He is/ was truly an underrated actor, with a pure soul, whom I have admired since I was a teenager. I think it's a travesty that he wasn't even Oscar-nominated for his performance in "My Own Private Idaho," especially since he really went deep into character to the point where it became difficult for him to go back to where he was beforehand (not unlike Heath Ledger when he played the Joker in "The Dark Knight"!). It sickens me that there have been quite a few disgusting people out there who have intentionally mocked his death (including Seth MacFarlane) :,(
He did radiate quite an energy and aura. Man what a genuine bonafide stars he was. His early death robbed us all of limitless art he could had expressed. What a great singer and guitar player/ songwriter and actor. The good dying young rule is bullshit, why would nature take these incredible people away from us and their families and love ones??? 😔
You can call it radiating an energy aura but what it was actually him being stoned out of his mind on blow, meth, heroin, etc. He said it himself in this interview that he was friends with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Do you know anything about their drug using history? And he sucked at guitar. That’s why he blew that Persian brown in the bathroom with the Chili Peppers guitarist the night he died, because he wasn’t allowed to go on stage and play. He was offended and throwing a hissy fit that ended with him seizing out on the sidewalk outside of Johnny Depp’s club. But you’re probably right he was so brilliant and talented

@iaralillylynosjohn Hi again. In 1989 when I met River when his band played a charity event in Gainesville he was a nervous wreck because of all the girls screaming for him. River did not seem okay with it, but he loved his fans and eventually came ' out of his shell'. I think the reason River came over and spoke to me is because he saw a sadness in me that HE COULD RELATE TO. He looked me in the eyes and I could feel a sense of protection. I will never forget meeting him .
TELEVISIONARCHIVES No he’s not, this is not what a ‘high’ looks like. I hate kids who’s never tried drugs who thinks every unique way someone express themselves is because they are ‘high’. River is not high at all here, he’s cripplingly depressed and having some kind of withdrawal from opiates, as we can see from his fidgety and tense mannerism. Withdrawal is worse than a high, all he’s thinking about is how and where to get his next fix, hence all his disjointed statements that goes all over the place. Learn the difference between being high and being fucked up by withdrawal.
The older i get I realize how young River really was its such a shame he was so sad inside I bet he would have gotten through & over his partying had he not passed away, i miss him it was a huge loss
He was highly intelligent, but like many in their late teens and early twenties fall into addictions. I did too and luckily survived and stopped by the time I was 23. He would’ve been as big as Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp today had he not done so many harder drugs.

@@crescendo2441 and even then he turned out to be such a kind and caring person. Drugs were probably his coping mechanism because he seemed to not want to share his burden with other people :(
He comes across as very jaded in this interview for someone so young but then again he had already been in show business for over 10 years. Rest in peace River!
Aw that is incredible..thanks so much for sharing this experience with me… It is hard to picture him hating anyone really..I Can relate to him, about being angry when people are more interesting in gossips then Global warnings, animals and humanity. This interview somehow feels like he was really coming out of a shell, which is wonderful, because the pressure that the media adds can become robotic . Funny how people think that this is not normal when it is the other way around.
Its both a blessing and a curse to care too much. He cared for the humanity and all of living beings and the planet, He wanted to change the world for the better. His heart was way too pure for this selfish, cruel world. River's death is a perfect example of how good people suffer, and how one shouldn't trust anyone so much. Look what John did to him. He killed him.
Actors, in particular, make their living from examining empathy (not to be confused with sympathy) in its purest form; they must mediate on what it's like to experience existence as someone else and in particular circumstances. Why wouldn't an actor's view on social problems, have value? How is being interested in what they may have learned from their own studies, same as worship? Do we claim that those who take in interest in what physicists study, to automatically relegate them to god status?
As much as l love him he was a bit hypocrite about a lot of things too... i mean he was talking about healthy lifestyle and being an outsider of the MTV circle but he was a part of another very hardcore scene in Hollywood, one that was very 'hip' too, that would hang at the 'Viper' and go on drug binges and portray these 'rockstar lifesytle' for young people who obviosly knew they were addicts. I dont blaming him, it was definitely a very hard time for young stars like him in Hollywood he was very alone from a young age in the industry and got lost as any of us would. it was a much hypocritical industry back then than it is now.
Bram van Splunteren (the interviewer) is a pop icon himself. He documented the rise of hiphop culture, the 80s crack epidemic, LA punks in the earliest 80s, the Red hot chili peppers as a very small unknown band up to now, whatever was happening he examined it. Seriously it makes me proud being a Dutchie knowing all that was produced with public funds (that's not so easy these days).
