C&C Generals, Chapter Master/IAS, Darklands, JA 2, Dominions 4, Dwarf Fortress and Gothic.
If you only have to pick 1, do Gothic. I beg thee.
(And keep in mind that Gothic 1 came out 2 years before Morrowind did, but had the "immersion features" of Oblivion, except better done).

9:30 Your theory is correct. This is more or less a function of the Lithtech engine. It happens in other early Lithtech games, such as AvP2 but not always as blatantly. The hitboxes in this game are just really big combined with the fact that the character model and the hit box sometimes "de-synchronize" in Lithtech. That's the only real way I know how to explain it. Basically, the character model doesn't follow the box on time, sometimes it is a half second behind. I always noticed in AvP2 multiplayer a person could be shooting you whilst their character model was still rotating to face in your direction. In fact this was one of the phenomenons in AI that helped me learn how hit scanning and other under-the-hood programming worked back when I was a child

I don't remember difficulty being as BS back in the day when I played it. It may have something to do with Framerate. In previous Monolith game - Blood, certain events were bound to frames instead of internal tics, which resulted in Hand monsters strangling you almost instantly instead of in 8-10 seconds originally intended that gave you the opportunity to pry them off by mashing use. The rate at which you had to mash "use" was also tied to FPS, which made it impossible to pry them off if your frame rate was above 100.
So maybe the enemy aiming in this game is reliant on frames instead of tics, that would explain their sudden "proficiency" in confined (i.e. where you get high FPS) areas.
I'll test it when I get to replaying it.

My wife at the time got me the soundtrack on a physical CD and I must have played it for hours driving to work. There was a lot of cut stuff from Shogo because team was too ambitious considering it's size and time constraints to finish development on schedule. Playing as kid level, which served to flesh out the story, loading screens (instead of dark blue background with a bit of text) and few extra levels were taken out. Right after Shogo they got transferred to second team to help a bit with Blood 2, which tbh is much worse than Shogo. Poor sales of Shogo also resulted in cancellation of two expansion packs.

I f****** love that mandaloregaming actually knows about patlabor! Probably one of the best examples of the 100% realistic robot genre. As they require constant maintenance and upkeep they have a very limited amount of ammo supply (usually only six shots for the revolver Cannon per outting) they can only operate in the field for a short amount of time(3 hours) as their generator can keep working or up to 12 hours if they have access to their flatbed transport trucks to replace batteries. Also it was a series that depicted Mechs not being used in Wartime, but being used for police work to deal with disgruntled construction workers who were using their own construction robots to cause damage to public property. Orin rescue recovery operations clearing away large amounts of debris and Rubble in the cases of earthquakes or fire outbreaks. It was a really interesting world to see where mechanized Vehicles were instead used for construction purposes and police protection and enforcement instead of the everyday average non-stop battling that we always see in most military Mecha anime. The only other show that I could say was equally on par with depicting 100% realistic mechs has to be armored Trooper votoms. Well smaller than your average battlemech and much much smaller than say a Gundam or even a labour they were definitely used in a more realistic way they required constant upkeep they required Fuel and also they were pretty much designed to be disposable they could carry a hell of a lot of Firepower to hit hard as s*** but they were about as well armored as a tinfoil suit one good shot to the Torso and boom you're dead they were designed to be easily disposable and basically be able to be recovered and repaired using scrap Salvage. Realistic Mecha genre is such a rare thing n so unappreciated. I loved the idea originally in Titanfall where once you're giant robot ended up as scrap you were just able to bail out and then you were on 1st person trying to find another one even if it meant jacking one of the enemies Bots. That same thing occurred a lot in armored Trooper votoms.

In regards to the explosions; you see those "shells" from the explosion radius? If my assumptions are correct, yea, that's doing continuous damage until it fades, instead of the now-industry-standard of just having explosions deal a single "wave" of damage, they had an explosion radius which deals damage for as long as you're within the blast.

IIRC enemy precognition and ridiculous damage may be side effects of the game running at much higher frame rate tham what it was designed for.
Same thing happened with Blood for instance - if your PC was too good, and your FPS went above 60-70, crawling hands would kill you almost instantly, while at ~30 they choke you slowly.
Try using a framerate limit down to 30-40 and see what happens.

As a Gundam fan I can tell you that the suits don't look a whole lot like in Gundam, but then again nothing does because it's so iconic that every other mecha thing wants to distance themselves from it.
Except the transformable mode because that might be a reference to the Mobile Armors from Gundam, which usually are faster than normal Mobile Suits and are non humanoid, and this game is literally called "Mobile Armor". The major difference is that usually Mobile Armors are also more heavily armed so meh.

The most amazing feature of Shogo Mobile Armor Division was the multiplayer game. More specifically the laser "tractor Beam" feature in the Mech war mode plus 100% accuracy extreme zoom sniping in that mode which required 2, 3 or more sniping shots on an enemy mech to kill/destroy it.
That meant people did not fight each other on the ground, but in 3 dimensions.
You could move your mech instantly to any area in the game. And the environment had a few clutches that made for perfect sniper hiding spot.
Because of all of this, especially the tractor Beam.feature, Shogo is most favorite game if all time.

Shogo was a great experience back in the day when it was released. I remember it being challenging, but not quite as unfair as in the video. Maybe that's because I was younger then, or maybe it's somehow a side effect of running on faster systems? Probably the former.
One thing that's for sure I don't think it's aged well at all graphically, I'm sure people will enjoy it now still, but it's harder to get past that, when at the time it was a little bit more impressive, as lower resolutions also helped to hide the lack of detail.
