      @aember 2 года назад

      @@paulawatters489 You can! Grab your favorite vegan biscuit mix (like original bisquick) or pancake mix, shred cabbage into it (or if you're like me, just use your favorite bagged coleslaw mix from the grocery store), and cook according to package instructions. Just skip adding any eggs, or sub in a flax egg.
      You'll need to source your own favorite vegan mayo, obviously, and skip the bonito flakes, but most okonomiyaki sauce is vegan (read the package of anything before you buy, of course!) As far as the proteins go, I've always just left it out, but I'm sure you could toss in vegan bacon if you have something you like -- I don't think it needs it, though!

    I have to question the “instant” nature of this. Instant cup noodles are instant because you just pour boiling water in and that’s it. This is basically just a tub of half the ingredients you need to cook something. It seems to me like shredding the cabbage and cooking it are the most labourious part of regular okonomiyaki

    • @topazdazzlesDA
      @topazdazzlesDA 2 года назад +11

      it should have also come with the mayo and okonomiyaki sauce so that it would be more like a kit where you only provide the "fresh" ingredients.

      There is no "instant" word on the products. It just say "Okonomiyaki set that you can mix in the bowl".
      In Japan, it's pretty normal to have a set to cook or make something but not an "instant" like these.

    I've described okonomiyaki to friends as "the Japanese version of Egg Fu Yung." The flavor profiles are very similar.
    When I had it, mine was thick like yours, it had shrimp in it rather than bacon, and it only had the okonomiyaki sauce and no mayo on top. I had it my first day in Tokyo, and I spent the rest of my stay trying to find a cookbook with a recipe for it!

    I first heard of Okonomiyaki from the anime Ranma 1/2 where they occasionally called it "Japanese Pizza" (in the dub). I'm kind of amused by how it's really NOTHING like pizza XD
    Maybe it resembles it at a passing glance, but that's about it. I guess "Japanese Pizza" sounds better than "Japanese Savory Pancake".

    is there a link to purchase this kit? this is the first thing that has looked good to me in such a long time! I've been eating such "to live" portions of everything before I'm put off by it and I could probably kill that whole pan myself.
    edit: ESPECIALLY if it is similar to Takoyakis!!

    This is so great! Okonomiyaki is my favourite Japanese food, from when I lived there as well! I prefer mine Hiroshima-style, with noodles in it! :)

    I tried making okonomiyaki a couple of months ago for the first time. I was finding cooking it tricky (the recipes all seemed to have minimal batter to hold together the cabbage). Then half way through cooking we had a power cut. The power didn't come back for 19 hours (something that's very unusual here, I got compensation for how long it was) and the okonomiyaki was ruined 😔 . I think it'll be a while before I try again.

    The Stefen and MacGuire frames suite you beautifully! 👓 😊
    When I saw the tempura crispy bits it reminded me of getting fish and chips in the North East of England where I grew up. If you wanted extra crunchy bits, you'd as for 'scranshins'. 😊
    The okonomiyaki looks AMAZING. 😋😋Q

    I love those frying pans i cook my steaks in them! An other stuff obviously, maybe omelet and okonomiyaki anything really, except stir fry bcos that’s too big, I cook my protein in it almost always tho, I have 2 not bcos ones it a bit burnt on bottom I got a non stick one now so

    Now, see, Miss Emmy, that nonstick pan is no fool. With your bacon, you didn't need more fat. And my granny would have proven it in a cast iron skillet. Melt the fat from your bacon into your skillet, remove bacon, pour in batter. Lay bacon on top. Cook, flip.
    That looks so delicious. I can see how it could be explained as "pizza type" I would call it "bubble and squeak"! Thank you!

      Bubble and squeak is traditionally made with cooked leftover veggies including leftover potatoes. Okonomiyaki however is made with a pancake like batter and freshly shredded cabbage.

      @@wpl8275 oh, yes. Except in Granny's kitchen where cooked cabbage, raw cabbage, it didn't matter. It all got a healthy dose of salt, an onion and enough flour and water to make it stick. Occasionally, a carrot, maybe part a a rutabaga, and, of course, it was served with fried potatoes, eggs and tomato gravy. The only difference is she would have used the bacon for the fat AND nothing, not even caramel or eggs were brave enough to stick in her skillet... But bubble and squeak is one of those traditional northern UK dishes, Granny's wasn't her grandmother's, but they'd both call this that. It's just so interesting to see how tiny changes make the difference.

      Hmm, I don't really get the correlation between those dishes. There's no flour or any pancake-y type ingredients in bubble & squeak, it's just held together by mashed potatoes. Aside from the cabbage (along w/ Emmy's nontraditional optional addition of bacon) imo they really don't have anything in common with each other (besides the finished products looking similar). I really like bubble & squeak tho, we had it all the time growing up here in the U.S. and I had no idea of its name or origin until I was older, lol

    I’ve always wanted to make okonomiyaki, just haven’t gathered the ingredients. I wonder if one could substitute prepackaged cole slaw mix for the cabbage, since the slaw mix is basically shredded cabbage and shredded carrots. I’d hate to buy a head of cabbage and only use a small portion for the okonomiyaki, since it’s only me in my house. I’d have substituted prosciutto instead of bacon, since you can get it in thinner portions than you can with bacon.
