I gotta be honest, all I wanted was a Keyboard that I could plug into my PC to actually work and play with it. I accidently ended up on a video comparing MIDI Keyboard not even knowing what those where and decided to buy one since really seemed to fullfill everything I wanted it to do BUT I still was wondering what the difference actually is and decided to check this video. Now I feel kinda dumb that I expected the MIDI to have an extra port to simply plug in a box to play music. The fact that the only real difference is the Standalone compability of an "Keyboard" to a MIDI however doesn't change anything for me but I'm still glad I made sure to actually figure out what I actually bought, even though I'm now wondering how the price for essentially just a "controller" isn't at half of what those cost but that atleast gives me hope that the quality is high enough
I'm very late but I'm thinking what counts about the midi controller is things like velocity, action, key weight, functions, amount of keys, etc. Imagine a keyboard, it (most likely) has 88 keys, quite a bit of voices on it, hammer action, full weighted keys, and that should, for a good one, be maybe $400-$1000 maybe (I'm from the UK but dollars are a more useful reference). Digital pianos are essentially meant to capture the authentic feel of a normal piano, but for a cheaper price and with more functionality, like also being able to be used as a midi, however it lacks quite a bit. For midi controllers, you can use whatever instruments you want as long as you're connected to a midi output (computer), and it also has many functions to control the DAW of your choice, and being able to be the piano, drums, guitar, violin, as well being a lot cheaper ($70 - $600). So digital pianos are more authentic, but overall midi controllers are better due to their price, functionality and versatility.
Most midi controller comes with substantial software sythersizors and often the basic Daw its self. Most hardware sythersizors need to be connected to a PC anyway to get the best editing experience.

getting a 88 key midi controller is better for piano players and getting a 61 or 49 key with the knobs pads and sliders is a better alternative for DJ people or people that do a lot of mixing and mastering within a digital audio workstation

Ooooookay, I guess it's finally time to upgrade my keyboard my parents got me in back in 1999 now and evolve it into Midi Keyboard 🤣 Damn time really flies!
I was just thinking about your topic this morning so I typed in "midi controller vs keyboard". So thanks, I found this vid. But to be honest I would still go to midi controller since it's cheap and, you know, it's just a controller. Easy to upgrade because of the price. AND I think we are wrong if we compare these two devices because it looks the same, but they functioned very differently. That's why there are keyboardist who uses 1 keyboard and 1 midi controller simultaneously. Although as you've mentioned that some keyboards are capable to act like midi controller. BUT why would I do that? It's not its main function. And I tried Juno DS61, it's hard to connect it to Ableton and if you can make a tutorial of Juno DS to Ableton connection, I would love to watch it. Because until now, I still don't know how to connect it. Back to my point. It is also unfair for a device which has no sound and compare it to something that has a sound. It's unfair. It's like you are comparing a water gun to a real gun. But if you say midi controller and pair it with ableton live vs keyboard alone, now we are talking. Because really the main machine is not the midi controller but the laptop and the software with your sound libraries. If I compare midicontroller+ableton vs keyboard, I would choose the first one because it has flexibilities. You can navigate your patches easily. It will open many posibilities. Actually so many pro's that you didn't mentioned if you use the midi controller and the software, primarily ableton live. Because you can do whatever you want with the software along with the midi controller. You can even program your effects that you don't have to touch anything but your keys and it will change it's patch automatically. For example, you have grandpiano+pads at the intro of the song, and you want it to change to synth at the chorus. You can program it and if you start playing, it will just change the patch automatically without touching your laptop. You can't do that on keyboard. If you change patch on keyboard in the middle of the song, you have to take off you hands from the keys and click preset buttons or whatever the name it is on you keyboard. On the spot changing patch on keyboard? You can do that also with the midi plus software. So I think that's the right way of comparing it. And instead of comparing them, I prefer to use them together in live performance. And by the way, price? Midi controller+high end laptop+software+sound libraries (because you have to purchase samples if you want a good quality sound or ready made patches) are much expensive than one keyboard LOL!
Heya! Well it depends though. If you are kinda tech savvy you can go ahead and get a midi controller and hook it up to your computer/laptop/ipad etc. Cause midi controllers usually cost less compared to regular keyboards! :)

I want to learn how to create basic music beds for my videos do you have any suggestions. I know some people you a Midi Controller and a DAW to do this. Do you have any tutorials like this? FYI for a total beginner.