Such a good person at his core and it broke my heart when I found out he died. He was so gorgeous and talented and even more important he seemed like he was down to earth and kind. So very few stars that are down to earth like he was, Keanu comes to mind he's down to earth also, when he dies it will be a sad day also. Hope that doesn't happen for a long time.
Something very cool about River is that he was at the age where you can still hear a hint of his 'adolescent' naivity, but the way he puts it sounds valid, not vain. Him not liking TV because he gets to reflect too much on his work and he doesn't want to be overly aware of his performance, because it will taint. Usually when someone says that, it's because they try hard to be artistic but he actually seems very genuine. It also makes you wonder how many great actors are out there today that we don't get to know because they are so normal and do not get that massive breakthrough
I hear you..sorry for your lost..I also lost a wonderful friend in 2000 she was 22...somehow I feel a huge connection with River and the people who were close to him who until this day is devasted by his loss..I can relate..because once we know that person that makes things around sparkles , and then it is gone..it so intense to lose it..River 's death impacted me more after my friend 's dead in 2000..and I stared to understand things better..
Iara Foschino me too, lost a wonderful soul in 2001, he was 21 and I think of him everyday and maybe that's why I miss River so much too, he reminds me of him
A lot of people are saying he is wearing glasses cus he is high I think he is wearing glasses cus he hates looking at the camera and hiding his eyes probably just made him feel more comfortable
@Dre how would u know? because of the things he's talking about like not liking the camera, thinking hollywood is fake and thinking that hollywood controls actors like puppets?? Listen again, cause River always believed that and he is 100% right
So hard to see River like this. Even with the burn mark on his finger, nodding off Mark? Shame he met these people. As BoB Forrest says in Running With Monsters, River just wasn’t on the same low life aura as the likes of John Frusciante
@klawson211 Yes... agreed.. however, he never wore sunglasses up till this interview... he never wore them in interviews up until the Idaho interviews... when he allegedlly began his opiate use... at this point he wore them very often in interviews even press conferences..
he was battling serious demons and he hated hollywood and fame he thought it was so phony... he was outspoken too very honest... shame we lost him at such a young age and peak of his career
me too..so humble and natural..love him ! This is normal..it is sad to see people here thinking that he is acting "Crazy on "drugs" when he is just acting like him self..Maybe is because he is not acting like the majority of Robotic type of TV trashy interviews that we are used to it..So act plastic and robotic is normal? I know a lot of people who used a lot of drugs just so they can look plastic, robotic and "normal"
It’s because he’s high on drugs and he doesn’t want people to notice especially his fans as he believed it would be quite the bad influence but you may already know that and if so, apologies.
And it's actually very disrespectful that he tries to use the Native American view on getting their photo taken taking a piece of their soul......to hide the fact that he's trying on Heroin!
He is still being honest that Natives practiced not being photographed because it took part of their soul. River never liked the camera or being photographed looooong before this interview but I do agree with you.
Being gawked at being seen as unique or Novel but not respected for it, just of use for profit or pleasure. That's not some cultural co-opting, its shared experience and suffering. The heroin temporarily draws the inner shame from the user to the surface which looks worse to us but feels better to them. Problem is too much use and it stays there confronting us with their shame even when they're still suffering. That's why child stars are no longer marketable as adults and Natives are relegated to reservations with government checks. We don't want to stop using people, we just don't want to have to look at them when we've broken them. Addiction is a symptom, a bad fix for a systemic disease. The problem is we've run out of islands to send the lepers to and now must confront what's causing the spread.
Sorry to be the bad news bearer to everyone trying to be positive here, but let's face the facts. River is higher than the sky here. The sunglasses are to hide his eyes, surprised he isn't wearing a hoodie, he must not have had one. He's hiding behind the sunglasses. And to everyone stating his strange behavior is him "coming out of his shell" and "being himself", yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right. Except he's able to be himself and free under the influence of the drugs. I'm so sad to see this,
Mist Réme dude dont say stuff like that it borders on disrespect... u cant “save ppl” from drug addiction i know u dont say this w malice but that kinda wishful thinking is why we lose people to it. they have to be able to want to be better, to be better. u cant “save him” they have to save themselves the only thing we can do is support them

Rivers downward spiral is apparent here. I get sad. ..he had a hard time. God bless him. He is one angel..
