      I have five macaws. They are the sweetest kids! However, they do nip if I miss the signs. I don't, as a rule. There are times when the dog will come up on us quickly and frighten them; the bird will correct me for not paying attention!

      Archetype00 I know my parrot missed his owner which I guess looks like my brother cause i think he thought my brother was his original person because he'd fly to him and get all fluffy and kiss my brother he absolutely loved him . Unfortunately my brother wasn't a animal guy. After awhile I think my bird realized my brother wasn't his owner and stopped flying over to him

      buying the bird is probably the cheapest part ! Soo many ongoing expenses and that’s apart from medical bills. If someone can’t afford to pay the price of that particular bird then most likely it seems you may struggle with giving the bird the life it deserves unfortunately. Although I’m sure the bird would not be short of 💕 love, it’s hundreds at least per year I spend on my African grey, (this year thousands with new aivery set up) vet bills toys aviaries perches veg fruit pellets vitamins minerals travel cages, uv lights medical insurance , more toys then more toys , they destroy toys (that is their idea of having fun , to destroy them keeps them busy to avoid boredom which could lead to mental health problems. so they go through so many toys each month at around £20 per toy, I spend hundreds per year on one African grey, this is with a healthy bird with no underlying health conditions.if you are serious about a bird then you need to have money saved up for emergencies because it can easily run in to thousands of pounds with one accident. Please THINK and LEARN as much as possible before adopting a parrot.

      Howzer The man I can’t help but think this could have been avoided and I really believe that Micheal wouldn’t have chose to hold the bird at that point given the choice as he would know she was in a “heightened state” and would have ended up like this, the bird unhappy and Micheal unhappy. He’s the parrot wizard after all he would have read her body language and known but they both had no choice moment in the. I’m sure the gentleman thought he was acting in their best interest though !

    • @arianacardinal7879
      @arianacardinal7879 9 лет назад +9

      I've only been bit by a cherry headed conure once and i didn't feel it at first but then the pain got worse and stays like that for about 30 minutes to an hour. I can only imagine a macaw bite, I am a very experienced bird owner, and can get a macaw if I'd like, but the beak always holds me back. This is why I will never get a macaw, not even the nicest macaw out there, because there alway the potential of a bite!

    • @freedomfighter2668
      @freedomfighter2668 9 лет назад +21

      a macaw will only bite if they are afraid or if you have done something to make it where the macaw thinks she or he has to bite. you have to work with you macaw in order to build trust so the bird will feel safe with you around and wont feel like they need to bite.

    • @arianacardinal7879
      @arianacardinal7879 9 лет назад +8

      +Jacob loose yes I know birds only bite for protection! but there is always the potential of a bite! and I'd rather there be no potential. I only rescue parrot, I never buy from shops or breeders, so all the birds I receive have no trust for humans what so ever! There for when it comes to training, most of the parrots a train reach over and bite me. I know all birds are different but I'd rather take no chances plus I believe these types of parrots shouldn't be owned, I feel this is like owning a pet tiger, some animals should have never been in contact with people and I feel bad that these birds ancestors as they were taken from there home and out in a cage in someone's living room. I know that If a domestic bird were to be release to the wild it would die, which makes me even sadder to know that they have forgotten how to live in there own home.

      I have a blue and gold and a green-winged macaw. The blue and gold will sometimes bite but after being bit either by accident or purpose, you get used to it. Also, it's better to not react because if you do, it tends to make the bird feel dominant over you and that causes even more problems... I love my birds though and they love me.

    Great job not reacting to the bite Michael. Can't say I would have been abe to do the same. lol For someone at at rescue that you would think has pretty extensive knowlege about birds, you would think the guy from the rescue would understand that negative reinforcement doesn't work. The new bird room looks great also. I'm sure Kili and Truman are going to love it also.

    • @ParrotWizard
      @ParrotWizard  11 лет назад +7

      I wouldn't go so far as to say that negative reinforcement doesn't work. The problem is more so that it doesn't work in the long term (either the parrot becomes desensitized and the aversive is no longer stimulating or the parrot bites to avoid the aversive in the first place). In the short term (like at the rescue), getting a not-hungry, not-motivated parrot to step up for positive reinforcement may be impossible while negative reinforcement works immediately. That is why negative reinforcement is still so prevalent... because of short sighted people seeking instant gratification. And that's why so many parrots are screwed up and end up in rescues...

    The greenwing is a great bird. I have a greenwing that is very social and loves to go for a ride in my van. Neckton Bio works wonders with feather quality. Neckton S is a great general vitamin.

      That is normal for them to bite at first with new people. Lots of patients and treats. I had 3 or 4 blood bites from a hand raised youngster i adopted from an owner. Lots of treats, lots of patients. Best wishes from Picasso my greenwing.

    I would’ve easily took the Umbrella Cockatoo that says “Hello” at 0:16 if I was at that bird rescue!!! If that big Green-winged Macaw bit me once, I would’ve probably passed on the Macaw and tried interacting with the Umbrella Cockatoo and other birds they had in the rescue to see if they would bite me while stepping up. I understand that Macaws like to show their dominance at first, but Umbrella Cockatoos seem to have an overall nicer personality and like attention from anyone in the family or even anyone they see, not just their caretaker like most Macaws. I tried holding both birds at a bird store near me that takes unwanted birds in and adopts them out to people and the Umbrella Cockatoo was very sweet and didn’t want to get off of me once he got on my arm! The Macaw on the other hand… didn’t even want anything to do with me and tried reaching his beak out to bite my arm when I near his perch to try stepping up. I didn’t even get a chance to actually hold the Macaw on my arm, but rather on a stick in which the Macaw tried walking up the stick and almost bit my arm, but luckily was near the perch to put him back on before it was too late. I was very calm and didn’t react every time the Macaw tried to bite. I know all birds are different and there could very well be sweet Macaws and nasty Umbrella Cockatoos out there. It all depends on their past and how they were treated/ how much attention they got in their previous homes. I didn’t end up with either bird and bought home a sweet and loving Jenday Conure named Rio. I went for the Conure because I don’t have space for a bigger bird and the Conure was like the Cockatoo, it didn’t want to get off of my shoulder and even gave me some kisses before I even got him in the carrier to take him home. You handled the bites like a pro though by the way 👍

I would be very interested to see when she gets settled how you approach the hardness as im still having issues with my bird as he is stuck in his ways and was not handled very much but we working slow and steady!...x

    • @steamfend333
      @steamfend333 8 лет назад +4

      most of the time it is more at a breeder. at adoption centers they try to get birds adopted as fast as posible

    • @compulsiverambler1352
      @compulsiverambler1352 8 лет назад +1

      It's more that they want to give them good homes. If you convince them you'll be a good human for the bird, they want to offer discounts if that will make it possible for the perfect home. Commercial breeders and pet shops have a profit motive so often don't vet their customers if the customer can pay full price, which is why most birds get sold to either bad homes or homes where they're given up soon for being not what the human expected.

    This is a great video. It's so nice to see someone caring for these birds, I hate that some of them look so broken after what they've been through. Every person I've spoken to who have owned a large parrot always say, " I USED to have," its a shame. I believe the man in the video will make a great adoptive carer for this bird though, he handled those bites like a pro and understood how to react.
