I've seen Dr. Goldhamer on YT at least 10 times in the last 3 years. He is NEVER boring and I always pick up something new. Love the straight forward no bs delivery as well. He has a unique and very well informed POV. Some would say he's angry, I say its frustration or he's puzzled by how easily people find ways to shorten their productive, pain free lives. He knows the subject matter and can convey as well as anyone. Looking forward to his next show!
I found the social pressure and lack of support hard in the beginning of my transition to the SOS whole food lifestyle, but the results spoke for themselves and now everyone wants information on it. I direct them to you two. this was an awesome Q&A session.

I discovered chef AJ on rich roll and followed the trail all the way back to dr Mcdougallan so on all the way back to dr Burkitt. I’m a researcher and I have always sought evidence based nutrition and what a discovery! Only 1 month now and feel good and no cravings for rubbish wow ! Thankyou all of you gif your persistence on this practice and sharing. Unfortunately many people are not supportive due to their mindset of this type of eating being a minority’s choice, lack of knowledge, and critical thinking. Perhaps even fear of change and learning something new against their set way of life or I’ll support around them. I hope as a health practitioner now I can slowly offer choice to my patients to at least speculate further, observing my scope of practice of course. Love some support buddies as I am doing this alone at this stage.

So true. I've been slammed quite a few times by "ethical" vegans for offering suggestions to avoid SOS and processed foods and I loved this remark. It really echoed my feelings that humans are worth saving too. They're somebody's loved ones, and the costs if healthcare truly is a shared burden by all of society.

Alan is doing great service to those who come to him sick and unhealthy. In America its meat and cheese etc that cause sickness. In India ( I am a life long vegetarian turned vegan recently thanks to John McDougall) the problem is dairy and extra vegetable oil in our cooking In fact all vegetarians in India feel very smug thinking they are eating healthy. They don't know that milk and eggs are unhealthy especially for children and those above 40.
I have ongoing low blood pressure. My doctor said I should put half a teaspoon of salt in my water. I don't, I just can't imagine drinking that. I do put salt on my food. Is that still unhealthy to have the salt in my circumstance? I also found out recently that lactose is used as a filler in medications. Both medications I take had lactose. I took them for years and didn't know (allergic to dairy). I couldn't figure out why I couldn't feel better. I just thought I should mention it in case others need to address fillers in their medications. I am now taking lactose free meds to replace my old ones. I'm hoping it will make a difference in my inflammation.
My mother died of lung cancer over a decade ago. Out of fear she opted for Chemotherapy. The Doctor gave her at most 6 months to live. She had not smoked for 10 years prior to her diagnosis but was a very heavy smoker for 40 years (4 packs a day !!!). I did research and put her on heavy doses of liquid Vitamin D and NAC supplement. She lived for 1 1/2 years after her diagnosis. Her Doctor was shocked about her longevity after her diagnosis. I believe she could have lived a bit longer had she not done Chemotherapy.
Hey Chef AJ, Haven't commented on your videos in a while, I think. Still vegan for 10 years, still fighting to stay compliant with SOS free diet, still having falls off the wagon but then I get back on eventually. I have been yoyo-ing up and down with my weight as a result, though I am never above normal BMI - but my belly is always disproportionately large compared to the rest of my body, which is overall always thin. Eating SOS free helps reduce it partially, but never fully. I finally could afford to do a comprehensive GI map in addition to a SIBO test I did years ago. The SIBO test technically came negative (no rise in levels) but levels were high without rise. So that supposedly negated the theory I have SIBO so without a diagnosis I just gave up on solving my bloating beyond trying to eat healthy, which as I said, is really difficult to be 100 percent compliant all the time, especially when I only get partial results when I do so... even when I end up below normal BMI, I still have lots of post meal bloating that stays with me until the next day the moment I eat as much as one serving of fruit. But based on the GI map showing an infection, as well as general dysbiosis from various opportunistic bacteria and low SiGa, I had a consult with True North (again, it took me a while to be able to afford those again) and they think I had a long time ago an infection, which my body has been fighting for years and years, causing the gut immune system to weaken, causing other opportunistic bad bacteria to grow as well. They also said I might have a specific type of SIBO that the test isn't sensitive to. So while dietary control and exercise seem to partially help with my gut health and bloating, they just aren't enough. I'm going to try a protocol suggested by Dr. Csilla Veress and I am hoping to finally make some real progress on this 10+ year problem I have been trying to solve for so long. I don't want to raise my hopes too high and be disappointed, so trying not to expect too much. The True North SOS free diet is the only diet that has been able to put a dent in this issue, so I tend to put my trust in what they recommend more than others and I am just happy I have something to try besides diet, sleep and exercise. Those definitely help and are an essential part of the solution, but for my issue they just haven't been enough on their own. I did eat a lot of processed food while growing up and only later on when I started having this bloating issue did I start looking to improve my lifestyle. I guess I am paying the price for my youthful folly. Hopefully what Dr. Veress has planned for me will boost the effect of lifestyle on my bloating. Like I said, what True North recommends is the only thing so far that has even put a dent in this issue - so even though that alone hasn't solved it, it's got my recommendation for being the only thing that helps partially. Keep creating the whole food plant based content! If my bloating actually goes away I will update in a comment either here or to a future video featuring True North people. Love, Ruth