@@actionjackson8439 have some form of empathy Jesus man. this was sickening to read
@@AlekasAttic what's sickening to read are people idolizing hedonistic, drug addicted losers like River Phoenix. Do you know how many people continue to overdose on drugs to this day that look up to trash like this? Change your perspective.
I cant believe that is the same River who acted in Running on empty,Love you to death... still so humble and sweet but it is not hard to understand he had problems :( he so wanted to save all the world but nobody did helped/saved him. So unfear.
Beautiful Spirit. River lives on in our hearts and through his art. ❤❤❤❤
He spoke the truth loved him heaps best actor and truth seeker ever
a great actor of all time in hollywood....
Too bad that he had to die that young
He reminded me a lot of James Dean very cool and down to earth.
He's probably wearing the sunglasses to hide the pinned pupils. :\
who cares if he’s high listen to him. he always wanted to use his platform to spread info on global warming, veganism, and everything that is very important he was a amazing person
I agree well said 👍
He doesn't seem high to me
Ex junkie here. He is absolutely high.
Same. It’s amazing how we think no one knows and you deny and deny but hearing the “thickness of his voice”and body language , is definitely Heroin.
I thought he was so fine on stand by me. I was like wow.
What an interesting interview. Thanks for uploading…
I love his "mine of gold" analogy.. Genius
river died when I was nine years old.even though I never knew him this makes me sad to see him this way.why did no one do anything? out of all well known people who have died since then I've never cried over any. apart from river phoenix. I grieved like I lost a close reletive. strange miss river.
I was 9 too and I remember bawling for days
@iaralillylynosjohn Hi again. In 1989 when I met River when his band played a charity event in Gainesville he was a nervous wreck because of all the girls screaming for him. River did not seem okay with it, but he loved his fans and eventually came ' out of his shell'. I think the reason River came over and spoke to me is because he saw a sadness in me that HE COULD RELATE TO. He looked me in the eyes and I could feel a sense of protection. I will never forget meeting him .
Opulence Phoenix you're a Lucky Girl..!!!
Wow
Opulence Phoenix u are the luckiest girl in the world please tell me what he told u and what he smell like

He's very high in the interiew
TELEVISIONARCHIVES it's so obvious he's high lol it's so funny
TELEVISIONARCHIVES Maybe so. But are you hearing what he's saying? He's gone and people still aren't listening.
🤔 ya think 😂😂😂
🤔 ya think so?? 😂😂😂
Learn the difference between being high and being fucked up by withdrawal.
his outfit is such a mood in this
Love river but even when he pulls his glasses down he shuts his eyes. He knows his pupils are pinpricks because of the smack . So sad :(
damn... the world misses you, River
The older i get I realize how young River really was its such a shame he was so sad inside I bet he would have gotten through & over his partying had he not passed away, i miss him it was a huge loss
I see so much of his brother in him. Joaquin really emulates him.
River was born in 1970. He looks like a little kid here. How time flies.
He was highly intelligent, but like many in their late teens and early twenties fall into addictions. I did too and luckily survived and stopped by the time I was 23. He would’ve been as big as Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp today had he not done so many harder drugs.
I love him so much!!
Ривер был не только талантливым актером, но яркой личностью, общественным деятелем, защитником природы, высоконравственным человеком... Он в наших сердцах!!! .
that movie really messed him up
His parents and their child ra*ing cult messed him up. Most addicts are trying to medicate their childhood trauma.
@@crescendo2441 and even then he turned out to be such a kind and caring person. Drugs were probably his coping mechanism because he seemed to not want to share his burden with other people :(
poverty ridden life, his parents and the pedophile cult messed him up. still he turned out to be the most genuine and kindest soul.
I feel like he became Mike Waters in a way , and never really went back. He felt that role and took it on so strongly and completely.
Anyone who loves him, feels this profound hurt on their heart. He definitely lives on.
“to try to figure it out would ruin it.” really summarizes the heartbreak of it all
😭I’m so sad he had to go through all this
He comes across as very jaded in this interview for someone so young but then again he had already been in show business for over 10 years. Rest in peace River!
I miss River.
Such an amazing personality. “and then we talked to the actor uHhhh rubber penis”
I really believe that there are just some people who care just too much. He seems like one of them.
