I m really new to Bourbon's. And i found a Buffalo Trace a few mins ago, i remembered this vídeo and i just bought it without thinking. My daughter will order for me a Four Roses Small Batch today. I m really happy. 😃😃
Jon, Great details on this H2H. The good news is they are both very good drinks. And based on your tasting notes, people can go out and try / buy what may be the best fit for them. The War continues!!
Your head to head blind tasting is probably the best way to do it....some of the blind tastings I see are 4-5 different bottles at a time and to me that just muddies the water way to much and influences each other too much. Head to Head should be slightly more accurate on what you are tasting.
I think so. That's why I set it up this way. You can definitely see the effect the different whiskeys have on each other when you taste them side by side.
As a Four Roses SB fan, I've been waiting on this comparison. These are probably two of the most comparable bourbons at the price but, I slightly prefer the FRSB over BT.
It's a close comparison. In my head I couldn't tell you which would win. When I tasted them side by side it was a little more apparent. Some interesting things happened during the shootouts. I'll probably make a video to talk about them at the end. Cheers!
Nice start. It’s tough to decide but that’s why blind tasting is the way to decide. I want to say you choose right because I really like that distillery but 🤔 🤷♂️
It's a tough choice but a lot of these shootouts surprised me with how close some where and how far apart others were. It's a really interesting way to try all these whiskeys. Cheers!
Nice! That's how I would have called it. The 4 Rose's drinks the lightest of your lineup to me. And while i wouldnt consider BT "dark" it is definitely darker than 4 Rose's. Cant wait to see the next matchup!
To be honest this bottle doesn't really have much if any floral character. One thing I noticed too is how much the flavor of the whiskey changed when you drank it side by side with different whiskeys. It really changes your perception of the flavors. Fun experiment!
I get a little leather with Trace and a little tobacco with 4Roses. Other than that I have a similar perception of both. 4Roses is more of a dessert treat whiskey and BT is more savory.
Good video, I’m late to the party lol. Love both of these, and I would grab for the BT probably more than the four roses small batch. But I love them both.
Four Roses for me( it went faster than the BT at the house). $20 BT 750ml and the roses sb $40 around here. Shoot at Costco I can get a BT liter for $24.99. But if put against Eagle Rare($30) the rare wins in my opinion. Ten years is a sweet spot for that mash bill.
I think the 4R is a smoother drink. Has a lot less bite than the BT does. BT packs a bit more of a flavor punch for me which is probably why it got the W in this shootout.
Bt is good . I Can't get the 4 roses small batch here only the single barrel which is better than bt. Imo.. Yet you like the small batch better than Single Barrel (previously stated ). So bt is better than the single barrel? This doesn't make sense to me. The eagle rare competes with the 4 rosses single barrel. Not bt. Imo. I like and have all 3 tho. I usually buy what you suggest . Working on finding some Blantons and I'm considering buying JW green. :)
I actually don't remember saying that I like the small batch better. I actually don't think I have had the standard single barrel in a while. Sounds like a side by side is in order! In my head I would put the single barrel above BT so I guess there is really only one way to find out. Gotta drink em! Cheers!
I really enjoyed the video. I haven't had Four Roses Small Batch yet, but I have had Buffalo Trace. I really like Buffalo Trace, but I think I do prefer some lighter tasting bourbons better. So. I think this is a good indication I might actually like FRSB. Thanks for the review!
Awesome! Four Roses SmB is really good. The only knock people give it is that its on the light side so if that's in your wheelhouse you will love it. The flavors are great.
Blind Jon - the video turned out great. Four Roses is definitely the lighter flavored bourbon. I'd have to side w/ the BT as well. Will be interesting to see who 4R is matched against next. If it's Woodford, 4R stands a chance!!