Hey Chef AJ. Perhaps next time you have a "no oil" big mucky muck on, please ask them to comment why Dr Valter Longo, Dr Gil Carvelo and other's who site studies claim that olive oil is not bad for you...I believe it is one of the most important questions the anti-oilers can address. Thank you.
"No oil" big mucky muck 😅😅 Chef AJ has had many guests on that have explained why they no longer include oil in their diet - Dr Caldwell Esselsteyn, Dr John McDougall, Dr Klapper and many more. It's mainly to do with arteries and heart disease, as well as metabolic diseases where insulin receptors are damaged by too much fat (oil). Chef AJ has also had guests that have no problem with using olive oil. What you decide to do personally is up to you. I really like and respect Dr Valter Longo and follow him, but I have made the decision to cut oil out of my diet, and I am happy that I have. Don't miss using oil at all. You are not going to get 100% agreement on this topic.
Don't let the oil "debate" (it's not a real debate, just a smooth move by industry) confuse you. The fact...THE FACT...is....every time you extract the oil from a food, you nutritionally demote the food. The very clear and simple fact is, the whole food source of those oils is FAR superior nutritionally to the oil. The "debate" about oil, is being carefully crafted to CONFUSE YOU. Eat food, not oil. You want fatty food? Eat food. Ignore oil. It's a fake problem, and a fake debate to get people thinking about it, and buying more of it. It's pure marketing.

@@CHEFAJ relapses are so painful, as soon as I see nuts I can’t control myself and my weight goes up north it’s almost that moment I need to eat something fibrous/ drink a tonne of water to help me fight. Apparently there’s a reptile brain inside us and it releases dopamine once we taste these high calorie foods it’s as if I’m fighting against myself from drug addiction EVERYDAY between 2-4pm!!!! Clearly I’m not hungry after eating vegetables fruits tofu potatoes. I hate how humans/ our hormones are programmed this way… there are many other important things to think about. Actually I instant potted lentils and had them yesterday and today and they are SURPRISINGLY filling! Must be from its protein content!Thinking about eating them more often

