. My Dodge has 165000 miles.
first of all thanks for the upload. I own a 99 dodge ram 4x4 5.9 360, the fluid is ruby red and doesn't smell burnt when I check it. I notice that I'm having a similar problem by what you stated in the beginning, only it high revs in 3rd gear close to 3000rpm and have to let off gas, then it will shift. Some days, no problems. I'm going to attempt this this weekend with those same parts. Fingers crossed. update soon.
Thank you so much for posting this video. my truck didnt want to go to 3rd but when it did it would jerk or rev up real quick then go to 4th. I was so afraid that I was going to be pulling another transmission. Thank you brother. I am definitely going to try this first!!
Thanks.. I had this problem a few years back, It would come and go, so I ignored it,, it cost me thousands to repair the damage. Dont ignore transmission problems. Nice Video.
OMG. Where do you live? I need to buy you dinner. This video saved our butts. My wife & I just picked up her 98 1500 from an expensive shop visit for new brakes, line etc. because the front brake kept locking up. Then the damn thing wouldn't shift higher than 2 or 3. Trans Temp light came on etc. Frustrated, I searched and found your video. $123 bucks later it is running better then when she bought it. We can now pick up our emergency horse trailer. Thank you soo much!!!
Thanks for the video. I used it to fix my 98.
However, the band "lash" you show of about 1/2 inch looks about right. The other end of the lever is where the approximate 1/8" band adjustment is - where the screw and lock nut are.
Sweet video bro. You get 5 stars from me. Only took me 2 hours after watching your post. Parts were $300 with a new filter but that's a lot cheaper than any shop would have charged me. Most of them couldn't even tell me if that was the problem. Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!
Now this video is rockin! You know your stuff dude! I hate watching videos on here and learning a lot of nuttin! You cover exactly what I'm getting ready to do and even though it's an old vid I just bought a 1997 dodge dakota pick-up and it's not shifting right and I remember changing the solenoids on older cars and it's different today but the theory is the same. Thanks!
Davie Jones Thank you !
+2012nugget was this a 5 speed standard ?
Standard? It's a automatic Terry!
Chris, everything I've read about that sounds like your bands need to be adjusted, you can find the specs in a Haynes manual, people have been saying they shift smooth as silk after that. Don't forget the filter when you got the pan off, remember, no trans additives
Thank you so much, you have no idea how this helped. My sister was going to buy a whole transmission. .. this saved her $600 ,!!!!!?
I just did this to my 1998 dodge ram 1500 v6 with the 42RE transmission. I was having the same problem. Only thing I still have is that I have to let the truck warm up, if not, it still has problems shifting out of second, If I let it warm up for 5 minutes, it shifts great. I just bought the truck cheap, the previous owner did not took good care of it, so I can expect some flaws. But thanks for posting the video,
It is highly reccomended you do, a kit from a local parts store should be arround 20-25 dollars that includes a pan gasket and filter.
your video just saved a guy from getting punched in the face.........thanks....
Well that's a good thing.
That was funny shit right there bro. lmao
This video helped me figure out why mine was stuck in second as well now I know what is next for my truck
Thanks for not talking too much!
You can adjust forward and reverse bands..reverse is adjusted internally..your front or rear piston servo may have a bad seal which would need a rebuild..if servos are bad you also need to see if accumulator spring in valve body is broken, this turns high pressure fluid into low pressure for smooth shifting and if that spring breaks it will only be high pressure which is too much pressure for your forward or reverse servos.
This worked for me, saved me 3 grand thanks bub
AWESOME! This is the exact video I was looking for!!
Shift points are delayed due to sticky valves or solenoids, my bet is on the solenoids. Easy try and not expensive at all. Go for it.
Will this problem stop your truck from going into the drive position?
I didn't know if this would fix it, but I took a shot, for about 300 bucks, parts, fluid, filter kit, I actually bought a tranny gasket from the dealer(26.99), way better than the rubber gasket because you don't need to put any RTV gasket maker on it, just make sure the surfaces are very clean. I'm wondering if this was the problem before, I just didn't know , Thanks for the video
Thank you saved me a bunch of money i watched this while changing mine out.
Dude you need to do this professionally if you don't already. Your explanation is perfect. I'm positive that is my issue as well
REAR BAND
-) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
-) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.
Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.
-) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.)
torque.
-) Back off adjusting screw 2 turns.
-) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut
to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
-) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan
on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft.
lbs.) torque.
short video, simple and too the point on how to do it. I like it
Actually I did! I googled and found the "46re-manual.pdf". Of the two bands, only the 'Rear Band' is adjustable. You can see the adjustment screw for it. Loosen the lock nut, then torque the screw down to 72ft-lbs, THEN back the screw off 2 turns. Now tighten up the lock nut to 25 ft-lbs. BTW, the Solenoid, transducer, gasket and oil ran me about $320 from dealership. Could have saved about $50 if I shopped around, but the no wait, one stop shopping sucked me in...
72 INCH pounds...not ft pounds.
Yeah, just a lil slack there, just lock the retaining nut with a sensible torque, it wont back out on you. The pan gasket depends on the two types, the cork type takes less, if you over torque it the gasket will just smash out, the solid rubber ones can take a little more, either one will not leak or back out on you so just use your hand and observe the gasket on the side to ensure it isnt smashing out if it is cork, somewhere arround 10-15 pnds should be good.
That sounds bad, first thing, check the fluid..is it full, burnt, full and ok. Then check to make sure it actually is shifting the trans linkage, Then drop the pan and check the filter and pan bottom for metal. I can advise further from there.
Hope this helped.
i have a 1996 dodge ram 1500. the other day i helped a friend pull her car out of the mud and now my transmission is acting up. sometimes it slips going from dead stop to taking off and is really hard to shift from 2nd to 3rd i have to manually shift from 1st 2nd to drive to get it to shift what do you think my problem is
jessiyoung87 same issue here
Mine is doing the exact same thing, same year and model too lol.
Hi, I have a 2000 model Ram 1500 with automatic over drive transmission. My truck just started having problems yesterday. My transmission will shift into every gear except for overdrive. so once I get over 45 mph the rpm are right at 3k... its down shift back into 2 and 1 as I slow down, up shifts again as I speed up until its time to shift into over drive. I also engage the over drive switch on the shift and no change. do I need to replace the governor pressure switch and solenoid or do I need to change out the over drive locking solenoid.... thanks
Great video bro!! About to do the same to mine momentarily, also have a 98 1500, just wanted to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing, thanx again!!👍
There is a cable that runs from the transmission to the throttle body called the detent cable. It is adjustable, by depressing the locking tab at the throttle body. This cable controls the pressure lever on the trans. which is responsible for the timming of the downshift/upshift according to throttle pressure. You may want to try to give it a little more slack, just a little and see if that helps.
What transmission does a 98 dodge ram 1500 5.9l v8 magum 4x4 have in it I can't find an answer
@@BulbBunny hey little late but it has the 46re transmission
If only I could get our local Dodge Dealership to watch your vid's maybe their so called mech's would learn something. Thanks
I have a 2000 dodge Dakota R/T shop wants 400-500 to change these 2 sensors out. seems kinda high. guess I'll try change them my self after watching this video.
Jack the front end up or one side at a time, grab the wheel on the sides and try to move it as if you were steering left to right, look for anything loose. Also grab the wheel from top to bottom and check for anything loose as well. The ball joints are known for going out on them, you may need to pry up and out on them with a prybar or very large screwdriver. Ball joints are what connnects the wheel to the suspension at the top and bottom.
Well if your stuck in a lower gear the rpm's are higher than normal. If thats the case, that will cause one to run hotter than normal. So when its shifting, your cool, when it sticks you get hot.
@2012nugget i just replaced both solenoids in my wifes 99 durango, new filter, fluid. the works. It runs a lot better but when she does a U turn the power cuts out then catches when she goes to accelerate out of the turn and its somewhat violent. Other than that, thats the only issue. But thanks for the video, it helped me out a lot!!
as soon as your trans acts up change these. i first tried fluid change and filter, didn't work and nothing on magnet drove for awhile before fixing now i replaced solenoids and lots of material on magnet and truck runs and shifts like new. easy fix 1.5 hrs tops on durango. bought mine on ebay from cascade transmission.
thanks I saw this last week and did Saturday two hours you are on the money . thanks a gain
Just bought me the same truck same issue . Thank you buddy
Doing this today thanks for the video it was very helpful 👍update it didn’t work at all turns out these trucks models have a shitty transmissions and needs replacing it
If your steering shaft is the issue, look on ebay for a borgeson one. I have one on my 01 ram and it corrected the problem immediately. Otherwise, do what 2012nugget said
Doing the same thing right now on the same truck, thanks for the video.