I put out a video today on how I set the shootout up. But the answer to your question is that the shootout is complete. I shot the while thing before I revealed the whiskeys to myself. It was the only way to keep it blind. I also edited the video and out the bottles on the screen so I would really be cheating!!! 🤣
Both are very solid value pours and I think your choice is definitely the one that I would have picked, both nice pours, but your choice in my opinion as well does offer a little more complexity and unfolds on palate very nicely. Great blind Jon!! Cheers buddy!!
Interesting. I don't know that I've ever felt like it was a vanilla bomb. But not all batches of whiskey are created equal and everyone's palate is different.
Fruit, apple, vanilla, dried fruit, caramel.....every whiskey review ever. Do appreciate a blind review however. No reviewer saying how bad JWB is and then tasting it.
I wouldn't say every review, but a lot of bourbon reviews for sure. Those are very standard flavors for bourbon and most of them have them in varying degrees. It's the balance of those flavors that really makes the whiskey. Along with the occasional unique characters or two. Especially when you are doing reviews blind, you don't have the time to sit with the whiskey for a prolonged period and dive deep for flavors. It's the price of doing it blind. Cheers!
Great review as usual, Jon. I've never had 4R SmB but if it's lighter than BT, I guess I'm not missing much. I like BT but, to me, it's very light bodied with mild flavors. But it does have great balance to it, as you said. Cheers!
I am one of the few who doesn’t really like Buffalo trace, same with that specific four roses bottle. I’d guess I’d rather drink the four roses since it sorta taste good witho almost no complexity
It's a shootout! These whiskeys are going to go head to head with several other whiskeys from other distilleries. This was just the first random match-up. The purpose it to put similar whiskeys from different major distilleries head to head. Also, wouldn't comparing it to Weller SR be the same difference as it is a wheated whiskey and has no rye in it?
so which is better 4rsb or wild turkey??? so far i like buffalo trace better because its cheaper and still taste great. Do you think wild turkey compete with the 4rsb? wild turkey is also alot cheaper too great value
Absolutely! And I wouldn't call it hands down either way for me. Pretty close race. I challenge you though to drink them side by side like this. It's an interesting experience trying different Bourbons side by side. Cheers!
I definitely like Buffalo Trace over Four Roses. Now Woodford Reserve Double Oaked blows them both out of the water!!! Although both Four Roses & Buffalo Trace $35 compared to $66.99 for The Double Oaked!!!
Probably true. But Four Roses single barrel didn't fit into the criteria for this shootout as it is $15-20 more than any of these bottles. Don't worry, we will definitely do another shootout in the future that will feature the SiB. Cheers!
THIS CLOWN 🤡 SHOULD HAVE USED FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL SPECIAL EDITION THAT IS FOUR ROSES BEST PREMIUM WHISKEY/BURBON. IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN BUFFALO TRACE AWAY EASILY. ❤
I m really new to Bourbon's. And i found a Buffalo Trace a few mins ago, i remembered this vídeo and i just bought it without thinking. My daughter will order for me a Four Roses Small Batch today. I m really happy. 😃😃
Smelling: "#2 feels a little bit darker, a little bit lighter" -you're killing me bro. Lol!
What? You don't like to smell #2? 🤣
Jon, Great details on this H2H. The good news is they are both very good drinks. And based on your tasting notes, people can go out and try / buy what may be the best fit for them. The War continues!!
So much war to come! The 100 years war will have nothing on this shootout!
I like them both. Delicious.
Agreed! Both are great budget pours.
Both are good. I think you got it right, Buffalo Trace slightly ahead. I can tell now, this is gonna be an awesome shootout.
I think it will be! But I might be biased 🤣👍
I always value your thoughts on whiskey and have bought various bottles after watching your reviews. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Cecil! Helping even one person find a whiskey they enjoy makes it all worth it. Cheers my friend!!
Buffalo Trace for the win!
Oh yeah. Buffalo Trace wins the day! But will it win the next round.....we shall see!
This is such a cool idea, now I might just have to set up my own distillery war
Do it for sure! It's a ton of fun.

