This was on of my fathers favourite pieces, he played the record on Sunday mornings. As a child it stirred my imagination, especially around Christmas time. My Father died peacefully in his bed last week aged 88.
A long time ago, when I was around 13 years old, my Dad passed away and I became an orphan and went to an orphanage because I had no other relatives that could take care of me. When I turned 18 I left the orphanage and felt completely lost. No money, no job, no perspective. In my own city except for social workers I didn't know anyone. And I came back to live in the same old apartment where I used to live poor with my father. I remember him skipping meals and pretending like he is not hungry just so he could put more food on my plate. Then soon one day I came across a photo - it was me standing in front of our building smiling but with my hand out trying to tell the person who was taking the photo not to do it, but I was clearly happy. And I tried so hard to remember when the photo was taken and who took it but I just couldn't. When I listen to Satie I always think about that photograph and that boy, I am now almost 32 years old and Satie's music makes me dream of having a conversation with my younger self. I would love to tell that boy that it's ok to cry, it's ok miss your Dad so much that you don't won't to share that feeling with anyone, you want to keep it to yourself, that it's ok to feel lonely. I would love to tell him all that and much, much more..

Whoever had the genius idea of combining Gymnopèdie with Eduard Cortes’ paintings, deserves to win the Internet. There are now enough of these videos for it to be a thing. Cortes’ lived a long life and I love how you can see the growth of Paris through his paintings; from horse drawn carriages to sleek 1950s Buicks. If you look closely, in almost every picture there is a woman and a young girl (who grows into a young lady in later pictures) waking side by side. They were his wife and daughter. I had the pleasure of visiting Paris for the first time last summer. I was excited, but having heard so much about it all my life, I expected it to be nice but underwhelming. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I absolutely loved Paris. And contrary to the stereotype, the vast majority of Parisians were lovely people. Thank you Satie, thank you Cortes and thank you for to the righteous people on RUclips for posting these beautiful collages. It makes me think of the city I’m now in love with.
It was me ! No, seriously, it wasn't, but I did have the idea of putting Mark Rothko's paintings in chronological order to the music of Tchaikovsky's 4th, 5th and 6th symphonies, ending with pictures of his flat taken by the police murder squad investigators.
Erik was his whole life alone and died alone... he HATED when people were listening to his music as he was making it to be played in a background to enhance the mood ... but this one feels like personal piece of his loneliness and sadness being alone, heavy drinking while his life went thru his fingers..
This music is featured in the documentary “Man On Wire” about Philippe Petit walking on tight rope between the 2 WTC towers in 1977. Movie is about Philippe’s passion and how he fell in love w the process itself, mastering the craft. Him and his close friends dedicated years to this task and the masterpiece was when he walked between the WTC towers. It’s about achieving your full potential, that inside u know u were created for this, and how it can be a spiritual experience. It’s about fulfilling ur “purpose”. Philippe and his friends fell in love w the process rather than focusing on the outcome itself. Finally when they saw it come to fruition and how much awe and inspiration it created, they were overcome w joy and a spiritual awakening. It’s also about how he fell in love w the WTC towers. Gymnopédie No. 1. Such beautiful music. May we all find our passion one day. R.I.P. to all that were lost on 9/11. 🙏

I think the greatest virtue of classical music is that unlike a van gogh or a monet .... these priceless works of art composed by the hands of sheer genius ..... cannot be auctioned off to the wealthiest bidder leaving only a privileged few to enjoy a great masterpiece in its original form. It evokes a fascinating emotion. It’s not precisely happy, nor is it sad. It’s neutral and pensive sounding. It’s peaceful, yet has a slightly haunting quality to it. April 16, 2022, I was in Paris. I wandered through its streets and walked to Montmartre, the neighborhood where Erik Satie was born and lived. His house is still there, and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic when I remembered these pieces in my head.
Interesting how this makes so many people sad. I just feel peaceful and in awe of Satie. I can imagine playing this on the piano and feeling the music in my body.. it's amazing. I just feel humbled

I assumed it was at least a century old BUT I still relate to it as "new" as far as remarkable classical music goes. Tchaikovsky is the same late era (all the nutcracker songs, etc). I personally don't know any household classical music that has come across AS deliberately unique, catchy/memorable and universally impactful SINCE this era (late 1800s/early 1900s). To me it is modern. To bach & beethoven, it prob sounds like mumble rap
This makes me feel as if I am on the streets on a winter morning sitting on one of the benches looking at people passing by each one of them have a different life they are different they are complex they each have their difficulties and things that make them happy It's a weird feeling but it's nice
The Strange thing about the Gymnopédies is that it's meant to be background music; heard but not listened to. Satie was actually annoyed when people started listening to his playing in a café (I think) and so only wrote a few, as to him, people didn't appreciate it in the right way