I said the same thing here ruclips.net/video/7xTstIs7qDo/видео.html
He is a genius.
well said and that is what makes me love him even more
As much as l love him he was a bit hypocrite about a lot of things too... i mean he was talking about healthy lifestyle and being an outsider of the MTV circle but he was a part of another very hardcore scene in Hollywood, one that was very 'hip' too, that would hang at the 'Viper' and go on drug binges and portray these 'rockstar lifesytle' for young people who obviosly knew they were addicts. I dont blaming him, it was definitely a very hard time for young stars like him in Hollywood he was very alone from a young age in the industry and got lost as any of us would. it was a much hypocritical industry back then than it is now.
He just said “rubber penis” 😂 I love him
why do I feel like this video is fucking longer then it already it is😭😭
+Mildred Escoto because you resonate with it. genuine interest.
The video initially looked to me like it would be much longer than it turned out to be (too brief!). Lol.
compare this to the modern day intelligence of a person of the same age- absolutely phemonenal. RIP River a tragic loss
So very true. He was an old wise soul. Very articulate and intelligent.
may this angel rest in peace
He's definitely coked out. The way he's rambling and touching his face gives it away.
How can someone this young be so intellectual. I know someone like this. But These rare souls are not of this world
Bram van Splunteren (the interviewer) is a pop icon himself.
Why did nobody help him
no one believed him
I heard that some people tried to help but he didn't want any
It's not easy to help a person who refuses to believe they have a problem.
At least Keanu will have had a lifetime to create, and, you know, be alive. River was cheated, and art was cheated of his influence.
@@sashabrown1796 True and his movie's will live on.
He goes down to his only friend, he goes down to his bitter end. For Rio. 😢 This breaking my Heart.
He’s a mess here! They’re not even his clothes! Frusciante was a disaster for River!
Can anyone tell me what is the title of song at the beginning and later in 2:35 ?
wow, river was off his head here.
Iara Foschino me too, lost a wonderful soul in 2001, he was 21 and I think of him everyday and maybe that's why I miss River so much too, he reminds me of him
Brilliant human... Miss you brother! The world will always still have you in it.
Such a shame he got to this point.
Listen again, cause River always believed that and he is 100% right
I love his voice. So unique and distinct, its unlike anything I've heard. 😂❤
way ahead of his time, and some wisdom for a young guy
damn.. river was like, about as old as my brother? that makes me really sad
So hard to see River like this. Even with the burn mark on his finger, nodding off Mark?
Shame he met these people. As BoB Forrest says in Running With Monsters, River just wasn’t on the same low life aura as the likes of John Frusciante
"...they are there to hurt me" Wow! My husband knows this better than almost anyone, he was chewed up and spit out by Hollywood
this breaks my heart
@klawson211 Yes... agreed.. however, he never wore sunglasses up till this interview... he never wore them in interviews up until the Idaho interviews... when he allegedlly began his opiate use... at this point he wore them very often in interviews even press conferences..
he was battling serious demons and he hated hollywood and fame he thought it was so phony... he was outspoken too very honest... shame we lost him at such a young age and peak of his career
Omg he is high as hell 😳 #watchinging from Finland 2019
me too..so humble and natural..love him !
I love this guy. But I still find it hilarious that he's wearing sunglasses indoors.
It’s because he’s high on drugs and he doesn’t want people to notice especially his fans as he believed it would be quite the bad influence but you may already know that and if so, apologies.
4:00 River play !
Original 'word game' with the initial letters.
R = River / Rabber
P = Phoenix / Penis
I'm so sad to see this,
Not only the sunglasses but his hand up over his face the whole interview, he feels like he has alot to hide here or he wouldn't be hiding his face
Raine i'm exactly the same i can be my self under the drugs only and thats my problem
Moozy Mathers yeah. there's something wrong with being high if you're using heroine. The reason he died was because of it so yeah there is a problem.
Moozy Mathers When your coping mechanism kills you, it's a fucking problem.
@@beccab4160 the reason he died was because John Frushiante gave River a drugged drink and never dialed 911
I wish we could have met. I might have been able to save him. I loved him. I really did.
Mist Réme dude dont say stuff like that it borders on disrespect... u cant “save ppl” from drug addiction i know u dont say this w malice but that kinda wishful thinking is why we lose people to it. they have to be able to want to be better, to be better. u cant “save him” they have to save themselves the only thing we can do is support them
@Mist Réme Shut up wimp. Like who are you?

When you think abut it, isn't it mad that the 'fluffy kitten is confused' video at the top of the list to my right of the video has over 22 million views.
