- Hypnotist Traian Boyer returns from the prior week's show, along with his virtually talent-free victim, NBC page Michael Allen. Now that I've rewatched this, I understand why I didn't remember anything about the results of Boyer's attempt to hypnotize Groucho: there were none.

Groucho and Fenneman and the entire production team of YBYL were lightning in a bottle. A special lightning that will never be duplicated. Groucho was the center of that universe which every thing revolved. Groucho is timeless. He could never be replaced.
This guy was amazing !!! Not only funny, smart, knowledgeable, but just purely brilliant!!! No other word! They don’t make ‘em like they used to, they threw out the mold.

Groucho Marx! One of our greatest minds like Einstein, Jesus. and Jon Stewart lol. But seriously, Groucho was/is the best, with a wit that coupled w/his perceptiveness & charm transcends mere comedy. Love the Marx Bros but especially dig everything Groucho did on radio & TV later. Wish he found the love he needed. Thanks for posting.

Again, the hypnotism was just a clever act. Not real. BTW, regarding the final question, I remember as a child laying outside in our backyard on summer nights hoping to catch a glimpse of Echo I and actually did see it on several occasions. This was in a day when there really wasn't much up there.

His real name was Ted Boyer, Traian was his stage name. He was from Akron, Ohio and his child still lives there.
Allen Keller His stage name was Trione Boyer, but the real name was Traian Ted Boyer. He was the other famous hypnotist Pat Collins' teacher.
Allen Keller His real name is Traian Boyer, he went by Ted because Traian is a very different and difficult name that nobody could pronounce. He's from Romania but he lived in Akron, OH....with all of his family...
His real name was Teddy Trion Boya and he was known to his family as 'Bossie' on account of his lovely hair. He dyed in 1983 in Acron, Idaho,

I know what you mean, sometimes it almost as if the meanings of certain phrases has changed so completely that a person from our time would have a lot of embarrassing moments when speaking to a person from this era.

This was the only episode I could not watch all the way through because of the fake rubbish hypnosis scene
That hypnosis rubbish was enough to improve the network rating back then, wouldn't work now but they still have plenty of worse rubbish that works these days and the worst of it is on Fox network.

Yes, I knew YBYL was filmed so that the best bits could be used for broadcast, I guess that's what I meant. Definitely too much Boyer and not enough of the regular kind of ordinary contestant. I found Boyer to be a bit creepy.

Thanks for uploading this. I wish the unedited version was available to see. Notice the positions of Traian's hands when he is putting the guy to sleep. His hands are in different places on the subject's back, which reveal that the film is a composite of at least two different takes. Which is a bit odd, don't you think? Also, I don't think George was under the influence at all. Oh and what a surprise, Mike was thinking about becoming an actor. Still at least he and the girl got a chance to win some money. But I certainly wouldn't have parted with any money to go see Traian! One of my favourite YBYL clips though. Many thanks again for the upload.
I hadn't noticed the differing takes, but you're probably aware already that YBYL was over-recorded and edited down to the best 30 minutes of the hour long filming sessions. Probably any continuity gaffes were a result of sloppy editing rather than filming more than one take of any segment of the show (at least, I've never read any reference to segments being redone, but it's certainly possible for portions of the show outside of the quiz).
I'm not especially fond of this episode, which might as well have been retitled "You Boyer Your Life". I doubt there's any episode of YBYL that features so little of Groucho.

Of course it was staged. Notice the way Groucho asked "Have you ever done any acting?" At least they don't call it "reality TV".
I assumed that, however depending on who you talk to or what area you live in or actually what your beliefs are hypnotism is real. Whether it is or not remains to be discovered I think even in this year 2021. Good act very entertaining though .

@Joe Ambrose - Well my sister had a friend, who's dog was the son on her friend's first bitch, who was bred with Cletus, the son's father, who was sold to a breeder, who knew Groucho's daughter, who had a friend, who's teacher told her, that she heard it directly from the milkman, who got it from Groucho's gardener, who was given the scoop from the mailman. who heard it on his route.
It was a reliable source, and that's a fact!

The episodes with just interviews and the game are better. These type shows are just distractions.
I notice when Groucho asks the hypnotist if there's any lasting effects, the hypnotist says no. Yet last show he said hynoptism is used to help people with fears and stress mentally, spiritually, sometimes physically. So which is it. What hypnotism is is a loose cannon. You would have to understand the mind, and hypnotism doesn't.
Groucho asked "This doesn't have any lasting effect on him?". When he says THIS it does not refer to hypnotism in general, it refers to this specific joke they are playing on him, in this case. The specific performances he is being guided to do, just in that time and place, wont have any lasting effects is what he claims... But, in a clinical purpose, helping someone to overcome a fear of, say, dogs, could have a lasting effect. Thats the aim, and the specific request of the patient. And they would probably have several, long sessions, to build up that change. How successful that would be, or how useful hypnotism is in general, is another question - but there is no contradiction in what he says.
Something else to notice, though, especially in the first show, is that the hypnotist makes a point to counteract and/or remove his original suggestions. I have seen other stage and clinical hypnotists and the clinical guys always leave those suggestions intact and/or strengthen them with additional versions of the same basic suggestion. The stage guys, on the other hand, that I have seen were always pretty careful to do one suggestion that took the others away at the end of the gag or show.

The film is 70 years old it deteriorates over time!
It’s probably recorded on a VHS tape, because the noise you hear is from the VCR running. It’s probably a combination of the motor turning, tape noise and static from the cathode ray tube in the TV when it was recorded.

Back when this was made, there was no public consciousness of what "sexism" was. If there had been, this would have been controversial. In fact, being politically correct was unheard of for the most part. Not saying that was a good thing, but merely stating what was indeed a fact back then.
