  • This extended Indent, shown on Channel 9 Australia, from 1978 starts off with many Channel 9 Personalities from over the years, too many to name but i do remember the majority of them. The rest of it is a combination of Aussie and American people and scenes. A LOT of the stuff is a direct copy of the USA Version. It even has part of an American Penny in it. (we don't use those here). The same lady knitting a jumper (sweater), The runners with the numbers on their tops, the Still the one blind being shut and the list goes on.
You can compare this with the USA Version shown at the youtube page... • Video
Thanks once again to George Field for providing this to me to upload

I was the Promo Producer at TCN 9 who put the original campaign together for Australia. It was a follow-on from the 1977 "Let Us Be The One" campaign, which brought new animation to tv logos. We did indeed licence the song and versioning from ABC USA (originally from the group Orleans in 1976) getting Bob Abel to do our animations. Nine then re-wrote it and re-recorded it using Australian talent - Geoff Harvey was our music director, with a full studio orchestra. We then went and filmed all over Sydney - the version you are looking at here is NOT the original version transmitted by and made by TCN. Nothing like ! We filmed in 16mm Eastman neg II, and made sure our promo had full cinematic quality, transferring direct from our Rank Cintel telecine. The version shown here is a copy of a copy and with clunky montage at the front, and some quick and dirty editing, (I mean, they've cut out the riff and the key change turning point, for crying out loud). It's not at all the way the original went nor at the quality I would demand. Sam Chisholm, boss of the Nine Network, wanted a new look and pushed me in Sydney, and Melbourne promos, to come up with something within a certain time frame. We at TCN delivered on time, and so GTV had to use our product until they could finalise something for themselves. They didn't like the Sydney references, and that is understandable, nor did they take our on-screen talent. My original network version has shots of surfing, helicopter shots of Sydney, the harbour and bridge, billboards, different people, aerial shots of cars forming the NINE logo, flying over the TCN tower etc. But we DID use USA footage as a base - the knitting and the blind, the champagne bottle and the "1" montage, for example, were edited in. In addition, this was just a prelude to a complete campaign. This was just the intro into what was a 40 minute program put together highlighting our shows and upcoming progs, which was originally meant to only be shown to clients and agencies, but which the management liked enough to put on air as a special event program in its own right. That included a lot more editing of shows, to include Paul Hogan, Mike Willesee, Mike Walsh, and all the talent that came out of TCN in Sydney, along with the series and programs that completed the Nine stable. The campaign included 15-sec idents, radio music spots and a complete revamp of the TCN and Nine network idents at the time, both onscreen and print. Can I also make a public callout to Brian Phillis who was a great director and guiding hand in the edit. He taught me so much. Lew Griffith who was a crazy good video editor, Peter Cox who made the telecine shine, audio king Max Harding, and the late Sam Chisholm the big boss who believed we could do it - and pushed us to do better. It was such a fun time in TV and to be working with great creative minds.

I am So Sick of people using the term "Ripoff" when it comes to Foreign Networks using American ad campaigns (and I'm American). Nine *LICENSED* it; they paid for the rights to do it in their own way with their own singers. Just like how the Seven Network PAID to use some of NBC's ads and Ten PAID to use some of CBS's stuff back then (which is ironic because CBS outright Owns Ten now). Nothing is being stolen here, it's a common business practice. Hopefully that sets things straight.

This was NOT stolen by 9 Ausstralia but paid for and licensed by them from ABC in the USA. You can tell from certain images used, including the USA coin and US $1 bill for pictures of One (1) for the "Still the one" reference.
This was done just like Seven licensed NBC's bumpers and promotional content for Be there, Come home etc.

League Legend In the early years of Australian TV, ATN-7 Sydney was actually affiliated with GTV-9 Melbourne, and that led to GTV-9 airing Pick a Box in Melbourne until the station started affiliation with TCN-9, after which the show aired on HSV-7 for the remainder of its run.
