I first heard this version in 2009, while on a converted rice boat, cruising through the backwaters of Kerala, India. We had anchored for the evening, in a remote section, in the middle of the rice fields, no roads, only paths, that locals were walking back home after spending the day working the fields. My sister-in-law had this on her MP3 player hooked up to the decent sound system on the boat. It was dusk, quiet except for this song, with Van's voice dominating the moment. The local Indian people, who really couldn't understand the words, all stopped listening to this incredible song, and by the end, the crowd was over 50 people, in their dhotis, just mesmerized. The universal language of music, breaking all cultural and language barriers, a truly magical moment in my life.

Just for the record, there is no Robbie Robertson and The Band on this stage. If so, Robbie would be performing the solos performed by the great Dave Kilminster and Snowy White. However, there is a Levon Helm sighting (The Band's drummer), who is responsible for the wrecked band that existed prior to the Last Waltz (Marty's great gig in the sky). Due to COVID restrictions, I will not address Van Morrison.

This song is as much meant to be felt as heard. I saw Roger on his Dark Side of the Moon tour in Montreal both at the beginning and the end of the tour. The pulsing of the music had the entire crowd on their feet. Hell, we were practically levitating. Everyone was singing. Thankful for this incredible memory.

This is a masterpiece in music history. Simply the best cover version of an original song that I've ever heard, absolutely overwhelming, perfect... magic.
This rendition is laughable. All these people plus Van, who is similar to Roger in as far as being a turd personally, none can hold a candle to the supremacy of David Gilmour on this song. Posers.
I'm a fan of Van the Man, but I don't think he sounds good at all on this track. Not everything needs to be shouted at full volume with no regard for phrasing.

He did "the last waltz" right, too? Where "Van the man" as Robbie said afterwards, after a rousing take on "Caravan".. Van waltzed out there in a purple jumpsuit threw a few high (low) scissor kicks and mic drooped quarter of a century before it became a thing.. EVERYONE seemed to agree that he set the day alight, "turn up your Raaaaadddio".. Lol.. Sorry. Love it.
I love David Gilmour, but those hating on Van are drinking serious delusion. Coming from a Gilmour fan, Van kills this. That voice takes this song to new heights. Amazing how well he sings this live.
Mind-blowing version of a great song. Every element works to perfection...Van, The Band, Snowy/Rick on guitars, the orchestration...and of course the genius of Roger Waters. Bravo (to the power of a million)!

