I thought it was an in joke - David Jason of course was referred to as "Dave" on set, so they had Trigger call Rodney "Dave" for a laugh, and it then became a running gag.

In my town there is a tattoo shop and on their gallery there is someone who has a massive tattoo of Rodney and Del on his stomach. I mean, I like a good classic comedy but that's going a bit too far. It must be quite offputting to be in an intimate situation with that person
