Media Mail Keeps Changing

  • I was shipping out some books today, and it got me thinking about the break-even point between using USPS Ground Advantage and Media Mail for shipping. While it's common knowledge that USPS Ground Advantage is often better for one-pound books, the question is: where does Media Mail become more cost-effective?
USPS Ground Advantage rates are region-based, unlike the flat-rate table for Media Mail, which increases consistently with weight regardless of location. Generally, once your parcel hits five pounds, Media Mail becomes more affordable. This is definitely the case at ten pounds, except for the most local shipments.
Here's what I've learned and how you can make more money selling books on eBay:
    1. **Lot Up Lower Value Books**: Group books by genre or author to hit at least five pounds, preferably more than ten pounds, to take advantage of Media Mail's lower rates. This helps if you offer free shipping and want to avoid high shipping costs for distant buyers.
    2. **Sell Big Books**: Large coffee table books, which are usually more expensive to ship with USPS Ground Advantage cubic rates, can be much cheaper with Media Mail. For example, I once sold a large Time Magazine book, and shipping via USPS Ground Advantage would have cost about $25, but Media Mail only cost around $6.50 for a four-pound book.
For rough estimations, once you exceed five or ten pounds, Media Mail typically costs about a dollar per pound.
I hope this helps you navigate the changes in Media Mail rates and make better shipping decisions. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. See you later!

My local postmaster is now telling me DVDs (as in normal movie DVDs) can’t ship media mail because of the fact there is advertising trailers on them before the movie… we’ve looked at all the online documents on usps site and can’t convince him otherwise.. really pretty annoying for something that should clearly be allowed. Wondering if you’ve ever heard of a post office doing that regarding media mail. Yes I know I can just go to another town but it’s way too convenient being able to drop off a stack of packages before they open in the morning.

Your local postmaster is an imbecile. Find the regional position on LinkedIn and contact them.
