What Makes Alien: Romulus Great?

- Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez, stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Alien: Romulus is a fantastic addition to the Alien franchise and is now my favourite Alien movie. With an amazing lead in Cailee Spaeny, an incredible supporting cast in Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, splendid directing by Fede Alvarez, and an intense storyline that instills the fear of Xenomorphs, facehuggers, and chestbursters into the audience, Alien: Romulus is an instant classic for me.

I loved Romulus. The 'deep-fake' Ian Holm could've been done differently, but I still loved it!
Yeah that was freaky as hell
Yeah it was a great movie as expected. I watched twice
Definitely a risk, i think some moments paid off with it and sometimes were just uncanny. I did hear that there was a version where it was Muthur instead of Rook. I think that probably would have been a better choice. But other than that, i commend them for taking that risk, and i did think it paid off.
Agree but wdym the last 15 minutes was slow 😯😯 I thought that was the most exciting part of the movie
For me it was a bit predictable from a storytelling perspective because they foreshadowed Kay’s death so much and usually the alien at the end gets defeated so it felt a little repetitive - still enjoyed it though!
What's your favourite Alien movie? Who were your favourites in this film? Mine were Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson
Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson were great in this movie! ❤
I’m glad I discovered both Cailee and David through this movie they’re very promising actors ✨
Andy is a great character. That kid has talent!
I think they should have shown Rook through a monitor screen throughout the film. The lower resolution through a monitor screen could have hidden any mistakes from the deep fakery.
Nothing. It is a great first 40 mins, followed by some of the laziest writing and reliance on replicating scenes, and lines from previous films, that it becomes pointless. To say this is the best of the series is so demented that it suggests that this reviewer is insanely young and needs to watch a lot more movies.
I love the anatomy of this video….the music the voice the shots.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I've been an 'Alien' fan since the first movie came out in 1979 (yes, I'm that old), and I love the way you describe the 'Alien Romulus' movie. I've watched other videos of people saying it's a bad movie, but I don't agree with them. I agree with you, the relation among the characters makes it special. I like all the Alien movies (and many of the comics that expand and enrich the lore). Thank you for sharing your insights on the latest movie of this saga!
Thank you so much you’re very sweet ❤️
Let me be the one that everyone hates over here...In my opinion the movie is just "ok"...if I were to put down a list it would be as follows
1. Aliens
2. Alien
3. Alien Romulus
4. Alien Resurrection
5. Alien 3
My reasoning is that it played it too safe, using the same tropes not trying to do anything new (we already had an alien on a station in Alien Isolation the game which the director of Romulus used as an inspiration but instead of branching out he did the station again), also they overdid the fanfare, especially by using the same quotes in totally inappropriate ways and a totally unneeded cameo by a dead actor (which was btw very poorly executed)...also as a big fan of "Aliens" the movie I still think the marines of that movie were done dirty by having "old" pulse rifles 37 years later in the story compared to what Rain gets with the autolock pulse rifle (little bit of continuity problem and not understanding the lore, they should've used some sort of precursor to the "smart gub" from "Aliens" instead of the pulse rifle) ...I honestly loved the beginning of Romulus, I was thrilled to see some actual character development and for us to see their dystopian future, but again the focus was switched to the station (I would've liked the setting to remain or come back to the refinery planet) from where things went spiralling out of control (lore wise). I didn't appreciate the short incubation period of the facehugger and chest burster in this movie (from facehugger to full grown Xenomorph in 15 minutes), also Navarro's death was totally unnecessary since the station was inhabited by so many Xenomorphs, she was also just a trope (what should've been done to subvert expectations since she was on posters in in trailers seen being done dorty, is to let her be the only character so far to survive a facehugger)...I have to praise the movie for the visuals tho and the attention to detail in terms of the atmosphere, the tech, but what I can't forgive is the plot hole of having pods needing a bunch of fuel for a 9 year stint. Ripley after "Alien" drifted in space for 50 years, which means the pods actually use up very little fuel (and mind you Ripley ejected from a "truck hauler in space" while the pods in Romulus are from a state of the art research space station)...as for the second part of the movie, it was good fun, some decisions questionable and the acid blood floating in zero G altho cool would never work in that situation (real astronauts pointed that out) but movies are there to suspend disbelief so I will not put that fight as a negative, I loved it, the way Rain then moves around the floating acid, brilliant, new, loved it...if only they did more "new" stuff like that the movie would be higher on my list 🫶
All in all...I liked it, more than any other Alien movie after Aliens...but I think it could've been even better than it was 👍
The acid sequence will stick with me for a long time, even if it’s not realistic 😅 And yeah, fair points!
I actually felt the first 15 minutes was too fast for me. I didn't really get enough time to connect with any of the characters other than Rain or Andy, immediately loving Kay not because Kay's interesting, but because I love Isabela Merced. It kinda speeds its way through the introductions so the film can start with the whole 'Alien' part of the film. Which is probably the fastest any of the movies get into the Alien stuff with the exception of any of the sequels (so most of the movies).
It feels opposite to a film like Alien where despite it literally taking half of the movie to start with the Alien stuff, I don't really feel connected to the characters. Except... I still don't feel connected to the characters, so not quite the opposite. The opposite would be Alien: Covenant, which you haven't seen yet. But that gets into the Alien maybe a third of the way through, so it doesn't have a lot of time to fet you connected to the characters, but also does a decent job at doing so regardless. At least in my opinion. Not everyone is fond of Covenant.
Prometheus is another film that takes half of its runtime to actually get the Alien stuff, but I actually enjoy most of what they did before that point, so my feelings toward that film are different. And it's a prequel. So... It gets a pass in my book.
Love the profile picture. Hmm I see, I might have to check out Covenant soon then 🍿
I went to go see this film the day before my birthday and I only walked in to it with the knowledge of the first two fims and it was all I needed. I absolutely adore this film the way it was shot is spectacular the practical effects are some are my favourite the only thing that kinda makes me dislike it just a little is the deepfake but besides that this was one of my favourite movies I have seen this year
That’s awesome and happy belated birthday
Simply great? What is Disney paying you??
There is nothing memorable about these characters and that's because of bad acting and bad writing.
This is how I rank the franchise:
Aliens 10/10
Alien 9.5/10
Prometheus 8/10
Alien Covenant 7/10
Alien Resurrection 6.5/10
AVP 6/10
Alien Romulus 6/10
Alien 3 2/10
AVP Requiem 1/10
I loved it. some of the fan service moments were a little unnecessary upon thinking about it further.
For instance Andy saying “get away from her you bitch” doesn’t make a lot of sense but more importantly, chronologically, it means he technically said it before Ripley said it in Aliens.
Haha that part was a little silly but I love Andy so it didn’t really bother me
This is probably the best breakdown, analysis, and review, that I have seen for this film - VERY well done (I just joined your channel fam). I LOVED Alien: Romulus, it "hugely" surpassed my expectations. This was such a fun ride. My interest in the franchise just went WAY up.
@@poeticnation6251 Thank you so much and welcome to the channel 🤝✨
@@aloisflynn2003 You're welcome, no problem. Happy to be here, looking forward to more cool videos.
so i have seen it 12 times in theaters! i have a regal pass lol. i love the film i think it’s amazing
Woah I’m jealous haha
Good movie but certainly not great. On the plus side Alien Romulus is beautiful to look at, the acting is fine but David Jonsson was outstanding, the music works really well and the set up with young colonists wanting a better life was interesting. But way too many callbacks, fx that are really hit and miss, a final act that is just ridiculous and Big Chap is wasted on this movie.
What problems did you have with the final act? I agree the CGI on that one robot was fucked up but the rest was amazing IMO
@@motikrisis9340the whole final act was just dumb. She just easily kills like 10 xenos and the hybrid wasn’t even scary it was hilarious
Cailee Speany makes everything better
So real
great video! you deserve more attention
@@BianchiiQ Thank yew ❤️
I actually wanted more development in the beginning, getting to know the characters a little more a couple more scenes with each character and there life on there planet Etc. but thats just me i guess.
I’ve seen it four times! I’m looking for a fifth. It’s really well made. So good to see a very talented latino director like Fede Alvarez having success in Hollywood. The film is not perfect, sure. It has some flaws that I have seen in recent sequels, but Alvarez is capable enough to build a really good ‘Alien’ movie. I need to say it, this is one of my favorite movies of 2024.
@@AleMedina1989 Yeah I think it’s one of my favs of 2024 as well 🥰
Fede has done a great job . Excellent movie. I watched two times
so this is even better than the fist two movie? you must also like blade runner 2049 and the new DUNE right? you gen z's are all so predictable, the main if not the only reason you like these movies is because its new, good movies are not only made in your life time you know, please watch more movies, and not the ones that got recommended to you on youtube or by your same age friends
what's so wrong with having an opinion? Would it be interesting if everyone thought the same thing of a movie? Of course, if you're younger, you're going to have better connections with movie that are being made right now, just as how you're connected to movies made in your time. It's a movie, and while I adore films and everything that goes into them, sometimes you need to calm down and stick to what you like. If you don't like this movie it's fine, but it doesn't really matter if this guy likes it.
Agree 100% I loved Rain and related to every single character
Rain is an incredible protagonist 🥰
This one is also my favorite
@@erikayork You have good taste ✨