Keyboard or midi controller? For € 500 you can buy some nice stuff: - Yamaha PSR-E373 (219, Thomann), a great keyboard - Worlde Orca (~110, AliExpress), 8x8 launchpad with pressure sensing pads - Decent amount of left for an audio interface, mic and perhaps a second midi controller if you want knobs and faders You need a DAW as well, but most of them have a decent free version. I've only used PreSonus Studio One so I can't compare, but if you buy one of their audio interfaces (starting at ~90 though I'd spend the extra €20 and get one with line in, for versatility) you get the paid version (Studio One Artist) for free, and they even throw in Ableton Live Lite. And don't forget decent headphones! Though if you start from scratch you may need some cheaper options or choose between keyboard or midi controller. Swap the Yamaha for a Worlde Panda61 (175, Ali) and you should have enough budget for a decent headphone, though in that case I would probably save a little bit more money and buy in stages, as the Yamaha truly is impressive. You can swap the Orca for something else as well (Like the Novation Launchpad mk2 or mk3) but then you'll probably lose the velocity sensitivity, or the 8x8. All in all there is so much to choose from... It all depends on what you want to do. With a keyboard and a launchpad you're very flexible, but it may be overkill. Read reviews before you buy stuff, and if you can, don't always go for the cheapest option. It better to spend a bit more up front and enjoy it for a long time, than to skimp, get frustrated and either stop using it or buy the more expensive option anyway. It's difficult to figure out where you can go cheap, and where you shouldn't, which is where those reviews come in :)
@@paulnieuwkamp8067 Thanks for post, but purchased Arturia Midi keyboard. And in reality.. I'm not using it.. Because need a lot to learn. But in the future I will use it for sure. (At least for learning piano)
I would like to kindly ask you how a controller, a keyboard and a laptop are connected together (I have a mpk-mini, a Roland RD2000 and a apple-notebook with mainstage) thank you very much
So if you want to use a keyboard as a midi controller, can you use the sound effects in DAWs? It seems you can only record using the sound effect of the keyboard unlike midi controllers?
I have a Yamaha Reface CP (compact battery mobile piano) I believe it is both Midi and keyboard so I'd like to use it to play IK Media Virtual Organ Hammond B-3X. Is that worth it over getting another Reface but the YC organ? ($350)? It'll have the same limited keys but it's ok as I'm new to all this. If I learn it well, I have no problems buying a vintage Y10 or Vox Continental.
Isn't the Roland-Di a very light keyboard that can run for several hours on batteries? Speaking of the Di, have you used it as a controller? Is it difficult to use with DAW or just as easy as the Akai or M-Audio? Would you do a video just on the Juno-Di??
Hey dan! You're right but it's not as light as a midi controller, and correct the cool thing about the Juno Di is it has a long battery life with 8 AA batteries. Yes it's very easy to set it up as a midi controller! We'll keep that video suggestion in mind! Thanks!
I don't know how to play. MIDI keybords are quite cheap and I can use software with them to learn. I want to play for myself and I am always in my room then, so I can just plug it into my PC.
Hey! Well that depends though... Usually there is and you need to download a certain driver so that there wont be any latency. Try and download this www.asio4all.org this if there is any latency. :)
Hello people. For beginners what should I buy? I don't know how to play piano. I am more interest about drums, but also some a bit sounds to create music, also I wanna using microphone. Also I need to save the music. Someone can give me advice about it please?
If the keyboard has midi capabilities, then yes :) but there are also keyboards who doesn't have midi capabilities so be careful in choosing a keyboard.
Well, I am having a casio ma-150, which only has a midi out port. So, if I connect it with a midi to usb cable to a PC, is it gonna work? Your help would be appreciated.
Thank you. I was getting distracted with the idea of a midi... but I really don't want to deal with all the tech shit. A regular keyboard will be just fine for me lol.
Roland A49 with additional drumpad for orchestral style organic music production or something else? I already have a basic 61 key arranger and I want the best combo of both to fulfill each other's gaps and tagteam them. I have a yamaha psre353 as an arranger but I cant access it for now because of lockdown. I was planning to buy a midi keyboard with good keybed and minimum knobs and faders. Since I play piano style and am a beginner in DAW, I have no idea how important are knobs and faders and pads for things such as looping and all. Is it better to buy a roland a49 along with a separate akaipad or buy something else? I want the best combo with my arranger since it can be used as a midi too but only for its keybed. I mostly play piano and strings but would love to start learning looping, altough I have seen mostly looping requires pads too in midi. What will the best buy for me considering all of this? I'm really confused.
Yeah ! Cool, By the way, What about a midi Controller vs Professional arranger (Korg Pa600). May i know, As a beginner Can we learn by using a midi controller ? Or it is best to buy a professional arranger to practice and making of music production.
I think it depends on how serious you are with music production and performance. If you want total flexibility even in your learning stage, then midi controller is the way to go. A fast learner may soon find that a professional arranger no longer meets his needs because of limited upgrading or expansion capabilities.
Hey dude! I am new to this musical world, I want to learn how to play the piano in general, shall I get a midi controller or a standalone keyboard? And for the daw, I have Logic Pro X. Please answer
I think it's safe to say if your into music production but don't need auto acompaniments you shoud go for a workstation/synthesizer keyboards as opposed to an arranger keyboard. I very nearly or could of made a grave error of spending thousands of pounds on a Yamaha Tyros 5 but in reality you would be paying for ton of features you don't use as well as the fact an arranger keyboard such as Tyros or Genos is not really designed for music production. VST instruments can get you similar if not better sound quality at a fraction of the cost. But the same rule applies to any high end keyboard you should only buy it if your 100% sure it's what you need.