I'd agree with this, the small batch is just a bit disappointing and the classic BT is going to be strong for sure.
The 4R is definitely lighter. The BT had so much more flavor it made it feel like a bit higher proof! I still like both though.
I bought Four Roses yellow label and I like it a lot. I am however going to check out Buffalo Trace, thanks for the review.
CHEERS!

Thought this was the small batch select. Was going to say Buffalo Trace for the price. Realizing its the Small batch, i still say BT, but for taste.
Nice start. It’s tough to decide but that’s why blind tasting is the way to decide. I want to say you choose right because I really like that distillery but 🤔 🤷♂️

It's funny how different the whiskeys come across when you drink them next to different whiskeys. Totally changes your perception of it.
Not sure why your channel hasn’t exploded with subs. To me it is the best out there. Others are way above my head and snobby.
You and me both! Haha Thanks!
I like your style, I would have had to have a couple more shots to be sure!
If I wasn't shooting so many if these at the time I might have had more too! 🤣
Both are great tasting bourbons. I slightly prefer the BT. I'm surprised that Jon didn't mention the floral type notes of the Four Roses.
To be honest this bottle doesn't really have much if any floral character. One thing I noticed too is how much the flavor of the whiskey changed when you drank it side by side with different whiskeys. It really changes your perception of the flavors. Fun experiment!

Buffalo Trace - yea!
Oh yeah!
What would be better for a beginner? Someone just getting into whiskey
Good job! Fine review.
Thanks! Lots more videos in that series of you like the format. Cheers!

I do appreciate those who can smell and taste the notes like you described. I can’t. To many years working in a coal burning power plant. 👍
That's a bummer. Hopefully your taste buds are good to go!
nice channel bro,..woodford reserve has a awesome great taste...its number 1 on my list

Thanks! I'm glad 4R gets another chance because I really do enjoy the flavors.
i havent tried 4 roses or buffalo trace yet im just sayin but im currently drinking pendleton on the rocks
How are you doing a blind shootout when you can read the comments and see what you picked?
I put out a video today on how I set the shootout up. But the answer to your question is that the shootout is complete. I shot the while thing before I revealed the whiskeys to myself. It was the only way to keep it blind. I also edited the video and out the bottles on the screen so I would really be cheating!!! 🤣
The last time I tasted BT was about 20 years ago. It had a musty cellar taste that was unpleasant. Never bought another bottle.
Both are very solid value pours and I think your choice is definitely the one that I would have picked, both nice pours, but your choice in my opinion as well does offer a little more complexity and unfolds on palate very nicely. Great blind Jon!! Cheers buddy!!
Thanks! BT is a very sold pour. Especially for $20! It's really eye opening how good all these whiskey are and all were under $25.
I havr tasted both and for me BT had to much vanilla when I tasted it.
Interesting. I don't know that I've ever felt like it was a vanilla bomb. But not all batches of whiskey are created equal and everyone's palate is different.
First! Love the format.
Winning! 👍 Out if curiosity how did you find this video? Its not set to go public for a couple hours.

Me either...waited a month for a bottle here In Virginia. It was all hype...did not like the ethanol finish.
You should try Buffalo Trace vs Elijah Craig sometime.
Comparing apples to oranges. 4RSB.. higher eye content than BT. Try tasting 4RSB to a Wild Turkey, and the BT to a Weller SR or perhaps Eagle Rare.

@@BlindWhiskeyReviews Greetings from Cabo San Lucas, winter weather advisory from my home in Illinois 😎🏝
Buffalo trace all day!
Everyone loves a little BT. And it's $5 cheaper than the 4R!
Nice video. Try use coffee to clean the nose. Hi from Brazil.
Yeah coffee does a pretty good job. I don't drink it so I don't have any around. Cheers!
30$ bottle vs 45$ bottle buffalo wins for the price to bad. The fours roses single barrel is 60$ here I heard allot of hype There
I definitely like Buffalo Trace over Four Roses. Now Woodford Reserve Double Oaked blows them both out of the water!!! Although both Four Roses & Buffalo Trace $35 compared to $66.99 for The Double Oaked!!!
Noo wayyy dude, Four Roses wins this round.
Not a practical review because you can't find buffalo trace with a search warrent!
I hear a dog whining in the background.
Yup. Thank my crappy neighbors for that.
Please let that puppy in the background out of the crate!!!
I don't own a dog at the moment but maybe you were hearing my neighbors dog. It barks alot. Its a problem.
Your choice of these two bourbons , make me question your taste buds "/
Four Roses Single Barrel better than those two