In his day, his advanced viewpoint was at the cutting edge; few apparently could understand it, so avant-garde was it. At this moment in history, we today have been pummelled by many global events in our lifetimes, viewed from our own living rooms - events that have rendered us needful of his insight. I think I should have said that no man is a prophet in his own land - and in his own time. We need his perspective today, more than ever before, if only to cope with today's pressures. Today, his output for us has become less avant-garde, and more chicken-soup healing, in a way that would have amazed even himself.
This piece feels like silence. It quietly and gently covers the vulgar sound in life like cars on the street, knifes on a plate, gum chewing and other comon stuff, alowing for a peaceful appreciation of the beeing. It also sums itself, beeing ever-present. It's like air: It's needed, its full and ever-present.
So are we! When I heard the first notes I was drawn into a state of internal peace and tranquility! It never cease to bring the same emotions over and over! A piece of heaven on a musical sheet! 😊

The scenes of La Belle Époque by Edouard Cortes shown here are EXACTLY what come to mind whenever I've heard this. Melancholic, distant, contemplative, and somber, but simultaneously shimmering, alive, serene, and wonderfully, impossibly warm.
I used to listen to this religiously when I lived in Las Vegas. In a way it's kind of like Paris (it even has it's own "Paris"), the bright lights, the cultural aspects, the decadent food and night life. I don't live there anymore, sadly, but this piece, especially the last part, makes me feel so happy that I had the time there that I did. I know I'll never relive that time again, but as long as I have the memories, I'm so content. Sweet memories that I'll cherish forever.
Some people listen to this beautiful music and feel melancholy about nothing in particular. But for many of us, we listen and know exactly how much we have lost. True joy is a profound remembering; true sorrow also.

So much time has passed me by, and yet, with me has stayed these brilliant works. I first listened to Satie's music in the sixth grade and was instantly struck by the unique and beautiful sounds of his compositional style. Nearly seven years later, here I am, in my senior year of high school, still admiring this brilliant music, as many well beyond my lifetime surely shall.
That's exactly how you are supposed to feel. Trust your feelings. So much time has passed by us all. Time the final arbiter. The clock is ticking. Admire it still.

This is like no other classical song out there. Minor music in classical music is always seen as sad, as in the crying type. For me personally this captures depression, and I dont hear that from many other classical pieces. It's strange for some it is depressing and sad, and for others it is calming and peaceful. Long comment, but wanted to get it out there.
I guess it depends on where you stand in life. If you are up everything below you is down and vice versa. Personally this piece resets me emotionally and brings me back to zero, I feel as if the emotions inside me are interfering with each other to stop the ripples and bring me calmness i don't very much experience anywhere else.
it modulates, modally and is chromatic. it gives the piece a ''mental'' hue i think reflexion is hard to depict sonically. brooding or thinking but with emotion soul hes both a natural and a genius
Over 130 years ago, one afternoon in Paris, somewhere amongst the avenues and boulevards, there was a moment of beautiful stillness. Everyone who was there is now long dead, but we can experience that moment still .... imperishable.
I listened to this while looking at old pictures and conversations on messenger from 2009, it feels so weird, i ended up crying and really wish i could turn back in time, things arent the same anymore
I don't know who's performing these pieces but I've listened to many other artists interpretation of Satie and this set is by far my favorite. The gentle increase and decrease of tempo makes me feel like I'm walking in the park pausing every so often to notice something.
Takes me back to my childhood of beauty and wonder.... An easy afternoon during my summerholydays, in a garden, lying under an appletree and staring at the different shapes of clouds mooving before the illuminating sun ☀. 💖

No me imagino a una mariposa rodando las cuerdas de un violín. Las gimnopedias son obras para ser tocadas exclusivamente en piano. Dejando a salvo, por supuesto, las versiones Orquestales que hiciera Debussy de algunas de ellas y que fue lo que permitió se conocieran.
Cuando escucho esta canción mi mente se transporta a otro mundo, donde lo superficial y la vanidad no existen, me quedo inmersa en las notas, en el profundo significado que estas transmiten, en este mundo en el que me encuentro existe el amor más allá de la apariencia, los sentimientos puros, amores que duran para siempre, la muerte se convierte en un acto insignificante para el amor eterno. Classic music from whole europe is relaxing af. Bach, Mozart, Bethoven, Vivaldi, Satie, Debussy and many more... I really love them all. That was art back in that time.
Interesting you mention them all because they are so different. Im a huge fan of impressionism and stuff like satie and debussy but not a huge fan of Beethoven and other classical composer. They are great for sure it is just subjective about my taste. I could listen to impressionism for hours but classic is not mine.

The artwork is by Édouard Cortès. The fact that there's so many uploads of music on youtube and barely any of them mention or credit the paintings used makes me sad. Goes to show that painters and artists still get no love or respect, even to this day.
This video used motivate me when I was studying in college where lessons were in French in Turkey. Then things went not as planned and I was stuck in a shit job with no future. After all, I was accepted into a master degree and I'm coming to see the glimpse of what is left of those images now. Thanks for merging these images with this music. It gave me hope at a very fundamental point in my life.

