- Victor Borge was originally born in Copenhagen, but fled to Sweden once Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II. Victor managed to escape to the United States in 1940 on one of the last neutral ships leaving Europe. While in the U.S., Victor became a famous comedian, conductor, and pianist. In this clip, he is playing a lullaby written by one of his father’s friends. Victor's testimony is featured in the Comcast Days of Remembrance: PastFORWARD broadcast series.

This man loved his wife so much that when she died in september of 2000, he didn't even make it till the end of the year. A true gentlemen. Didn't keep her waiting for long
Dear, dear Victor Borge.....how much I loved and appreciated his performances....No more we'll have and artist like him. No more.....
Such beauty! Thank you, Mr. Borge.
I think he's very sentimental about this lullaby. He said it was his mother's favorite, and she often played it for him when he was a little boy.
+HallieB: I can tell! The gentle way in which he played this lullaby. Very beautiful! I can hear why his mother loved it.
For all his public humour, it was inspired and deeply felt musicianship coupled with a profound humanity that were at his core.
He appears to play this piece with his eyes closed. It's almost as if he is seeing the music in his mind. All of his humor aside, I could listen to him play this over and over again. He was such a master of the piano. When he did take the stage, his humor was clean as well as very intelligent
I have listened to and enjoyed this lullaby many times, and have only now noticed the same thing
He is listening to the music...his muscle memory did the rest. His ears are guiding his hands
i cry
What lovely touch. I miss you, sir.
What a smooth touch this gentleman had!
And, what humour!
Awesome man
A brilliant humorist with the piano as his medium, and what a wonderful way he had with that medium!! A lovely piece of music here clearly played and felt from the heart!!
from "The Piano Files with Mark Ainley":
The great Danish musical comedian Victor Borge demonstrating his absolute mastery of the piano in this filmed performance of a lullaby written by one of his father's friends, Valdemar Fini Henriques.
It is said that Borge wanted to record more 'straight' performances but that his management nixed the idea - a great loss, as the few recordings we have of him playing without his brilliant comedic touches are indeed phenomenal. He studied with Victor Schiøler, a wonderful pianist I've come to adore who was himself a pupil of both Friedman and Schnabel.
Borge plays here with a beautiful tonal palette, a gorgeous singing line, marvelous pedalling, and natural timing - truly first-rate pianism!
Oh, I always wanted to hear this wonderful man play something seriously. I miss you so much.
/Sweden
He played Clair De Lune by DeBussy from start to finish with the same grace and gentle touch he played this song. It's on RUclips.
It is so nice to hear VB playing a piece seriously even though I always enjoyed his humour
On a more serious note (excuse the pun) Victor plays this beautiful lullaby. Please share this with your children & grand children on this peaceful Christmas Eve before going to sleep. I enjoy playing it several times as it helps me to reflect on all that God has given us.

The lullaby brings tears to my eyes.
@@terriwarner8682 Me, too, I think it's the way he plays it!
I am so happy to have met Victor Borge several times in Copenhagen and Odense, Denmark. He was a wonderful person and a fantastic pianist.
he has a delicate touch on piano ...
I miss him terribly.
This man has magic hands. He extracts the most beautiful touch of the piano.
Magnificent pianist. The way he glides up and down the ivory...even at a very old age. Beautiful.
Victor Borge was truly talented. Such a delicate touch, he never brought attention to it too. He must have had an outstanding teacher.
One of the greatest pianists and humans on this planet.
A real musician and he could play anything. Yes, a true romantic in touch and tone.
Old man , I love you .Thank you sooo much for introducing us in eternity s mystery
The world loves Victor Borge and his musical & comedy genius!
what a beautiful piece of music !!!!!!! and what gentle piano playing... !!!
Gorgeous piece, gorgeous playing!
I love the way that he caresses the piano key.
Thank you for sharing this. Victor.Borge was such a talented entertainer and wonderful musician. How beautiful!
Just fantastic how much fill for the music. It just don’t exist. May rest in piece foreaver!!! Greatest piano master of our time
Er war kein Comedian. Er war ein Philosoph....
Schaut Euch seinen Lebenslauf an!
Thank you for everything Victor!
Stupendo! Che meraviglia! Grazie Maestro!
I love you victor borge
RIP
You wonderful man.