Hi. I have a '99 Dodge Durango, 5.9,V8, 2WD, 3 wks ago it wouldn't idle when I started it, it would just die, so I was told to replace the IAC, which I did and it idled fine for about a week. Now as soon as I start it, it dies. Plus, it doesn't shift from 1st to 2nd now, trans fluid is good. Are these separate issues or caused by same problem? I'm stumped have no idea what to do. Can't afford to take it in right now. I appreciate any input that might help. Thanks.
love this video !
saved my ass! thank you for making this .......saved me an expensive trip to the shop
Thank you for making this video was very helpful truck is back up and running👍💯👍
It may be in limp mode, which will cause a second gear start. With transmissions you have to determine if the unit is close to going out or not. If this is a new problem with no current history of failures I would go for it.
This worked perfect on my 99 ram 1500, thanx for uploading 👍
Yeah, I see that now "1989". You could have a sticking governor but more than likely a burnt or worn band. The good thing is that the bands are adjustable. I would service it as soon as possible to get a better idea of what the internals look like by the material in the bottom of the pan.
Hey brother I have a 99 ram van with the 46re it's not shifting to second or third when the transmission has warmed up?? It'll shift when cold ??? No history of failure this is first problem with the trans...would you have any info for what it may be??? Thanks in advance
@@Chevy-f4l That sounds like a clearance issue internally. I'd suspect worn seal but it's going to be internal.
I have a 1999 Durango 5.2 with the 44re transmission, I've had the pan off and saw these solenoids. I did a filter and fluid change, upon first test drive it was fine, however after work, it shifts first and second reliably no slippage, but wouldn't go into third or overdrive, before this, it would go first second then third if I'd run up the rpms get up to around 45 then go from D to N to D real quick while lifting off the accelerator then it would grab third. Sounds like these solenoids are exactly my problem. however with that being said, I have a friend who is an expert transmission guy who I learned has a source to buy transmission parts whole sale (used to have mechanic shop in town) I learned I can get all the transmission parts for a whole rebuild and upgrade to 46re guts for the same price as these solenoids by themselves. I think I'm going to have it gutted and redone...
Mmmm, roadrunner, love those cars. The total cost of solenoids should be arround 100.00, and yes I think you could do it just fine. As for will it be worth the money there is only one way to know unfortunately. That is to do it and see if it last, I have had mixed results but for those it works for , they are very appreciative of the savings . As for the detent cable, nope it wont help with this issue.
do you think this would work for a dodge transmission, thats not shifting into drive?i'm going to work on a friends' 1996 dodge 2500 van(5.2 v-8),it takes 10 minutes for it too shift into drive when it's cold.
Check to see if the filter is installed correctly, you'll need 4-5 qts. of fluid for this. Also stop by your local autozone and have them pull transmission codes for you, thats free !
Running them dry or low on fluid is b A d . You have one chance to bring it back with the procedure shown in this video. You can find the parts needed by looking in the phone book for transmission parts suppliers in your area or try a local parts store. The suppliers are much more reasonable . The valves do not like being exposed to the amount of heat and loss of pressure which it is exposed to when the fluid level drops. Also the fliter in the pan has more than likely filled w trash.
Happy hollidays to you and yours !
Did you happen to replace the gasket between the transmission block and the solenoid housing? Not sure if it actually needs to be replaced once you remove the solenoids and bolt the housing back up. Also, are there any torque specifications when bolting the solenoid housing back to the transmission and what solvent did you use to clean the housing and channels inside of it?
I found out from my dad's 1996 dodge ram 1500 has the magnum engine that it wouldn't shift and sometimes wouldn't stay running we found out it wasn't that. It was from the Catalytic Converter being plugged solid. We opened it up and carbon came pouring out. Now its an empty chamber, gives it a much throatier sound and the idle speed is 20mph! Only 11mpg on a good day, any fixes? I've heard plugs, airfilter, oil change, tranny fluid change, and dual exhaust all increase mileage. Any suggestions?
Thanks for making this video ,i t helps a lot.
Awesome Video!!! I did this myself, took about an hour, shifting great now! :-)
Did you add new or old fluid?
Thank you so much. This video helped me a lot fixing my 1997 ram 1500
how did you know that the solenoid and sensor failed? I have a 96 Ram 1500 , it was doing the same thing , watched your video, went to the dealer for the parts, 220 bucks for both, installed yesterday, runs like a champ. The sad part of this is that I've had work done to the tranny about 2 years ago, 1100 bucks, it was doing the same thing, Thanks, your video to the point.