Sup bro! I'm a little late, but i hope you can answer me: Since i want an electronic piano/keyboard i want to know if i can play it normally (without plugging in any USB and just turning it on) and; if i can plug in a USB to the keyboard and to my phone so that if i play the notes they go play on the phone. So an electronic piano/keyboard can be played just by turning it on, and can i plug in a USB inside my phone to play on a App? Thanks already.
Hi Matt! yes you are right. When you buy an electronic piano/keyboard all you have to do is turn it on (you may need an amp if it doesn't have built in speakers) to make it work. Nowadays, most electronic keyboards are able to work on PC and phone apps as long as the keyboard has a USB port. Let us know how that would workout for you!
Many simple midi keyboards require little setting up and often come with standalone software to use them

- Worlde Orca (~110, AliExpress), 8x8 launchpad with pressure sensing pads
- Decent amount of left for an audio interface, mic and perhaps a second midi controller if you want knobs and faders
You need a DAW as well, but most of them have a decent free version.
I would like to kindly ask you how a controller, a keyboard and a laptop are connected together (I have a mpk-mini, a Roland RD2000 and a apple-notebook with mainstage)
thank you very much
So if you want to use a keyboard as a midi controller, can you use the sound effects in DAWs? It seems you can only record using the sound effect of the keyboard unlike midi controllers?
Good question! If you are using a keyboard to record in your daw, you can use the audio effects in your daw to edit its sound :)
Thanks!
Thanks for this video! :)
Do i need a powersupply to m-audio keystation 88 when i plug it to my phone?
Great info!!
Dude you are right..very nice video. .
I don't know how to play. MIDI keybords are quite cheap and I can use software with them to learn.
I want to play for myself and I am always in my room then, so I can just plug it into my PC.
this guy has style.
There is any latency if I use portable keyboard like yamaha psr e363
Hey! Well that depends though... Usually there is and you need to download a certain driver so that there wont be any latency. Try and download this www.asio4all.org this if there is any latency. :)
If you use fl studio then use its asio driver.
Are there any small keyboards with pads? but like standalone?
Hello people. For beginners what should I buy? I don't know how to play piano. I am more interest about drums, but also some a bit sounds to create music, also I wanna using microphone. Also I need to save the music. Someone can give me advice about it please?
does a midi controller work with a pc insted of a lab top?
so in other words, can keyboards work exactly like how MIDI controllers work after i connected it to a laptop? or would the functions be limited?
If the keyboard has midi capabilities, then yes :) but there are also keyboards who doesn't have midi capabilities so be careful in choosing a keyboard.
@@TedandKel i see. Thanks
Whats some of the best keyboards to buy?
I really like your voice
Its cool
Thanks for this
Roland A49 with additional drumpad for orchestral style organic music production or something else?
Great video!
A Theramin built in Cool!
Hey dude! I am new to this musical world, I want to learn how to play the piano in general, shall I get a midi controller or a standalone keyboard? And for the daw, I have Logic Pro X. Please answer
Get a weighted 88 keys synthesizer such as Roland Juno DS or Yamaha MX88. Of course there are more choices based on yr budget.
I think it's safe to say if your into music production but don't need auto acompaniments you shoud go for a workstation/synthesizer keyboards as
opposed to an arranger keyboard. I very nearly or could of made a grave error of spending thousands of pounds on a Yamaha Tyros 5 but in reality
you would be paying for ton of features you don't use as well as the fact an arranger keyboard such as Tyros or Genos is not really designed for
music production. VST instruments can get you similar if not better sound quality at a fraction of the cost. But the same rule applies to any high end
keyboard you should only buy it if your 100% sure it's what you need.
I'm planning on buying a Casio ct x5000, so i can use it as a midi controller? and use vst of beautiful 70's organ and mellotron sounds?
I have yamaha pser373 and this can be used as midi controller since it has midi out and in
So what is a DAW?
Can midi keyboard be played using a guitar amp?
Can I use midi keyboard on iPhone XS
Yes
No
Do you need a laptop or can you just play it?
Sup bro! I'm a little late, but i hope you can answer me:
Since i want an electronic piano/keyboard i want to know if i can play it normally (without plugging in any USB and just turning it on) and; if i can plug in a USB to the keyboard and to my phone so that if i play the notes they go play on the phone.
@@TedandKel thank you a lot! I will for sure tell you guys how it will work!
New subscriber.
great Vid
Thanks!
"Midi controller, unlike a keyboard is lite."
Akai Max 49 enters the chat.
I have both. Currently hoping to swap my keyboard for another midi.
Hi, Is there any difference in sound quality between these two if connected to DAW and recorded.?
Is it that hard to get the DAW to see a midi controler?
Had to look up what DAW is...
