It’s fascinating that they made sure the game loops properly at level 99 so you can play forever, but they never actually play tested all the levels, missing the bonus timer overflow bug that blocks progress at level 22. I love this stuff.
This game is so hard, no one ever was able to test it at these high levels. And no one ever thought that there would be a godlike player to get there.
@@vaderbase the difficulty levels off at level 4 or 5. It's just a matter of being able to survive that many boards.

Wow, this was amazing! It’s hard to believe a game player could ever be this great. Unbelievable.
I think the most I ever scored when I was a 13 year old back in 1982 was about 35,000 points. I must have spend at least $500 in quarters that year.
Still one of the hardest arcade games ever devised.

This is really impressive to say the least. You know what would be a different take on a world record? How about the FASTEST TIME to reach the kill screen, getting through each level as quick as possible. Maybe this exists somewhere. If there is such a recorded game, please reply, that would be fun to watch as well.

Did you also ever notice just how strange it is, to be having the 'Jeopardy' TV game show studio completely entirely empty? If you'll notice Alex Trebek could've retired, instead of kept on going. He's not the former KTVU channel 2 newsreporter anchorman, Dennis Richmond who has chosen to do the right thing, and that's retire at the right time. 🎙 😳 🤔

Where most of us Donkey Kongers see an obstacle to evade, this cat sees something to chase downstairs to jump three more times and then bash with the hammer. NICE! 👍

Omg, watching this i was totally blown away, this guy is good. I live in Texas and occasionally i go to FREE PLAY (Biggest arcade in Texas). But ive never thought about doing this. I am totally amazed by his skills

Arcade world record with Hammer allowed is 1272800 by Robbie Lakeman in 2021. I wonder if it is even possible to calculate the "physical border" of scoring

Just noticed that a triple barrel jump, which according to the onscreen scoring is supposed to be worth 800 points, is actually only worth 500 points.
I have to get a machine ..back in the day me and a few friends were sniffing around the all time high scores all the time ..Once you get the patterns down Its just a matter of hand eye cordination . we would play for hours on end until we got bored and handed the game off to a kid that was waiting patiently. also we used play the game on mind altering substances just to make it more challenging 😂 good times

They have a cheat code that fixes the killscreen however that wouldn't be organic he could of made it higher if he kept jumping over donkey kongs feet at the last level before the kill screen I estimate about 1.305 mil because 200 or so points per tick of the bonus.
Suntop Kin Seeker True. I have the fixed rom as well but I think that one of the great things about DK is being able to point press and take more risks. If there was no killscreen then people would just run boards for as long as they can with minimal risk and minimal skill required.
Suntop Kin Seeker He could not continue pressing points next to kong because the firefox was there threatening. The bonus goes down by 100 each time so even if he could have safely pressed there we would only see an extra 2000 or so points not 100,000 extra.

Anyone know how many points it is possible to get before the killscreen? I can't imagine the world record being beatable for that much longer.
9:06 - is the hammer worth it? Takes 8 seconds (loss of 800 points) and you only get 300 points. Or do you have to get it to clear a level?
The hope was to snag all the enemies on the right so that it was safer to point press next to kong but unfortunately it did not work out as planned as the enemies continued to evade the hammer.
Awesome job man. I currently holding the record on the arcade machine in my state at 39,000. Thing is it is a patched version of donkey kong 1 so many things are different like the glitch by jumping by donkey kong u can't do and different patterns on the springs. But u r a monster. Congrats
Hmm interesting patched version. So there is no glitch by jumping by Kong. The programmers designed the game so that if you are holding left or right when you reach the apex of your jump it scans a larger area under jumpman for items that can kill you and awards you points. What state do you live in?
DonkeyKongGenius i've seen this too at the "Game State" arcade in Eindhoven (Netherlands) they used to have the original US donkry kong, but after they renovated, they got a patched version too, i used to score around 50.000-60.000 on the original (on my best) but now, i can't even reach 20.000!