Right now, I have an Instant Pot FULLLLL, of brown rice, pinto beans, (from frozen, thawed but uncooked) green peas, fresh tomato puree, broccoli, and onion powder with just a dash of soy sauce. It's 6+ quarts of food, at only ~320 calories per pound, I left it like a soupy stew and the "liquors" that the veg, onion powder, grains, and beans gave up, enriched the broth to deliciousness. (It was good without soy sauce by the way, but I am actively trying to STOP losing weight! The soy sauce makes me eat more. That said, I'm eating 6 quarts of food in one, 2 hour meal. The weird thing is, it doesn't make me hurt like overeating on rich stuff. I urinated twice in the last hour, because my food is so wet. It's about 4200 calories, and I won't be hungry again till 24+ hours. It's 6pm now, so in about 4 hours, I will be comfortably full and sleep like a baby. I'll fill up the toilet tomorrow, and I won't need to eat all day, until about 6 pm.
Eating that way, I'm at Walter Kempner's weight chart weight. If I start eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiched every night, I will gain half a pound PER DAY. So no, I am not immune from weight gain;) It's my FOOD.
I have a question about sweet things in general. If you think you are somewhat addicted to sugar, does it really help to substitute sweetness with whole food plant based sweet things like fruits or date sugar or, in this case, mango-orange dressing? Won't your palate get the same enjoyment and want more and more because you are addicted to sweet things? Also, I haven't read the recipe but if you use mango and orange to make a dressing you aren't squeezing out the juice from the whole fruit? While I have been a successful weight loser, I still think I'm a food addict, and if I start in on something fruity (like whole fruit even) I can't stop.
As I understand it, the problem is when you associate the appealing taste of artificial foods with something unhealthy and then overeat on that. But it's not an issue at all if you like to eat something healthy 🙂. Your body isn't going to learn to crave a donut when you eat a ripe sweet mango. You will want to eat more of the healthy fruit, which is good and will make you adhere better to the diet.

But if I start eating certain healthy things, like whole fruits, and I have them in the house, I will overeat them and it will affect my weight. I'm thinking bananas (100 calories each!) and even apples. These are trigger foods for me. So I think it is an issue if you are a food addict and have a history of weight problems.
@@milobickmore1053 I do. And I've been very successful (lost 140 lb, HbA1c down from 11.8 to 5.1, maintaining at 144 lb). But if I start in on certain trigger foods (e.g. bananas and even apples) I can't stop until they're all gone, and it does affect my weight. Calories count, whether you count them or not, even if they are technically low calorie density. I don't have the same problem with certain more satiating starches, like plain potatoes. But sweeter things - I just can't stop. So if I want to have apples I limit myself to buying just one or two at a time, otherwise I will end up eating all of them in one day.
@@douglerner3432 How do you know that eating a lot of fruits makes you gain weight? Naturally eating a high volume of food will raise your weight from the water and solids content for ca. 1 day (until it's all digested). Also the glycogen storage in liver and muscles can easily account for a kilogram of weight. So it's very hard to immediately say whether you gained any weight from a specific food. I'm not claiming that it's completely impossible, but that it's not what would be expected from what lots of science is suggesting (and my own experience), hence this comment.

Kathy Morgan asked - "can a person on dialysis eat plant based?" If you're on dialysis, you had better be on a low protein, unprocessed plants ONLY diet. Rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruit, vegetables. A little bit of beans is good, too, but only half a cup cooked, per day.
@@returntoyehovahthelord6185 If someone is on dialysis, even the healthiest high protein food on the planet (beans) might be too much for those kidneys. So, out of an abundance of caution, I would limit them. That said, the data shows pretty clearly that some beans benefit the kidneys, so....more research is needed. I suspect that beans don't hurt the kidneys at all, in any amount, but I'm not sure. I err on the side of moderation with beans in dialysis patients.
This. I think what Dr. Goldhamer is failing to do is, to distinguish salt, oil and sugar properly. While salt and sugar can be used to make unhealthy foods taste good, oil itself is an unhealthy food. So salt and sugar really pose a problem in an environment where one might eat unhealthy foods that include them. Whereas in a context of healthy foods, salt is just an issue because of being salt (potential health issues in large amounts, e.g. by raising blood pressure). And sugar is actually very beneficial as a way to ingest extra carbohydrates when needed/useful.
I had to stop watching near the end I find him to have no empathy and if this is what True North is I will find some other place. Even Dr John MacDougall isn't this rude or unsympathetic
Unfortunately, he has a nasty way about him that interferes with his message. I had a hard time watching this and I agree with much of what he has to say. No gentle humor. It's all sarcasm. Even Chef AJ was taken aback a few times by his comments and they know each other.

Love Dr. Goldhamer! I think salt is the most difficult to eliminate. Oil and sugar were easy, but salt is tough!
It is tough if you eat a lot of processed foods because they all contain sodium

I had laser done on toenail fungus and it really helped/healed.I didn’t have a very bad case but it did work for me. It’s been at least 5 years.
Taking Vitamin K2 with Vitamin D helps control calcium formation.