Is this the same procedure for replacing the solenoid as it would be with a 03 Dodge 1500?
Yeah, that's sounds like my problem. Transmission was replaced in May and ran great until about 3 weeks ago. Will be swapping out that bad boy this weekend for sure.
good job! love the DYIers thanks for the simple to the point tutorial - thumbs up!
Good Video.. Straight Forward... I noticed that you didn't point out Torque Spec's of anything you did. Taking something apart is the easy part. Putting it back together, and torquing the Governor Sensor plate and then the Transmission pan bolts.. is sort of important information... I've looked around and get different Torques: some say 10 Foot Pounds, others say 13 to 15 foot pounds. Makes a difference. Cause you can damage the transmission housing or break off the bolt head...
Echo Wilson these videos are not complete guides as most people doing their own repairs have only the very basic tools. A little common sense goes a very long way in doing any mechanical repair. I have never used a torque wrench while doing this repair.
Ok.. No Problem.. as I'm fixing to do this sensor change out today..on my 1997 SLT 2wd Ram1500... Your Video was very helpful!!
Echo Wilson awesome sauce!
And another reason it may not shift is bowled friction plates in direct clutch or overdrive housing, when there bowled they won't want to separate allowing tranny to shift.
how do you fix
@@michaelperdue808 rebuild it
when you say transmission won't shift, do you mean it is stuck in one gear and won't shift either up or down ?
Thank you mine is not shifting out of first gear was told it was a speed sensor put that in no changes I was ready to get it rebuilt till I came across your video got a governor pressure solenoid and governor pressure sensor getting ready to put them in I'm hoping it fixes the problem if not any ideas on what the issue is, this is my first and soon to be last Dodge if I can't get it fixed!! Thank you for your time!!
Hi any idea on what would keep my Durango from shifting from neutral to revers and park?
Speed sensors on these transmission control alot. Replace speed sensor 1st and go from thier. I chased my tail changing out solinoids. Which was not the issue. It was a 30$ fix
Sounds like the valve body is binding, taking it appart and cleaning it good is where I would start.
It's hard to say without looking at it, are there any codes ? Try autozone and see if they wont pull your transmission codes for you, they do it for free ! That will give a better idea of either faulty solenoids or a worn out third band .
That transmission band adjustment has to be exact its not one of those items u just feel for and tighten down look up the specs before u adjust any slop
Nice video. Your voice sounds like Waylon.
Was this a 46RE ? Will all of this apply to the 46RE? (I own a 2000 dodge B3500, Maxi van/wagon, 5.9L gas)
cont>> Furthermore, I have never opened a tranny and only changed a pressure plate and throwout bearing on an old 72' Roadrunner I had 25 years ago. other than that only work I have done myself on my truck is change the brakes and starter, batteries and belts, filters and tires. Do you think I have enough "know-how" to play with the tranny as you are doing with this fix? Lastly, how much do those two original Mopar parts (the governor pressure switch and solenoid) cost? Thanks for any feedback.
Awesome video man, I have a few questions if you don't mind? i have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 2 wheel drive. mine wont shift out of 1st and at about 2000 rpms it loses all power and just revs up. do you think this might be my issue? i was also wondering if it could be my bands. or both lol, thanks
At 1:30 you will see me moving one, it has a locking nut on the bolt, loosen the locking nut and tighten the bolt to remove most of the slack, leaving a little.
I have a code of PO740 a/t torque converter out of range any ideas and PO141 o2 senior fault right side post catalyst. would one of these cause it to not go over 30pmh I hit the gas on it buggs out at light n it feels like it wants to shut off o give it gas it's fine or I take it out of gear it idles back up normal 500-700 ish drops past 200 n trys to stall out / shut off??I have this block piece in my hand
Yeah the solenoids are internal so you deffinately have a bad seal issue. On the upside if it is the pan gasket your going there anyway.
Thanks for the tutorial, this will be my next project also.
How can I tell w witch trans I have and were can I get the sensors?
Was this on the 46RE Trans? What did the parts cost you at the dealer? Would the parts that you showed be the same for my 1998 Dodge Ram 5.2l 4 X2? Thanks for your help!
Yes it is.Didn't go to the dealer, a local transmission parts supplier. Yes it is.
there 100 dollers a piece i just got them myself
Andrew Thomas did it work for you
Did you add new transmission fluid. Or the old fluid
Thats a good question because im about to do this on friday or saturday
I just changed what was in the pan. Its difficult getting all of it out
