When you’re a beginner going past waist deep is it a good idea
to let the lifeguard know they’ve got a beginner paddling out? Or is this just something they don’t do? No one to watch out?

As a lifeguard, we're more focused on the swimmers in that area. I guess you could let a guard know, but its hard to pick someone out in the lineup to consistently watch, and if its crowded enough and something goes wrong another surfer is going to get to you before any guard can if youre in the lineup. Obviously if we see something going on where you legitimately need help, we'll help, but you have a board attached to you and many people around you so surfers are definitely the lesser concern. Stay in a spot where you're comfortable and can handle yourself (of course the unexpected can happen)
