True, but Coach Donny is a shorter player too, and talks about how height can be overcome (that's one way to take the name Elevate Yourself).
Honestly the more you watch this series, the more you will realize that Sugawara really is sweet like Sugar. They don't call him Sugamama in the fandom for nothing.
Also, everyone tends to underestimate him because of how kind and gentle he is, but he comes in clutch when the team needs him the most.

I think the speration is also a way to break up certian definitions to make it more consumable to general audiences, so they focus on linking specific terms with specific people so its easier to remember and understand.
Allow me to elaborate a bit on the school tournament system in Japan, as it will probably come in handy later on (no spoilers).
The system is vast, the tournament are taken very seriously, there's scouting, TV-features, tons of people come to see the tournaments every year (this applies to not only volleyball, but I'll focus on it). There are three big school volleyball tournaments in Japan, one of which isn't quite featured, so I'll skip it. The ones that matter are Interhigh and Harukou, aka Spring Tournament / Spring High. Keep in mind that the school year starts in April and ends around March in Japan, and the national stage of Spring Tournament is held in January despite its name. Both tournaments adapt the Olympic system.
1. Interhigh:
- first big tournament of the year;
- June-August;
2. Spring High:
- October-January (January is the national stage);
- top teams from Interhigh are seeded;
- players about to graduate (high school seniors, aka third-years) often drop out of this one due to having to focus on their exams and getting into a university.
Japan consists of 47 administrative units, each of which has its own preliminaries to choose a team for the national stage (the hosting prefecture sometimes gets an extra team, and so does Tokyo because it's huge), so there's about 100 teams at the national stage of the tournament (girls and boys). You can enter any tournament (so, say, if you lost in the Interhigh preliminaries, you can still enter Spring High prelims etc).
The author of Haikyuu, Furudate Haruichi, has been collaborating with the tournaments for a few years, drawing promotional posters (and they have also done quite a lot of research at the tournaments).
I do not possess enough knowledge on middle school tournament system, but it is definitely there, and high schools with strong volleyball teams can extend invitations to outstanding middle school players to get them on their team (Kageyama mentioned it before - he didn't get scouted by Shiratorizawa when he was in middle school, so he had to take entry exams just like anyone else, and he failed).

I kind of wish Volleyball was bigger in America. I've been wanting to play for a while now but the only boys team in my area is over an hour away.
There are a couple girls teams but I don't think they compete much except among themselves.

I learned a bit of volleyball in middle school, just the basics stuff like serving, passing, etc. But I never really joined the volleyball team because of conflicting interests. Watching Haikyuu years later made me want to play volleyball again!

Hey Coach, just a friendly warning. There are some episodes that have a “post credit scenes.” I see that you end the reaction when the credits start and I don’t want you to miss any. I’m not saying which ones in case you consider that spoilers, but if you want to know I’m sure I or someone else could tell you.

As an aside, with Netflix if it gives you the "next episode" prompt (or auto-plays it) then there is no post-credits scene, but if there is one then it will play through the credits to it.

There are actual post credit scenes in some episodes. They are very rare, I can only remember one in the first season.

The subtitles are kind of inaccurate sometimes, like "baiting." What Sugawara said actually meant "don't say anything unnecessary [that would cause Hinata to feel more pressure]"
In another sub it was translated to "wisecracks". I gues it's one of those difficult-to-localize japanese phrase?

yeah agree with you!!! in my language subtitle it's also translated more like _'making fun of him'_ like what kageyama usually does _unintentionally,_ such as saying "don't mess up or i wont toss to you/you'll be benched" which for hinata it might sound serious. im no fluent in japanese so subtitle different confuses me sometimes, and i found it different also for *kageyama scene in **17:01**,* in some subtitles in my language it was translated to something in english will be like _"i need to gain trust from the members"_ instead of "the other members trust you (sugawara)."
i first watched haikyuu on netflix then on online websites. No offense, but Netflix translations are pretty bad
Here's some characters and description. No worries about missing stuff since I know it's hard to react and read subs at the same time! I also included their first name since they will sometimes refer to each other with their first names or nickname (Ryu for Tanaka for example). Underclassmen uses -san as a sign of respect.
Koshi Sugawara (Suga-san): 3rd year, grey haired setter
Kiyoko Shimizu: 3rd year, Manager
Sawamura Daichi: 3rd year, Captain
Ryunosuke Tanaka: 2nd year: Our shirtless boi
Tadashi Yamaguchi: 1st year, Tsukishima's friend with freckles.
Ittetsu Takeda (Takeda-sensei): Supervisor for the Volleyball team, he's a literature teacher.
There are more characters and the second years are there but since they haven't been introduced yet I won't put them here for now. And omg coach that's why we called Sugawara "Sugamama" xDD

Karasuno is based on a high school called Karumai high school in the Iwate prefecture. Furudate- sensei did this because he was born there and lived in Karumai until high school and graduated before moving to Miyagi. Hence, the story of Haikyuu!! takes place in the Miyagi Prefecture.
Furudate- sensei played volleyball in junior high as a middle blocker.
The little Hinata is Hinata Shouyou’s sister, Hinata Natsu.
I really love how you notice all the little details and tell us about the feelings when we play volleyball. I totally resonate with them and agree.

Netflix's translation is off a bit. When Suga says "Dont go baiting Hinata" but Suga actually says "Dont make any wisecracks". There are some translations that are off but TBH its not that big of a deal.
Like "Tiny Giant" is actually "Little Giant".

