Just when you thought it was safe to stare into a mirror with the lights off and say some spooky ghost's name five times! ...wait a minute... okay, bad example, but Candyman is still an interesting example of the urban legend genre, in that it is a recognizable tale while at the same time an original one. Also, personally I find Candyman less scary and more... cuddly? Those baby bees are so cute!

In Barker's original short story, the Candyman isn't even black (in fact, he's described as having 'waxy yellow' flesh with a 'hint of rouge on his jaundiced cheeks'). The story is also set in and around a fictional English council-estate compound called 'Butt's Court' in the late 1970s. The alternate American setting and racial themes were incorporated into the film, at least in part, as a means of addressing the racially-charged violence and societal unrest occurring in the U.S. at the time.

@@lionelhutz5137 Indeed. Methinks Mr Barker’s creation may have been ‘inspired’, as it were, by _Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’s_ infamous Child Catcher (who, apart from the similar physical appearance and fashion sense, operated under the guise of a sweets vendor, or ‘candy man’), with perhaps a dash of Worzel Gummidge thrown in for good measure.

Hey Decker! I freaking love this movie because it's a story about the power of stories. I always considered Candyman and Helen (at the end) to be a tulpa. In the story, Candyman is a tragic tale of a talented young man that had all of this pain and suffering put upon him before being killed. The power of further pain and injustices suffered by the black community as a whole is focused through the telling of the story through generations and takes the form of Candyman. He may have been a real person in the past, but I think that he is just energy in the Candyman's form because that is what the people believed he was. And at the end, Helen killed him (it) by allowing the people to see her defeat him and giving her life to save the child, therefore destroying the communities belief in him and creating belief in Helen's tragic story. That is why she comes back at the end. The energy from the story is not destroyed, but has now taken the form of Helen. This is just my take though. Thank you for the entertainment, Good Sir. Cheers!

One of her neighbors had to call the manager to drill a hole in the lock to get in and see what the fuss was about. It worked incridibly with the birdview images of the empty streets of the city and the movies carries quite a lot social commentary, from how the academic world treats the plight of the poor (especially non-white poor) to class and housing.
Quite a lot of punch with a very good horror.

Ironically Virginia actually was hypnotized when Candyman first appears in the parking garage as the director and screenwriter didn’t want Helen to scream like most horror female leads do. And the mirror jump scare was also real as Virginia didn’t know Tony would pop out; ever the kind professional he apologized to her afterwards for scaring her

Candyman scared the crap out me when I was younger. I had kind of forgotten about being terrified of it til I saw this video recommended. I hated being around mirrors as a kid. Especially in the dark. Plus the music and the feel of the movie just creeped me the hell out. Now that I think of it this movie is probably in the top 5 of movies that scared me lol. I was always susceptible to horror movies growing up ever since I first saw A Nightmare On Elm Street when I was 6. So that just started of a chain of trauma that kept going up into my teens lol. Thanks horror movies for scarring my childhood and giving me a nearly endless stream of nightmares and night terrors lol. I'm glad I'm an adult now and don't have to deal with that crap anymore lol.

A fantastic film with an absolutely great cast and the soundtrack is one of my all time favourites. Also, the scene with the bees coming out of Tony Todd's mouth? Those were real bees. Specially bred to have weak stings, but still real alright. Virginia Madsen was also allergic to bees and had to have a medical unit on scene just in case she had a bad reaction to them. Good amount of dedication from the both of them there.

"They found her friend dead in the living room. Man, that name has never been more ironic."
That's how it got the name living room. It used to be normal to have wakes at one's home in the parlor. There was a bit of a social campaign to not do that, and they started saying that the parlor was a room for the living. Thus it changed it's name to the living room.