She had not smoked for 10 years prior to her diagnosis but was a very heavy smoker for 40 years (4 packs a day !!!). I did research and put her on heavy doses of liquid Vitamin D and NAC supplement. She lived for 1 1/2 years after her diagnosis. Her Doctor was shocked about her longevity after her diagnosis. I believe she could have lived a bit longer had she not done Chemotherapy.
Wow same as my mother. She lived for 2 yrs. Died 02/23/23 ❤❤❤❤.

Haven't commented on your videos in a while, I think.
Still vegan for 10 years, still fighting to stay compliant with SOS free diet, still having falls off the wagon but then I get back on eventually. I have been yoyo-ing up and down with my weight as a result, though I am never above normal BMI - but my belly is always disproportionately large compared to the rest of my body, which is overall always thin. Eating SOS free helps reduce it partially, but never fully.
I finally could afford to do a comprehensive GI map in addition to a SIBO test I did years ago.
The SIBO test technically came negative (no rise in levels) but levels were high without rise. So that supposedly negated the theory I have SIBO so without a diagnosis I just gave up on solving my bloating beyond trying to eat healthy, which as I said, is really difficult to be 100 percent compliant all the time, especially when I only get partial results when I do so... even when I end up below normal BMI, I still have lots of post meal bloating that stays with me until the next day the moment I eat as much as one serving of fruit.
But based on the GI map showing an infection, as well as general dysbiosis from various opportunistic bacteria and low SiGa, I had a consult with True North (again, it took me a while to be able to afford those again) and they think I had a long time ago an infection, which my body has been fighting for years and years, causing the gut immune system to weaken, causing other opportunistic bad bacteria to grow as well. They also said I might have a specific type of SIBO that the test isn't sensitive to.
So while dietary control and exercise seem to partially help with my gut health and bloating, they just aren't enough.
I'm going to try a protocol suggested by Dr. Csilla Veress and I am hoping to finally make some real progress on this 10+ year problem I have been trying to solve for so long. I don't want to raise my hopes too high and be disappointed, so trying not to expect too much. The True North SOS free diet is the only diet that has been able to put a dent in this issue, so I tend to put my trust in what they recommend more than others and I am just happy I have something to try besides diet, sleep and exercise. Those definitely help and are an essential part of the solution, but for my issue they just haven't been enough on their own.
I did eat a lot of processed food while growing up and only later on when I started having this bloating issue did I start looking to improve my lifestyle. I guess I am paying the price for my youthful folly. Hopefully what Dr. Veress has planned for me will boost the effect of lifestyle on my bloating.
Like I said, what True North recommends is the only thing so far that has even put a dent in this issue - so even though that alone hasn't solved it, it's got my recommendation for being the only thing that helps partially.
Keep creating the whole food plant based content! If my bloating actually goes away I will update in a comment either here or to a future video featuring True North people.

The studies are not long term. Consuming oil is taking a gamble with your health.

Chef AJ has had many guests on that have explained why they no longer include oil in their diet - Dr Caldwell Esselsteyn, Dr John McDougall, Dr Klapper and many more. It's mainly to do with arteries and heart disease, as well as metabolic diseases where insulin receptors are damaged by too much fat (oil).
Chef AJ has also had guests that have no problem with using olive oil.
What you decide to do personally is up to you.
I really like and respect Dr Valter Longo and follow him, but I have made the decision to cut oil out of my diet, and I am happy that I have. Don't miss using oil at all.

Don't let the oil "debate" (it's not a real debate, just a smooth move by industry) confuse you. The fact...THE FACT...is....every time you extract the oil from a food, you nutritionally demote the food. The very clear and simple fact is, the whole food source of those oils is FAR superior nutritionally to the oil. The "debate" about oil, is being carefully crafted to CONFUSE YOU.
Eat food, not oil. You want fatty food? Eat food. Ignore oil. It's a fake problem, and a fake debate to get people thinking about it, and buying more of it.

