Probably because they pulled away from the stereo speakers. I'm a big speakerfile on cell phones having front facing stereo speakers. But my budget and my lack of agreement that 750 and up is a valid price for a phone.

Yep stereo speakers, still not pleased about the current pixel 2 none xl that i have as its front facing bottom speaker is not as loud as the top one (it's noticeable)
I believe bottom speaker on the current HTC phones is basically like Samsung so don't really have any interest in them (top speaker is treble only, bottom down facing does base and treble)
sony is annoying as they don't actively advertise when the phone they are selling actually has stereo speakers as a premium feature (so each phone I have to check in specs to see if it has it or not and that they are front facing)

I agree. I had the HTC U11 as my daily driver for about a year and loved it. The software was a bit odd but usable, and they introduced the side squeeze feature which has now made it to the Pixel. The mirror back finish was GORGEOUS and the camera was incredible. Unfortunately for me I succumbed to the peer pressure of working in tech as a salesperson and switched over to a Galaxy S9 to match my colleagues. Let my teenage brother borrow it and he broke the screen :’) Heartbreaking. I wish they’d made a U13 or even made the U12 Plus more available here in Australia.

The reason is extremely simple :
They stopped making phones for middle class or poor guys. That's it. Absolutely no other reason.
When it comes to design language, they always evolved and provided great aesthetics but when it came to camera department, they could never do better than rivals and again with that price tag, they were doomed to be obscured.
They tried to ignore the potential buyers and potential market i.e. Asians.

HTC tanked in the Indian market because they continued selling sub-par lower range specced phones at mid- to high-range prices. And when they decided to range it out exclusively in the premium segment, they tried to leverage their brand name into dumping the crappy phones in India at a premium too. In a pre-cheap Internet era this may have gone under the radar, but things had changed. We knew what we were getting before salespeople could try and brainwash us.

    • @chrischoy9
      @chrischoy9 5 лет назад +6

Yeah, that is what HTC is failing to do. In order to make people fork out for a premium, it has to have a name to beat, like Apple and Samsung.
HTC, in most consumer's mind was just another company that made premium phone, but it wasn't viewed as lunxary brand which was it's failing point.
Then you have cheap skates who won't buy anything, but the phone with the best specs per dollar (minus everything else), and they go with Chinese phones that invest all of their money into SOC, ram and screen.
So you have a situation where HTC doesn't fit into those categories.

Your average person doesn't really care about those things though, but the final nail in the coffin is due to a lack of brand recognition. Samsung succeeded by offering something unique, much like what HTC did in the Windows Mobile day whereas HTC was more laid back and generally didn't bother trying to make itself stand out. They priced their phone at a premium, so it wasn't accessible by the more budget orientated consumer, yet it lacks the brand prestige of Samsung or Apple, so naturally, people are going to fork over to those who company leaving HTC into the ruins.

I have an old HTC Windows Phone 8X (2012) that has been sitting unused in my drawer for years. I'm thinking to repurpose it for other use such as running game emulator (e.g. MAME) however I see that this thing has a Snapdragon S4 CPU, 16GB internal w/ 1 GB RAM, and GPU is Qualcomm Adreno 225. Is it possible to install Android on this thing replacing Windows Phone 8? Or can I run MAME using either OS? I have already ripped off the case as it simply wasn't powering on even though I tried charging first. I don't really care if it breaks or not as it's paperweight so I don't see why not explore the possibly of things that I can still use it for otherwise I don't see any point keeping it any longer.

Mainly because of too much competition and poor sales it can also be blamed on the amount of hit or misses HTC has had over recent years. Most people would rarely go with HTC and much rather go with Samsung or apple there are many factors as to why htc hasn't been doing good in recent years

I never bought a HTC phone but always loved using them when my friends had it..They had a unique personality separating them from the rest of the phones with advanced features like enhanced sound, feel etc..The reason I never bought one for myself was because of the lack of good battery life compared to the rest of the phones in the similar range..They just couldn’t manage to make a phone that will last a day comfortably..