I had the pleasure of visiting Paris for the first time last summer. I was excited, but having heard so much about it all my life, I expected it to be nice but underwhelming. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I absolutely loved Paris. And contrary to the stereotype, the vast majority of Parisians were lovely people. Thank you Satie, thank you Cortes and thank you for to the righteous people on RUclips for posting these beautiful collages. It makes me think of the city I’m now in love with.

Erik was his whole life alone and died alone... he HATED when people were listening to his music as he was making it to be played in a background to enhance the mood ... but this one feels like personal piece of his loneliness and sadness being alone, heavy drinking while his life went thru his fingers..

This music is featured in the documentary “Man On Wire” about Philippe Petit walking on tight rope between the 2 WTC towers in 1977. Movie is about Philippe’s passion and how he fell in love w the process itself, mastering the craft. Him and his close friends dedicated years to this task and the masterpiece was when he walked between the WTC towers.
It’s about achieving your full potential, that inside u know u were created for this, and how it can be a spiritual experience. It’s about fulfilling ur “purpose”. Philippe and his friends fell in love w the process rather than focusing on the outcome itself. Finally when they saw it come to fruition and how much awe and inspiration it created, they were overcome w joy and a spiritual awakening.
It’s also about how he fell in love w the WTC towers. Gymnopédie No. 1. Such beautiful music. May we all find our passion one day. R.I.P. to all that were lost on 9/11. 🙏

I think the greatest virtue of classical music is that unlike a van gogh or a monet .... these priceless works of art composed by the hands of sheer genius ..... cannot be auctioned off to the wealthiest bidder leaving only a privileged few to enjoy a great masterpiece in its original form. And THAT is no little thing.

April 16, 2022, I was in Paris. I wandered through its streets and walked to Montmartre, the neighborhood where Erik Satie was born and lived. His house is still there, and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic when I remembered these pieces in my head.

When I heard it, to me it sounded something Thelonius Monk or Dave Brubeck would play.
I assumed it was at least a century old BUT I still relate to it as "new" as far as remarkable classical music goes. Tchaikovsky is the same late era (all the nutcracker songs, etc). I personally don't know any household classical music that has come across AS deliberately unique, catchy/memorable and universally impactful SINCE this era (late 1800s/early 1900s). To me it is modern. To bach & beethoven, it prob sounds like mumble rap

The Strange thing about the Gymnopédies is that it's meant to be background music; heard but not listened to.
Satie was actually annoyed when people started listening to his playing in a café (I think) and so only wrote a few, as to him, people didn't appreciate it in the right way

I used to listen to this religiously when I lived in Las Vegas. In a way it's kind of like Paris (it even has it's own "Paris"), the bright lights, the cultural aspects, the decadent food and night life. I don't live there anymore, sadly, but this piece, especially the last part, makes me feel so happy that I had the time there that I did. I know I'll never relive that time again, but as long as I have the memories, I'm so content. Sweet memories that I'll cherish forever.
Some people listen to this beautiful music and feel melancholy about nothing in particular. But for many of us, we listen and know exactly how much we have lost. True joy is a profound remembering; true sorrow also.

So much time has passed me by, and yet, with me has stayed these brilliant works. I first listened to Satie's music in the sixth grade and was instantly struck by the unique and beautiful sounds of his compositional style. Nearly seven years later, here I am, in my senior year of high school, still admiring this brilliant music, as many well beyond my lifetime surely shall.

This is like no other classical song out there. Minor music in classical music is always seen as sad, as in the crying type. For me personally this captures depression, and I dont hear that from many other classical pieces. It's strange for some it is depressing and sad, and for others it is calming and peaceful. Over 130 years ago, one afternoon in Paris, somewhere amongst the avenues and boulevards, there was a moment of beautiful stillness. Everyone who was there is now long dead, but we can experience that moment still .... imperishable.
I listened to this while looking at old pictures and conversations on messenger from 2009, it feels so weird, i ended up crying and really wish i could turn back in time, things arent the same anymore

Y lo mejor de todo es que esta Gymnopedia empieza por lento y doloroso, Satie interpreta musicalmente los estados emocionales, te da nostalgia en tú caso vivido la experiencia con él que fue y ya no es, pero ahí esta lo lindo se guarda en el alma yo lo escucho desde mi adolescencia y nunca ha fallado el indicativo de los sentimientos detente a pensar en tú vida y tú mundo, de pronto te falta explorar más, y hasta donde llego tú ser amado te mostró un sitio y un camino distinto ahora sal a romper ese molde y reencontrarte con tu yo interno y vivir sin ataduras del pasado 0 odios, señalamientos, celos sé tú misma desnudate " en el sentido" de que te explores en tú alma, vendrán cosas mejores exitos

Interesting you mention them all because they are so different. Im a huge fan of impressionism and stuff like satie and debussy but not a huge fan of Beethoven and other classical composer. They are great for sure it is just subjective about my taste. I could listen to impressionism for hours but classic is not mine.

This video used motivate me when I was studying in college where lessons were in French in Turkey. Then things went not as planned and I was stuck in a shit job with no future. After all, I was accepted into a master degree and I'm coming to see the glimpse of what is left of those images now. Thanks for merging these images with this music.
