- From the South Pacific to California's coast, documenting deepwater coral colonies to the peaks of underwater volcanoes, the 2019 Nautilus expedition has spanned six months and hundreds of hours of ROV dives. As we switch our live streams off for the year, catch up on some of our most spectacular sightings to grace our deep sea spotlight--including a whale fall feeding bonanza, ballooning cirroteuthid octopus, new vent fields, and a sinuous, rarely-seen squid.

As a student of marine biology, this really be how it is. Field work is very candid and nerdy. I would love to have these folks’ specific job one day.
It's the dream. My professor got to go to a hydrothermal vent field at ~3600m in Alvin just after he did his PhD and I've never been more envious of a career opportunity
I’m really looking into getting a marine bio degree cause I love the ocean and everything in it, but I also am incredibly thalassophobic. These videos make me want to get over my fear so I can be like them

@@Cairo198 I think you can use context clues to tell I mean it here as a compliment, though you’re right that it’s a complex word with loaded meanings. I suppose it here means “passionate about their field, and speaking about it in a detailed and colloquially scientific manner”.

@@ricardogomez6267 You'd probably be surprised, a lot of people around the world have a lot of distrust of scientists as evil people who collaborate with big government to "control their minds", I'm talking scientists in general here. It's a growing trend of distrust in institutions.
We all know that scientists are literally human beings. But sometimes they seem like they’d be very professional and everything. But this video shows them joking together and shows a more relatable side to these smart people.
Hearing the scientists sound full of awe and laid back is way nicer than hearing a single scientist talk monotone the whole time and showing no emotion.

I've seen quite a few frogfish, they don't look like that, like the guy said more likely a stargazer or a stonefish. It however clearly identifies as a body positive model and I think we should respect that.

@@jonn40853 There is actually light down there, it’s just in a different spectrum than what we land lubbers see! Our eyes are simply not adapted to see in that low of light levels as only some really long wave-form light gets that deep. That’s why a lot of deep sea fish have HUGE eyes. It’s similar to how some nocturnal creatures on land adapt to low light levels by trying to capture as much light as possible :)

It's really hard to gage how large some of these underwater creatures are when your watching them in the vastness of the ocean. There is really nothing to compare side by side so you can tell from this end of watching. I would really love to see a video that goes into more detail on the size of each of these creatures of the deep. Something that would give us a bit of an idea just how large some of these beauties are

That's actually methane gas leaking out! You also see vents of liquid sulfur, H2S , they are hydrocarbons. This people should be explaining the viewers, that this is how crude oil and natural gasses are produced. These hydro vents are all around the world, especially where tectonic plates meet. The fuels that we consume don't come from fossils, including coal, they are all hydrocarbons.

@@ProgrammingP123 Even though it has squid in it's name, it's actually closer to octopuses than it is to squids.
The creature did not think the sub was a threat. It that were the case it would have been in that form as soon as it sensed the submarine coming from miles away. It gracefully and peacefully was showing off its beauty. Most humans tend to forgot the life force behind all matter on Earth is love not fear. This is why scientist are no different than you and me, all they have done is filled their mind with man made words and definitions.