Right now, I have an Instant Pot FULLLLL, of brown rice, pinto beans, (from frozen, thawed but uncooked) green peas, fresh tomato puree, broccoli, and onion powder with just a dash of soy sauce. It's 6+ quarts of food, at only ~320 calories per pound, I left it like a soupy stew and the "liquors" that the veg, onion powder, grains, and beans gave up, enriched the broth to deliciousness. (It was good without soy sauce by the way, but I am actively trying to STOP losing weight! The soy sauce makes me eat more.
That said, I'm eating 6 quarts of food in one, 2 hour meal. The weird thing is, it doesn't make me hurt like overeating on rich stuff. I urinated twice in the last hour, because my food is so wet. It's about 4200 calories, and I won't be hungry again till 24+ hours. It's 6pm now, so in about 4 hours, I will be comfortably full and sleep like a baby. I'll fill up the toilet tomorrow, and I won't need to eat all day, until about 6 pm.
Eating that way, I'm at Walter Kempner's weight chart weight. If I start eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiched every night, I will gain half a pound PER DAY. So no, I am not immune from weight gain;) It's my FOOD.

I have a question about sweet things in general. If you think you are somewhat addicted to sugar, does it really help to substitute sweetness with whole food plant based sweet things like fruits or date sugar or, in this case, mango-orange dressing? Won't your palate get the same enjoyment and want more and more because you are addicted to sweet things? Also, I haven't read the recipe but if you use mango and orange to make a dressing you aren't squeezing out the juice from the whole fruit? While I have been a successful weight loser, I still think I'm a food addict, and if I start in on something fruity (like whole fruit even) I can't stop.
As I understand it, the problem is when you associate the appealing taste of artificial foods with something unhealthy and then overeat on that. But it's not an issue at all if you like to eat something healthy 🙂. Your body isn't going to learn to crave a donut when you eat a ripe sweet mango. You will want to eat more of the healthy fruit, which is good and will make you adhere better to the diet.

I'm thinking bananas (100 calories each!) and even apples. These are trigger foods for me. So I think it is an issue if you are a food addict and have a history of weight problems.

But if I start in on certain trigger foods (e.g. bananas and even apples) I can't stop until they're all gone, and it does affect my weight. Calories count, whether you count them or not, even if they are technically low calorie density. I don't have the same problem with certain more satiating starches, like plain potatoes. But sweeter things - I just can't stop. So if I want to have apples I limit myself to buying just one or two at a time, otherwise I will end up eating all of them in one day.
@@douglerner3432 How do you know that eating a lot of fruits makes you gain weight? Naturally eating a high volume of food will raise your weight from the water and solids content for ca. 1 day (until it's all digested). Also the glycogen storage in liver and muscles can easily account for a kilogram of weight. So it's very hard to immediately say whether you gained any weight from a specific food. I'm not claiming that it's completely impossible, but that it's not what would be expected from what lots of science is suggesting (and my own experience), hence this comment.

If you're on dialysis, you had better be on a low protein, unprocessed plants ONLY diet. Rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruit, vegetables. A little bit of beans is good, too, but only half a cup cooked, per day.

@@returntoyehovahthelord6185 If someone is on dialysis, even the healthiest high protein food on the planet (beans) might be too much for those kidneys. So, out of an abundance of caution, I would limit them. That said, the data shows pretty clearly that some beans benefit the kidneys, so....more research is needed. I suspect that beans don't hurt the kidneys at all, in any amount, but I'm not sure. I err on the side of moderation with beans in dialysis patients.

I think what Dr. Goldhamer is failing to do is, to distinguish salt, oil and sugar properly. While salt and sugar can be used to make unhealthy foods taste good, oil itself is an unhealthy food. So salt and sugar really pose a problem in an environment where one might eat unhealthy foods that include them. Whereas in a context of healthy foods, salt is just an issue because of being salt (potential health issues in large amounts, e.g. by raising blood pressure). And sugar is actually very beneficial as a way to ingest extra carbohydrates when needed/useful.
Carbophobic? He recommends a diet of 85% carbohydrate. That's literally the opposite.
