I just bought this device and cannot get it to work. Plug it in to the keyboard using the camera adaptor and the sound comes out of the keyboard. Plug my headphones in and they are loud and clear. What am I doing wrong?.
Thanks so much for finding this solution. This brings my days of searching to an end :) I have found dongles that have a 3.5mm jack and OTG USB-A ports, but a quirk of ios/lightning connector means that they can't be used simultaneously.
WOW!! i didn;t think about that....just get a lightning to usb adapter, and then a cable for your midi device, and boom, you can monitor through garageband! thanks Pete!
Very helpful. Thank you! The other adapters I tried didn’t work at all, other stopped working after about 10 minutes. This one worked and I just played for 30 minutes!!
Haha! Yes, it was you and about 10 others asking me this question that inspired the video. I figured there is likely lots of people having the same issues.
Great video showing the setup. Following your previous answer to this question I’m awaiting mine arriving from the US. Love Apple products, but WHY do they make it so difficult! Thanks for all your help.
Haha! Yes, I agree. It wouldn’t be hard to have a headphone jack, or even for Apple to product a device like this. Sadly I would probably pay $30 to Apple for a genuine device that did this. 😕
Pete Johns USB Sound Hub just delivered to UK from Amazon US. Unboxed, plugged in and......................... YES IT WORKS!! I can now happily monitor my midi keyboard ramblings without destroying my marriage. 😂 Such a simple AND inexpensive workaround for an issue where Apple yet again failed. Once again Pete..THANK YOU.
Fantastic! So glad to hear it worked out for you Ken. I can only go on my experience and while almost everyone I have recommended this to has had success, you never can quite 100% trust the quality of some of these imports. Glad you're sorted there!

Hey Diane. Yeah it should help you out. Though the quality is not as good as an audio interface. EBay is your best bet for these from our side of the world.
Well, not surprisingly, 4 years later, the device you recommend is no longer available. Have you found any newer ones recently? I'm hoping to be able to connect my midi keyboard, my wired 3.5mm headphones, AND (if possible) a charger so I can use this in a studio environment (so my battery doesn't go dead.) Thanks for any help.
Hi Pete, how are you? I have been following your channel since very long. Since it is 2024 can you suggest a MIDI keyboard which I can connect to my USB c iPhone and monitor it with a headphone ?
Haha! Yes. As I learned more about public speaking I realised that I was too fast and pitched my voice too high. Before each recording I tend to say to myself “slow... and low”. 😄
Great information Pete. Love your videos! This question is a little off the subject but I figure if anyone can answer it’s you. I have a new iPad 12 inchPro with the usb-c but it won’t recognize my usb mic. I’ve tried pluging straight in and using a powered hub. It lights up both ways but won’t connect. Any thoughts? The mic is a Samsun G-track pro
Hmmmm..... that’s odd. I don’t have an iPad Pro myself but have heard from others that you can just convert from USB-C to USB using pretty much any adapter and it should work. The folks at Samson are pretty good so perhaps check in with them. There are also great Facebook groups that have folks who may have ideas - iPad Musician and GarageBand Users.
Pete Johns ... Thank you Pete for getting back to me. I’ll keep on trying.... maybe I’m doing something wrong. But it all works great on my iPhone with the lightning connector, so it’s odd , anyway,Thanks again.
I have tried my Samson Meteor and it seemed to work okay but you’d probably run low on power for too many devices and need a powered hub. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Very cool! I currently run a USB microphone to my MacBook Pro, running GarageBand. The microphone has a headphone jack for monitoring. I can monitor perfectly fine when my microphone is plugged into my iPhone. However, monitoring doesn't work this way if I'm plugged into my MacBook Pro. Would I need to plug headphones into my MBP (via Lighting adapter) to monitor what's being recorded? Thanks again for the huge catalog of knowledge. Love the content!
Oh really? I’m not super close to the Mac world I’m afraid. I would have thought it would be the same and you could monitor through the headphone jack still?
Will this setup also charge the device or power the midi controller with a charging cable connected or will it be stuck drawing power from the phone? Or iPad?

Pete Johns Would you be able to plug in a USB mic AND another mic/sound source via the 3.5mm input with having the iOS device recognize both mics with this?
Unfortunately not. Once a USB mic is plugged in, this replaces the audio input (and often the output), so a 3.5mm mic wouldn't work. For multiple mics, you really need an interface or mixer.
In your setup, can you also hear the output of the iPhone as well as the output of the keyboard? Will this hub allow me to hear BOTH the audio from an iPad AND the audio from a digital piano simultaneously? It’s present in almost all of these cheaper devices. It’s why I suggest this is good for monitoring but not for true listening of mixing or mastering. You’ll likely need an actual audio interface for that ruclips.net/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/видео.html