That little Irishman does this the best...gets tight into it...as if it was written for him....this song has a meaning for the ones that have lived life to the fullest and loved life....thank you mr Morrison...blow them away
One night back in 2004, my friends and I did a bunch of shrooms and we put Comfortably Numb on a loop and blasted it through the house all night long. It was a fucking amazing experience. We all bonded and for a time, lived in another reality. I'll never forget it.
Van Morrison’s voice take this song to another level. It is better than the original, which is a very rare thing in my opinion, to see a singer totally own another singer’s song.
That's too far but I would agree that the vast majority of covers I've heard (of any song) have been worthless and far inferior. This one is great enough that you don't need to trash the original to hold this up high.
This cover has a demanding feeling when Van Morrison sings. He makes you feel what the songs about. The original is great but this is more powerful where the original is mello in comparison.
@pfcjking1 Couldn't agree more. And as you can read my echoing your very sentiments (complete with the many replies from ppl who agree with you/me) for "The Departed" soundtrack of this song w/ the GREAT voice of Van Morrison. And as I said in my comments, while I love Pink Floyd's original, I liked Van Morrison's version even better. His BOOMING voice sends shivers down my voice when Van does this song.
Its hard to disagree this is a killer version and Van adds an extra verse with a full orchestra no less makes it OUTSTANDING! This is the best cover for sure, Although Roger and Eddie Vedder is killer also. But there is NO WAY this is better then David Gilmour's vocals and guitar solo. That being said I love this version. Gilmour's guitar solo is historically one of the greatest solo's of all time.
@Gino Santoro nah this was way better.. two awesome guitarists, the best band ever the band backing up the incredibly van Morrison.. not only that this was a symbolic concert that meant alot in history.
@@ninjavigilante5311 Live 8 is a far more symbolic, global, and meaningful concert than The Wall concert. And Comfortably Numb from Live 8 beats this one, with that soulful Gilmour voice and his impeccable guitar solo. I can accept opinion about Van Morrison voice is better, but the guitar solos, while they're great but no comparison to Gilmour.
Van Morrison does an amazing job covering this. The way he phrases and sings it is so different and powerful. It stuck out during The Departed. I also appreciated Eddie Vedder’s cover as well. Sings it with such emotion. Comfortably Numb is timeless and incredibly written. 👍🙏
This masterpiece helped me thru the darkest time in my life. I was addicted for 10 years. When I first opened myself to it, I was hooked. When I wasn't with it, I would feel sick. It made me feel as if I couldn't live without it. It consumed me and took everything I had from me. From my family, my business, every cent I had, to my self respect. That "it" was my ex-wife. After It was all over I heard this song and took the lyrics as my own... "There is no pain you are receding" She was no longer here to hurt me. "A distant ship smoke on the horizon" The obsession I had for her was finally leaving. "You are only coming through in waves" The times I missed her were few and far in between. "Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying" When she would ask me to work things out, I no longer wanted to hear it. If im not mistaken, this song is about drugs. She was the drug I was addicted to. IMO...the greatest song ever.
The raspy voice of Van Morrison, with the jagged sawtooth wave of Levon Helm in "You are only coming through in waves" harmony: Not often I hear a piece of music and think "I wonder what that would look like on an oscilloscope?"
This version of comfortably numb gets better and better Everytime I listen to it .bravo Roger Waters and band this was great ! Love and admiration from Lara G .
I mean I get it, The Wall can't be performed without Comfortably Numb. Apart from Dave and Roger setting aside egos and differences somebody has to cover the parts. I like Van Morrison a lot, but every time I hear this version I cringe. Same as Bryan Adams doing Young Lust, it's just awkward. It's mostly me and my weird tastes. For example I don't like famous covers of Beatle songs. Joe Cocker's version of I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends, is classic, but I hate it. I'm just weird.🤷 Elton John's Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds makes me cringe.
He's the greatest guitarist ever in my opinion. I love all his work with Roger in the 'In The Flesh' tour and his performances in The Wall tour. After seeing the wall myself in Italy, and watching and listening to his many solos in the In The Flesh concert, I've tried to copy his style in my guitar playing but he's just too good. Maybe it's his 1957 Les Paul gold top that helps him!
As a life-long Morrison fan… I agree… this production really does make his voice (and the heart and guts behind it) even more special. I've also always been a huge Band fan… now I need to get into Floyd.
Van Morrison takes this song to a higher level. His powerful and soulful voice gave me chills. Everyone performed this song outstanding. The guitar solos and the orchestra. Roger Waters threw the kitchen sink at this concert. My all time favorite concert.
@@galacticguardian2783 I love them both honestly. I just don't know why people come here and seriously try, with a straight face, to critique Van's singing. LOL.. That's like trying to critique if Michael Jordan is good at basketball.
Mr. Morrison really added a different flavor with his vocals, and that is hard to ignore. How could anyone not love him singing Gilmours parts??? He is incredible!
I've been watching videos of this concert the last two days and wow it looked so amazing. To actually put up a wall during the concert is awesome. Especially here in Berlin of all places.

