Gen Z, here in 2023, adore River. My heart breaks that he's not still around, but I also believe that the state of the world would be a very sad place for him.
I just found out about this man and it’s absolutely heartbreaking finding out about his death. He seems like such a sweet soul who had so much more to do. Rest in peace ❤️

When he was younger he was talking about how dangerous those places and groups were and how he avoided them, didn't need to have anything to do with them, and enjoyed the simple life in nature, with his family and friends..but the love of music brought him to that crowd..he was too pure for that ugly world...😢💔

He was the real deal. I met him in 1992. He was with Keanu Reeves at the time, Keanu was kinda rude to us and River noticed it and took it upon himself to come and talk with us and make us feel comfortable. He was down to earth and extremely friendly. I was jealous of him because of his very good looks. The world lost a good person when he died.
He was such a little cutie. He was very sweet, sincere and was clearly very cheeky. He was just a young boy, trying to follow his dreams, support his family and look after the planet x
River is so unique and gentle. U can tell he’s wise beyond his years, so gracious and well spoken. He’s a young soul and old soul at the same time, never taking himself too seriously yet being so courteous. I could go on and on. I just have a deep appreciation for him as a person. When I was younger in the mid 90s I went out with a girl because I reminded her of River Phoenix. I didn't even know about the guy until she said watch My Own Private Idaho and then I realised what a cool guy he was. Watched his interviews afterwards and he just come across as such a nice natured guy who was also very anti drugs. So it made it all that more tragic because he died of a drugs overdose at such a young age. Such a shame he had so many more years left to make his mark and shine brightly.

I ended up watching quite a few of his movies after like The Mosquito Coast with Harrison Ford. I realised then he had such depth as an actor from playing light hearted roles to playing really emotionally charged roles he was a truly gifted person.

I even used to wear this red jacket that my girlfriend got me at the time that was practically identical to the one he wore In My Own Private Idaho. The only comparison today is Keanu who is a genuine human being with a great number of examples of his generous nature. I think it was partly River’s influence. We lost a pure spirit when River passed away. RIP River, you’re still sorely missed.

A one in a million humble, gorgeous, sweet & extremely talented actor and musician. I always found it very interesting that he was the only child in his family who didn't look like the others who all looked like his dad. I will never forget the day he died. I had seen a picture of him in a coffin in a tabloid magazine with dark hair which he had dyed for his last movie (Dark Blood) and it was so eerie.
River took after his mum. If you google a picture of her, you see it straight away - same nose, same face shape, same eyes, same colouring. Both beautiful.
I like listening to his interviews because the real River comes out because he is not guided by any director or acting, he is simply himself in his attitudes and his words.

Smoked a joint with him. Jam with him. He exhibited qualities that I wish so many other people had - vulnerability, compassion, soft-spoken yet confident, empathy...He is still very much missed. 2 reasons I always remember his birthday: 1) Same month and day as my own; August 23rd (different years - he would be a few older than me) 2) River was my very first crush and I was convinced sharing the same birthdate meant we we were soulmates!
He was my mom's favourite when she was younger so I'd been introduced to him when I was a kid. She wouldn't tell me when or how he died though and through an article or something I found out he died on my birthday and I was inconsolable. I'm grateful for what he's left us with, though💜
He has simply gone on tour abroad with his beloved band Aleka's Attic. He sings, plays his guitar, writes songs and enjoys the environment he defended so much. ❤❤

When I was about the same age as the main characters, I saw "Stand By Me" for the first time. I thought all of those boys were great characters but River had something special about him. Also, he was hounded so much by the press in the wake of River's death that the family had to move out of the country for about a year, until things quieted down. Joaquin was only 19 at the time. Thus, all of that probably made him wary of reporters and come off standoffish in interviews once he resumed his acting career as a young man. (He had been a child actor but quit when he was 15; he returned to acting at age 21).

And then doing the movie my own private Idaho- it was very dark and led him down The wrong path, and they say that’s when he started experimenting with heroin heavily. 😢

So sad. So much talent and gone to soon. He carried the weight of So many things that his parents exposed him to as a kid.
I mean he did the drugs that killed him that night so it wasn’t really his parents.

@@Officiallyrosko To be fair, Joaquin was present when River died and actually made the 9-1-1 call that was leaked to the media and replayed ad nauseam. Also, he was hounded so much by the press in the wake of River's death that the family had to move out of the country for about a year, until things quieted down. Joaquin was only 19 at the time. Thus, all of that probably made him wary of reporters and come off standoffish in interviews once he resumed his acting career as a young man. (He had been a child actor but quit when he was 15; he returned to acting at age 21).

I think the big mistake was obviously first and foremost- Not working through, and getting help for for the severe pain he endured and carried throughout his childhood and young adult life. And then doing the movie my own private Idaho- it was very dark and led him down The wrong path, and they say that’s when he started experimenting with heroin heavily. 😢
