Wow. This video is from 1990 in Portland Oregon, they were there for the filming of My Own Private Idaho directed by Gus Van Sant. Flea, River, Keanu Reeves and the rest of the cast and crew were all staying at Gus Van Sant's house. There were so many people there, Gus decided to leave and stay at an apartment in downtown Portland - probably to get away from the crowd and noise. According to cast and crew many people would play their instruments and jam. River would sometimes play his guitar for three hours. He learned to play his guitar when he was six years old. Thank you so much for posting this.
River was an extremely experimental individual, he appeared on smile from the streets you hold.. doesnt get much more out there than that. I'm sure he's playing exactly what he wished he was an accomplished musician
The way River played the guitar is plain and simple: the way he played it. Whether it’s good or bad is up for interpretation. There is no such thing as a good or bad player, there are just people who like to colour between the lines and people who want to see where the colouring pencils take them and River was probably one of those people. This is personally not really my style but saying that he’s a bad guitarist or musician is just rude and disrespectful because judging off of Aleka’s Attic music I think we can all say he was talented. Really talented.
I mean, I think you can argue that an innability to play would be bad. However he clearly knows how to play the guitar. Whether or not people like it is another story. 6:45 sounds like he could play a traditional rock riff if he chose to. He's just fucking around.
What is needed against Flea's bass fartings are more melodic and sustained guitar lines. He's should play off off Flea rather that try to "Flea out" himself.
@@sashabrown1796yeah too bad people expect Jimmy Page whenever a person is on video playing guitar, and if they’re not mind blowing people say they suck. River definitely had the musical talent running through his bones. If he's entirely self-taught like I've seen claimed he would have been quite the guitarist eventually. Thanks for the rare piece of history
Barley Mob - he started early... his family was involved with this strange Children of God cult and he and his sister Rainbow 🌈 had to go out and busk for money and River would play guitar and sing and his sister would collect the money... River was supporting his family from well before his balls dropped and was supporting like 30 people or more on his acting career but his first love was music... but it's hard to be an actor and musician simultaneously- Hugh Laurie being an exception... But River definitely had talent and desire... obviously Flea kind of dominates... which is debatable if you should do that as that more experienced player... No slight on Flea intended... Still, I don't like it when people screw with musicians... if they let him play for 5 minutes maybe he would still be with us...
Yeah, like mentioned below, River was pimped out in the streets playing music to support the cult he was in at the time. We're talking August Rush and Slumdog Millionaire style. He's used to improvising in the streets of 3rd world countries for coins to being home to a cult known for molesting children, not your normal upbringing. His musical talent is self taught as a child in South America and experimental as hell. Funny thing is his music was far out then, now would fit right in with many bands out there this day in age.
The 90s are you rock crowd hung around and jammed w River but never accepted him as on of them. That night at the Viper Room they wouldn’t let him play, which is possibly the reason John gave him that drug concoction because River was pissed and he felt bad
I once read Michelangelo hated painting and only did it to buy marble for his true love... sculptures. I guess depending on how you feel about what you are doing at a particular time can make anything feel like a side gig. For 2 cats jammin on a buzz, this is great. Flea is Godzilla on that bass after many years on stage. River is developing and his use of chord chemistry shows he was well on his way until drugs stopped him.
If you listen after it sounds like "I was doing that blow" or "I was doing that for awhile". There is obviously something in the bathroom that people keep going in for.
Man, everyone judging the playing here pretty harshly considering they're just sitting around noodling, and are likely fuct up. I know me and one of my old jam buddies used to sit around and noodle after a ball, and thank god nobody recorded it, lol, but we were both good players... they're just goofing off a bit. It's not a real reflection of ability.
Love this, he was jamming out. As in playing whatever he felt like. Not necessarily matching the other person, or trying to lead.. just messing around :)
What can ya say... Flea is amazing... and River was exceptionally good looking; he was every bit the guitar player as Johnny Depp and Steven Seagal are today... 25 yrs later.
I think the people defending river's playing A. dont play instruments themselves. and B. have no idea that music theory is a thing and that being in the same key is part of jamming with someone lol and not just randomly plucking at any note sporadically. I give it up to flea in this video for having so much patience.
Flea, John and River all jammed quite often together. There must be something they got out of the experience. Maybe they were connecting on a level beyond music theory. Despite your opinion of this video, River actually was decent guitar player.
@@loganhartrick8127 I agree with your comment jamming does connect people, thats 100% percent accurate its genuinely fun to jam with friends and theres a bond that occurs. im just focusing on this particular video not their whole history as friends. you cant deny the fact that as cool and talented as Rivers was, he is just playing complete nonsense in this video nothing about his playing here resembles any sort of musical pattern or melody its just randomness. its like asking someone to write a poem or just a sentence and they write "hgdfaghkghasdfhgagh"