Thank you, David Anchel, for posting the Victor Borge playing of a Lullaby by a friend of his father's. Hard to hear the name of the composer of this lovely Lullaby, and the name doesn't appear in the description. I've always loved & admired Victor Borge; brought home from the library, which didn't want to keep it(!), a series of DVDs & 1 CD of his. Listening the other night to his riffing on the Rachmaninoff Concerto #2, i remembered trying to play that when depressed as a teenager (the piece was written under the influence of and dedicated to the composer's psychotherapist) and how I actually wrote out a violin part for the first movement so my father could play it along with me - which he did, once. Decided to write out the other movements too, and have now played them with Dan Hyman. We included the second movement in our June 6, 2020 house concert, here: ruclips.net/video/JIMGtolzDO4/видео.html
Leonard J. Lehrman, I just read in one of the comments above that the composer's name is Valdemar Fini Henriques. No matter how many times I have listened to this exquisite piece, I still get lost within it and find myself incapable of memorizing it. There seems to be so much longing and consolation expressed in such a short piece, and for me at least, it lets the listener down so gently at the end as though on a featherbed to sleep. Gorgeous.
Absolutely beautiful and heartwarming!
Ive only seen his comedic skit before so I thought he's actually a comedian. Glad to learn that he is such a wonderful pianist too
🎼 music from the heart ☔️
I miss you dear Borge !!
That was such a beautiful tune! Makes me wonder why I never heard it before.
its always sad to see the end of an era
Tears tears tears!
This is “Vuggevise” (“lullaby” in Danish) by Fini Henriques, Borge’s favorite piece by him. In his autobiography, Borge said this tune is “forever connected to my home and childhood.”
Priceless
Beautiful!
“ a lullaby” is THE lullaby: Wiegenlied by Fini Henriques. A danish composer and collegue and friend to Victor Borgers dad. Also Victor Borge became friend of the house of Mr. Fini Henriques and the Wiegenlied became one of mr. Borges favorite songs with a special salute to those who were. Here mr. Borge is improvising the composition.
Yust the best ever no matter what Mr Victor Borge always
I've loved this great humanbeen always. What a love he have us, so you can't love back.
Lovely!
Bravo
There is something very similar in Victor Borge's touch and Vladimir Horowitz's. Am I the only one to think this?
shilloshillos I had exactly the same thought! The lightness of touch is identical
shilloshillos
You are absolutely right! Same gentleness, sensitivity, perfect control of sound quality and dynamics. They both could really play the piano couldn’t they!
He was taught partly by Frederic Lamond, one of Liszt's great later pupils, who taught that each new harmony must be coloured by its own correct tone production, and - judging by Lamond's recordings - had the most remarkable control of tone at the keyboard himself. No doubt this tradition is in the background of Borge's playing.
Victor!
🥰
Has anyone found a transcript or pdf of this piece? If so please share
Marc Flores any luck?
@@dub944 I've got it in E minor but he plays in a different tone, much more tender in my opinion
Rick Zig do you a copy available for sharing?
@@dub944 Sure, www.free-scores.com/sheetmusic?p=ajx4EoDR9C
I think piece originally is in E and Víctor plays in A
Does anybody know of this lullaby in sheet music form?
Does anybody know where to find sheet music for this? I can't find it anywhere.
You should seek out his son Ronald Borge you know the one with the Red tie and glasses from his skit. He is likely to have information. Victor Borge is from Denmark. He is a National Treasure there and to the world.
The sound is somewhat muffled because the lid is closed...
I am so proud to me DANISH
Obvious mistakes, but who can be surprised. Very moving. Beautiful.
So the description didn't even mention the name of the composer? How the hell should I know the spelling the name in order to look him/her up!
Fini Henriques
ruclips.net/video/uoQKsSDdoyU/видео.html
How old was he in the video?
Actually, Music chose Borge
Hi all, I have some rare footage with Victor Borge - recorded in his native country Denmark. He partly speaks Danish, but I have applied English subtitles for those parts. This is the playlist (Enjoy!): ruclips.net/p/PLCby7t-aPVUksdwJPSy7ov7-tHibgxC4h
😭
Ich hatte immer gehofft, Hans Liberg wäre ein würdiger Nachfolger. Er hat aber ein anderes Geschäftsmodell.
who is the composer?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fini_Henriques