There isn't a school named "Karasuno", though the school that is in the series, is pretty much identical to a school in Iwate Prefecture called "Karumai High School", as well as the shop by the school is also in real life just down the road from Karumai High School.
Also Karasuno Merch is relatively easy to come by :D so go and buy !
i absolutely love how u say something as your initial thoughts that end up being the real thing in the anime. experience speaks a lot on your insights. props to haikyuu as well for being realistic to the point that it brings out memories and old experiences. also, suga is such a cute endearment! lastly, kageyama is my fave so i'm really glad u immediately understood him even if ppl always end up misunderstanding his attitude.

I struggle with procrastinating especially when it's something I'm worried or stressed about, and it really is true that the sooner you get it over with, that stress and worry will go away as well and you'll be able to feel happier and live better. Great advice Coach, it's so simple but it really struck me because even though it might seem obvious it's hard to put into practice.

Haikyuu made me love Volleyball. I played many sports like Cricket, table tennis, Basketball, Football but Volleyball catched me absolutely. I always wanted to play in a Volleyball team but my Parents didnt allowed because they said that I have to focus on school. Even though I'm practicing my Vertical for Volleyball with your workouts. You and Haikyuu keep me motivated. And when I saw that you are reacting on Haikyuu then I got more motivated to play Volleball. I dont even have a Volleyball and I am still practicing cause you are motivating me. I hope I will play in a team as soon as possible. You are one of my greatest admirations.
Watch Coach Donny's videos. I learned many things at home, by mimicking coach's movements. It is not much, but it's great for muscle memory so when you get to play VB you'll be more than ready. I can't recommend Coach's channel enough.

"Baiting" was a bad way to translate it - basically Suga told Kageyama to not say anything uncalled for, to avoid putting pressure on Hinata/jabbing him.
u have no idea how much i cringe at some of the translations of haikyuu in netflix. they even call the little giant, "tiny giant" like aaah i know they must mean the same but little makes more sense than tiny. it has more serious bearing to it.
@@pop_and_widge trust me, I do have an idea, I edit the official Russian subs this season, and the things I see that I wish I could unsee :"D Then again, having worked on season 4, what I want to say is that Haikyuu is highly contextual, much like Japanese language itself, and translating it without the context of at least the majority of the story (not to mention some volleyball knowledge) is likely a big pain (which is why I'm there helping).

@Jacqueline Tu that's what I meant in my comment! You're technically correct, but I wrote that it was a model only looks-wise, because from what I'm aware, it doesn't have any outstanding volleyball history (might be wrong though x). But yes, the facilities are indeed from that school.

I've binged Haikyuu!! two months ago. Completely fell in love with the sport, and signed up for my local club one month ago. Three trainings in, and really enjoying it! (don't worry, I don't yell chance ball and nice spiku after every hit). Your videos have been a tremendous help Donny. I look forward to this series every week.
When they put on their uniform I just instantly thought about the live stage play scene where this happened too and Tanaka messes around and acts like they are flapping their wings. I love this show so so sooo much!~ I can't wait for more of your vids
the school is drawn to look like a real school and some of the scenery like the hill they walk down to get to the shop is modeled after a real place but I'm unsure if the school is actually called Karasuno.
I'm going to have my first official volleyball game in two days, so I'm pretty excited but also hyped. I'll try to do my best although our team will probably loose because were all kinda newcomers compared to the other teams in our division. But there's always some hope.

Fun fact: Shoyou (Hinata's first name) and Tobio (Kageyama's first name) combined is "Hishou" which means "to fly" in Japanese. I think its really cool because Hinata is all about jumping or flying hehe and karasuno's team quote or phrase is "FLY" and their team represents crows soooo yeah even the names are very thought out and everything means something which is omg omg its why I love this anime so much :))) looking forward to more of your reactions, thank you!

Funny how you mentioned about Suga and sugar sweet! Definitely fits the team mum's personality! Another fun fact: Furudate sensei (the original author/ mangaka) chose Sugawara's name because of a senior at his previous workplace who got called 'Suga-san' and thought that it sounded nice, so he named him as Sugawara to be able to call him 'Suga-san'!

Btw, Japanese Highschool only has 3 years so a 1st year would be a 10th grader/sophomore, a 2nd year would be an 11th grader/junior, and a 3rd year would be a 12th grader/senior. Their elementary goes up to 6th grade so basically elementary is 1-6, middle school is 7-9, and Highschool is 10-12, at least I’m pretty sure

I'd say lowkey but not a major spoiler? he's expecting development for tsukki but hasn't mentioned anything about yamaguchi yet. I'm sure some people don't care, but for others (me lmao) might consider having a timeline on character development or when certain characters get the spotlight a spoiler too, bc it kind of sets up expectations for matches.

@@panitnanasawinchai8683 you're prob fine, I might just be the over thinking type! because I remember when someone told me that specific characters get more time in s2, I was constantly like "is this the match? is this when it works? does this person have something happen to them & get switched out so [side character] can switch in?" lol it was just a snowball effect. like you said, you were pretty general so I'm sure it's not a big deal for most people.

Hey coach , I have want to ask you a question . I really am interested in volleyball and this year I tried to join my school volleyball team but I was not that good , I'm a beginner . To be honest I got trolled by my friends pretty bad . I want to ask for an opinion , should I continue and train to try joining my school volleyball team or should I just give up?
Buddy self practice a lot even I was very bad at first and got trolled, cause i was trolled that made me increase my determination to practice volleyball more, then i started watching more volleyball videos in yt about how to practice, and I practiced a lot and got selected for my school team u 17 finally, and I was the youngest regular in the team . So bro dont lose hope ,buy a volleyball practice diligently

@@OMARComps Nice, when u improve the satisfaction u will feel is intense, and I suggest u do squats and skipping everyday, and build ur core muscles as well, pracrice self receiving and wall receiving , and self setting and wall setting, Next set a goal and try to best it everytime , work on ur footwork as well. U will automatically see progress. And good luck for ur journey