Did anyone else feel like they were doing drugs in the background. Towards the end River was like I'm sticking to cigs for a while. Then flee looked up over in a direction away from River where there was a girl, sees something (drugs) and stops playing and says hes done. I love all the smart ass musos here commenting on Phoenix's (lack of) guitar skills. Some bitty leaked home movie of a self-taught young guy fucking around with friends at whatever-AM hardly warrants a critique of his ability. Lets sit you lot opposite Flea and see how you fair. Not a thought for nerves or being tired after work, substances or plain not giving a fuck. Plenty of evidence about that Phoenix was in fact a terribly decent musician i.e. the list of rated musicians who kept him in their company and examples of his own projects- which are beyond decent for an 18-21 year old. He was a creative soul. He's a one of the rare few deceased performers where I miss what they may have done.
Exactly, It's just two friends jamming in a living room together for fun. They're not charging money for a concert, who cares if the guitar playing is accurate or not. I’ll take River Phoenix sounding unique and true to his own over a million John Mayer blues copycats any day of the week. I find his music very true to his personality. Occasionally he sounded mainstream but would launch off that springboard into musically-derived torrents of chaos that made you pay attention.
Too bad people expect Jimmy Page or some world-class player whenever a person is on video playing guitar, and if they’re not mind-blowing people say they suck. River didn’t suck but wasn’t great. But he was a professional actor, not a professional guitar player, who was just having fun with friends. People just take things too seriously on RUclips instead of just enjoying the video. It seems like they didn’t communicate what key they were in. And from what I’m seeing it looks like River doesn’t know theory enough to figure it out on the spot. Flea seems to have a more stable tonic going on. My guess is that River was self taught and is used to writing from a more slow and methodical approach. Just because you aren’t great at improvising doesn’t mean you can’t be a great player. His songs show that he was fully capable of playing cohesive pieces of music.

I wonder if River would still like rhcp considering what happened to him... I do but I often feel contradiction about it... I mean I know Flea and River were friends but a lot of ppl say it was john frusciante who gave him the drink that ended up killing him
He did kill him. It all could’ve been prevented. John frusante gave River a concoction of a mix of drugs into a liquid and was told to drink it. When he did minutes later he started violently vomiting and started having seizures on the ground . And died before even getting to the hospital What John did was probably not on purpose BUT it was very irresponsible and could’ve been prevented . John ended up running home scared and hid in his house threatening to kill himself because of the incident and told Johnny depp he was afraid of rivers parents pressing charges and even going to prison for murder . Rivers parents ended up not pressing charges . But Rivers father told the press that if he ever saw John frucante he’d kill him . And I don’t blame him for saying that . If John didn’t do what he did , River would still be alive today .
I like the experimentation, but it seems like River was doing stuff, because he didn't know technique. I have Jammed with people like that, where it sometimes sounds alright, but they are just doing nonsense movements.
You mean like at 6:56 where he hears the riff Flea plays like twice and then plays it back perfectly? It honestly feels like his problem in this 9 minute clip, is playing 'with' Flea vs just randomly wandering off and not paying attention to the vibe.
Excuse me? You’re literally so disrespectful. River was the most amazing, talented loving person you’ll ever get in this entire universe. River was an angel and he is a legend to this day. He was most different to the other celebrities out there in the 80s. River was truly the best.

You mean like at 6:56 where he hears the riff Flea plays like twice and then plays it back perfectly? It honestly feels like his problem in this 9 minute clip, is playing 'with' Flea vs just randomly wandering off and not paying attention to the vibe.
Actually river has pretty sweet rythme flea was a grooveless nutjob
Amen.
I'm sorry I lov you riv but I'm cracking up
Why did Keanu end up in MOPI with Flea and Point Break with Anthony? Are there more times he's intersected with RHCP?
Lucy Foster River is in the video, “Breaking the Girl”...
I understand the missing him, but honestly people talk about him like he was some sort of God and its tiring
SkullDogTim he is though
Excuse me? You’re literally so disrespectful. River was the most amazing, talented loving person you’ll ever get in this entire universe. River was an angel and he is a legend to this day. He was most different to the other celebrities out there in the 80s. River was truly the best.
*cough* fangirls *cough*
@@-unhoelyn2727 this is what he's talking about. It worse that River was ever born than him dying, because he wasn't meant for this world. Stop the veneration of humans.
Jason Higdon that’s kinda what Fruscinate said too
What the hell was 4:53!!!! 😁
You made it all the way to 4:53? WOW, you must either be deaf or have extreme amounts of patience.
