I just want to say; Very good DIY video! Great camera work, perfect angles, informative and just enough talking. This should give any home mechanic enough courage to tackle this job! 😊👍
Great video, thanks for doing it! A few things I found while doing this.. I had to raise the engine further to get the water pump in/out (not covered here but most people will do the pump). Also, it took a surprising amount of effort and jiggling with the tensioner to get the new belt on.
The image actually reminds me of a new Chinese nuclear submarine. Barely two months old and it's glistening in the sun, only the sink in the captains quarters already got rust on it. Pray tell, how this Volvo got to be in such condition? Lots of shiney new parts under the hood, but many rusty components at the same time. For a Volvo to have rust in the wheel arches is exceptional. Cheers for the video!
Oh rust, how you creep and crawl In the wheel arches, you make your sprawl Once shining and strong, now dull and weak Your destruction, the car's beauty you seek But fear not, proud car, for help is at hand With a skilled mechanic, you'll make a stand With tools and knowledge, they'll banish the rust And once again, your beauty will be a must So let us not mourn the loss of your shine For with care and attention, you'll once again be fine And journey forth with pride and grace Rust, you shall not have this place. No but seriously, the car was wrapped before i got it leding to the paint being decent underneath, but it has been vandalized and badly repainted on the hood, and front fenders at some point eventually leding to the rust issue. The sant on the Swedish the roads in combination with 10km dirt roads everyday for the last 4 years just took its right on the car. Saving this one for a video in the future.
I have a D5 from 2011, 205ps version. Later they named this V70 D4 because an upgrade was introduced with the 215ps engine. So the D5 was basically upgraded and the existing D5 downgraded to D4. And to make things littlge more complex, there are also D3 engines both with 4 and 5 cilinders. Yes yes, Volvo does have a somewhat complex identification on their models, but he that is also the case on the later Mercedes-Benz model. For a long time a 280TE was a 2,8 litre engine petrol and the 300D was a 3.0 litre diesel, simpe as that.....if you can recognize the current models by engine type you will be considered as hero ;) D4 and D5 V70's by the way: great cars!
Ok how often timing belt has to be replaced please? I have V60 XC D4 AWD 2017 with 168k kms.. shall I do it now as previous owner never done it. Got car this week - love it but want to make sure all will be good so replace now or can wait as brochure does not say when to replace it.. 😮 thx for a tip! 🙏
had this done a few months ago on a 2014 2.4 d4 awd xc70, problem I have now or it might be a coincidence is my dash lights up like a Christmas tree we every fault, first I get a yellow triangle saying powers steering failure then the radio goes off then brake system failure air bag failure engine failure and a few more, the car seems to try to re boot and I loose the speedo fuel but the dash stays on doesn't go dark, it takes a few minutes to some what settle but sometimes gets stuck in a loop so if I turn off the ignition the interior fans stay on so I have to re start the car and has no problem, once its done a system check I can turn car off as normal, one thing I do notice is just before it plays up the drivers window is so slow and the lights in the door window switch flicker and the heaters go from warm to cold, with all this going on the car still drives fine as in no limp mode still got breaks and steering and engine power. I was told your battery is playing up so put a new one on had the car reset to say its got new battery and was fine for 500 miles then it came back and was told the alternator was playing up so had a new one and did 200 to 300 miles and its back but this time more often, I thought it was mainly due to the weather at 8 degC but not so, I've tried to see if its the aircon module but its not. I'm at my whit's end and don't want to throw more money at it as I'm in for a few grand now, but it all started the same time I had cam belt and water pump done and from what I have read the Christmas tree dash lights are a common fault but no one says how they sorted it. The car its self is a dream to drive and on motor way uses no fuel I can get over 60 to the gallon on a long run and get minimum of 650 miles to a tank. Any help from anyone would be great.
Sounds like a canbus issue, codes all over the place as well? I would check for Volvo technical service bulletins and having a look if anyone of them might mach your situation.
@@BackmansGarage I've just looked up canbus faults on volvo forums and it seems you might be on to something, this is above me so I'll ask the garage that did the cambelt, I've gone round all fuse boxes and all seems OK on that front and that's about a technical I want to get, I just watched a video with a guy plugging a multi metre in the pins shorting things out to check systems 🤯, it's not a DIY job. Many thanks 👍👍👍👍.
@@BackmansGarage thanks man. So when turning the crank to line up the timing mark on the top wheel. The crank timing mark will line itself up as the top wheel aligns?
Never use sealant at the water pumpt, just grease the gasket with grease... easy to remove and no probs.. If you use some sealant, it will bake on and stick as a rock, you will have some fun and remember mechanics mum, he does wrong!!!
Some like it some don't. I think that key is to use as little as you possibly can. But Iam using it less and less just because like you say, it gets annoying one you remove it to have it clean. But then on the other hand a gasket that is infuzed to the part is equally annoying 😄 Ill give the oil a try nex time im doing a paper type gasket and try soaking it for a while.

Just done this job on my 2013 xc70 D5. Your guide was super helpful, thanks for creating it.
Possibly the best diy guide for the cam belt I've ever seen.
Fantastic camera work and explanation of parts.
Well done mate 👏
Great Video. I never even did an oil change by myself, but with this tutorial I think I could change the timing belt 😂

Gotta say, this seems far more easier to do than the absolute hassle it was on my old s70 tdi, 1999 v70 (gasoline) and 2005 v70 d5.
Yes It definitely is.
Enjoyed this very much, thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Bra video, lagt ner mycket jobb på filmningen. Det är ju det en annan observerar mest. Lite mer att skriva bort än på gamla V70, bra jobbat.
Tack för videon, kommer till nytta för mej 👍

Yup, both the tensioner screw and the belt itself can be a bit tricky.
Takker så mye for en så bra og detaljert video. Gleder meg å utføre jobben på min XC70 16 👍😁
Really well explained and demonstrated. Thank you.

The best advice i can give is to call your local volvo dealer and ask, too many variables for me to take a guess.
You should replace water pump. Avoiding to replace water pump you increase chance to doing the same job again in near future.

Are there any known mayor differences to a Volvo V60 2011 D3/D4 5Zyl?
very good job and video
thanks man. is there any reason you didnt use the tool that holds the screw bolts on the harmonic balancer before tightening the 30mm nut to 300nm?
U can, but if you have a ugga dugga then i just use that for loosening the bolt 👍