Here's a tip for HTC, instead of copying that godawful glass back rainbow color design, go back to industrial aluminium design and make the phones compact with a bezelless display, you'll stand out right away. Sometimes I don't know how these smartphone designers find jobs.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I bought the m10 or 10 3 months after launch for 99.99 on a 2 year contract. I'm typing on it right now. By far and I mean it. Best phone I have ever ever used. It still lasts me all day. It's built like a tank. The camera is still awesome. The display. The dac is unbelievable in the headphone Jack. I can honestly say I don't even desire a upgrade. After 3 years thats saying something. Phone still runs marshmallow. And it still is fast I am blown away to be honest. So underrated.

I always wanted the HTC m7-m9 just for the looks alone, I think they are still hands down the most attractive smartphones ever made, but I never got one back then mostly for the camera. I ab absolutely love taking pictures and HTC's shitty cameras were enough to make me stay away, if they had just fixed that and got their marketing together I think they would be in a much different place

My first smart phone was the HTC Evo 4G, it was fantastic, then I pre-ordered the M7, it had the dreaded dead speaker, and the mic died, I then bought the M8 for both my wife and I, they both fell apart faster than I could repair them, and all these phones lived in cases and were babied. HTC lost me after that. The quality wasn't there, neither was the value. I don't even look at HTC phones anymore when I am shopping for a new device. It's sad because I loved their sense UI.

I remember the early HTCs sold under various brands in the early 00s, they were the norm when it came for a proper smartphone at that time, aside from Symbian powered ones. The One M7 was a good device with a terrible camera that developed that nasty pink hue as it aged, making the device unusable.

Quality issues for me. I had an HTC which kept auto dialing the emergency number even when the screen was locked in my pocket. Didn't the bulk of HTC's mobile division get picked up by Google? I remember hearing something about that, that Google took over one of HTC's campus' and turned it into a huge research center in Taiwan (for things like the Pixel, etc)

For 2-3 years HTC, Sony, Motorola, and Nokia need to put their best into future devices and price them very low at launch just to get their name back out there, then slowly increase their prices. I don’t mean cut corners at all, when I say their best the cameras, display, battery, hardware, and software need to beat anything out there. No more gimmicks!!!

HTC did invest heavily on the branding in the similar matter how Sony viewed itself. In HTC's situation however they did release shit that people did not seem to be wowed over. For example, HTC attempted to enter the tablet game a bit late and when it did, the tablet was the first and last device.

  • @meson183

All HTC need to do it return to their signature full metal unibody, include high quality front and rear high pixel count cameras, all on a modern high performance 64 bit platform with 8GB RAM and storage options of 64GB and 128GB in all markets. Include a minimum 4000 maH battery. Make them in black, white and gold.
Forget the squeezing rubbish. Forget wireless charging. This would be going back to their previous biggest success (the M8) with modern specs and fixing the deficiencies (the cameras). Instead of their UI, use vanilla android. No bundled apps apart from the elements of their UI that can be made into their own apps and widgets. Otherwise play the whole thing with a proverbial straight bat.
It's straightforward, simple and back to basics.

As a Samsung user now, I do agree with the HTC fanboys back then.
Samsung phones of that era had laggy bloated touchwiz software on top of everything, plus it's cheap and nasty plastic housing that squeaks when any rotational force was applied to it.
It's not like the premium glass on metal sandwich of the S6 that we have today, or OneUI (touchwiz) that offers a clean, unintrusive, yet innovative, thoughtfully design.

Which I also liked and had for about 2 years. But when my kids upgraded to the next version (imI forget which it was) that had the slide keyboard they had so many problems that when it came time for me to upgrade again I didnt want to chance a problem phone so I went with Samsung. My first “true” smartphone was the Evo 4G way back in 2010. I had a choice between that and the iPhone 3G. I then upgraded to the EVO 3D, Evo 4G LTE and then m8 before switching to the note 5 when it came out. Had all major note releases up to the Note 8. Still have the phone but switched to the iPhone X as my daily driver. Kind of sad but I don’t see HTC making it this year. They are like Kmart and Sears. Still around but barely holding on
