We all know the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, the established king of the UUHP / performance summer tire segment, but what about the new kid on the block, the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02? In theory the new Continental should be a better package than the aging Michelin, so can it take its crown as the best tire on the market?
In this test I deep dive into the two tires to find out what is best on the road, what is best on the track, what has the best comfort, lowest noise, basically everything you ever needed to know about the two sets of tires!

Those Frenchie's have some kind of magic formula I think... recently replaced the PS4 (not the S as this is my daily driver) I had with the PS5 - I thought the PS4 was pretty unbeatable for a UHP road tyre - but the PS5 is actually noticeably better - and supposedly it has a longer life (only done 1000km on them so far so don't know how true that is)

Really in-depth review! I’m a fitment customer and Elantra N owner and had to set up some 18” for every day driving as road conditions are horrible where I live. Price will more than likely influence any track setup as I won’t be competing and no sponsorship!

Thanks for your great reviews. For me, sidewall stiffness is important for one reason.Flatspotting. I can let my R35 sit on the OEM runflat Dunlops with very hard sidewalls for months and no flatspotting. On Bridgestone RE003, with very soft sidewalls, it will pitter patter overnight everytime untill it warms up. Soft sidewalls also mess up the balance. When you balance the tyre after the car has been sitting an hour you will see the flatspot. On the hand the very old Bridgestone s001 non run flats have very hard sidewalls, never flatspotted and balance always good from cold

I've had the 4S for about 5 months now. I've had to get used to the first few moments at the initial part of the turn where the tire has "to get settled". The first time this happened, it caught me off guard, and I felt that I was going to understeer badly, but it was not the case. Once at the limit, the tire tends to understeer (2018 Focus ST Mk. 3.5). But it is quite safe at the limit. Kudos to both manufacturers for engineering great performance tires.

I really did like the Conti's but the set I had ended up with two that were slightly out of round and wouldn't balance well. I have not had that issue with any set of Michelins I've had and have a set of the Pilot Sport 4S on my WRX currently. I too have been waiting for this test. Just recently swapped from 4s's to the Conti 02's and have not been disappointed with my decision. Running 245/35-19 on my golf R and like any space I can get in the wheel wells. 02 seams a bit quieter on paved roads. Mid turn I can understand the vague feel comment but once hooked to finish the turn, I feel the Conti has a bit more positive bite which helps my car feel neutral in the turns with a bit less push. Braking seams as strong with the Conti's as the 4s's and have yet to get too much aggressive driving in the rain- Thinking the slightly wider grooves on the Conti's may inspire a little more confidence against hydroplaning but we shall see. Love your test's and I completely agree that if for nothing more than the cost alone, they are well worth the gamble!

@@v12-s65 It is almost impossible to use tread wear ratings for anything across different manufactures. Look at it this way. A Cup 2 is 180, by comparison a PZ4C is 80. Yet the PZ4C is comparable to the Cup 2 Sport 240. During this summer I have done some track days and road trips on the SC7 and so far, it outperforms the MPS4S all across the board including wear. While it is a real road tyre, it has a much larger temperature operating wiondow than the 4S. The 4S is pretty much done at 50*C and thereafter it falls apart. By comparison, a Cup 2 only starts to come alive after 45-50*C and run into the high 70's to low 80's. The SC7 has the cold and wet weather properties of the 4S, but its temperature range goes well into the high 60's. It will obviously not grip like a hot Cup 2, but it will demolish a 4S in short order. This is the party trick of the SC7, its temperature range. Brilliant for road cars that see both wet and dry track days in situations where a good time is more important than actual lap times. That said, it is not that far behind a Cup 2 on a track like Spa or Paul Ricard. The MPS4S was never a good track tyre and it was never designed for the track. And compared to the SC6, it is an absolute game changer.

Sorry that I have missed some of the old videos. On my VW Passat estate tdi 2003 estate I have tried 3x different bands and some ate some brands up in hardly any time, but the Continental just work so well in all weathers & and worked out cheaper because they lasted longer on the every day driver. Now need new tyres for the wife’s new VW Golf tdi and will most likely stick to Continental. I use two tyre companies, but one of them is the garage that takes on all the contracting needs for VW/AUDI/SKODA. Surprised that the tyre’s need to be mounted in a certain way especially the continental’s. Nice video again & thanks

Hey, UMC is my home track! Live in SLC and it's a wonderful facility. Tracked my cars and have done things like Boss Track Attack and Ford Performance School there as well. Really hope it survives as they've (the owners are Geely now) really scaled back on events here. Cancelled all professional races, which is never a good sign, torn down half the bleachers and not renewed contracts w/ many manufacturers- like Ford, for their schools. It's really bummed me out. Anyways, glad the Continental wears better now. Had the Continental EC on my GTI at UMC and tons of scrub after 7/10ths driving. Doesn't help that UMC is hell for passenger side front tires, especially the shorter (east??) circuit. Anyways, awesome review as always!

Thanks for a great analysis and review. I have a RWD 2021 Lexus IS 350 FSport with dynamic handling package (which includes a limited slip diff). It’s stock tires are Bridgestone Potenza S100s. I find that there is more tire slip on initial acceleration and drifting in sharp corners than I like (especially compared to my prior cars of a 2008 3series BMW or 2016 Golf R). I am thinking of switching to one of the two tires you reviewed and thus far the Michelin 4S has been my top pick. Please advise.

@@tyrereviews I can ensure they are really a one of a kind at low temp. I've never felt so much grip in a winter tyre (michel winter pilot and lots of other w.tyres that I tried) in the cold and a bit of ice here and there the car skid all over the place, lacked any kind of confidence and even at 60km/h it just hydroplaned like crazy on any small rain (that was happening even on s.tyre during summer). Since i had the sport contact 7 I've never had these problems and the car has always this strange really comfortable feeling that it can get you out of any situation, that is why I let them all winter and it was so great so much more confidence, direction and grip even on casual ice you feel this strange small tyre slip but so controllable and so grippy at same time. (I think it makes some micro slips caused from my car weight but the compound of tyre it's so soft that it manages to get grip)
Similar situation (slight rainy day, 6-7°C, similar year period, same road same corner 1 year apart)
with the winter tyres the car hit a major hydroplane from the back at 60km/h, (got lucky didn't end up in the ditch) with the sc7 it just pushed trough no effort at 80km/h like not even thinking about it😀

Continental is German for my German cars but, I usually go only with the French (Michelin and their stars for restaurants.) I think it's time to try a Continental.
