Fixing the trim tilt on an outboard motor

  • In this video I diagnose and fix and outboard trim tilt mechanism. This boat turns out to have a faulty electric motor which is fixed by cleaning the armature and brushes. The commutator bars were not making good contact with the brushes due to the brushes being too gummed up for the springs to push them forward. This video also goes through testing the trim tilt relay as well as the activation switch.

You have helped me through a particularly difficult period. Buying a boat is akin to swimming in the shark infested Amazon River. And this one I have has been 1 pharque up after another. But the satisfaction of completing successfully repairs and replacements is great. Thank you.

I remember our old 85 bayliner..Same problem..Mechanic told me on so many occasions he simply cleaned up these motors put them back togather. That was the case with our Trim Tilt Motor..
Now have a 8 HP Yamaha High Thrust motor for my kicker for my Glas Ply boat. We checked everything and indeed it's the motor.
    Thank you!

Second time I watched it to repair the motor. A mechanic in the yard wanted to charge me to do it but I told him I already had it done. Thanks so much. It does get dirty with not even that much use.

Fantastic! I had a 1987 90 HP Mercury that had the exact same intermittent problem. There was not a replacement unit available due to its age. I had to remove teh motor and took it to a Buddy that rebuilt starters and alternators. He cleaned it up like you did and put new brushes in. It worked great after that. I learned so much from watching this video about how to actually check out the motor myself! Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Excellent video and don't be sorry for showing us the motor internals so well! It's actually good to see some electric motors are still serviceable and can be opened easily. Marine life can be hard to brushes and commutators because there is humidity all the time and temperature is changing also. Humidity can make the powder that brushes leave stickier for sure and jam it easily. Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for video, I had Tohatsu M40D tilt not working. Only manage to take out the lower bolt, the upper bolt is STUCK. But did manage to take out everything in pump, valves and clean. It works now not sure if it was air or debries in the system that stopped it from working. Found a good way to take are out, open bypass valve, take off the lower bolt so unit can be usped up and down by hand, remove motor. With motor away you can push it up and down and easily top up oil, there is surprisingly much oil needed if it has been drained, and surprisingly much air. I found that it was when rod was nearly fully retracted the air came out so moving it up and down there was a quick way to get air out.

Here is a added note. When you shut off a generator, or a rototiller, gas power washer, plus any engine pertaining to engines that will sit for long periods of time, try this if you want the valve spring to last much longer which helps with horsepower, pull the pull starter until you feel resistance remember intake, compression, power and exhaust. When you go into the compression stroke this is when both intake and exhaust valves will be closed. Hens forth relaxed spring that will last longer. Oh and thanks Dangar Marine.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  8 лет назад

Yes, that is quite comment because it is so close to the waterline and tricky to fix. Heat is usually your friend here, and an impact screwdriver can also be gold. Use a gas torch to heat the body of the unit around the screw and then hit it with the impact screwdriver. Be careful of any plastic parts and the boat itself if it isn't removed.

I used a feeler gauge between the commutator and brush to slip it back in.

I did check the comments to see if it was mentioned. Question: Is any kind of lubrication suggested for the bearings at the ends of the armature? I happen to have a trim motor apart now. The magnets came loose from the can and I'm about to re-glue them using Loctite 325. Everything else looks fine inside the trim motor but I will do some clean up like shown in the video. Thanks for a great video.

+Brian Smith Hey mate. That's not what my wife says. ;) Sounds like you're problem is either the switch or the relay. Can you hear the motor trying to lift the motor when you hit the up button?

Another great video. i really like the way you take the explanation down to a level so people like me can understand it! Great job!
    another thing.
i have a Yamaha 40Hp form 1999 with a broken tilt/trim, thats obviously why im here, anyways, the pressure release valve/screw is completely stuck, and i have no idea if its "open" or "closed"
i can manualy raise the motor, and that makes me think that it must be open? :)
Any advise would be super! :D

Hi Dangar Stu,I have a catamaran with two 15hp 4 stroke outboards in pods.It has trim/tilt to raise the legs up and down.1 leg on port raises all the way up. The other on starboard raises about 3/4 the way up.Both legs run off the same Hydraulic system. The hydraulic motor labours when the legs are lifted to the maximum up position, and legs won't go any higher. Is there anyway that I can make the SB leg lift higher so that it is out of the water (the same as the Port side)?I have tried locking the Port down lower, but SB leg wont lift any higher.I love watching your Vids and appreciate the time you put in to show the workings!Regards,Stuart.

I actually cut my wires close to the trim motor then I soldered them back up. I guess this is a nono is the wiring removable once you have the motor apart?

Thanks for the vid, very helpful to know the seal is removable and how to get it out. I've pulled the wiper seal from Suzuki Showa unit for a df70-df115. It has the NOK LBI 18x26x4.5/6 double lip wiper if anyone else was searching. Unlike Honda, Suzuki don't list the individual seal on the parts list instead trying to sell the whole resovior for ~$300 instead of $13. I am doing this job in stitu to avoid removing the hydro steering and 190kg of motor. Looks like this Suzuki unit has a drain bung on the bottom to assist flushing the fluid. Will be flushing out the milky stuff with dextron III ATF.

Thanks for the video, it really helped me out since I had no service manual. My only problem is that my motor now works but it doesn't pump. Would the motor close if the male slot didn't fall into the female slot? Or could it be fluid? I'm getting a spinning sound but it kinda seems like it's spinning too freely. I guess you can say it's spinning strong but without the pumping sound. I noticed that yours worked without even adding fluid. I have a 89 suzuki dt115. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
