The sensuousness of this performance is akin to a courtship. Been listening to this for 40 years or so, I discovered new nuances, flavour again this morning. Genius just pure genius !! Allah must be listening to him in heavens
For me this thumree pilu will always be the superb interpretation of pilu raag that attracted me to Ustad Vilayat Khan's gharana. This is such an elegant presentation that there are really no words to praise it highly enough.
This recording of Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Gudai Maharaj (Shanta Prasad) - over half a century old - remains a perennial delight and success. Another piece of recording of equal value is: Raga Miya ki Malhar featuring Ustads Vilayat Khan (Sitar) and Imrat Khan (Surbahar)...
Indeed. This recording was my introduction to Ustad Vilayat Khan and his music. I bought replacements of both these discs when I was back in India in '73. I still have them, but, alas, don't have a working turntable.
Nicholas Pearson How sad! vinyls are back again and I somehow feel that because of their analogue recording they sound richer than say a CD with digital recording. I am curious to know that in the alap part of the recital what feelings or emotions do you go through presuming you are not sub continental. I actually visualise total submission to Allah in all humility for all the gifts he has bestowed, as if a beautiful queen in all her majestic grace acknowledge your presence.
Probably the best sitar maestro ever lived on this earth. We miss him very much. Roopa Panesar has taken on his style of play which is such a joy. I may be totally wrong but I get very similar vibes and emotional attachment. I have not mentioned it to Roopa, but I hope she will get to know of my feed back appraisal. That was very sweet. Thank you for sharing.
If one's mind/soul is full of sorrow then this piloo in thungri style may act as a proper medicine. Another one is ustd's miah ki malhar with pdt.Gobinda Bose.
Vad tänkte egentligen hanns föräldrar när de dopte honom till tim ha!!!! Att han skulle bli en framgångsrik musicen eller en bea skådspelare or wath? jag fattar inte*L*L*L*L*L*L*L*L*L*L*L
Awfully beautiful. The rendition touches heart and the strings in his hand can create such a sweet and Marvellous feat unparalleled.

I agree with you. And I am also fond of the style of Smt Anupama Bhagwat . Her Bihag and shyam kalyan videos are astounding.
One of my first Vilayat LPs from the 1960s. Inventive. He was a master of this Raga.
Khan Saab was indeed 'AFTAB E SITAR!