Of all people, great to see Van on this one.
normally don't like covers or remixes, but this too bad ass and is my favorite version of this song VAN=GENIUS
What a powerful singer Van is. Amazing pipes!
Van Morrison’s voice take this song to another level. It is better than the original, which is a very rare thing in my opinion, to see a singer totally own another singer’s song.
Better than the original? BHUWHAHAHAHAHAHA
@@tanseygreen It is better than the original.
There will never be another Van. Brilliant man. Fantastic song.
In Van’s vocals is my favorite version. I’m so glad he sang the whole song by himself.
I lost count after seeing at least 7 vocalists helping van out.wrong singer, and snowy was piss poor aswell.
@@iphonemodDOTcom you're crazy dude lol
Van Morrison's wailing voice made a great song even greater. This is my favorite version.
prefiro a voz do David Gilmour, para mim a voz dele é mais bonita.. 😍
It’s horrible!
His BOOMING voice sends shivers down my voice when Van does this song.
best version ever..
mine too
Wow, thats got to be the most powerfull song I has ever heard in my 50 years on this earth
Van is the Man!!
"This Departed soundtrack is killer."- Mr Moltasanti.
OneAmongst2113; "So how was your day at the party?"
CRASH
I have become comfortable numb.
This system has no balls!
OneAmongst2113 //
My wife said this was the best version. I thought she was crazy. Clearly she’s a keeper!!!
For me, is the best too.
Goose bumps... Van's voice suited soo well...
Van Morrison does an amazing job covering this. The way he phrases and sings it is so different and powerful. It stuck out during The Departed. I also appreciated Eddie Vedder’s cover as well. Sings it with such emotion. Comfortably Numb is timeless and incredibly written. 👍🙏
What a truly incredible performance. Van's version of the vocals are how I always sing it. Perfection.
Maximus Decimus stay Strong
Maximus Decimus stay stoned man it gets better
Wow....your story blows me away. So sad. Hope you're doing better now !
So many weak willed people succumb thinking they are stronger than drug filth.
Maximus Decimus Wow. That’s one hell of a post.
They used this version on the movie the departed. Just amazing.every musician, vocalist complimenting each other.
The raspy voice of Van Morrison, with the jagged sawtooth wave of Levon Helm in "You are only coming through in waves" harmony:
Not often I hear a piece of music and think "I wonder what that would look like on an oscilloscope?"
This is a beautiful song, and Morrison's voice is incredible.
Morrison's vocal is under-amplified to an embarrassing degree.
Snowy white. awesome guitar solo.
@michael scott yeah.
Yes i think so. And dont know why. It is the best version, feeling with those vocals
This version of comfortably numb gets better and better Everytime I listen to it .bravo Roger Waters and band this was great ! Love and admiration from Lara G .
One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
I seldom leave comments, but how could anyone dislike this version. It's beautiful, ethereal.
Bots downvote this. No human would.
I really think I enjoy this version more than the original & that’s a tall task my friend ✌️
Van The Man elevates this song to its highest level…ever.
@@patricksnavely5850 Something seriously wrong with you if this version makes you cringe, you are most definitely in the minority!!
This was a perfect melding of Floyd and Morrison for me, I felt it. My pops made me listen to both, many times.
Van Morrison makes a great version of this classic and the two Guitars solo's make this live version of Comfortably Numb one of the greatest!
Snowy White on guitar is really excellent; he is a very underrated guitarist.
He wrote some incredible songs, listen to his solo work...
+wildwit What's his name????
Terence Charles White
He's the greatest guitarist ever in my opinion. I love all his work with Roger in the 'In The Flesh' tour and his performances in The Wall tour. After seeing the wall myself in Italy, and watching and listening to his many solos in the In The Flesh concert, I've tried to copy his style in my guitar playing but he's just too good. Maybe it's his 1957 Les Paul gold top that helps him!
And also Snowy White work in Wish You Were Here
Too fast and spiky here. This songs needs grace.
He doesn't play what Gilmour doesn't play...
Van, well you put your name on this song forever, who will ever sing it better wit more feeling? Man you did it...........BOB
if i could go to one concert ever in history, this would be it.
As a life-long Morrison fan… I agree… this production really does make his voice (and the heart and guts behind it) even more special. I've also always been a huge Band fan… now I need to get into Floyd.
JohnRoss Scott why were you not into Pink Floyd anyway?
Man the drums in this are incredible.
RIP Christopher.
Van Morrison is simply excellent and best version of this song
Van Morrison - what an incredible voice.
Van Morrison takes this song to a higher level. His powerful and soulful voice gave me chills. Everyone performed this song outstanding. The guitar solos and the orchestra. Roger Waters threw the kitchen sink at this concert. My all time favorite concert.
jc dova for sure.. It was a great choice from Roger Waters. He's just so good!!
@@andreaohara3402 Yes absolutely. This song was not the same after Mr. Morrison’s cover. No other version measures up.
I still prefer the more haunting original
@@galacticguardian2783 I love them both honestly. I just don't know why people come here and seriously try, with a straight face, to critique Van's singing. LOL..
That's like trying to critique if Michael Jordan is good at basketball.
My head will explode every time I see this, my soul will always rejoice!
That Van Morrison voice and those solos add a whole new great dimension to an already killer song
Mr. Morrison really added a different flavor with his vocals, and that is hard to ignore. How could anyone not love him singing Gilmours parts??? He is incredible!
THANK YOU, VAN MORRISON, for showing all the "wannabe's" how to do it!!!!
holy quacamole !!!! Van Morrison is VICIOUS on this song....!!!
Already a beautiful song. Made a masterpiece by Van Morrison
I've been watching videos of this concert the last two days and wow it looked so amazing.
To actually put up a wall during the concert is awesome. Especially here in Berlin of all places.
