Hostas are EXTREMELY hardy! I took some from my mothers garden in Vermont to plant in mine and I realized I took too many, so a threw a bunch in the woods directly behind my house. A year later, I go out to where I dumped them and they were still alive with new spring/summer growth! This was after a whole summer, fall, heavy snowfall and cold winter and another spring! So I gathered them up and found a place for them.
i took some from my garden and it was practically dying from being eaten by bugs! I got rid of them and now it has a couple of leaves and is growing fast!
Oh..yes! I love them in pots! They are beautiful... I have to start over again in buying them because I moved and couldn't keep most of my plants. I bought the dark leave one with a white line on the border of the leafs. I have divide when it was tiny into 3 plants right away just in case it dies I have two more. Definitely keep them in shaded areas. NC can be to hot long summer months for them.
Lady Garner must not have deer roaming her area, otherwise she'd just be feeding them luscious Hosta Salad. All of my hostas were in pots, until they got chewed to death by deer, despite the chicken wire I had around them. It's nice to see beautiful hostas even if I can't have them in my own yard because of deer.
Hostas are just great and one of the easiest plants to grow and propagate for the garden. They're extremely hardy and indestructible! Over the years I've been gardening here in NJ, I've never lost one, and with so many new varieties, I'm using them in places where other plants have failed. One in the back border garden is huge, almost five feet across!
Haha!! We just divided many of our 5-6 year potted hostas using a saw just like that one. Its the first time Ive done it that way and I wasn't sure if it would harm the thick, woody root ball. I guess not!
Hosta shoots coming up in the Spring can be harvested with a SHARP, thin bladed knife, and baked lightly, fried lightly, and even blanched and frozen, for later cooking. Even the more tender leaves, can be sauteed in olive oil, butter, or bacon grease, as you prefer. The lovely thing about hostas is that they are hardy, and plants from which you harvest, will come right back as long as the roots aren't destroyed in the process. Shade tolerant, they can be grown in wooded areas, HOWEVER, deer tend to like them as much as people do. Cooked, they have an asparagus-like flavor, but are much easier to cultivate than asparagus. The cooked shoots are considered quite delectable in the Orient.
I love the big clay pot she has! Have you ever seen the white ones with a bit of light green at the start of them? Some nurseries carry them online. Just beautiful! 😏
Waw, they are great!!!!! Could you please give the names of the Hostas that you are showing in the video ? and what fertilizer you use to grow them. Thanks in advance.
Ух и энергично же она действует ножом))) Бац,бац! Пересадили! Ну горшок конечно мал для кусочка отрезанного! Но как вариант деления весьма достойно! Браво!
I love hostas! I also have mine in pots and they are doing great. I don't want to take a chance since I am not sure how they would do in red clay in Georgia.
Dig a nice size hole and add good soil. I too have hard concrete clay. Make sure it is in a shady area and it's in a sprinkler system area of your garden. Or simply plant them in pots. They are simply beautiful by themselves since their rooting over takes the pot as you see her on the video cutting the invasive roots. Yes they can crack a pot.
But what happens in the winter? Where I live, it freezes a lot. any moisture in the soil will crack the pot and I wonder about the hostas ability to endure the cold above ground.
I believe the indoor hostas should be kept in a room around 40F during that time, so a room not used or a room not frequently heated. They go dormant and sometimes leaves fall off, water them once a month. Want to avoid the soil becoming dry.
oh this is so great to know, thanks. I had to remove 5 huge hostas in my garden, I put them in pots for now, but would like to keep them in pots, what about in the winter, if hostas live in the ground throughout the winter, they should survive in pots too right?
Lillian Elliott I’ll leave mine in the pots all year round ! And in the winter I cut them back and put them in the garage and they come back in the spring 😄
Yes they definitely do but they might not survive in pots outside in very cold climates. I live in done 7 & 8 on the east coast. Many annuals outside become. perennials where I live.
The only problem to worry about is that with an above ground pot, you won't have any surrounding ground to insulate the roots during a frost or a hard freeze. If you bury the pots in the ground over winter, it might help them overwinter, otherwise you'd have to keep them from freezing by either mulching or moving them to a protected side of the house that is warmed and retains heat, or just cut them back and move them inside to a garage or a green house or a basement, or other cool but not cold place. Good Luck.
Muy buenas tardes qué plantas tan hermosas cómo se llama esa planta yo soy de Colombia y yo no le he visto y tengo muchos jardín una feliz tarde la felicito tiene un jardín hermoso
Hello i have a hosta got it last year, this time. N I've been watering it all year, can i leave it in the same pot or depot it. It was my first time getting them. Thanks . 🤗
Is it still in the little plastic pot it came in? If so, I would plant it an a much bigger pot. 3-4 years from now it will be three feet tall and 4 feet across. then you can divide it and have four of them to start all over again!
Hostas need 60 days of dormancy to thrive. They go dormant in the winter when it's cold up here in the north, Nebraska for us. Over the long haul hostas don't do well in your growing zone.
Hostas are perennials, they will survive winter and comes back in the spring ,when winter comes you Could dig a hole and place the whole Container inside and remove it at the Start of Spring
It washes away in the rain. iIt raines at night, the stuff washes away, then the deer come and destroy your plants overnight while you sleep. Then you wake up to no hosta and an expensive bottle of stinky juice. I'm trying Milorganite this year. It's not water soluble so it doesn't wash away, It's expensive, but it also fertilizes your plants. Deer pulled up my pansies the very night I planted them and each night after, spray, blood meal stakes, soap, barely worked. I put a wire cage over one side and have been sprinking Milorganite on the the other side, and both rows of pansies have survived since. If I get some more hostas, I'm going to have to drench them in Milorganite sprinkles for them to even have a chance. Deer also ate all the spring leaves off of my Young Fig Tree. I'm a bit pissed at the deer. Eat the freakin grass, dandelions, plantains and clover growing abundantly for crissakes. They make me want to take up bow-hunting.
Maybe you should move it to an outside area where nature will give it water...like snow, rain. Then move it again into the shady area in spring, summer, fall months. I hope it isn't because it is to cold? She said she lived I. The Washington area...that is cold too.
eve ladybug no they are just like like a bulb, they will come back next spring, if they were healthy this spring.! Mine like shade and water every 5 days once they sprout through the soil! Good Luck!
Cutting up hostas is totally wrong! I am cringing as I watch this. The proper way to separate hostas is to take them out of the pot, wash the dirt off the roots and gently peel them apart at the base of the plant. You will have far fewer, if any, deaths.

The only one that dies in the winter in a pot is the lamb ears.
Deer have eaten my hostas to the ground! Any suggestions for deerproofing them?
Big box stores have sprays that repeal deer. They smell bad but work.

Oh my goodness, what a genius idea! I just for some reason think everything in the pots would die because I live in zone 6b.
شو اسم هذا النبات
نبات الهوستا
PS: One word of caution - Deer like them too...
Thanks for answering my unasked question about the deer attractant. I wanna grow a bunch and eat them. Anyone else eating them?.
Hey, there,
Oye que doloroso y cruel se vio al cortar la planta uff
Zone 3 all my hostas in pots died

Why saw?!!! Just tease the roots apart
Seperate Them In early Spring. That is The Best Time People.
damn! that's a good looking woman!!
RIP cheap pot
