All these people talking shit like anyone in the band is going to give a fuck. These guys have been at this for 20 years. They're not hard-headed street punks anymore. Most of them have families and are nearing middle age. To me, the progression of their music from tough oi/street punk to a more folk-driven sound is from their own growth and changes in life. Music is a living, breathing thing and it evolves like anything else that's alive. The dedication that these guys have put into their music deserves nothing but respect, because despite people who want to keep them in a small niche of music, they've allowed themselves to expand and grow. Cheers to Dropkick. Looking forward to more from them.
I dedicated this song to my old man. To this day, my family never understood it. The only thing that matters is that I know he would love it. Thank you guys.
Rest In Peace, Shawn McBride. You are sadly missed, amigo. I cannot listen to the Dropkick Murphys without always thinking of you. Wish you were here. I know your soul is out there cracking everyone up with your wit & charm❣️

19 years ago, July 1996, DKM released their split 7inch with Ducky Boys, which was the first release ever for both bands and featured Barroom Hero, a song most of us likely first heard on the first Give 'Em the Boot album. .
Damn I didn't know this video even existed. Hearing this song on the first give em in the boot compilation made go buy their album in 1998. For whatever reason I have always preferred this lead vocalist! Do or Die is their best albumin my humble opinion.
The following albums they released are all well and good. Cheers to any and everyone who knocks back a pint or 12 while listening to em. But my fav hands down is and has been "Do Or Die", greats songs and I really liked the original singers voice and all around stage presence. Plus when I hear "Barroom Hero" I'm instantly teleported back to 1997-98 when I first heard it in high school.
I swear this is a tribute to my old man, he was born and raised in Charlestown. I remember when I was 18 (legal age in Canada) he and my mom took me out to get my first legal drinks. Someone was dancing too close to my mom & I watched him smash a beer pitcher over the guys head and beat the shit out of both the bouncers that came at him. It was at that moment I realized I will NEVER be Boston tough. Rest easy Big Dave, you were a true bar room hero.
Feel the same about me old man. Tough as nails. His nickname was kick. Later in life when I was in my 20s and had a chip on my shoulder he pulled me aside and told me that he never looked for wars he never wanted to fight but when it was time to he danced the dance. Bar room battles are never something to brag about but if and when shit breaks out there's certain guys you want on your side. Big Jer was one of em. Our dad's were cut from the same cloth. May they rest in power. Just saw Dropkick last night. It's been years. They played Rose Tattoo which is a super heart hitting tune for me. Was wicked. Cheers and much love lad🤜🍀🤛
Man, i love this song. it always reminds me of the times when i was high as a kite the whole time. Sometimes i got so wasted i didn't even know my own name anymore. But then, one day, i lowered my glass and said to mysel "Mike, you can't go on that way! you have to stop drinking RIGHT NOW!" Sure, it is not easy to stop right away. To make that decision will change a whole life, i can tell you that. So here i am. 15 years older. Looking back at what has been. My name is still not Mike and i am drunk as fck.
This really captures the essence of the Irish spirit. He may not be the biggest man, but he is so brave that nothing will stop him from taking on men bigger than him.
And on the 8th day God created the Irish and the devil stood at attention! God thought it wasn't enough so on the 9th day he gave us the Dropkick Murphys 🙏
This One goes out to Shawn P. McBride ,who introduced me to DKM. A bloody fighting Irishman, who left too soon. R.I.P brother. You Guys wicked remind me of him, and how much I love My New England, history, and your Real Music, Love this Band
Always reminds es of the legend Dickie Hammond of Leatherface, but for the right reasons... He was a legend, had a great big heart, would gladly climb into the ring for his friends, and was an utter barroom hero, especially in our little local! Gone to soon and sorely missed, Rip Hammond, you absolute Puma and king of the bowls! 🖤

My dad took us to the bar room when I was 6 & my sister was 9 months old. I got in trouble for "not watching her closely enough to stop her from playing with the ashes in the tray." I didn't want to be there but in 1973, you were still allowed to take your kids to the bar. He worked as a prison guard then. Maybe that's why they gave him so much respect at the bar. IDK For me it was no fun to go to the bar at 6 y.o. and watch my sister, who has no memory of it.
Boy, is my woman who is sleeping in bed right now while it's 5:12 in the morning here in Montreal ever pissed as I'm drinking and cranking this tune out. Hahahahaha.

Old and new DKM, its all good IMHO.

Salute to all our barroom heroes who are no longer with us!
Some of us are still here, cheers.
Thoughts and Prayers
Face down in the gutter won't admit defeat
Though his clothes are soiled and black
He's a big strong man with a child's mind
Don't you take his booze away, hey
He's been at it for years drinkin' balls and beers
He's a hero to most he meets
But inside he cries black
Swollen eyes this man he sheds no tears
Now his wife and kids sing a different tune
As they worry about their daddy dyin'
But this arrogant fool breaks every rule
It'll be nothing but pride that kills him

He'll be dead before the daylight shines
'Cause the thoughts and prayers of a million strong

20 years on and still a great song! The Rat may be gone gone but those memories live on.... wish there was more August Spies footage..
This is the best line up this band ever had in my opinion. Still great after but this shit hit my soul!!!!
Do or die is one of the best albums of all time.