I learned a lot from this video. I learned I need to jump barrels and abuse them for points a lot more... that's probably my biggest weakness. Also didn't know about point pressing the elevator stage! I still need to master the spring timing... Do you watch the first bounce of the spring for where it lands? How are you dodging the springs while also looking for the proper spring to go on? This always screws me.
Finding what works for you is hard but it will require lots of save state practice to get it right. Try watching only the springs and then try only watching mario, etc. Try different standing positions, different timing to run for the ladder, try the half retreat. Try all of it! When the emulation is perfect, it is the same. But not all emulation is perfect and proving it is can be a pain. In relation to record runs, cheating on original hardware is far, far harder than cheating on emulators where save states and input playback exists. So, you typically see emulation runs as their own category to keep the two separate.

If you were to compare it to someone like Steve Wiebe, he didn't lose his first life until like level 12...

For some reason I cant hear the sound of Jumpman walking nor can I hear the sound of donkey kong jumping in the beginning, does anyone know the problem? It works of other MAMES but not on the wolfMAME for some reason :/

mike hillis At one time Dean Saglio was asked by Walter Day what possible score could be one get if 100 of him were to play nothing but DK for 5 years. The reply I recall was about 2.15-2.2 million I think. I could be mistaken about that figure. Now if one were to max out each board with the best possible RNG with save states, I would imagine that is what he had in mind but perhaps it could be a tad higher. Though keep in mind that 1.2 million on Donkey Kong is already pushing the limit because of the limitation of the L22 killscreen. What is my highest score doing the saving/loading as you have asked, well, I have not tried personally, nor does that interest me honestly.

@upplsuckimcool16 someone could easily save after each round as mame allows save states and play all the clips together. Also your supposed to use the original controls as those provide limitations.
+EXPLOSIVEEGG In this case we have the entire inp and wlf files for play back to confirm entire game, settings, and rom set used. One could use arcade controls with mame such as in the case of a mame cab but it has never been required.

On the L2 rivets, I wanted to see what he does if the 2nd 🔥 went up the ladder when he was humping kongs leg... but he got lucky it went up the outside ladder to join the other 🔥

It has four different stages. Level 1 only has 2 of them. Level 4+ will have all four.
On the nintendo nes version I got to over to level Z level z in donkey kong is hard.

Its the killscreen. A bug in the code causes timer on L22 to be too low to complete the board.

The first barrel board on level 22 has a bug in the gaming code. This is called the Killscreen. So named because the kill code kicks in only seconds after the board begins making it impossible to beat.

This is called the killscreen. Some arcade games had a level you could reach but not complete, like the final split screen on PacMan. There was a bug in the code that caused a shortened timer on L22 so it was impossible to beat the level.
@@CLChambers00Gaming The Pac-Man kill screen occurs because the binary values are full, all 8 digits read 1 and seeing as there isn’t a 9th digit the game can’t go any further. It’s why Pac-Man has an objective perfect score where Donkey Kong still has the potential for a better score.

Level one only has one barrel board and the rivet board, it isn't until level 4 I think it is before you see all 4 stage types, unless you play the JP rom version that has all 4 each level and that only once.
@@CLChambers00Gaming - Yeah I watched a bit more, it's level 03 when the other screens appear. Cool way your getting every available point before the timer runs out.
I remember getting to the kill screen with 570,000 on the original arcade machine when I was 14 back in the 80's but I never thought about hanging around collecting more points before finishing the screen.

@@WinrichNaujoks - Most arcade machines were only 10p a go so it didn't cost as much as you'd think. I was playing it about ten times a week, every week for about a year so probably ended up spending about £50 to £60. One go used to last a long time though, usually score around 200,000 to 300,000 points so I got plenty of practise for 10p. Donkey Kong was one game where I could get in the 'zone'.
Mario Seems To Be Walking A Bit Faster Then In The Game, Including The Barrels, The Fireballs, But Not DK. Knowing This Was Posted In 2014 It Could Just Be Sped Up A Tiny Bit Just By The Capture Card But I Assure You It Doesn't Sound The Same As It Normally Did. Of All Due Respect, This Could Just Be Me. You Can Compare Them And, Just Try To Tell Me But This Could Be A Push To Knowing This Is A Run With Cheats.