Is this a joke?
My least favorite movie is still Alien Resurrection, though Alien 3's a close second. I also haven't seen Covenant, mostly because Prometheus was pretty bad - like, if you're going to focus on philosophical questions, they have to not only be well executed but also be ones that I care about and/or can engage with (and I thought the Engineer's... everything, was dumb af), plus the characters were awful.
Alien 1 is still my favorite, and Alien Isolation is a solid second (yes, I'm counting the game, it's awesome), and Aliens is a good third.
Funny enough, Romulus sits almost directly in the middle of the pack, at number 4 🤷♀
Aww really? I loved Alien Resurrection personally but that’s a respectable opinion
Covenant is actually really fun. People complained about Prometheus not having Aliens and Covenant gives you at least 3
Nothing. worse than alien resurrection
Eh.......nothing
Great is not a word I would apply to this movie. How much were you paid to post this review???
Not everyone has your opinion bud
That's why it's my opinion, this review sounds like he was paid to shill.@@jakeheller9978
you should start watching more movies you can't be real with this review
I really do wonder about some of these youtube reviewers and their standards for what qualifies as a good movie. This was in my opinion the worst of the franchise and it took some doing to beat covenant.
@@davidcunningham9282he just made a whole video essay explaining about what he loves with the movie and I gotta agree
@sky545 that's it's good?
Loved it
